ONE OF THE GUYS (HarperCollins 1999) is a highly controversial book that right-wingers have used in their attacks on the National Endowment for the Arts, which partially funded the writing of the book. The satirical story of a man impersonating a US Navy chaplain on a ship as it goes from port to port in the Far East, the book has been compared to A CONFEDERACY OF DUNCES and CATCH-22. I am the author, and I don't see why it is acceptable for the taxpayers to fund the military hijinks I describe in the book, but not acceptable for me to accept a small grant to write about these issues.
