VA Governor promotes HEALTHY LIFESTYLE and Bicycling in Roanoke Virginia

Over 100 bicyclists ranging in age from 3 to 73, joined the governor on
Thursday, July 2, to cycle the Roanoke River Greenway. Blue Ridge Bicycle
Club members promoted Rail with Trail, a planning strategy to use Federal
stimulus monies to connect communities. Connecting the Roanoke River
Greenway to the Huckleberry Trail will link the Roanoke Valley to
Blacksburg, Radford, and Pulaski which is currently the northern terminus
for the New River Trail. BRBC also provided safe cycling Greenway etiquette
instruction and distributed bicycle helmets to persons needing a helmet to
ride.

Roanoke Parks and Recreation director, Steve Buschor, presented the Governor
with a Roanoke Valley Mill Mountain Bike Patrol jersey. Roanoke City
Police, Carilion Police and the Roanoke Valley Mill Mountain bike patrol
provided assistance controlling traffic through the on road section of the
Greenway near Roanoke Memorial Hospital. A party atmosphere was created
when the Western Virginia Water Authority distributed cold bottled water at
the 5 mile turnaround near the Waste Water Treatment Plant. Governor Kaine
made time to speak to everyone who rode.

Senator Warner's office was represented by Drew Densmore. Mayor Bowers
introduced the Governor. City Council member Dave Trinkle stopped by and
greeted riders. East Coasters Fitness and Cycling provided bicycles for the
governor and his staff. Cyclists represented the Roanoke Valley Greenway
Commission, Western Virginia Land Trust, Sierra Club, BRBC, Mill Mountain
Momma riders, Virginia Bicycling Federation, BikeWalk, S.E. Action Forum
neighborhood, Tuesday Night Lowlanders, Girl Scout Adventurers, YMCA
cyclists and regular Greenway users. It was a great day to promote cycling
in Roanoke..and the Governor did a great job of accomplishing that!

Pictures will be on the Governor's site on Monday, July 6.
