The main problem with anything with Harvey has to do with Classic Media. They
feel that they should always get top dollar for everything they do or not do it
at all, which basically defeats any projects of merit in getting off the ground,
and their licensing fees are considerably high.
Sales expectations are always way too high for Harvey product and as a result,
even if something sells modestly, they are too scared or greedy to attempt
anything else, because previous items haven't sold to expectations.
For example, the recent Dark Horse books sold decently. In fact the Casper and
the Richie Rich book sold out and the Casper book is now in a second printing.
However, in comparison to other things that Dark Horse is selling like the
Creepy and Eerie books, and even the Little Lulu series, the Harvey books have
been resounding failures. Also, the print runs were about 5000 books on average,
not very much for a supposed "major" book release.
Problem is, if it doesn't sell, it keeps companies like Classic Media from
trying something else. Their attitude is "Why throw good money after bad".
I do own the "Absolutely Mad" DVD-Rom that GIT Corporation (the same company
that is issuing the "Jughead" and other Archie titles), and I asked them a
couple of years ago if a Harvey collection(s) would be possible. They said yes,
provided that Classic Media gives them the licensing rights to do it. So far,
the answer has been no.
The real solution would be to somehow wrestle away the rights to the Harvey
characters, and then anything could be issued. Anybody got $60+ million???
