I have found out that Robert William Quick died in SC and his death certificate
lists the following info:

Name: William Robert Quick, Jr.
Birth: 13 Oct 1861, NC
Death: 18 Jun 1934, York Co, SC
Burial: Laurelwood Cemetery, Rock Hill, SC
Father: William R. Quick
Mother: Mary Smith

After the death of his first wife Robert married Annie Brigman and they had a
daughter named Ila Mae Quick. Robert's father, William R. Quick, Sr was the son
of David Quick. William fought in the civil war. Robert's mother, Mary Smith
was the daughter of James Smith and Lydia Wright. Mary was born 4 Jul 1840 in
NC and died 9 Jan 1916 in Scotland Co, NC. She is buried in the "Clem Smith"
Cemetery in Richmond Co near Ghio just off of Scotland County line road. Her
mother, Lydia (Liddie) and brother Clem are also buried there.

If any of these names sound familiar please let me know? I'd like to compare
notes, etc.

Susan,

I wonder if Alex III is the same Alex that worked for my father for many years.
He was b. 6/6/1902 and d. 12/26/1975 and his death certificate shows his name as
Alex HALL, Jr. with parents of Alex HALL and Mary [no last name given]. He
raised his family not too far from the Laurinburg-Maxton Airbase. If you will

I am doing research on several families who had "roots" in Richland and then
Scotland counties, North Carolina. I have found them on census records for 1900
through 1930, but not much prior to that, and I am trying to find their origins.
I am also interested in establishing contact with any living relatives still in
the area who might be able to shed some light on the families' histories. I am
sharing the following information in hopes of finding someone who might also be
searching for these families, and to contribute to your shared information.

The first family I am concerned with is the ALEXANDER HALL family. Alexander
Hall (II)(1870-1952) was the son of a white overseer named Alexander Hall
(I)(Est. 1833 - aft. 1900)and a former slave woman whose name in later life was
Sylvia Williams (abt 1852 - c. 1930), herself the issue of a white man and a
young slave girl. Alexander (II) was married several times, the first to MARY
WILKERSON (abt 1875 - bef 1904). Alexander and Mary had three children that we
know about: Ethel (Effie) J.(1891-1976); William H.(1898 - ?); and Alexander
(III) (1902 - ?). This family can be found on the 1900 census for Spring Hill
Township, Scotland, NC. They are listed again on the 1910 census for Spring
Hill, Scotland, NC, but this time, Alexander is listed with his second wife,
Callie (maiden name unknown) (1883-1920), his children by Mary, and his children
by Callie: Sallie (1906 - ?); and James (1908 - ?). They had another daughter
later on named Lucille (1913 - 1996). His mother, SYLVIA WILLIAMS, is listed
with his household in 1910. She is also listed as a household servant for the
Daniel Shaw family on the 1900 census.

We would like to discover more information on Sylvia. Was Williams her maiden
name, or did she marry after giving birth to Alexander (II)? Her mother was a
slave, half white and half black. We would love to know more about her history,
but realize that it may not be possible to find much more information on her.

We would also like to see if there is more information on Alexander Hall (I) --
reputed to be an overseer and father of Sylvia's son, Alexander Hall (II). Where
did he work? Family lore has it that Sylvia walked a long way from where she
came from to Scotland county, as a teenager and pregnant with Alexander. If this
story is true, then Alexander Hall (I) may have come from outside of Richland
county, and the "trek" would have taken place some time before May 1870, when
Alexander (II) was born.

Alexander (II) is said to have married several other times, but we have no
information on this at this time. At some point, Alexander (II) moved to New
York, probably to join some of his children who moved there as well. He died in
New York in 1972, a beloved father and grandfather.

The oldest daughter of Alexander (II) Hall and Mary Wilkerson was Ethel Jane
Hall. She married HENRY CLEVELAND McKAY (later McKOY) (1889 - 1971). The
McKay/McKoy family is the second family I am researching. This family is listed
on the 1920 census for Spring Hill, Scotland, NC. Henry and Ethel are listed
with their children: Mary Elizabeth (1915 - ) and Roberta (1917 - ). Alexander's
mother, Sylvia Williams, is also listed with this household. She is Ethel's
grandmother, but is listed as Henry's aunt for some reason. Since we haven't
found her on the 1930 census, we assume that Sylvia died in Scotland county
before 1930. We also haven't located Alexander (II) Hall on the 1930 census, but
we know he was still living.

Henry McKay/McKoy and Ethel are found again on the 1930 census for Spring Hill,
Scotland, NC, listed with their children. In addition to Mary and Roberta, there
were Sarah (1921 - ); Vernese (listed as Bernice) (1923 - ); and Louise (1925 -
). Henry's nephew, Jesse McKay, is also listed with the household. We don't know
who his parents were, but assume he is the son of one of Henry's brothers since
he has the same last name. Later on in 1930, Henry and Ethel would have a son,
Willie Neal McKoy (1930 - 2002).

At some point, possibly in the 1940s, Henry and Ethel moved their family to
Brooklyn, New York. But most of their relatives remained in the
Richland/Scotland area of NC.

We are interested in finding more information on Henry's family, like the name
of his father. His mother's first name was Sarah (1847 - ?), but we don't have
her maiden name. We believe his siblings were Martha (1877 - ?); Lobin (1885 -
?); TWINS Dee (1890 - ?)and Thomas (1890 - ?); James (1894 - ?); and Harvey
(1896 - ?). Sarah was listed as a widow on the 1900 census, so Henry's father
died between 1896 and 1900), and we estimate his birth to be around 1845. Sarah
and her family are also on the 1910 census.

I thank you for the opportunity to share this information and to see if there
may be others out there interested in these families and in sharing information.

Best wishes,
Susan

I am a new member researching 1700-1800s Richmond and Robeson Counties.
Primary surnames are: MCLEOD, TERRY, GIBSON, MCDONALD, BOUNDS, RAIFORD,
DAWKINS, MCCORMICK. Associated surnames are: BUIE, BRITT, COVINGTON,
MCNEILL, ELLERBE, BAXLEY, JERNIGAN, Other surnames: BENNETT, MANNING,
JENKINS, JONES, MCKAY, CAPEL. The complete list is at
http://trees.ancestry.com/pt/ListView.aspx?tid=8101452
<http://trees.ancestry.com/pt/ListView.aspx?tid=8101452>

My primary person is Alexander Calhoun "Toon" MCLEOD (1858-1944), his
wives Ida Cornelia BENNETT (1864-1896), Della Lorena MANNING
(1876-1906), Mary Katherine "Kate" TERRY (1874-1947) and their 11
children. The MCLEODs, BENNETTs and TERRYs resided in Richmond County
(Fairgrounds/Mineral Springs/Ellerbe, Black Jack, Beaverdam, Pee Dee
Village, Rockingham) throughout the 1800s. The MANNINGs came from
Marlboro County, SC. The A.C. McLeod family moved to Burnt Swamp
(Buie), Robeson County, in 1902.

The A.C. McLeod family tree starts at:
http://trees.ancestry.com/pt/pedigree.aspx?tid=8101452&pg=0
<http://trees.ancestry.com/pt/pedigree.aspx?tid=8101452&pg=0>

Cemeteries that have my people are Bear Branch Cemetery, Old McDonald
Cemetery and Green Lake Methodist Church Cemetery.

I need help finding information on A.C.'s Scottish ancesters. His
parents were Norman Calhoun McLeod (1810-1892) and Elizabeth Abigail
"Abby" Terry McLeod (1828-1907) who are buried at Green Lake. I can
find nothing other than late 1800s census records on Norman that say his
parents were born in NC. Oral family history says Norman's parents'
names are Archie McLeod and Catherine (Katie) McCormick/McCormac. The
assumption is that Archie/Katie's parents emigrated from Scotland in the
mid-1700s. Common boy's names in the tree are: John, James, Norman,
Alexander and Archie. Girl's are: Catherine, Mary, Jane, Sarah and
Annie.

I am a granddaughter of A.C. and Kate McLeod. Their youngest and only
living child (of the 11 original children) is my mother, who married an
Army soldier from Ft. Bragg during WWII. That explains how we ended up
in NJ when my father retired. But, my heart and roots are firmly in NC.

Thank you for any assistance,

Jo Terry Maliawski-Boras, Southampton NJ

No, I have never heard of a King Strickland/lin. My Stricklands were in early
Richmond/Anson NC 1770/80 and then into Marlboro County, SC 1800/1810. By 1850
they had moved to Florida except my g-g-grandfather who remained in Marlboro. I
have seen the Seals name in Marlboro but don't know of any connection with my
Stricklands.

Do you have a King Strickland/Stricklin in your line? He was born abt
1874 and he married Annie E Jernigan b. ant 1876. They had two children
that I know of; Bessie b. March 2, 1903 and James b. abt 1907.

Bessie and her husband Walter Charles Seals were my husband's great
grandparents. Any info is appreciated. Thanks.

I am also researching McKinnons in Richmond Co. I'm looking for the
family of John C. McKinnon b. Oct 25, 1862 in Richmond county m.
Frances Henry b. abt 1862. Her father was Henry H. Henry b. 1837/1838
and mother was Eliza Ann McKinnon b. abt 1830.

I'd like to find info on both McKinnons as well as the Henry family.
Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

I'm pleased to join this Yahoo group. My family interests include the
descendants of Samuel Snead and Temperance Buford and of Lawrence Horn
and Ann Crosland Snead.

I do have an initial question that people knowledgeable about Richmond
county history might be able to answer. My g2grandfather, Lawrence
Horn, is said to have built the first cotton gin in Rockingham,
Richmond County in the late 1700s. It was struck by lightning and
burned down. A Mr. Martin Crawford also built one near Rockingham, NC.

Does this ring any bells among members with an interest in history of
technology?

Hi All -

My name is Kate and I'm new to the list and to researching in Richmond
County. Most of my NC research has been up in Rowan.

I was wondering if anyone might know of a home for unwed mothers or an
orphanage that would have been operating in or around Rockingham in
the 1920s.

The child I'm looking for was born in Rockingham in 1923 and adopted
by a family in Mt Gilead sometime before 1930.

Thanks for any help or advice you might have to give me.

Hi everyone,
I just finished putting together a page of Scottish history and genealogy
links. I've found several recently which are new to me, but I've, also,
included all of the links I've been collecting for years:
http://thepastwhispers.com/Scottish_Links.html
Also, I've just discovered a great section on the Library of Congress
site: Global Gateway: World Culture & Resources:
http://international.loc.gov/intldl/intldlhome.html There are resources for
every country imaginable and the links go on and on.
By the way, I noticed that the LOC site has a handy new BETA search
which allows you to search several of their pages at once:

Does anyone know the name of Thomas Williamson's wife? He is the son
of Isaac and Sarah Woodle Williamson, born ca 1810? I have the info
below about Thomas. Did he have a daughter named "Ann?"

Any info will be helpful. Freda Roberson Noble

"Thomas purchased a word dictionary (2 vol.s), Asbury Journals, 3
vols., a man’s saddle, a silver watch gig and appurtenances from his
father’s estate. He received 250.00 from the will.
Thomas may have had a daughter named Ann Williamson. A marriage notice
published April 13, 1837 in Fayetteville Observer reads: Married in
Richmond County on the 3rd, Mr. Albran W. Moody, of Rockingham, to Miss
Ann Williamson, daughter of Thomas Williamson.

Notes for JOHN WILLIAMSON:
"I also give to my Nephew John Williamson one rifel (sic) gun. I also
give
to my Nephew Thomas Williamson one man's saddle....." Source: Last
will &
Testament of Shadrick/Shadrack. Williamson of Richmond County, NC ,

Yes, There is a note at the bottom of the page link on last email. If you
know of anyone please ask them to respond to Denise. She has asked me, but I
already host four county sites, and my own personal site. No time left for
me either. Any additional Williamson data? Myrtle

Thank you, Myrtle. How I would love to be able to coordinate the web
site, but I just don't have the time. Has anyone posted a request
for a coordinator? There may be someone out there just looking for
something to do.

Best to you...Freda
