New Library Hours

The library will be closed July 3, 4, and 5 in observance of Independence Day.
The library now opens at 2 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. It will be closed on
Fridays during July and August, the practice for the last 15 or more years.
Beginning Sept. 1, the library will be open 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Fridays. The 2
p.m. Tuesday and Thursday openings will continue. We regret that town funding
dictates this reduction in hours.

Storytimes

Want to have some great reads this summer? Come in and enjoy some great stories
with your friends on Wednesdays at 11 a.m. in the Children's Room. This is
appropriate for children ages four and up. No registration is needed.

Frogs are Out of This World

Come and see red eye tree frogs, poison dart frogs, and giant tropical toads.
Rick Roth and the Creature Teachers even have a frog named Jabba the Hut. You
can imagine what he looks like! Creature Teachers fascinate audiences with the
wonders and diversity of the animals that share our planet with a fun and casual
approach. Come and join us for a fun afternoon on Tues., July 7 at 3:30 in the
Multipurpose Room. Register required on the library's Events Calendar at
www.littletonlibrary.org

Teens Do Duct Tape

Summer Reading Book Group

If you are entering fifth or sixth grade, read "Witch Child" by Celia Rees and
come to talk about it with other kids who have read the book on Wed. July 22 at
6:30 p.m. in the library's Couper Room. Mrs. Sill will help out with the
discussion. "Witch Child" is one of the books on the Middle School reading list
for kids going into sixth grade. Ask a librarian to help you request a copy of
the book if there are none on the shelf.

YarnOver Knitting Group

These crafters will be meeting right through the summer on the first Wednesday,
(August 5) and third Tuesday, (July 21 and August 18) of each month at 7 p.m. in
the Couper Room. Bring your project and enjoy conversation and companionship
with other knitters in air conditioned comfort.

"Starship Adventure" Summer Reading Programs
Sign up online now for summer reading at www.littletonlibrary.orgor

Children's Programs

There are two programs for children, one for those up to 3rd grade and another
for fourth through sixth graders. Children keep track to the time they read or
are read to from June 29 through August 22. Incentives are awarded at various
levels and participants are eligible for the grand prizes drawn at the end of
the summer.

Trekking Teens

The two programs for teens consist of one for those who plan to read about 75
pages a week and another for those who will tackle 300 pages a week. When teens
meet their goals, they will choose from the teen-selected prizes. Audio books,
Manga, magazines, and even books on the school summer reading lists count.
Readers will mark the locales of their books on a map in the Teen Space.

Adults, too

Adults will read three books during the summer in order to be eligible for the
prize drawing. One book must have something to do with "space", a subject that
will be broadly defined. Some suggested books are on display on the Main Desk.
Prizes include a $100 gift certificate to an area restaurant, tickets to the
John F. Kenney Library and Museum, autographed copies of Mortenson and Relin's
book, "Three Cups of Tea", and tickets to the "Big E" exposition in Springfield.

All participants except the youngest will keep track of their reading on the
Reads in MA website.

Boston Bruins

When you read, you score! The hockey team is partnering with the state summer
reading program to offer some fantastic prize opportunities for program
participants. The Grand Prize [one state-wide] is a VIP packet with 4 loge
tickets, parking pass for one car, bench assistant role for 1 child [ages 6-12],
"Family High Five", Zamboni ride for [must be 12 or older] and post game meet
and greet. Other prizes include autographed Patrice Bergeron jersey and Tim
Thomas puck and player autographed mini sticks. Sign up for the library's
summer reading program to be eligible.

Laid Back Reading Group

"Fast Food Nation" by Eric Schlosser is the July selection. Journalist Schlosser
argues that the fast food industry has triggered the growth of malls in
America's landscape, widened the gap between rich and poor, fueled an epidemic
of obesity, and propelled American cultural imperialism abroad. He discusses
facts about food production and preparation, the ingredients and taste-enhancers
in the food, the chains' efforts to reel in young, susceptible consumers, and
other unsettling facts. Read this non-fiction title to see if you agree with
him. This title is available in large print and audio CD. Ask a library staff
member to request the format you prefer or reserve it through the library's
catalog. Print copies of the book are on display in the front lobby.

BookPage

The July issue of BookPage is here. In celebration of the 40th anniversary of
the moon landing, the best books covering the event are reviewed. You'll also
find many mysteries discussed, including one by "Slumdog Millionaire" author
Vikas Swarup. Interviews with Buzz Aldrin, Laura Caldwell and Jennifer Weiner
are featured. Summer reading for children and adults is included. The usual
departments, audio, book clubs, romance, cooking, and bestseller watch will
provide you with lots of reading suggestions. Pick up your copy today. The
Friends of the Reuben Hoar Library purchase BookPage so that you can have a free
copy. You can also read the reviews at www.bookpage.com
