Anyone in Cleveland remember Marc's drug stores that also launched in the mid 1980's a short lived ShowBiz/Chuck E. Cheese's knockoff called Marc's Fun Time Pizza Place in former Cleveland area Chuck E. Cheese's Pizza Time Theatre locations?
Believe it, weathervane and all, only difference is the front has
been painted white. No longer an A&P, split between Sherwin
Williams and a local Pharmacy. In Waynesboro, PA in the Waynesboro
Mall. I suggest a visit to this little PA town on Rt. 16, a very
interesting old (however recently remodeled) Martin's (oldest one
remaining), a weird Ames, and an interesting Kmart, it's the
smallest one I've ever seen, and it has green flooring throughout.
The town dates back it seems to the 1970's in retail, maybe even
older, only exceptions being the new Food Lion and the Big K logo.
The CVS drug store off the main road is quite interesting, it
appears to me to have an old grocery store look to it...
Was there ever a Woolworth's store in the World Trade Center area of New York City that remained empty after the chain went out of business in 1997 and remained empty until September 11, 2001 when the tragedy occured on the World Trade Center in a surprise hijacked plane crash?
I just noticed this is the first Daily Digest for the REMEMBERING RETAIL Yahoo! Group, and it started with #0, hope the next one could be Digest Number 1 as long as we remember defunct retail store chains (Wards, Ames, Kresge, McCrory, Service Merchandise, Ames, Hills, Zayre, others too numberous to name!)
Anyone here remember this chain?
I recall going to them as a kid, and they were pretty nice stores.
Too bad Wieboldt's didn't sell to a large corporation instead of
going under in 1987.
Here's the locations I know about:
- Joliet: Jefferson Sq. Mall (w/ Ward's)
- Lombard: Yorktown Mall (w/ Ward's, Carson's, and Penney's)
- Orland Park: Orland Park Place (w/ Ward's and Main Street (now
Kohl's)
- Evanston (free-standing store AFAIK)
- State Street
And, speaking of Main Street, when did they get started. I know
that that chain was bought by Kohl's in the mid-late '80s. You can
tell a "Main Street" Kohl's from a newer Kohl's from the design of
the store. Main Streets had a compound curve arcing over the
entryways, and typically had multiple stores, and were found in
malls (but not always).

Wards in OH:
The stores were in the State Road shopping center in Cuyahoga Falls,
the Rolling Acres Mall in Akron, and the Canton Centre Mall in
Canton. The Cuyahoga Falls and Canton stores are still closed, with
the Wards signage still up; the store at Rolling Acres was torn
down...a Target is on the site now. Two other vacant Wards stores
are in the Toledo area...in the dead North Towne Mall and the dying
Southwyck Mall. Both stores still have the Wards signage up.

I do remember that in the Cleveland area, during the first time that
Chuck E. Cheese's opened in the early 1980's, that the Southgate
(Maple Heights) store was next door to a former Cunningham drug store
(the restaurant itself was in a former furniture store); the North
Olmsted store (the original location at Lorain and Clague...not the
current location at Great Northern Mall) was in a former Kroger that
is next door to a former Cunningham's as well); the Mentor store was
next door to a former Fazio supermarket, and the Southland
(Middleburg Heights) store was near a Sears, in an out-of the-way
part of the center. When Chuck E. Cheese's filed for bankruptcy
later in the 1980's, the Cleveland area stores closed, and had
reopened briefly as "Marc's Fun Time Pizza Place" (owned by
Marc's...the drugstore chain in Cleveland)...keeping some of the
original Chuck E. Cheese's rides and games. A few years later, Chuck
E. Cheese's made a comeback to the Cleveland area, and opened several
locations, including a location in a former colonial A&P in Fairlawn,
OH.
Curious question: Does anyone remember next door to defunct store chain
stores (Ames, Zayre, Memco/Gemco, Wards, Venture, Hills, etc.) ShowBiz Pizza
Place and/or Chuck E. Cheese's Pizza Time Theatre?

Sunbury: strip shopping center on the north side of town...been

Fairmont, WV Middletown Mall - this was one of the first malls in
WV, however, bigger and nicer malls came later in the 70's when it
began to decline, Hess's stayed there until the end, and the
building was converted into Shop N Save, Dollar General, and
Middletown Mall became more of a strip center than a shopping mall.
Other than the Shop N Save, the mall is pretty much vacated, nothing
much in what's left of the middle, and nothing on the other end,
occupied by Hills, when Ames closed it in 2001.
Daniel
Wards lasted until the death in this region, and was bigger here
than most stores, and in many of the older malls. All still remain,
and some still have Wards signage remaining.
MD
Annapolis - Annapolis Mall (became a Sears same time as Hagerstown)
Frederick - Frederick Towne Mall (unoccupied, last I checked it
still had Wards signage, heard another store is planning on entering
the building)
Glen Burnie - Glen Burnie Mall (becoming Target as posted here)
Hagerstown - Valley Mall (became a Sears a few months ago)
Salisbury - The Centre at Salisbury (unsure of what happened here)
Towson - Eudowood Plaza/Towson Marketplace (this store has a picture
from its grand opening over in the Photos section)
Wheaton - Wheaton Plaza - a Target conversion
PA
Du Bois - Du Bois Mall - split between Old Navy and Dunham's Sports
Greensburg - Greengate Mall - last anchor of the mall left, now the
mall is entirely dead, a picture can be found at www.deadmalls.com
of this Wards, still with original signing up, it was never
remodeled.
Harrisburg - in a shopping center across from the Target, still up
on main center sign.
North Versailles - Eastgate Mall (mall is now unoccupied, unsure
which building it was, I saw it referenced on www.deadmalls.com)
York - York Mall - bulldozed, probably for a Sam's Club expansion.
VA
Fairfax - in a shopping center, one of the newer stores, was told
Target took the space.
Falls Church - Leesburg Pike, became Target I was told.
Manassas - Manassas Mall - became Sears
Winchester - Wards Plaza (auto center now Ford QualityCare service
center, rest of store empty, and waiting for a buyer)
WV
Clarksburg - Meadowbrook Mall (empty, but I see this one becoming
Central WV's first Kaufmann's)
Morgantown - Mountaineer Mall (empty)
Wards also had known locations in Roanoke and Lynchburg Virginia.
There was only 1 in NC to my knowledge - in Rocky Mount.
Any pictures or other Wards locations is greatly appreciated.
Daniel
Awesome. I always liked Montgomery Ward, they were different than
Sears, and I always liked the feeling I got when I walked in their
stores. I remember buying the nicest TV I have in there around
1994, a Sony Trinitron, for about $150 less than anywhere else at
that time. I personally think the world is a sadder place without
Wards....
I'll try to get a list of former locations up in the Baltimore/DC
area soon, and try getting some pictures, some are still unoccupied
with Wards signage.
Daniel
I recently joined this Yahoo! group on the history of retail stores of the past. My father used to work in the Chicago HQ building of Montgomery Ward (Wards) in Chicago until its 2000-2001 demise.
Actually, the Wards store is still there. And still has the Wards logo
on it. This was one of the first three stores in the Wards chain that was
converted to the new format and did quite well.
The rest of Eudowood Plaza, except for Toys R Us and Marshall's,
was torn down and replaced with newly constructed "big box" stores such
as Target, Bed, Bath and Beyond, The Sports Authority, Super Fresh, and
other smaller stores.
The center has also been renamed "Towson Marketplace"
The former Wards site at Towson Marketplace will be taken over by a
division of Sears that will convert the building into a furniture store.
The only Wards store in the Baltimore Metro Area that I know of that
is being converted to a Target is the location at Glen Burnie Mall.
The Golden Ring Wards, last I had checked, is the only remaining component
of the Golden Ring Mall. Other stores, including Hecht's, Caldor/Stewart's,
and all interior shops were demolished to build a new Wal-Mart, Sam's Club,
Home Depot, Applebee's, and a Provident Bank of Maryland branch.

DOH--I'm thinking Springfield PA, not Springfield VA...my bad.

I remember the old Hess's in Harrisburg East, back when the mall was
a dump, and the basement TRU, thank god they moved. Never been in
the Northeastern part of the state, Hazleton, Pottstown, and such,
but I can't believe I forgot Plymouth Meeting, back around 1990, I
was in that mall all the time, but I remember Strawbridge &
Clothier, and Ikea...

Springfield Mall is a ways up the street (west on rt.1)...not sure
what the Target property was originally.

Monkey Wards is in the same shopping center, just down the way from
Toys R Us. Still empty, last I checked (few months ago).

Interestingly enough, when Hess's was there, they only used the main
and upper floors...the basement was a Toys R Us store (which moved
into a newly constructed nearby building when Hecht's redveloped the
store)
There was also a Hess's at Schulkill Mall (off of I-81 south of
Hazleton) which was eventually converted into a "US1 Outlet Store",
Plymouth Meeting Mall (outside Philly) which was converted to a
Boscov's, and I believe there was one at Conventry Mall in Pottstown
(IIRC, it was demolished and replaced with a JCPenney, which closed
and was replaced by Sears)
The Queen City Blvd. modern store (well 1970's modern) is/was the
only market I can recall in MD ever selling beer and wine, as MD
seems the most restrictive states for alcoholic beverage sale, every
market in other surrounding states has a section. Also, the Greene
St. store I was describing as weird came to me as having a place for
a weathervane, so I guess this is a colonial variance, for more of a
corner site, however, that corner philosophy would make little sense
for this site. Another in this identical design to the Greene St.
store is in Bedford, PA where it still amazingly operates as a Giant
Eagle on Juniata St., visible from the new Rt. 30 bypass, but for
Giant Eagle, this is quite a feat, considering Giant Eagle is one of
the first to replace stores. Enjoy this added A&P supplement.
Daniel
Thanks so much for your contributions, especially thanks to whomever
submitted the DC area pictures, very interesting to see some
familiar sites, and I have 2 questions regarding them....
1) Was the Springfield Mall Wards the building that became the
Target there?
...and
2) Is the Eudowood Plaza in Towson off of I-695 where you went down
in off the road, I believe south of Perring Pkwy., located near a
Toys R Us and Best? It seems where I'm remembering a Montgomery
Ward, haven't been in that area for at least a decade now, so I'm
having a hard time remembering anything. I'm going to get my camera
out soon, and get some pictures of Western Maryland retail sites,
some old A&P's, some old Safeways, and newly closed Ames stores and
a Kmart.
Let's take a trip back to a Mid-Atlantic favorite in Hess's. I'm
uncertain as to when the chain began, but it began in Allentown,
PA. The chain grew to 18 stores when in 1978, it was bought by
Crown American from the family that created it. The interesting
part was Crown American was a mall developer in this region, and
built (and still operates) many PA malls. Now it had a strong
anchor to place in every mall. Hess's grew all over the Northeast,
into New York, and even had a Southern division come along. Hess's
got big, then fell bankrupt in the late 80's. The chain began
closing stores, mostly the Southern stores, and eventually folded
around 1994. Most of the stores were sold to the May company and
The Bon-Ton, most of which still operate these stores. Names as
Hecht's and Kaufmann's are parts of the May company, in case you
didn't know.
This is a list of known locations, if anyone knows anymore, please
tell me the city, state, mall, and what is there today.
MD
Frederick - Francis Scott Key Mall (now a Hecht's)
NY
unsure of certain locations, but saw them referenced as being in
malls at www.deadmalls.com
PA
Altoona - Logan Valley Mall (now operating as a Kaufmann's)
Chambersburg - Chambersburg Mall (now operating as JCPenney)
Harrisburg - Capitol City Mall (torn down for a new Hecht's)
Harrisburg - Harrisburg East Mall (now operating as Hecht's)
Johnstown - Richland Mall (operated as a Bon-Ton, the mall has since
been vacated)
Johnstown - West Side Plaza??? (saw the scar for this on a shopping
trip, an early closer, also unsure of the name)
Lancaster - Downtown, unsure of the location, saw this on a site
history of Downtown Lancaster
Uniontown - Uniontown Mall (operated as a furniture store for a
while, now operates as Teletech, telemarketing firm)
York - West Manchester Mall (converted to a Wal-Mart)
TN
Chattanooga - Hamilton Place (2nd Proffitt's store)
Johnson City - The Mall at Johnson City (2nd Proffitt's store)
Kingsport - Fort Henry Mall (2nd Proffitt's store)
Knoxville - West Town Mall (now a Dillard's)
Knoxville - Knoxville Center (now a Dillard's)
Oak Ridge - Oak Ridge Mall (operated as a second Proffitt's, now
vacated I believe)
VA
I remember them having presence in Richmond, in Virginia Center
Commons, Chesterfield Towne Center, both became Proffitt's briefly,
before Dillard's acquired the stores.
WV
Martinsburg - Martinsburg Mall (operating as The Bon-Ton)
Some I believe to be Hess's were in State College at the Nittany
Mall, in Washington at the Washington Crown Center, and in
Harrisburg at Colonial Park Mall, all these 3 are The Bon-Ton now.
A & P was the dominant market chain in Western MD for about a half a
century, however they left the area in 1999. There was a location
in the 1940's on what has now become Queen City Blvd. in Cumberland,
however that location has been demolished, and from some research
I've done appeared to be in the vicinity of Roy Rogers or Taco
Bell. A & P opened a second store in Cumberland on Greene St., with
an interesting architecture. The building was squarish, and in the
corner of the store, doors entered the extremely small store. A
diagram of the design of that store will be posted, but the building
remained an A&P as Super Fresh until around 1998, when the store
finally was closed. It still stands and has been modified some for
Dollar General. A & P then in the 1950's opened a revolutionary
location at the time in the fast growing suburb of La Vale. This
was the first and only colonial style store in Western MD that I am
aware of, and operated as a market for a somewhat short time when
other competition moved into La Vale. The store became a Goldsmit-
Black Catalog Showroom in the late 70's (around what it seems to be
the date this A&P closed), and operated as that until around 1997,
when Staples took the building after Goldsmit-Black went out of
business. It appears the store was remodeled as a facade was placed
over the old colonial style, and the weathervane was removed.
However, even over the Staples red, you can see the roof style of
the colonial store. A&P also built a new store somewhere in the
1960's in the new Grant's Shopping Center in South Cumberland. The
store had the brown facade that was placed on the remodel of the
colonial store in La Vale. This store operated through the change
from Grant's to Hills, then the change from Hills to Ames. The
market held strong as being one of the few markets in South
Cumberland, the store closed around 1997, and now operates as Save A
Lot. Around this time period, A&P opened a store in Frostburg.
This store had a very simple design. Doors on each side, and a
simple aluminum bar going across the middle of the front of the
store, with the sign anchored above the bar. The store was one of
the earlier closures in the early 90's and began operation as a Mor
for Less. The last A&P built in Western Maryland was the store in
the new Downtown Revitalization project around 1975. A&P opened the
largest store in the area at the time, being the only A&P at the
time selling beer and wine, and having a Deli and Bakery. The store
outlasted all of the others because of slightly larger size. The
store lasted until 2001, and was the last attempt by A&P to stay in
Western Maryland. The store was somewhat awkward. It had a small
brown facade in the front, and then next to that one door leading
out over a covered drive-thru where possibly a conveyor belt was, I
haven't been able to confirm that yet. The store has been divided
and the right 1/2 is occupied by Family Dollar now.
A&P (SuperFresh as the stores became named in the 1990's) came here
in the 1940's and dominated the area until the 90's. National
competitors of Acme and Safeway left, as regional competitors in
Martin's, County Market, and Food Lion would enter, bringing new
stores with added conveniences and lower prices. These more
regional chains ended up taking the market share from A &P for
keeping with the times, and not maintaining old stores. Many of
these old A&P's would still remain most likely if they had been kept
cleaner and prices had been lowered. Hope you enjoyed this history
of A&P in Western Maryland, others will be coming profiling other
chains of the region....and the nation.

I remember shopping at Clover in the early 90's when I made trips to
the Park City Center in Lancaster. Clover was in the basement,
below Sears, JCPenney, The Bon-Ton (back then it was called Watt &
Shand), and Boscov's, and the rest of the mall. I liked Clover,
they had some cool stuff, and prices seemed good. Of course the
chain met its fate when the parent, Philadelphia department store
Strawbridge & Clothier hit rocky financial times and sold out to the
May Company. May didn't see the place for a discount store in their
portfolio, and Clover was closed. Park City now has a Kohl's in the
old Clover space. I remember one when I lived in Philadelphia
somewhere now, but I only remember the 2. Saw more Zayres,
Bradlees, and Kmarts when I lived in Philly.
Daniel
Hi folks, I'm really pleased to see this group was started because
I'm hoping I might hear from some other old Clover associates out
there. {Clover was a discount store chain in the Philadelphia-South
Jersey area that went out of business a few years ago.}I spent three
years toiling in the Clover store in Mercerville, NJ from around 85-
88 and it's still a big part of me.
