The purpose of this group is discussion of the genealogy and history of a group of mixed-race people in southwestern Louisiana and southeastern Texas who are frequently called "redbones". This term is controversial because it has often been taken to imply an Afro-American ancestry which most of our people do not accept. As a result, many of our people refuse to use "redbone" in reference to themselves while others don't even know the term exists in this sense. Although we also do not like the term, we nevertheless recognize that "redbone" is widely known as an ethnonym for our people and can serve usefully as a referent until a more appropriate term is found or coined. The focus of our discussion and research will not be limited to genealogy, history, and the terminological problem, but shall also extend to all aspects of the past, present, and future lives of these our people. This group is not affiliated with the Redbone Heritage Foundation.

This is not a public forum; you must be a redbone descendant or a spouse of one to join. It is also not a chat board; if you merely want to say hi! to your buddy or catch up with the latest gossip, please go somewhere else. Mature behavior will be expected, and we shall endeavor to be and remain serious about our research. In case that's not enough, rules of group etiquette will be posted as soon as possible and enforced. We shall try to avoid making the mistakes made by the other "redbone" groups.
