We are
in the final weeks of the campaign and there are many things that have been
asked of us to accomplished before December 8. We have events to attend,
signs to deliver and set up, and many other tasks that will all help to insure
that the renaissance in this city continues for ourselves and generations to
come.
The
first event is tomorrow we are having a “Tweetup” at Buffalo Wild
Wings on NW Expressway. We will promote this “Tweetup” as a
way to learn more about MAPS while watching the OKC Thunder game at a cool
place and enjoying “Wing Tuesdays” (40-cent wing night)! We
will need you there from 5:30 until the game is over (tip-off is at
6:30). We will have a speaker that will give a little “pep
talk” to our “team” before the game, and will view the MAPS
video featuring Mayor Cornett in lieu of a “halftime speech.”
On
Thursday of this week, we will be getting together at the Chamber of Commerce
located at 123 Park Ave. in downtown OKC to finish building the yard
signs. We will be gathering from 11:30-3 pm and 5:30-8 pm. We will
buy you lunch/dinner so please let me know if you are able to come. Dress
in clothes that you are willing to get dirty.
Sunday,
November 22 we will start the process of putting big Yes MAPS signs throughout
the city. We will need people in teams of two (each team needs a large
vehicle to carry the signs). We will send your team to set these signs up
so please bring a hammer, dress warmly, and prepared to get a little dirty.
Please email me if you are able to come.
A
Christmas Arts and Crafts Show is being held at the State Fair Grounds November
28 and 29th. We will have a booth located in the building and
need people to welcome and share information of the upcoming vote. The
shifts are as followed:
Saturday
10 am – 1 pm Sunday 10
am – 1:30 pm
1
pm – 4pm 1:30
pm – 5 pm
4
pm – 7 pm
Starting
November 29 with the Houston game, we will have a volunteer presence at the
Thunder games. So come on down and work a game or two. We
also have the Train Show in December. Attached is a List of upcoming
events to help you. Please contact me and let me know what you are able
to do.

Terry and I will be heading up there on Saturday to participate in the DOG and camp.
There are several other members that have expressed interest in going as well, so we should have a great group going.

This is a great social event with lots of dutch oven cooking, kayaking, camping, and networking with lots of other paddlers and their families from Oklahoma.

Our chapter will be hosting the ACC Board Meeting on Oct 24 2009 from 10am-2pm.
All members are welcome to attend the meeting.
We will be doing Dragon boat paddling after the meeting, around 2 pm. So please anyone who is interested in dragonboating come on out. We would like to get enough paddlers to race the Arkansas group, who have never dragonboated! So lets get together and show them how we do it in Oklahoma.
We would like to keep the dragonnboat team alive and racing this season, so lets get some practice in and have some fun. If we get enough people we can also form 2 teams for next seasons races.
We are thinking about having a cook out/ picnic after the races and paddling, so let me know if you can make it. If the water is up we can paddle up into the Stinchcomb area, so you might want to bring your kayak.
Meeting and dragonboating will occur at the boat house on the Oklahoma River near lake Olverholser, I will email out some more directions later this week,
We will also be hanging out and going downtown to go to the Ghouls Gone Wild Halloween Parade that starts at 7pm downtown Oklahoma city, if you would like to meet up for the parade and go out in bricktown, email am let me know to look for you
We will be meeting at the Deep Deuce Grill in bricktown this upcoming Tuesday Oct 13 th after work 530pm
Please come with ideas for the upcoming Board Meeting Oct 24th, and please let me know if you would be willing to host a fellow paddler from Arkansas, LA, OK either Friday or Saturday night. I would image that most will come down Friday night, and some will stay Saturday. This is the 1st time that our chapter has hosted the board meeting for the entire club, and the 1st time that it has ever been held in Oklahoma, so lets show them all how us Okie Paddlers do it!!!
Also, discuss upcoming events and paddling, and socializing of course!!
Anyone participating in the Dragon Boat Races and for anyone who wants to come out and cheer the Red Dirt paddlers on, here is the information send to us on where to be, park ect for the race. We should plan on getting a group picture this year before the race, I will plan on bringing my camera! Bring your lawn chairs, water, entrance fee and your dragon power !!!!
Any questions call Terry DeMoe 306 5067
or email lapaddler@...
if you have someones email that I dont that is paddling please foward directions to them, and let me know! Trying to update my email list.
Dragon Power!!!
Hello Dragon Boat Captains,
With the long anticipated Boot of the Oklahoma just two days away, it is time to get down to business and go over the schedule of events. This email will be fairly long, but please read it carefully as it includes specific details that will be important to know. PLEASE NOTE: THE REGATTA WILL TAKE PLACE AT THE EXCHANGE AVENUE BOATHOUSE. DIRECTIONS ATTACHED.
RACE SCHEDULE: The race schedule is attached, but there are a couple of things to note:
This regatta must go on time. We plan to start the first race promptly at 1:00 pm on Sunday. If you are in the 1st Dragon Boat Heat, you MUST be ready to get underway NO LATER than 12:45. I strongly suggest that teams arrive by 12:00 noon.
The last race of the day starts at 4:30.
You will launch from the temporary dock next to the railroad bridge. It will be clearly marked.
Be in uniform and ready to go down on the dock 30 minutes before your race. (If you want a team picture, take it before you get to the dock).
Wait to go to your boat until told to do so by the Dock Master.
If you are going to wear sunscreen (and we strongly advise that you do), have someone else apply it for you, as it is difficult to paddle with sunscreen on your hands.
Do not eat a big meal within 2 hours of your race. Drink plenty of water.
Don’t worry about your steerer, they are doubling up and may be in another race.
We will NOT have tents for teams to use. If you would like to bring a tent, you are welcome to do so. Bring blankets and lawn chairs as well.
RESULTS
Will be posted in the award stage tent.
We will make every effort to have them posted in a timely manner after each race.
AWARDS
The awards ceremony will start within 30 minutes of the last race (approximately 5:00).
Medals will be awarded to the top three finishing teams.
PARKING The downtown Airpark has plenty of parking for everyone. The entrance is at the corner of SW 25th and Western. Map is attached. Please forward the map and directions to anyone you think may be coming to watch you. There will NOT be any parking available at the Exchange Boathouse. That parking lot will be the staging area for the Athlete Village. The Airpark is actually very convenient for spectators of the races on Sunday, as it is directly adjacent to the sprint course.
RESTROOMS
The will be port-o-johns in two locations that will be clearly marked.
WATER
There will be coolers of bottled water for ATHLETES on/near the dock.
There will also be large orange coolers of water on on/near the dock.
There will be two food vendors selling water for spectators, but please tell your expected guests to prepare for the heat accordingly.
FOOD
There will be a b-b-q set up for athletes on Sunday, beginning around 3:00.
Athletes will be given a meal voucher at check-in, which will allow them free access to the food tent.
Guests may purchase food from the two food vendors, Deep Fork and Belle Isle.
Encourage your teammates and your guests to bring lawn chairs and blankets.
REGISTRATION TABLE
Will be set up in the information tent at 11:00.
All TEAM CAPTAINS must check-in here, where you will be given meal vouchers for your teams.
Race schedules will be available here.
No doubt I am forgetting something, so feel free to remind me.
We’re looking forward to a great event and hope you are too!!
Thanks everyone!

Captains, Attached is a schedule for your races. Another email will be following shortly that has more details about parking, where to pick up your race packets, a map...and HOW TO GET SOME GOOD GRUB.
I just want to make sure you all understand the directions below; we are going to be on a tight schedule so we'll need your team there on time, and ready to launch.
Have your teams gather 20 minutes prior to race time to the East side of the railroad bridge. This is where your team will get their paddle and PFD. Boats will launch 10 minutes prior to race time regardless of how many paddlers are in attendance.
I'm looking forward to a fun weekend and seeing you on the water.
There is an upcoming Dragonboat race on Sunday Oct 4, that's next snday on the Oklahoma River.
Please email me or Terry and let us know if you can participate in the race.
We will need 10 people for the race. If you would please respond to this email and say either YES ( I can make the OCT 4th race ) or NO ( I can not make the OCT 4th race) that would be greatly appreciated. If we get 10 people saying they can race I will email out Sunday evening to confirm the practices for next week.
Practice will be on Tue Sept 29th and Thur Oct 1 of next week after work at 530pm
If you can not make this race, but would like to be in on the next dragonboat races please email me or Terry and let us know to add you to the team email list.
Also the upcoming Board Meeting is on OCT 24th , please email me if you could host 1 or more people at your house FRiday and or Saturday night, since the other members will be coming in from Arkansas, LA, and OK
Thanks

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Standing before a large crowd at the Oklahoma River near downtown Oklahoma City, Acting Chief Executive Officer of the United States Olympic Committee (USOC), Stephanie Streeter , today announced the designation of two U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Training Sites in Oklahoma. City officials from Oklahoma City and Edmond, Okla., and citizens from throughout the area listened as the USOC named the Oklahoma River south of downtown Oklahoma City, in partnership with the Oklahoma City Boathouse Foundation, as an official U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Training Site for rowing and canoe/kayak. The University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond, Okla., already a Paralympic site, added the Olympic designation to become an
official site for volleyball, archery and Paralympic sports.
"This is an exciting announcement for the USOC and for Oklahoma City and the University of Central Oklahoma as together we are expanding opportunities for our nation's athletes to train in world class facilities," Streeter said. "The communities of Oklahoma City and Edmond have demonstrated a deep commitment to the Olympic Movement. The Oklahoma River, including the new boathouses, finish line tower and proposed
whitewater center, will attract top events and athletes as well as enhance a vibrant downtown. And, UCO will expand upon years of dedication to Paralympic sport when Olympians, Paralympians and hopefuls make their home in Edmond. These new programs and facilities will provide a welcome home for current and future members of Team USA as they train to make their Olympic and Paralympic dreams a reality."
The Oklahoma River designation includes the river's 2000-meter race course
and National High Performance Center, both projects of the OKC Boathouse Foundation (OKCBF). The University of Central Oklahoma Olympic Training Site will include archery and volleyball, as well as Paralympic sports.
"As a community, we believe in the value of the Olympic Movement for our country," said Olympic gold medal winning gymnast Bart Conner. "We hosted the United States Olympic Festival in 1989 and we have never
hesitated to support United States Olympic and Paralympic athletes and the values they stand for -- excellence, discipline, the spirit of fair play. I am so proud of what we have achieved through MAPs to transform our community and put us in a position to receive Olympic Training Site designations. The future is bright and today's announcement is only the beginning of great things to come."
MAPs, Oklahoma City's Metropolitan Area Projects initiative, provided more than
$50 million in funding to develop the seven miles of river lakes now known as the Oklahoma River.
The mission of the U.S. Olympic Training Sites is to deliver additional resources, services and facilities for athletes and National Governing Bodies (NGBs) while providing an elite athlete training environment that positively impacts performance. With the addition of the Oklahoma River and UCO designations, the USOC now partners with 10 different Sites as part of a national
training system of world class facilities across the United States. In 2008, more than 1,000 U.S. National Team athletes trained at the Sites, which boasted 139 members of the 2008 U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Teams who came away with 12 medals.
OKLAHOMA RIVER "We are becoming an increasingly significant player in the national and international sports world because of the Oklahoma River and the support of
community-minded corporations like Devon Energy, Chesapeake Energy and OG&E," commented Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett . "Today's announcement by the USOC further validates the public and private investments we have made in the Oklahoma River are returning great dividends to our community. We are well on our way to developing the premier sports and recreational center in the country for kayaking, rowing and canoeing. The proposed whitewater sports and recreational center will offer our citizens and athletes an incredible experience."
The Oklahoma River has been the site of numerous national and international competitions hosted by the OKC Boathouse Foundation (OKCBF), including the USA Rowing World Challenge in 2007 and the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials -- Canoe/Kayak for flatwater sprint. The National Governing Bodies of USRowing and USA Canoe/Kayak have both named the Oklahoma River as a national training site. The OKCBF's National High Performance Center hosted the USRowing Men's Under 23 National Team Selection Camp in June.
OKCBF Executive Director Mike Knopp sees the further development of boathouses and a planned finish line tower as taking the Oklahoma River "to the next level."
"Construction of the Devon Boathouse, home of Oklahoma City University rowing, is well underway and it will
be a focal point of the National High Performance Center," Knopp said. "The planned Chesapeake Finish Line Tower will meet international racing standards, taking our course to the next level. After that, we need to finish out the venue - truly make it an international sports complex with timing and lighting infrastructure and modern grandstands."
"We have earned the confidence of the U.S. Olympic Committee and international athletes who've already trained and raced here,"
Knopp said. "We look forward to giving Olympians, Paralympians and hopefuls a world-class facility and a place where they can train and compete alongside the best from around the world. We are excited about the Oklahoma River's future and what it can mean to our city and the U.S. Olympic Movement."
UNIVERSITY OF CENTRAL OKLAHOMA "Central is committed to providing an opportunity-rich environment to enable people to
become productive, creative, ethical and engaged citizens and leaders, and this designation as an official U.S. Olympic Training Site exemplifies that commitment," said University of Central Oklahoma (UCO) President W. Roger Webb. "We couldn't be more proud to serve the community and the country as a partner with the United States Olympic Committee."
UCO's involvement in Paralympic sports began in 2000, when it hosted
the first annual Endeavor Games for athletes with physical disabilities. The disabled sporting event continued to grow and in 2004 a sitting volleyball demonstration was held by the U.S. Men's National Sitting Volleyball Team. The following year at the 6th annual Endeavor Games, USA Volleyball announced UCO as the official site of Men's National Sitting Volleyball Team, making the university an official U.S. Paralympic Training Site.
Since 2005, UCO has continued to build on
its success as a national training site. The university hosts the men's and women's sitting volleyball teams. There are currently nine resident athletes who live and train on the campus in the sports of sitting volleyball, track & field and archery.
UCO resident athletes brought the Training Site international glory, having a successful run at the 2008 Paralympic Games in Beijing. The U.S. Women's Sitting Volleyball Team won the silver medal after falling to the
host-nation China. Katrin Greene, a German track athlete, won gold in the 200 meter sprint in Beijing. T.J. Pemberton, a Guthrie native and Paralympic archer, finished fourth in the men's individual compound open competition.
"With a successful run at the 2008 Paralympic Games and the new Olympic designation, UCO looks forward to continuing to contribute to the U.S. Olympic Movement," saidKatrina Shaklee, Director of Sports and
Recreation at the UCO Wellness Center. "UCO is devoted to expanding its Paralympic and Olympic services and venues for the elite athletes in training."
UCO was recently named the official training site for the U.S. Powerlifting Team. The university will also host the Disabled Volleyball World Championships in July 2010.

Several members have reported that there is a problem
that our kayakers are having with one Lake Patrol Officer at Lake Hefner
who appears to have a hostile attitude toward kayakers (in general) at Lake Hefner
Kayakers are being told by him one or more of the following three things
1. That kayaking at night on Lake Hefner is not allowed...at all
2. or...That to kayak at night on Lake Hefner they must have a red/green light
attached to the front of their kayaks
3. That the OKC Ordinance requiring red/green lights on kayaks on OKC area lakes is a NEW Ordinance and has not yet been printed
The OKC Outdoor Network has gone back (to Nov 2008) and looked at the Agenda's for the OKC Parks and Recreation Department and the OKC Game & Fish Department
and could not find where the red/green light issue has even been brought up for discussion
Chapter 38 PARKS, RECREATION, CULTURAL AFFAIRS, ETC.*

********************************
About 5-6 years ago...members of the OKC Outdoor Network where told by a Lake Patrol Officer at the Lake Overholser/Stinchcomb Wildlife Refuge that red/green lights were required on our kayaks.
One of our members was an attorney and she contacted the OKC "City Attorneys Office "
and the issued was resolved.
********************************
Currently(in regard to our kayakers on Lake Hefner)
the procedure we need to follow
in getting this issue resolved is
If you feel you have been harassed
or are being told something contrary to the current OKC Ordinance
for boating on OKC area waters...
PLEASE !!!!
Contact the OKC Patrol Division at: 271-1000 (generic department phone number)
Ask for:
Major Nees (# 1 man - in the patrol division)
and if he is not available ask for
Captain Willoughby
and let them know what happened in your situation
If enough people will call in and report
what this guy is doing on Lake Hefner
we can get this fixed !!!!
I know we all want to follow the rules when out on OKC area lakes.
But, to have one person enforce hisown version of the rules is just plain wrong !!!!
