id anyone miss me? I've been gone for 1 ½
months. We've only picked up two new members in all that
time! Doesn't anyone have anything to talk about? How
is everyone doing?<br><br>Well I've been busy like I
guess most of you have been with the holidays and all.
I'm currently on a jury for a criminal case. My big
shipment of raw food books came in, at least most of them
did, and I've been absolutely absorbed in reading
them. I've learned quite a bit. One of them, "Nature's
First Law: The Raw-Food Diet", I read through three
times-like a mad man! I underscored about every third line.
I loved it! Thanks to the convincing arguments of
it's three authors I finally made the jump from 70% to
100% raw. So for the last six weeks I've been 100%
raw, no meat, fish, bread, ice cream… just fruits,
vegetables, nuts and seeds. It's been wonderful. It probably
helped that I was 70% for 6 months but this book gave me
all I needed to go all the way. And you know what? I
don't miss a thing… no cravings for what I no longer
eat. Cravings for ice cream left long ago along with
meat. I think bread and pasta were the hardest things
for me to forego. But I did. I can ride right past
that bagel shop without a sweat now. And cooked food?
It's poison. I just don't want cooked food at all any
more. I'm going to share some of the items that were
new to me from this book in a later post. Until then,
if you are interested, you can get it from
<a href=http://www.rawfood.com target=new>http://www.rawfood.com</a><br><br>At
the same time I gave up watching TV and listening
to the radio. I'm a news junky and really like
listening to talk radio. But I find that there is so much
junk on that it gets me all worked up and mad. My wife
hates driving with me when the radio is on because I
get involved with the daily issues. So I finally
realized that all news was just making me mad and I wanted
to put an end to it. Looking back did it really
matter to me what the final outcome of the O.J. case was
or what it will be in the Monica Affair? Ok, I'm
going to get stuck in traffic now and then and I'm
going to miss a sale some day and I'm going to get
caught in the rain. But I'm banking that one less
aggravation in my life is going to pay dividends to my family
and me. So good-bye Bob Grant, Rush Limbaugh and
Jerry Springer… and hello to my family, friends and
great literature.

n my new book purchase I picked out one on
"Natural Hygiene". I never heard of it before except in
passing. There is a Yahoo club for it though. The
description for the book sounded interesting but I thought it
was going to be too "new age" for me. Well it wasn't
and I am so very glad I purchased it. The book is
called "Awakening Our Self-Healing Body: A Solution to
the Health Care Crisis" by Arthur M. Baker, M.A. I
finished reading it and lent it out to my relative to
read. When I get it back I'll tell you much more about
it. Do a search in Yahoo for "Natural Hygiene" when
you can. It's a whole way of taking care of yourself,
"self-care", without medicine. To be HEALTHY you have to lead
a HEALTHY LIFESTYLE. Of course a big part of it is
food and Natural Hygiene promotes raw and living foods
so you will fit right in. But it also covers all
those other aspects of healthy living that I wrote
about in an early post-the need for sleep, clean air,
water, love, etc. I didn't know Natural Hygiene existed
and it seems to be perfect for me! Now this book
didn't cover all these areas in detail. It focuses on
toxic waste in the body-what it is, what the body does
to get rid of it, and what happens to us when the
body can't get rid of it. It talks about all those
disease symptoms of fever, colds, nausea, joint pain,
headaches, etc. I had absolutely no problems accepting it's
line of thought-I've believed much of it before
without knowing what to call it. But this book did a
great job of putting it all together in a very detailed
manner. It didn't cover a lot of different topics but it
really drove the point home.<br><br>My online friends,
if you have some extra cash get these two books. The
first is $14.95 and the second is $12.95. That's less
than the cost of one visit to the doctor... and by
following these two books I promise that you will save much
more than this in your future health
bills.<br><br>"Awakening…" mentioned another Natural Hygiene book called
"Fit for Life II: Living Health" by Harvey and Marilyn
Diamond. I went to the books store the other day and found
it. The paperback is $7.50 and it is over 400 pages.
How could I resist? Now I just started to read it but
it looks like another winner. It DOES try to cover
all the different Natural Hygiene issues! Am I the
last person to get this book? It was published ten
years ago! I wish I read it back then! I did read "Fit
for Life," many, many years ago and I thought it had
merit especially with the "only fruit and fruit juices
before 12 noon" statement. But the "Fit for Life" book
was strictly a "diet" book. This follow-up book is
the whole works… Natural Hygiene. I bet there is a
"Fit for Life" club on Yahoo or at least there should
be. I like what I've read so far but I am really
SHOCKED to see "cooked food", meat and fish recipes in
the last chapter. They have earlier chapters against
cooked food and animal products but there are those
recipes… I don't get it. But the rest of the book looks
very worth while for those who only have $7.50 to
spend.<br><br>So there are my 3 book recommendations for now. Read
them and let's discuss them. I'm looking forward to a
much healthier new year.<br><br>-OrionsDad

unday night my wife and I had her sister and
husband over for dinner. They are also into raw foods so
my wife prepared a real smorgasbord of raw food
delights. <br><br>We started with cream of mushroom and
pepper soup, had 3 entrees consisting of yam burgers,
seed loaf and spinach pie, then topped the night off
with 3 raw desserts, fudge truffles, Afrikande (dates,
raisins, coconut and nuts), and tofu pie (like cheese
cake) with raspberry topping (might have been cooked).
I of course had 2 servings of everything and when I
was putting things away, and no one was looking, I
had still more of the Afrikande and then made a
coconut smoothie. WHAT THE HECK WAS I THINKING!<br><br>I
woke up at night with sever stomach pain. Soon I was
vomiting. Back to bed for a few hours and then vomiting
again. Then before morning the diarrhea started. The
next day I was too sick to work so I fasted and stayed
in bed. By the next day I was much better but very
weak, so I had just more water, raw juices and one
apple. Today I am back to normal.<br><br>My wife thinks
I had the flu but I don't. I think it was BAD FOOD
COMBINING along with OVEREATTING. When I think about all
the different ingredients in all those recipes it is
no wonder that my body rejected them. A lot of raw
foodist believe that you should only eat one type of food
at a time… and they may very well be correct. When
we eat more than one food at a time the body gets or
creates enzymes specific to the food that we just ate.
Some enzymes do not work well with each other. Enzymes
to digest protein (like nuts and seeds) are alkaline
and enzymes to digest starches are acidic. Eat
protein and starches together and the enzymes work
against each other leaving the food to sit in the stomach
more than the usual 3 hours. So the foods start to rot
and you get sick. Good food combining practice also
says that fruits should be eaten on an empty stomach.
Fruits do not require digestion in the stomach so they
are in and out in about 20 minutes. But if you just
had a nice big protein meal like I had then the fruit
just sits behind the protein in the stomach and
ferments for those 3 hours waiting for the protein to get
out of the way. Yes, having fruit deserts AFTER you
meal is not a good idea even though everyone does
it.<br><br>So this illness was a real strong reminder to me
that I should be more observant in food combining and
not overeating… even if it is all raw.<br><br>There
are many food combing charts in the health books.
Find one that you can understand, cut it out and put
in on the inside of you kitchen cabinets where you
can refer to it as you prepare your meals. There are
even 3 categories of fruits - acid, sweet and
sub-acid. The sweet and the acid fruits do not go well
together so it is important NOT to combine them when you
make a juice or smoothie. An orange, grapefruit, or
pineapple (acid fruits) can all be combined together but
should not be mixed with a banana, dates, or figs (all
sweet fruits). They might taste great together and I
guess it won't kill you to do it once and a while but
ideally it is not the best combination for your
body.<br><br>One other big food combining rule that I always do
remember and practice is "Eat melons alone or leave them
alone". You can eat all different melons separately or
together but not with anything else.<br><br>-OrionsDad

ell Dadster, I'm glad you're back. It's been
pretty lonely here on the raw food frontier.<br><br>And
it's marvellous that you haven't lost your heroic
delusion that raw food can solve our problems. Vomiting,
diarrhea, unable to sleep or work, nothing will deter our
march to the promised land.<br><br>We need an obsessive
leader who will sacrifice himself so that we can feel
guilty. You're not a human being, but a sign pointing us
to the land of raw milk and honey.<br><br>Without
you I couldn't be a moderate. One month away is too
long. This bulletin board fell to pieces while you were
away. So there will be no more holidays for
you!<br><br>I suck on a peach and celebrate your return in
apple juice!<br><br>Victor.

ell I'm glad Victor is glad.<br><br>Sometimes I
don't know how to take you Victor. I'm neither under
the "heroic delusion" that raw food will solve our
problems nor an "obsessive leader who will sacrifice
himself" so that you will feel guilty. This is just an
avenue to share our common experiences with a raw food
diet both good and bad. I just happen to be sharing
more than the others are right now. But it is funny
what you say. My experiences with raw food have all
been good except when I flagrantly abuse myself with
it.<br><br>I've recently read that Fruitarians are big in
Australia so you're in good company. And I've learned that
fruits ARE the most ideal raw food for us.<br><br>NOW
FOR THE SPROUTER INFORMATION:<br><br>I've sprouted
for years and have never really been happy with any
sprouting setup. There's always a problem with whatever
method I use whether it is in time, room, expense, etc.
Well I saw a sprouter ad on the web that caught my
interest and I made a note of it. But the other day I was
in my local healthfood store and there it was. It
cost me $8.99. I grew my first batch of sunflower
sprouts in it and I am very happy with it. This is the
first time I have ever really found sprouting to be
VERY SIMPLE. <br><br>The sprouter is called
"EASYSPROUT" made by Sproutamo. Here's one of the few urls I
could find so you can see a diagram of
it:<br><br><a href=http://www.sproutpeople.com/devices.html
target=new>http://www.sproutpeople.com/devices.html</a><br><br>It's not a very
good diagram though. It's very well
designed. I wish I thought of it. It's a liter plastic cup
inside another larger plastic cup. The inside cup has
small holes in the bottom. When you insert the inside
cup it leaves about a ¼ inch space for water
drainage. Then there is a vented lid that fits on top. You
can soak, rinse, sprout and store you sprouts all on
the same container. Very well thought out. It's the
perfect size for family but I'll probably go out and buy
one or two more for variety. The key advertised
features are: larger batches, less time to harvest (8-48
hrs), minimal sprout disturbance, longer storage life,
and the ability to grow sprouts with NO RINSING! I
grew my sunflower sprouts with no rinsing in a total
of 14 hours!<br><br>Now this is not one of those
commercial models so you can sprout a bushel full of seeds
everyday that costs several hundreds of dollars. It's the
under $10 model that will allow you to sprout enough
for you and your family with minimal time and effort
and still get excellent results.<br><br>So what do
you know? Another happy customer! How
rare!<br><br>-OrionsDad

want to tell you about something that I think
is very strange and I’d like to know if anyone else
has experienced it.<br><br>About a month ago I
started working out very hard with dumbbells and doing
crunches and push-ups. After about 2 weeks I woke up one
morning and realized that my body was not the least bit
sore. NOTHING! Now I lifted for about 8 years in high
school and college and I remember that I HAD to rest at
least 1 day between heavy workouts. In later years at
the gym I found that I had to rest at least 3-4 days
because my muscles were so tight at times that I couldn’t
even straighten out my arms all the way. I think some
of you know what I am talking about.<br><br>Now
either I don’t have ANY muscles left after this raw food
diet in which case I will never feel any pain OR the
muscles I do have are not as toxic as they were before
and they are allowing me to lift without the
slightest pain. I’m telling you that I am doing push-ups to
the point of exhaustion several times a day and those
"safe" sit-ups all day long and I don’t have any pain.
Nada, zip. Like I didn’t do a thing. <br><br>Now I’m
not complaining. I think it is wonderful. I’m just
curious. If there are any other raw food weightlifters out
there who can verify this for me I’d like to hear from
you. The problem is that the weightlifters I know are
all doing the "power protein" drink thing and they
don’t know what I’m talking about.<br><br>-OrionsDad

hen I became health conscience and tried to eat
in a healthier manner I found that my trips to the
supermarket taking less time. There were many aisles I never
had to go down. I'd skip the aisles with snacks,
canned foods, sodas and such because there was nothing
there I wanted to take home. So I would get those items
I thought were "healthy" at the time and then spend
the rest of my time over at the health store. I
remember thinking to myself how nice it was that I can
just buy anything in the health store and not worry if
it was good for me or not.<br><br>Now that I'm
trying to eat only raw and living foods I am finding
that I am spending more time in the supermarkets!
That's right. I guess I'm reading too much on this raw
food topic. I was in one of my health stores to buy a
bag of organic almonds for my son and just decided to
walk up and down the aisles and look over the products
on the shelves. You know, with the different
perspective that I have now there is almost nothing I want to
buy in the health store anymore. Unless you happen to
have a really good "health" store that focuses on
providing you with produce, grains and seeds, etc. your
health store might not look much different than a
regular grocery store or pharmacy. Aisle after aisle of
boxed and processed foods-cookies, candies, chips,
power drinks (filled with sugar), protein drinks and
the like. Then of course there are walls full of
vitamin and mineral supplement bottles, and other
concoctions for you to buy so you can avoid what ever ails
you and your family. I wonder whether some of these
health stores really care about selling you healthy food
at all!<br><br>I have yet to find a good store that
sells a wide variety of organic produce. It is nice to
see the larger supermarket chains stocking organic
fruits and vegetables. But I usually find that I have to
visit several of the supermarkets, including an Asian
market, and buy up all the cheaper priced organic produce
I can find before I finally return to the health
store to pay the higher price on foods I couldn't find
elsewhere. Sometimes the supermarkets have even more organic
produce then the health market!<br><br>Since I was doing
more produce shopping for the family I found that I
did better if I picked out a few recipes I or the
wife would make based on what items we currently had
and then go out and buy whatever we needed. It didn't
make sense to me to buy a head of cauliflower or
broccoli just because it was there and not use it right
away. I shop more often this way but I think it is
worth it.<br><br>I also typed up a big shopping list of
items I normally buy for recipes. My idea is to post it
on the fridge and just circle items as we ran out.
Maybe some of you already do this. I also made
notations on the list as to where I would most likely find
the item at the best price. That way it served as a
reminder to look for other items whenever I was in a
particular store. I'll post my shopping list in my next
entry so that others can use it too.<br><br>-OrionsDad

_Luv_Jamiroquai, I was 100% earlier this year
but blew it at a few social gatherings. It's just so
easy drop to one's guard and sneek in some cooked
"goodies". I guess I'm back to 80% for now.<br><br>Nature's
First Law is a great book and I'm glad you are reading
it. As it turns out, David Wolfe, one of the authors
just gave a 2 hour talk at my local health food store.
What a pleasure it was to see him and hear what he had
to say about raw food. He says that you will benefit
by increasing raw food in your diet no matter how
little the increase but for "fantastic" changes you need
to do 100% (like for 3 months or more). I also have
his new book "The Sunfood Diet Success System" where
he advocates 80%+ raw plant food and then move
forward from there towards 100%. I came close to doing it
and I really did notice changes especially "clarity
of mind"... and there is a lot to be said for that.
He also said that doing 80% raw gets you 80% of the
results whereas 100% raw gets you 1000% of the results.
<br><br>I have not been to a health spa but I say a very
nice on on the internet in British Columbia, Canada.
It looked like a great place to relax and they
served all raw meals. If I find the link to it again I
will post it for you.<br><br>-OrionsDad

I am a new member to this club and I want to say
hello to all of you:) I find the subject of the raw
foods diet quite interesting. I am a vegetarian and
have been so since i was 12. Now I am about 50% raw
but hope to be 85%-100%, that is my goal. Not many
people are very supportive of this type of lifestyle i
find because it is againsed the norm. So I find it
hard to keep it up. I am glad to find a club like this
it makes me feel I am not the only one interested
faw foodism. <br> If any of you have good recipies I

Hey singhlion how've you been? As for switching
to the raw food lifestyle I know you can do it if
you really put your heart into giving what your body
really craves, and that is healthy, non processed,
natural foods:)<br> As for vitamin B-12, I take spirulia
which is a type of alge that is a complete protein and
has a good supply of B-12.It is a great vegetarian
source for that vitamin and protein. Also I drink
Edensoy which has a good supply of B-12 from the veggie
kingdom as well. I know Edensoy is not nessesary a raw
food but I believe soy is very healthy for you and I
will always incorporate it in my diet since it is a
good sourse of protien, B-12 and other vitamins:)<br>
So it is really hard to be deficiant in B-12 even if
you are a vegetarian:) <br> I wish you well and that
you will always be full of happiness, joy and
peace:)<br> Your friend,<br> Jamie

I was experimenting and I came up with veggie
stuffed peppers and it is easy! You blend bean sprouts in
a blender, add garlic, celery, and braggs liquid
amnios and other herbs to taste. Then put 4 baby
tomatoes in the 4 corners of the pepper pour the blended
bean sprouts in the pepper and put slices of avocado
and parsely on top! It is delisious! Hope you all

Dear Victor, <br><br>By "fuss" I meant what is
the fuss about changing over from SAD or whatever to
raw food? I just did it, virtually overnight from
chicken, fish, veggies, fruit, to fruit only for about 3
month and felt no ill effects, except a bit of detox
first, more energy, and just healthier, and after about
3 month I added raw veggies, and a bit of sprouted
bread here and there. Of course, according to everyone

Dear Vela,<br><br>I admire your energy and
optimism but if changing to raw food was as easy and as
beneficial as you imply, everyone would eat raw
food.<br><br>Changing to raw food is more difficult than changing one's
country and language. It's much more difficult than
changing your house or your job or your
spouse.<br><br>Change produces stress and we can handle just so much
stress at one time.<br><br>To advocate raw food while
denying the difficulties and disadvantages is no more
than a confidence trick.<br><br>A 90 percent raw diet
is beneficial for a small number of people; more
fruit and vegetables in anybody's diet is beneficial; a
100 percent raw food diet without meat or fish or
eggs leads, over a two year period, to a slow but
steady decline, due to nutrient deficiency.<br><br>My
aim is a 90 percent raw food diet but I am not a
booster, confidence man or a salesman. And I don't think
that raw food is a replacement for religion or a
healthy spiritual life.<br><br>Changing to a raw food
diet is not for everyone; a genuine change of such
magnitude is long, profound and difficult; it does not
produce instant gratification.<br><br>Your culture adores
and promotes instant gratification. You are a true
daughter of your culture, and so you are telling us that
'you are a good girl'. We deserve better than
that.<br><br>Victor.

Dear Victor,<br><br>I am sorry I upset you, you
seem to be really angry. AND WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT MY
CULTURE? And who says I am a good girl? And I never said I
wasn't stressed, but eating what I eat (about 90% raw
food - no animal products) helped me cope a lot better
with all sorts of stresses, especially changing things
in my life that had to be changed.<br><br>It seems
to me that you are really having a hard time with
all that raw food, maybe you should stick to 'SAD',
it might not make you so angry...And I am no better
or worse than anyone else, just because I eat what I
eat.<br><br>Oh, by the way, I am glad you are not a booster,
confidence man or salesman, I like you so much better for
it.<br><br>Vela

Anger is a common by product of going to the raw
food diet in the initial stages.....i've experienced
it ,the chemical changes that occur in the body
often surface as irritation,or temper tantrums.Of
course the peace and peaceful nature are the end result
with clarity of mind,if you've ever been on a
fast...you know what i'm talking about,it makes it much
easier if you know what to expect on the roller coaster
ride of raw food....The world remains the same, its
only our filter which is being cleansed. One way to
keep on a level in the early going is to be aware of
when the drops in blood sugar occur,(around 1-3 pm)and
to eat something sweet such as a fruit or drink a
glass of carrot juice...(read Reams work for more)There
are no hard a fast rules, neither should there be
any!We are all unique and have unique capabilities, only
general guidelines should help us to keep a pulse on our
progress,if it doesn't suit you no matter what the experts
say,they are wrong!!Use your brain,study your past,chart
your future....<br><br>Peace

I sit here eating an apple and I love going down
to my fruit market with all kinds of fresh fruit
piled high.<br><br>I take another bite and I wonder: is
raw food good for you? Who is it good for? In what
circumstance? What is the evidence?<br><br>Are there any
longitudinal, in depth studies?<br><br>Why is it presented as a
moral good?<br><br>Why is the language of pop
psychology used to defend it?<br><br>How could you explain
it to an Aboriginal man or a Bangladeshi
woman?<br><br>Is it possible to express evidence against a raw
food diet? Is it even possible to express an opinion
against raw food?<br><br>I don't know the answers to
these questions, but I like to ask them as I cut open
my papaya* and fill it with banana and
passionfruit.<br><br>What do you think?<br><br>Victor.<br><br>*PS: we call
it paw paw. Do you prefer papaya or paw paw?

Mallon,<br><br>Board still running. I've just
been very quiet.<br><br>I'm back to 80% raw diet. I
lost about 35 pounds on 100% raw. I guess I didn't eat
enough nuts and avocadoes. I got so skinny it was
frightening!<br><br>So now I'm back to raw breakfast and lunch. Some
cooked food with some raw for dinner. No animal products
of any kind if I can help it. Keeping baked good to
a minimum.<br><br>I read that it is important to
have adequate complex carbohydrates like potatoes,
rice, pasta to give your body fuel to burn as heat.
100% raw dieters often have lower body

Mallon,<br><br>Yes, I do think I felt better at
100% raw but I just could not stand to loose any more
weight. <br><br>I'm trying to get regular exercise now--
power walking, biking, rebounder, weightlifting and
stretching.<br><br>My weight is slowly coming back up. Should be more
muscle this time. I'm being very focused on my health

seasonal fruit, especially the "exotic" mellons like
"santa claus" and "canary".<br><br>-OrionsDad

Victor,<br><br>The SAD IS ADDICTIVE!<br><br>That
is why it is so hard to go raw. Your body craves the
junk food it is use to getting and goes crazy when you
eliminate it from your diet. And by junk food I'm including
all animal products, sugars, salt and expecially
baked goods. <br><br>People mistakenly blame the raw
fruits and vegetables when they experience detox
symptoms. I hear it all the time from my friends and
associates. They will say they had a bad reaction to eating
just fruits and vegs and so they revert to their
normal SAD. They feel better and think I am crazy for
going raw. You have to have the knowledge and the will
to get over the detox period and keep your eye on
the prize. <br><br>From what I have read and
experienced your body will go through several detox periods
as you stay raw. Some symptoms can be very alarming.
But by eating raw and eliminating the junk you are
giving your body the necessary time and energy it needs
to detox. Detox is a GOOD thing. Welcome it and
enjoy it because when it is over you will feel better
and be healthier. You are also helping your body to
prevent future disease.<br><br>-OrionsDad

Dear OrionsDad,<br><br>I do think you are right:
animal products, salt, sugar and baked goods are
addictive.<br><br>And how extraordinary. Most people are food
addicts!<br><br>What would happen if most of us gave up our
addiction?<br><br>If we are basically good, we would create paradise
on earth. If we are basically bad, freeing us from
our addiction would free us to carry out evil as
never before.<br><br>In the Garden of Eden Adam and Eve
ate of the fruits of the trees; can we return to
Paradise? can we regain our innocence?<br><br>I bury my
nose in the fruit bowl; peaches caress my cheek;
avocado promises herself; and pineapple leads me to
heaven.<br><br>I remain, as always,<br>Your Intoxicated Victor.

Dear Victor,<br><br>I love your
sarcasm...<br><br>And people are addictive to all these things (sugar
etc.), that's why they can't give it up, and lots don't
want to, they rather get all sorts of diseases and
take pills.<br><br>And you are right, just because
someone eats fruit/raw foods doesn't make that person a
better person. So we probably might not have a paradise,
but it still would be a whole lot better than it is
now. <br><br>I think it couldn't get any worse, we
really stuffed up the environment for good, and there is
no turning back, it is too late for that, so maybe
we need a big comet or something to sort things
out?<br><br>Well, I am really very pessimistic...<br><br>Enjoy your
fruit, I enjoy mine.<br><br>Vela

Dear Vela,<br><br>I do enjoy my fruit and I enjoy
your messages.<br><br>In American eyes Australians do
have a deflating even destructive sense of humour. In
Australian eyes Americans have no sense of humour and think
they have the best sense of humour in the world. So we
are involved in cultural difference. This is
inevitable in a global medium.<br><br>So not only are we at
the cutting edge of healthy eating but also at the
cutting edge of communication. How we resolve both these
issues will affect more than you and me.<br><br>Just
think: your summer is my winter and my spring is your
autumn or fall; what delicious fruit and vegetables are
in season here are out of season there. So what is
in season in my culture is out of season in your
culture.<br><br>So I will share my fresh fruit and vegetable with
you, if you will share yours with me.<br><br>Victor.
