Subject: LAW: California Proposition 37, Labeling of products that contain GMO ingredients - INFORMATIONAL RESOURCES

Send Email Send Email

Hi everyone,

I posted briefly on this a day or two ago, and someone wrote back asking for
more informational resources. I very cleverly
"misplaced" that email, so I'm creating this post to share some additional
information with everyone. Hopefully, whoever wrote the
request is reading, :)

First, here is the official voter information guide:
http://voterguide.sos.ca.gov/propositions/37/.

Coincidentally, earlier today Natural News published a relevant piece entitled
"What exactly are GMOs and why should they be
labeled?"
Available at: http://www.naturalnews.com/037245_GMOs_labeling_GM_crops.html.

About 10 months ago, Natural News published another article entitled "Biotech's
dirty tricks exposed in new documentary: 'Scientists
Under Attack'.
Available at:
http://www.naturalnews.com/033804_Scientists_Under_Attack_GMOs.html.

Please take note of the various links provided in both articles and including
the sources listed at the end of each article.

The SeedsOfDeception website at https://seedsofdeception.com/ provides excellent
information, and of course the book by the same
title provides much more.

The Fooducate blog site now has an article entitled "37 Reasons to Vote for Prop
37 (Mandatory GMO Food Labels".
Available at:
https://blog.fooducate.com/2012/09/10/37-reasons-to-vote-for-prop-37-mandatory-g\
mo-food-labels/.

"Yes on 37" has a site at
https://blog.fooducate.com/2012/09/10/37-reasons-to-vote-for-prop-37-mandatory-g\
mo-food-labels/.

The Organic Consumers Association has numerous articles on GMOs, a few of which
contain enough information (as opposed to polemic)
to be worth reading. One such article is entitled "Scientist Jeopardizes Career
by Publishing Paper Criticizing GMOs".
Available at: <http://www.organicconsumers.org/articles/article_19468.cfm>
http://www.organicconsumers.org/articles/article_19468.cfm.

The Rense organization has published various articles. An example is one
entitled "The Amazing Revolving Door - Monsanto, FDA &
EPA".
Available at: <http://rense.com/general33/fd.htm>
http://rense.com/general33/fd.htm. Note that this one is about 10 years old, but
circumstances have only gotten worse since then (if that is even possible).

Quite a bit of information is available at the Ag BioTech InfoNet site,
http://www.biotech-info.net/, though you may have to look
around a bit.

Finally, a rather excellent article entitled "GE - US analysis - GE is not
extension of conventional plant breeding" is available at
http://www.gene.ch/info4action/2000/Feb/msg00028.html. You may wish to read this
last item first.

Hope this information is helpful!

   <http://organicconsumers.org/images/bytes/ronnie-new.jpeg> Dear Organic
Consumer,
We are entering the home stretch of the most important food policy fight in your
lifetime. Prop 37, the California Right to Know
Genetically Engineered Food Act, is a November 6 grassroots-powered, citizens'
ballot initiative that has huge implications for the
future of food in this country.
This is a battle that pits the people - you, me, moms, dads, rich, poor, young,
old - against fat-cat pesticide, biotech, and
junk-food corporations who for years have shamelessly manipulated science, the
political system, and the truth in order to rack up
obscene profits at the expense of your health and safety.
This is a battle that has nothing to do with partisan politics. National polls
show that 91% of Americans - republicans, democrats,
independents, libertarians - want GMOs labeled.
This is a battle that began on the ground in California and has caught fire,
garnering national and international media attention,
drawing donors and volunteers from all 50 states.
This is a battle that we must win . . . if we are ever going to have what
citizens in nearly 50 other countries already have: the
basic right to know if our food contains pesticide-injected, bacteria and
virus-laced genetically modified ingredients. Ingredients
that, according to a growing number of scientists, are making us sick with
everything from allergies and obesity, to cancer and
organ failure.
In a few short weeks, early voting begins in California. By Nov. 6, this battle
will have been won or lost.
If you eat food, this is your fight. If you haven't joined in, now is the time.
You take the risks, Monsanto gets the benefits
Would you knowingly feed your family foods that are linked to cancer and organ
failure? Absolutely not. Monsanto knows this.
Monsanto knows that the FDA has given it a free ride for more than 15 years,
allowing its bioengineers to concoct laboratory
experiments using you as their lab rat. Between 75% - 80% of all non-organic
processed foods contain GMOs. Unless those foods are
labeled, you are most likely a human lab rat in a vast genetic experiment.
You take all the risks, Monsanto gets all the benefits.
Scientists point to a growing body of evidence to support claims that GMOs are
linked to a host of health concerns. Why didn't we
know this 15 years ago? Because without labels, it's impossible to trace
specific health concerns to their food origins. The FDA
conducts no pre-market safety testing on GMO foods, instead relying on Monsanto,
DuPont, and Dow chemical to vouch for their safety.

Yes, believe it or not, the FDA allows the same companies that lied to us about
the safety of DDT, Agent Orange, PCBs and bovine
growth hormone to conduct their own dubious safety testing on GMOs, and then use
those tests as 'proof' that GMOs are safe.
If genetically modified foods are so safe, why is Big Ag afraid to label them?
If genetically engineered foods are safe, why are
biotech companies, food manufacturers, and supermarket chains spending millions
of dollars to deny you your right to know?
Prop 37 is our best hope - maybe our only chance
It's not a stretch to say that if we lose the GMO labeling battle in California,
we may never get another chance to force Big
Biotech and Big Food to come clean about what they are doing to the food that
you and I feed to our families. While some argue that
we should be focused on a national GMO labeling law, those in the know
understand that without this win in California, we don't
stand a snowball's chance in hell of passing a nationwide GMO labeling law.
In the past two years alone, more than 19 states have attempted to pass GMO
labeling legislation. Yet despite overwhelming
bipartisan public support, every one of those efforts has failed. Why? Because
powerful agribusiness lobbyists have corrupted the
political process.
A federal bill? Forget it. More than a million people signed a petition to the
FDA demanding it act on GMO labeling - more than any
other FDA petition in history - yet your guys and gals in Washington have failed
to act. As long as former Monsanto guns like Tom
Vilsack and Michael Taylor hold key government positions and powerful influence,
there will be no federal GMO labeling law.
As California goes, so goes the nation
Major food companies have already conceded that if we pass Prop 37 in
California, we may as well pass a national GMO labeling law.
If this law passes, food manufacturers will take GMOs out of their products,
rather than risk losing sales by slapping a label
proclaiming "This product contains GMOs" on every package. They admit that from
a production standpoint, it makes no sense to
reformulate only the products they sell in California, the eighth largest
economy in the world - they'll be forced to reformulate
all of their products for all US markets.
If this law passes, we'll finally see GMOs disappear from products in all 50
states, just as they've disappeared from foods in
nearly 50 other countries that already have mandatory GMO labeling laws.
The opposition knows what's at stake. That's why they've amassed a war chest of
more than $32 million - so far - to kill this
initiative. Monsanto alone has kicked in $7.2 million. DuPont and its
subsidiaries have dumped in $4.2 million, Dow and Bayer
CropScience $2 million each, and the Kings of Junk Food, Pepsi and Coca-Cola,
have contributed a combined $2.8 million. The biotech
and junk food processing industries are running scared because, finally, GMO
labeling is going to be decided by the people - not
politicians or industry lobbyists.
The battle for GMO labeling relies on you
The Organic Consumers Association and our allied lobbying organization, the
Organic Consumers Fund, have been a key player in Prop
37 from the very beginning, spending countless hours, serving on the campaign's
steering committee, and raising funds. OCF has
pledged $1 million - money we've raised from people like you who are outraged
that our elected officials have ignored pleas from the
overwhelming majority of their constituents to require mandatory labeling of
GMOs.
Today, I ask for your continued support in this monumental David-versus-Goliath
fight for what ought to be a guaranteed, basic right
- a right we've been denied for far too long. The more money the opposition
throws at this fight, the more obvious it is that for
the first time ever, they believe their science experiments and huge profits -
at your expense - may be at risk.
The polls show us leading in California, despite being behind in terms of
raising money. But money alone won't win this battle. It
will take a herculean effort by tens of thousands of volunteers to overcome the
opposition's massive advertising campaign, a
campaign of lies meant to frighten and intimidate voters into thinking a few
extra words on a label will somehow be more dangerous
than being a lab rat for Monsanto.
If you haven't already,
<http://capwiz.com/grassrootsnetroots/utr/1/ICEZSCWCLQ/CTKASCXKZQ/8716660691>
please pitch in today using
our secure online donation system, by sending a check, or by calling our office
to help with the ongoing mobilization of volunteers,
printing of leaflets and signs, and outreach to the media to keep this issue at
the forefront of voters' minds.
If you have already donated all you can, please reach out to your friends.
Forward this letter. Share it on Facebook and Twitter.
If we win this battle in California, we win it for all of us. If we lose?
Monsanto will grow larger, more powerful, more arrogant,
more dangerous. And the quality of your food - and most likely your health -
will deteriorate.
This is your fight. And time is running out. Thank you!
Organically yours,
For an Organic Future,

Director, Organic Consumers Association and Organic Consumers Fund
P.S. Every dollar you contribute to this campaign will go toward supporting Prop
37 in California. We need to get materials out to
the field, and we need to get voters to the polls. Early voting begins Oct. 9!

Keeping a garden hose looking decent within one's yard can be a bit challenging.
Recently, I came upon expandable hoses, a product
category of which I we previously unaware, and I thought it might interest some
people in these groups.

To keep it brief, I'll just provide a few links, you can do the rest! There are
probably more, but I leave that to you, as well. If
anyone tries one of these contraptions, please share with the rest of us!

Hi Elchanan! This sounded great, but my husband has been concerned about lead
in flexible hoses, so I called the phone number on
the website. The salesperson had no idea about lead, she sent me to customer
service, and that gal had no idea either. Supposedly,
they'll research it and call me back, but the fact that this information isn't
readily available does not give me much confidence
that this hose is lead-free.

I have accumulated a number of holiday recipes, and interesting links.
Additionally, I have added my own recipes (please search on vegetables or
type of preparation, i.e., dehydration, etc.). My recent fascination is
cultured vegetables, so you can find ways to ferment/culture vegetables.

Subject: CAN THIS LIST BE REVIVED? I'D LIKE TO TRY
prettysmarti...

Oh, dear! This list looks like a ghost town. Time was, it was very very active.
That was before... well, before. If you look back to the beginning of the list,
there was a lot of good info.

I know because, even when it was active, I looked back at the early posts, and
archived most of them in the FILES section (back when I still had the email
MANIFESTNOW).

If you are reading this, and have never looked through the FILES, you should.
(Unfortunately, there is a lot of spam in there now, since the list owner and I
went away) If you look for the files posted by MANIFESTNOW, you will find a
wealth of
* tasty recipes
* raw food-related discussions
* natural health care recipes and suggestions

and more.....

It's a good place to check out whether you are a raw food beginner or a very
experienced raw foodist (when I joined the list, I had already been into raw
food for 25 years, but I still learned a lot through my reading of the files
and, also, more importantly, through interaction with other list members.

I currently have my own raw vegan blog
(http://prettysmartrawfoodideas.wordpress.com)
but there is nothing like active discussion on a mailing list.S

So, I am going to see if this list can be revived. I'd like to again the
feeling of community as well as the creative stimulation that you can get from a
mailing list.

So, for a while, you will notice posts from me: things from the files,
cross-posts from my blog, or cool blogs and websites I've seen as I revisit the
links on my blog to see who is still in business and offering new ideas.

I hope you will join me.

If you are wondering about the differences between different appliances you

Human Genes Engineered Into Experimental GMO Rice Grown in Kansas

Unless the rice you buy is certified organic, or comes specifically from a farm
that tests its rice crops for genetically modified
(GM) traits, you could be eating rice tainted with actual human genes. The only
known GMO with inbred human traits in cultivation
today, a GM rice product made by biotechnology company Ventria Bioscience is
currently being grown on 3,200 acres in Junction City,
Kansas - and possibly elsewhere - and most people have no idea about it.

Since about 2006, Ventria has been quietly cultivating rice that has been
genetically modified (GM) with genes from the human liver
for the purpose of taking the artificial proteins produced by this "Frankenrice"
and using them in pharmaceuticals. With approval
from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Ventria has taken one of the
most widely cultivated grain crops in the world today,
and essentially turned it into a catalyst for producing new drugs.

It is really nice to worry about what other people are doing, but, as raw
foodists, about the only rice we might find a use for is wild rice which can be
"sprouted" (soaked and used - sort of raw.. some raw food chefs call for it, but
it is not a common inclusion in a raw food diet)

One of the reasons I stay raw is that I don't want the weird stuff that goes
into grains anymore.

I think it would be much more productive to discuss, for example, hybrid
vegetables, and their place, for example, in the raw vegan diet (I think not).

Our focus, (if we are going to be worried about things other than what to eat
tonight) I believe, should be on the problems facing organic vegetable and fruit
farms, and their issues -- many organic farms choose to not seek certification
because of the high cost of the certification, thus necessitating that we, as
consumers, must ask, at every farm store, or every vendor in a green market,
whether they are organic (secret password and all). The politicization of
organics has actually created an oppression of organic farmers, instead of
making us sure of what we are receiving at a reasonable price.

If we want to further the idea of an increased amount of raw living foods in
one's diet, shouldn't we be discussing those issues on this list, rather than
discussing what other people are eating?? I don't think scare tactics will work
until you've interested people in the alternatives.

This is, and has always been a venue for the discussion of raw vegan foods. As
such, we should be discussing issues that affect raw vegans directly. (How
about "recipes", for example, or ways to deal with people who ask weird
questions when they see what we are eating, or, even, if you must missionize,
how to show other people your food and how good it is -- I think the problem
there is that people in your workplace lunchroom don't necessarily *want* to
share your food, and they, for sure, don't want you to eat their food)

It is all well and good to get up in arms about politics and other foodways
issues, but there are dedicated venues for such things (if you are worried about
rice, you can go to the vegan and vegetarian lists, as well as the paleo lists,
or else, to lists which discuss weird things they are doing to food that most
people buy in supermarkets)

Raw foodists have very specific issues which should keep us well occupied
without worrying about other diets' issues. Our concerns run to organic produce
or not, prosecution of raw parents who feed their children a raw diet, ways to
maintain and survive on a raw diet (including frugality). We have more than
enough "on our plate" without spending our time thinking about what other people
choose to put on their plates (missionizing is not a subject I like to deal
with: I find that you simply cannot wear down your friends and family, and you
cannot beat them into submission, when it comes to raw food. If, by your
healthy lifestyle, you show them something that they are willing to accept, you
will win them. This is the same way Christian missionaries work with the people
they *hope* to convert)

Subject: DILLY BEANS - cultured/fermented raw green beans
prettysmarti...
Send Email Send Email

I am very into "culturing" vegetables - some people buy yogurt with probiotics,
others down capsules with probiotics, but I like to *eat* my probiotics with my
meals.

Even though it is winter, I've seen green beans in markets and the DILLY BEANS
I've made have always been popular gifts for friends and neighbors -- not to
mention that I love them.

DILLY BEANS â€"CULTURED RAW GREEN BEANS
(loosely based on a recipe from Sandor Katz’s Wild Fermentation)

1 lb green beans
1/2 to 1 whole jalapeno pepper (according to taste)
1 T dill seed (not dill weed)
2 cloves garlic (or more, to taste)
1 C spring water
1 T sea salt
1 capsule probiotics (I use New Chapter Probiotic All-Flora)

Use 1 qt jar (but have a 1 pt jar on hand in case your beans don’t all fit in
the 1 qt jar) Thoroughly wash and rinse the jar(s). (If you are really
finicky, you can soak the jars in water with chlorine bleach added, or else boil
them â€" if you boil the jars, cool them to room temperature before you use
themâ€"I, personally, did this the once I lost a batch of sauerkraut, and I
wanted to be sure no mold was in the jar)

Top and tail your green beans, and then break them off (or cut them) in lengths
to fit the jar(s) - (since we don’t know exactly how many will go in which
jar, you can measure for the first jar and fill it, then re-measure, and also
use the odd pieces left over for the second jar if you need it).

Slice the garlic cloves into three pieces.

Finely chop the jalapeno pepper.

Place the garlic slices, chopped jalapeno, and dill seed in the bottom of the
quart jar.

Pack the green beans into the quart jar. Leave 1/2 in. space at the top of the
jar.

Mix the sea salt thoroughly into 1/2 C spring water. Empty the powder from the
probiotics capsule into the water. Mix thoroughly.

Pour the brine with probiotics mix into the jar, to completely cover the beans.

Cover the jars with two part “dome” lids (the ones they come with) and screw
lids on tightly. (if, for some reason, you are using plastic storage lids on
your Ball jars, or if you are using re-purposed glass jars you’ve saved, and
are using the lids those jars came with, leave the lids a little loose)

Set your jars in a cool dark-ish place in your kitchen (my spot is the corner of
my stove next to the wall (the window is just ahead of this spot, but doesn’t
shine on it) I have a cutting board which covers that part of the stove,
designating my fermenting zone.

Wait 3 days (the probiotics accelerate the fermentation process). I usually
look at the beans and shake up the jar a little (superstition, maybe, but I have
the idea that it will make the spices go into the beans better)

After 3 days, taste a green bean and decide if you like the taste. If you do,
there you go. If you are not sure, leave them another 2 days, and then taste
test. I have never left my beans more than 5 days, but you could, if you
choose. 3 days is enough for me, then, after I get the “first fruits”, I
close the jar back up tight and leave it on the counter for another couple of
days (no room in the refrigerator). If I haven’t finished off the green beans
by then, I transfer them to a smaller container and put them in the
refrigerator.

MARINATED DEHYDRATED MUSHROOMS
20 baby bella mushrooms, sliced 1/2 inch thick
3 T extra virgin olive oil
1 small jalapeno, finely minced
1 T garlic powder
1 t tamari (all of the recipes I saw called for much more, but I don't much care
for salt)
2 T lemon juice

Place mushroom slices in a large bowl.
Blend remaining ingredients, then pour over mushrooms in bowl.
With your hands, toss the mushrooms around with the oil mix until all pieces are
well coated.
Spread mushroom slices one layer thick on teflex covered dehydrator tray (you
could put them directly on the plastic screen, but the teflex is a lot easier to
clean up)
Dehydrate for 4-6 hours

I was planning to dehydrated these mushrooms to a jerky consistency, but, after
about 4 hours, I tasted them, and turned around and gobbled up about half of
them. I decided I should put them in a container in the refrigerator at that
point. (Later, when I called Mom to wish her Happy New Year, and I told her
about all of the mushrooms, she asked if they tasted like sautéed mushrooms – it
has been so long since I have eaten cooked things, I had to think hard – yes,
these dehydrated mushrooms taste like well-sauteed mushrooms!) I liked them so
much that I sliced up 2 portobellas, cut them into 1-1/2 inch pieces, marinated
them, put them right into the dehydrator, so I can have more of these delicious
mushrooms.

Hello, whoever you are. (It would be nice if you would sign your posts. :)

Thank you for your extensive response.

First, and as you plainly point out in your opening paragraph, some raw foodists
do like to sprout grains. I don't. You don't. But
some do. For them, this topic, in its narrowest sense, is likely of interest. I
would choose to include these people in our
conversations, and I imagine they would like to know about something like this.

Second and by way of contrast, I see that earlier today, you shared a couple of
posts about fermenting vegetables. Again, some raw
foodists eat these, and many more do not. Shall we cut off conversation about
this subject matter, even though it is of interest to
you and to some others, simply because it is not of interest to everyone?

Hopefully we will do the opposite, namely, encourage such conversation.

Third, and far more importantly, my original post, restored below, points toward
the heart of the entire food/nutrition
infrastructure, and I therefore find it of great interest and suspect that some
others may, as well.

The integration of material taken from the HUMAN genome into the HUMAN food
supply indicates a significant step in a very
destructive direction. You see, it's one thing to manipulate genomes, in
general, that's bad enough. It's quite another thing to
take elements from a given species' genome, integrate those elements into that
species' own food supply, then feed that food supply
back to that species. Wherever this has been done-as with cattle-rather horrible
results have ensued.

Like it or not, we all live in a world in which everything and everyone is
interconnected. What these people do affects us all, no
matter how comforting it may feel to curl up behind a bowl of whatever one's
favorite food(s) may be. So from my perspective, this
is necessary information for all of us, or at least for those among us who feel
interested enough to absorb it and to follow it
further.

Make sense?

Greetings everyone,

My partner and I are traveling to the Las Vegas area this Thursday. We'll be
staying about an hour from Vegas. However, on Thursday
we arrive early enough to spend some time driving around and shopping. We would
be grateful for input on:

1. Where to shop for organic or reasonable quality produce on Thursday,
specifically. We will be working in a very dry area, so we
are particularly interested in watermelons. Right now, here in California, we
are getting lots of those little watermelons at Trader
Joe's and at Whole Foods (though these are not organic). We are also interested
in organic bananas, organic celery, organic carrots,
organic lettuce, organic tomatoes (we do get those here all year-round), etc.

2. Where to buy some clean water. Distilled or RO or the like is fine. We will
bring empty jugs, we need a place where we can fill
them.

3. If there were ONE thing we should see or do on Thursday before we drive out
to our final destination, what would you suggest?
(This is for FUN, of course. :):)

Thank you all kindly.

Just FYI, I'm leaving in about 2 hours and will be off the Internet until
sometime Tuesday. But I will receive any and all
suggestions and ideas you send . and we will be most grateful!!!

Thank you kindly,
Elchanan

*** This is a monthly reminder to all members ***

Please trim your posts:

This means to delete any other post in your email message besides your own.
People who are getting the Daily Digest will have to constantly read through
these super long emails, with all the information being constantly repeated.

So please check your message and make sure you only include relevant content to
the group. You can have parts of previous messages if that helps to make your
point.

Anyone who continually leaves these untrimmed posts will be put on moderation.
Posts that are on moderation that aren't trimmed, will be deleted.

Thank you for your help, Roger Haeske
