Thanks for the raw nut sprouting tip!  Only problem is that I live in a city and
all the raw nuts for sale even in the farmer's markets have already been shelled
:(  I guess now I'll have to order online somewhere.

here's a tip for sprouting nuts this winter. i first experienced this technique
by accident. i was camping near a small desert stream, and noticed that my
indian nuts had fallen by the water for few days. i opened them to discover that
they had started sprouting in the shell. they were so good, that now i continue
to do it that way. i usually have a batch of pecans in the shell soaking at my
winter home. i would describe it in poetic detail, but it's worth making the
discovers on your own. all i'll say now is: they continue to get better for
weeks and don't keep them too cold or they won't sprout.

(btw, i dug a deep hole [with my toilet] near the weak stream and diverted
enough water for a great bath in the hot sun)

incidentally, rumor has it, that squirrels bury their nuts. they don't remember
exactly where, but when the nuts start sprouting, they can smell them - and then
dig up the newfood. they don't find all of them, therefore leaving some to grow
into trees. if you find any squirrels, they love sprouted nuts. but be careful
feeding them, they have very sharp claws.

i would have posted this earlier in the season; but i think you've been punished
long enough.

also, i love the absence of replies on this list. keep up the good work. i find
the experience... Exquisite, absolutelyjr

The legal system in the United States is wrong.
The criminals are victims.
Their victims are equally responsible.
I realized it in a moment. An epiphany moment:

Moab finds me camping alone in the desert for over a week
having to leave [suddenly] the next day
tonight burns the last campfire, dwarfed by the moon and stars
the enormous Wash is tactile in its perfection

no more need for surplus food, there is plenty to spare
the first desert mouse appears, to steal a sprouted almond
and then another and another
I move the almonds closer to me
the mice become bolder.
one at a time, I put out a new almond still nearer
a mouse runs out to snatch it, then quickly escapes
Now I hold out an almond between extended fingers
a hero finally strolls up to me and grabs the almond
Wearing a head lamp, such that when I suddenly turn to face him,
the light shines thru him and we both freeze.
staring at each other for eternity,
the fear is unanticipated
I recover first and shake the almond in a gesture to give it to him
he recovers, pulls the almond and runs away
now all the mice see that they will have to take the almond from me
no more isolated almonds to pillage, they have to deal
not all the mice are comfortable with that
the first hero isn't scared of me anymore,
but some of his friends still are
I hand the hero another almond
as he is making his getaway
another mouse attacks him,
attempting to take possession of the almond
the almond that I have given him - My almond
the hero is my friend, I am on his side
hating the thief
I shout 'ey! while they still struggle
the shout is very powerful, because the desert is so quiet
(also, I hadn't said anything in a week.)
The world stops for a split second, then all of the mice scurry
I want to punish the mouse thief
and to protect the mouse hero
I am god - I supply the food, I am all powerful. I mete out justice.

that's when I get the epiphany

there aren't bad mice and good mice
not in an absolute sense
maybe some mice are more likable than others
but in the final analysis, I don't want to punish any mouse
all I want to do is to have everyone get along so we can have fun, live life,
love, learn, and grow
sure I consider making the mouse thief wear a sign with a red star,
or lashing him with a cat o' nine, or jailing him in a hole
or cutting off one of his paws,
but I realize that would be wrong.

I am god, and they are as my children:
the bad mouse, the good mouse, the sick mouse, the little mouse, the ugly mouse
I love them all
it is not my desire to punish any mouse
it is my desire to protect all of them [each and every one]
let me extrapolate the epiphany to American justice (sic)

Jail is not to punish one man, it is to protect all men
sometimes, jail may be the most humane choice
for example

lets say that a man, john, kills a woman, Mary
well, it is possible that Marys people will want revenge
they might naturally respond by murdering john
but god still loves john, and still wants everyone to be happy
so until we get a better idea,
put john in jail, so that no one can harm him
sometimes it takes years until people can forgive or tolerate again
even if john continues to kill people
god still loves him and still does not want him to suffer
it might be necessary to restrain john further
but at no time, does god sanction the torture of john

jail does not legitimize torture
any more than war legitimizes murder

The American legal system is just another excuse
to permit one sadist an oppotunity to torture another victim
whether it be the politicians who profit by it
the sick humans who revel in it
or the injured party who demands it

The victims of crimes in America
are equally responsible for their misfortunes,
because they support the loss of freedom in America,
and therefore the use of torture.
When I hear that a junkie robbed a little old lady,
I doubt she will understand that
her support for the current suspensions of privacy
has mandated this response.

And to further extrapolate,
I wonder if she realizes that the war in Afghanistan, against people who hate us
for no good reason, will now give them the best reasons.

No, I don't think she ever will.

Dave the Raw Food Trucker just gave me a call and apprized me of a
situation with one of our fellow raw foodists, Elaina Love. Elaina is
a wonderful raw food chef. I've known her for many years; since the
early International Raw & Living Foods Festivals in Oregon.
Apparently, her son is quite ill and she has taken him to Hippocrates
Health Institute. The trip is to save his life and is quite expensive.
She needs some help. I plan to donate and hope you'll consider doing
the same.

Thanks,

Jeff Rogers

This is from Elaina's website:

Donations for Dominic's healing at Hippocrates Health Institute

My son Dominic was diagnosed with leukemia on Jan. 15, 2009. He
underwent the traditional cancer treatment of chemo and radiation and
bone marrow transplant, and the leukemia has recently come back
aggresively. There is nothing more to do in the medical arena. So...I
am taking Dominic to Hippocrates Health Institute in Florida for 3
weeks beginning on Sunday November 29th where he will eat a completely
green, raw, vegan diet of juices and greens, get daily wheatgrass
implants and oxygen therapy. I have so much faith in this way of
allowing the body to heal itself that I know it will work. I will be
there with him through it all.

The therapy and airfare combined are going to be close to $20,000 and
that's just for the first 3 weeks.

Any help you can send us would be so great. Even $5. Feel free to
"purchase" as many $5 donations as you are comfortable with. The
gratitude I feel for you as I write this, even though I don't know who
you are yet, is so huge I want to cry.

My teen son says the "Go Raw" chocolate granola isn't as chocolatey as the raw
cereal he used to eat. For the life of me, I can't figure out what cereal he is
referring to. Maybe I ordered something awhile back and have forgotten..

Anyone know of another raw chocolate granola produt out there?

Hi everyone,

I don't typically pay much attention to drug reaction stuff, there's just
too much of such info for me to keep track of. But this particular drug's
effect is immediate, devastating, and may be permanent.

This is not the only case like this that I've come across, merely the best
articulated. Please share widely.

Best,

PLEASE READ THIS -I personally know the lady that sent this, she knows this
gal.

I want my friends and loved ones to know what has happened to me in hopes
that it will never happen to you or anybody you care about.

About 10 days ago I felt a cold coming on so before I went to bed I used
Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Gel. It's supposed to help you "get over your cold
faster". Immediately after I sprayed it into each nostril I felt the most
horrific burning sensation imaginable. It literally felt like I had sprayed
pepper spray directly into my brain. It burned all the way to the top of my
skull. My nasal passages swelled, my eyes watered - the burning lasted all
night long into the next day.

After about a day I realized I couldn't taste anything and I thought "Wow -
I must really have a bad cold". Then I noticed that I couldn't smell coffee
brewing, couldn't smell my perfume when I put it on, couldn't smell the
popcorn I burned, couldn't smell my favorite candle. I panicked and starting
smelling everything that I could find that had really strong odors -
ammonia, finger nail polish remover, bleach, etc. I couldn't smell ANYTHING!

I started tasting everything that had really strong tastes such as HOT
salsa, raw red onions, Doritos, coffee. I couldn't taste ANYTHING!

I told my mother about this and she said "Oh I've heard Zicam can affect
your Olfactory nerve".

I went online, typed in "Zicam side effects" and bam - up popped all sorts
of web sites with people reporting the same thing I experienced. It seems
that this past June, Zicam pulled the swabs for adults and children off the
shelf but not the nasal gel.

I went to my ENT and he said the Zicam had basically "FRIED" my Olfactory
nerve and the results are most likely permanent. He put me in a strong dose
of a steroid called Prednisone in hopes of recovering ANY bit of the nerve
damage but he told me to "take this and pray". He said he had read about the
side effects of Zicam and couldn't believe it is still on the shelf. It
isn't FDA approved.

I am taking the Prednisone and praying but nothing is happening. I
LITERALLY CANNOT SMELL OR TASTE ANYTHING! I can tell if foods are hot or
cold, I can tell the consistency and I can faintly detect if it is salty but
that is it.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE pass this on to everyone you care about. I don't want
this to happen to ANYONE else!!!!!!!!!! and if you have Zicam in your
medicine cabinet THROW IT AWAY!

Green tea has a lot of benefits. Schiff Green tea diet is quite well known as a healthy diet through green tea supplements because of its health contains material and certain labels that is contains with plenty useful ingredients in reducing weight easily. The exited study on weight loss shown ages that would be able to safely consume the existed supplements are around 21 to 65.

If the weight of a person is 70 kg while 45 kg is the equivalent to approximately 3500 calories and he needs to reduce his 45 kg fat, he should take a practice or diet. He cannot only drink 5 cups of green tea to reduce his fat because green tea only gives a little help to reduce his fat by burning 70 calories in a day while his fat is 3500 calories. So when you really want to lose your weight in short time, do not only take several cups of green tea because surely it will take months. Better you go out and do some sports outside.

dear left wing raw fooders, right wing raw fooders, progressive raw fooders,
bagdad sex perverts, and especially those of us that have been twice around the
block -

sure it can be best not to mix foods, but hey, gimme a break. life is killing
me.

I have been having some really delicious salads lately. I want to write a recipe
and take pictures, but I am not going to. Mainly because it's a stupid thing to
do. The ingredients of a salad are made with a combination of what's available
and what tastes good. I could say the baby romaine lettuce is best for the
salad, but when I am tasting the lettuce before buying, sometimes I pick red
leaf or butter lettuce. Sometimes I get little round cherry tomatoes if the big
red ones aren't ripe. Sometimes I add onion, or scallions, but once in a while I
can get sprouted garlic. Yeah, I can take pictures, but it wouldn't really be of
practical use to others, since the salad is a personal and resource determined
project. Sometimes I put grated beets for sweetness, or grated ginger for zip.
Sometimes, if I can't get a ripe avocado, I use olive oil. Sometimes, I am
really bad and use a few tablespoons of braggs cider vinegar.

There is one ingredient of the salad that I am using lately that really makes
the difference. Young white corn on the cob. (or white and yellow) It works for
me. This is how I prepare the corn before adding to the salad.
1. Shuck it
2. Brush to remove stray hairs
3. Use a very sharp slicing knife to cut off the kernels. Don't cut too
close to the cob, infact, leave extra on the cob. If the knife is sharp enough,
you can cut the kernels with successive one saw down motions. This is best so as
not to make a mess of the kitchen with flying corn kernels. Balance the corn on
the sharp end, and tilt down a little to the cutting board, to also minimize
flying kernels
4. Use the back of a chef's knife (the spine) to scrape off the rest of
the corn residue. This is the crčme of the cob. It really gives the salad great
flavor. This is the funnest part.
5. Put it in the oven and bake at 450 degrees for 35 minutes. (only
kidding)

The corn is not in season all year, so I am eating a lot now while it is
available and I like it

Here are some extra tips for salads
1. An old rule of thumb is to make sure there are three colors in the
salad: like green lettuce, yellow corn, and red bell pepper
2. A salad should have a uniform range of sizes. So that if corn is a
dominate ingredient, then cut the bell peppers into small cubes also. And cut
the romaine into small pieces also
3. Its not necessary to use a blender for the salad dressing. I just
squeeze the avocado threw my fingers, grate the beets and ginger, and squeeze
the large tomatoes before tossing all by hand. There is no blender to clean or
electricity to worry about. I do use a blender sometimes, and it is good too,
but I prefer it this way today
4. If you have avocado, you really shouldn't need any oil

Here are some extra thoughts on corn

Corn kernels are seeds. Like nuts and other seeds, they are the first stage of
life for the new plant. Most nuts and seeds need to be sprouted first because
they have high starch content and huge protein molecules. While this is optimal
for the new life, it can be one of the worst periods in their life cycle for
human digestion. Most nuts and seeds are better sprouted first. Corn is the big
exception. It is best eaten fresh from the cob. (You can sprout the corn, they
say, after drying and then rehydrating it.)

I could be wrong about my facts, I am just ranting, but one thing is for sure, I
am planning to enjoy my corn salad now.

your cyber chef
jrellis, firepriest

ps - corn can be abused in cooked food diets. it is one of the wonders of
nature. Like cotton candy, fluffy egg souffle, cheese fondue, and leavened wheat
bread, the slave cultures of the world have manipulated sacred fire to create
popcorn. don't you sometimes wish these abominations of nature were naturally
occurring and good for you. and to requote severen schaeffer again, "the
question is not, 'can man live by bread alone?' but 'can man live by bread at
all?' "

pps - summer is almost over, so its the worst time not to take advantage of the
abundance of fruit.

The Whole Foods Alternative to ObamaCare

Eight things we can do to improve health care without adding to the deficit

By John Mackey

"The problem with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people's
money."
    - Margaret Thatcher

   _____

With a projected $1.8 trillion deficit for 2009, several trillions more in
deficits projected over the next decade, and with both Medicare and Social
Security entitlement spending about to ratchet up several notches over the
next 15 years as Baby Boomers become eligible for both, we are rapidly
running out of other people's money. These deficits are simply not
sustainable. They are either going to result in unprecedented new taxes and
inflation, or they will bankrupt us.

While we clearly need health-care reform, the last thing our country needs
is a massive new health-care entitlement that will create hundreds of
billions of dollars of new unfunded deficits and move us much closer to a
government takeover of our health-care system. Instead, we should be trying
to achieve reforms by moving in the opposite direction--toward less
government control and more individual empowerment. Here are eight reforms
that would greatly lower the cost of health care for everyone

1. Remove the legal obstacles that slow the creation of high-deductible
health insurance plans and health savings accounts (HSAs). The combination
of high-deductible health insurance and HSAs is one solution that could
solve many of our health-care problems. For example, Whole Foods Market pays
100% of the premiums for all our team members who work 30 hours or more per
week (about 89% of all team members) for our high-deductible
health-insurance plan. We also provide up to $1,800 per year in additional
health-care dollars through deposits into employees' Personal Wellness
Accounts to spend as they choose on their own health and wellness.

Money not spent in one year rolls over to the next and grows over time. Our
team members therefore spend their own health-care dollars until the annual
deductible is covered (about $2,500) and the insurance plan kicks in. This
creates incentives to spend the first $2,500 more carefully. Our plan's
costs are much lower than typical health insurance, while providing a very
high degree of worker satisfaction.

2. Equalize the tax laws so that employer-provided health insurance and
individually owned health insurance have the same tax benefits. Now employer
health insurance benefits are fully tax deductible, but individual health
insurance is not. This is unfair.

3. Repeal all state laws which prevent insurance companies from competing
across state lines. We should all have the legal right to purchase health
insurance from any insurance company in any state and we should be able use
that insurance wherever we live. Health insurance should be portable.

4. Repeal government mandates regarding what insurance companies must cover.
These mandates have increased the cost of health insurance by billions of
dollars. What is insured and what is not insured should be determined by
individual customer preferences and not through special-interest lobbying.

5. Enact tort reform to end the ruinous lawsuits that force doctors to pay
insurance costs of hundreds of thousands of dollars per year. These costs
are passed back to us through much higher prices for health care.

6. Make costs transparent so that consumers understand what health-care
treatments cost. How many people know the total cost of their last doctor's
visit and how that total breaks down? What other goods or services do we buy
without knowing how much they will cost us?

7. Enact Medicare reform. We need to face up to the actuarial fact that
Medicare is heading towards bankruptcy and enact reforms that create greater
patient empowerment, choice and responsibility.

8. Finally, revise tax forms to make it easier for individuals to make a
voluntary, tax-deductible donation to help the millions of people who have
no insurance and aren't covered by Medicare, Medicaid or the State
Children's Health Insurance Program.

Many promoters of health-care reform believe that people have an intrinsic
ethical right to health care--to equal access to doctors, medicines and
hospitals. While all of us empathize with those who are sick, how can we say
that all people have more of an intrinsic right to health care than they
have to food or shelter?

Health care is a service that we all need, but just like food and shelter it
is best provided through voluntary and mutually beneficial market exchanges.
A careful reading of both the Declaration of Independence and the
Constitution will not reveal any intrinsic right to health care, food or
shelter. That's because there isn't any. This "right" has never existed in
America

Even in countries like Canada and the U.K., there is no intrinsic right to
health care. Rather, citizens in these countries are told by government
bureaucrats what health-care treatments they are eligible to receive and
when they can receive them. All countries with socialized medicine ration
health care by forcing their citizens to wait in lines to receive scarce
treatments.

Although Canada has a population smaller than California, 830,000 Canadians
are currently waiting to be admitted to a hospital or to get treatment,
according to a report last month in Investor's Business Daily. In England,
the waiting list is 1.8 million.

At Whole Foods we allow our team members to vote on what benefits they most
want the company to fund. Our Canadian and British employees express their
benefit preferences very clearly-they want supplemental health-care dollars
that they can control and spend themselves without permission from their
governments. Why would they want such additional health-care benefit dollars
if they already have an "intrinsic right to health care"? The answer is
clear-no such right truly exists in either Canada or the U.K.-or in any
other country.

Rather than increase government spending and control, we need to address the
root causes of poor health. This begins with the realization that every
American adult is responsible for his or her own health.

Unfortunately many of our health-care problems are self-inflicted:
two-thirds of Americans are now overweight and one-third are obese. Most of
the diseases that kill us and account for about 70% of all health-care
spending-heart disease, cancer, stroke, diabetes and obesity-are mostly
preventable through proper diet, exercise, not smoking, minimal alcohol
consumption and other healthy lifestyle choices.

Recent scientific and medical evidence shows that a diet consisting of foods
that are plant-based, nutrient dense and low-fat will help prevent and often
reverse most degenerative diseases that kill us and are expensive to treat.
We should be able to live largely disease-free lives until we are well into
our 90s and even past 100 years of age.

Health-care reform is very important. Whatever reforms are enacted it is
essential that they be financially responsible, and that we have the freedom
to choose doctors and the health-care services that best suit our own unique
set of lifestyle choices. We are all responsible for our own lives and our
own health. We should take that responsibility very seriously and use our
freedom to make wise lifestyle choices that will protect our health. Doing
so will enrich our lives and will help create a vibrant and sustainable
American society.

many years ago i read john robins book on the american diet and became a
vegetarian
then i read ann wigmores book on hippocrates diet and became a raw fooder
then i read severn schaeffers book on instinctive nutrion and became one too
then i made headway on my own
i became honest.
instinctive nutrition is just one part of being honest
although it hightlights the most significant and common obstacle

the problem with doctors today is that there is no competition
it is not the american way, or at least not the old american way
the new american way allows the government to violate our most sacred
communications
thus they are able to maintain the monopoly by the ama, pharms, hmos, etc
such that the price of health care is beyond everyone

the solution is not government subsidized health care
the solution is getting the government out of our private lives

for those that don't understand that
it is too late
it is already war
come get me
i am already after you
and yours

how aburd is this
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/8180116.stm
they convinced the man of murdering his own daughter

If anyone here is interested, I have extra milk kefir grains that enhances the
benefits of milk. It basically ferments the milk in a healthy way. If you have
raw milk you are very lucky. If you can use milk kefir grains to make your own
probiotic drink then that is double awesome.
If anyone is interested just let me know. If the owner of the group is against
my post, just say so and I wont do this again.

I just thought that someone might benefit. I am giving them away but request
that shipping expenses are paid.

Oops...I meant to post about the raw food potluck to our local raw group. Sorry
about that folks.

While I'm here, someone mentioned that you can make raw noodles (such as
zucchini or young coconut) taste better by using salt and oil. Any specifics or
thoughts on this? I have a spiralizer that I have used to make noodles (squash
as well) and I am not real thrilled with the taste despite the yummy sauces.
They taste so much better in the raw food restaurants.

Hi everyone,

I am hosting a raw food/vegan potluck at my home on August 15 at 4:00 p.m. A
friend asked me to host the vegan potluck this month (and we have some things
going on in August) so I decided to combine the 2 potlucks. I hope to see alot
of you and please try to remember to bring the recipe for your dish.

Directions are as follows: Take Gary Lane north like you are headed to Hidden
Springs. Turn Left on Hill Road (this is right past the Hill Road Parkway,
which is the newer Hill Road). There is a canal on the right side. We are the
3rd house on the Left. Address is 8329 Hill Road and we have a turret.

Best to everyone and I hope you're enjoying the summer~Beth
