i checked the trunking and there is no receive only...there is a conventional
scan only...there is no trunking scan..i think if you put the frequency in the
conventional you should receive trucking ..i have not tryed it but i have heard
that it works...

is that for a trunked personality?

I believe that even with receive only checked for a trunked
personality, the radio will still auto affiliate with the system to
get the control channel information.

XTL5000 CANNOT be setup to NOT auto affiliate with a system,
regardless of whether a mic is attached or not.

Again...It is not possible.

Astro Spectras can be made to do so via a software setting in CPS/RSS.

I know its been covered (probably) but I got a simple question.
can a 800mhz xtl5000 with a w9 control head be programmned to act like a scanner
on a trunked system. I do not want to transmitt on it just receive. I know I can
get the cable and cps but if its a total lost cause then I wont even try.
Im confused on the fact that a scanner can do it just fine so why cant a
motorola radio.
The reason for using it is one I got it at a great cost.
The second is that it has the w9 remote head and I dont have lots of room in my
truck and this would work out great. Also becuse of the large alpha numeric
display.
I have seen tow trucks with 4 or 5 800mhz radios that are programmned for
receive only and they use them to scan the local so and hpd systems for wrecks
and such.
There using motorola astro radios as well.

Dan seems to have explained it adequately and accurately as far as most of
us know. These radios transmit as soon as all the proper parameters are met
for "affiliating" with a trunked network so they can register to it.
Affiliating IS transmitting. No way around it that I know of. As Dan
stated, some earlier, older radios

Didn't need to affiliate and therefore could be used as glorified scanners
but the new current XTS and XTL 5K's just don't do it.

You state that "I know its possible". Might be a great chance to talk to
the persons whom have these radios that are doing what you want them to do
and ask them how they're doing it. Chances are they are either allowed on
the trunking network they are listening to or are using an older radio with
a W9 head on it. And if they are monitoring with an XTL5K without
permission and NOT affiliating, well, then maybe you could let all of us
know how they're doing it!

Cheers!

Well....I guess when I stated that I want it to receive only and not to
affiliate with the system..I got told the obvious.
Again...I know its possible...Id like to be told how.
I know it can be turned into a paperweight if its not supposed to be on the
system. THATS IF ITS TRANSMITTING.
Would it be simpler if i stated that no mike would be plugged into it.

The other way to get if fixed is if you are able to locate someone with Astro 25
Depot Tool to remove the inhibited radio status.

You'd be much better off selling that radio and buy a scanner and enjoy a little
bit of extra money. If you were some how able to get it to recieve only and it
accidently keyed up, it would show as an unauthorized radio and made inoperable
by a dispatcher and the only way to fix that is send it to Motorola.

The current models of Motorola Astro25 radios (XTS series, XTL series,
APX series)) auto affiliate with the system they are monitoring. If
your radio is not supposed to be on the system, the system
administrator may inhibit your radio and you have a very expensive
paper weight. The only way to get the radio un-inhibited, is to have
the system administrator that zapped your radio, unzap it.

Motorola Astro radios (Astro Spectra, Astro Saber, XTS3000) can be
configured to NOT auto affiliate, thus, you can listen to the system
and not have an issue. But once you transmit on that system, you have
affiliated with the system and the rest is explained above.
