If it can be done, How can I use an XP laptop with USB ports to program
the VX180's with the DOS software?

I was using a compaq laptop with db9 and it worked.
Company upgraded lap's and now I can not get it to work.

Thanks

DOS has no support for USB and only recognizes COM:1-COM:4. You may be
able to run the ce44 dos within a window of XP but I certainly do NOT
recommend it. Best solution is to get the CE44 windows version
software. Thats it done...it will work in windows.

Sorry, One other thing... I am guessing your cable is DE-9 serial. You
can get a USB to serial adapter OR PCMCIA to serial adapter OR a USB
programming cable (there are some after market ones). I have had many
problems with USB to serial adapters. Can get some to work sometimes,
on some computers. I had more than one working fine and just stopped.
If you search the message archives you will see a lot of messages
regarding USB to serial. Some people get them to work fine. I don't
seem to have that kind of luck.

I have a CP200 portable which comes up with error Version not
supported. I do not have the most recent CPS. I bought a subscription
but I guess it must have expired since it is no longer in MOL. Other
stuff that I bought earlier is still available. I don't get it.
Anybody able to help? I am guessing 5.07 is the most recent version??
Email me direct.

"M33DGC20C2__" is definitely in the MDF list for the SM50/SM120 RSS. Most
likely, someone has hacked the RSS you have, before you got it. The "20"
that follows the "DGC" means that the radio was made for standard 20K0F3E
bandwidth; if it were "00" it means that the radio was made for narrow
11K0F3E bandwidth. That's really one of the few shortcomings of the SM50

That error message simply means that the model number of your radio does not
appear exactly matching one of the model numbers in the "SM50.MDF" file.
MDF stands for "Model Definition File." You must use HVN9007 RSS to program
your radio, but if you have a very old version (the current version is
R05.00.00), the suffix may not match, causing the error.

What is the complete model number of your radio, and what version of HVN9007
RSS do you have?

The USB port isn't what makes the configuration - it's the device. And
I've configured plenty of USB to serial adapters as COM1. You may just
need to disable COM1 in your computers BIOS. (Even if you don't
physically have a COM1 on your motherboard, the BIOS may think you do.)

You might go into your device manager and see what connections are available
for the cable and change to one that is not in use. I have to do that with
my Kenwood's that I program USB.

Here is another thought. Tie the output of the
MDC board to a relay, turning on your siren.

That would certainly let you know you got a call...

An AFG grant perhaps? Upgrade the entire system?

AFG grants are made for just this kind of situation, and
if you are a rural department they can be had for only a
5% share.

And you want the CHEAPEST radio? To risk your life with?

And run? Never never never run. Walk with purpose. More
fireground injuries come from running than you can shake two
sticks at, and it does not make anything go faster.

The radio requires two points on one of the boards to be shorted as well to put
it in Programming mode.

Open it up by removing the 2 screws and carefully squeeze the front panel on the
sides to release to two parts.

Again carefully place the two parts next to each other. There is a ribbon cable
connecting the two boards.

on one of the boards you will find 3 contacts in the upper right corner 2
across one down

Short the the two down : together as you power up and it will go into
prorgraming mode

I don't know where the Scan and pwr on comes from unless someone ran a jumper
from one of the contacts of the scan button to do the shorting.
(I did this with mine but I used the Monitor button on the side)

Let me know how it works out for you. We may be able to swap programming info
on the radios.

Someone sent me this link and it works for MDC signaling:
http://cimtechcorp.com/CIM-1000K.asp
So I guess I will be ordering some a few boards for the 2180's and 5210 that
I have.
Thanks for the information on that Kenwood site Paul that also helped a lot.

here is what i have found out about this unit:

The TK-5210/5310 premium, high specification, heavy-duty portables offer
conventional FM and conventional P25 digital operation for present and
future interoperability requirements for law enforcement, fire and emergency
services. Available in a basic non-display, display and display with keypad
models, the 16 Character LCD and controls provide an intuitive user
interface simplifying P25 and FM operation for all user types. The P25
trunked option permits operation on local, regional and statewide Project 25
compliant networked systems. The extra large capacity and Zone programming
facilitate departmental, inter-agency interoperability, mutual aid and
tactical channel organization. Encryption /ANI control permits basic to high
level voice security and dispatch functions satisfying homeland security and
confidentiality requirements. Standardized DES-OFB and AES encryption
options permits advanced secure interoperable voice communications.
Emergency Call and Man-Down for hazardous environment and jail/corrections
personnel is supported for P25, FleetSync and MDC-1200/G-Star options.

Morning,

Been looking at the unit and I am curious as to if the unit can do MDC
signaling?

Thanks

Why don't you set yourself up with a nice base station with an external antenna.
You could get a UHF CDM1250 with MDC1200 for around $500 or less. Then get a
good outdoor antenna with good coax. Then you will be able to transmit and
receive from your house with no problem.

   Thanks all for the responses.

Let me explain in more detail what I am trying to accomplish.

The Vol. Dept. radio reception is just out of range in my rural
area(VHF). I stand on on one foot and hold up my portable (VHF with
MDC1200) to hear the call, then I run out to my car (the mobile has
perfect reception)and respond using my (VHF) SM120 (25w-barley enough
on a good day and I wish it had MDC1200 -for PTT ID in this case).

So here is what I have been working on. I picked up a Pyramid SVR-200U
(on eBay) and connected it to my SM120 and I am using a borrowed UHF
portable for crossband repeating (what I thought would be the most
cost effective and reliable option). All this, so that I can actually
hear the calls and respond without running out to my car.

Now back to my original question:

What is the cheepest radio that I can buy that will do MDC-1200? (My
thinking is to buy a UHF portable with MDC1200 so my base will pick up
my PTT-ID though the repeater and the SM120).

Where can I get an MDC 1200 chip for a Mobile Radius SM120?
(Or I could use any UHF portable radio and add MDC1200 to my SM120 for
   the reasons stated above.)

As far as the discussion of whether or not the SM series can do
MDC1200, I don't know if this proves anything but it is discussed in
the help files for the programming software for SM50-SM120.

   Thanks all!

Hey Kev, It's a genuine Kenwood TK-208, I bought it new - gosh it
must be nearly 10 years ago now!

Can any members please help with the programming software and the
programming cable schematic for the Tait Orca
(TOP-I2410-B01440)portable radio. Any help would be greatly
