The Virtues of the First 10 days of Dhul Hijjah

Albaseerah News letter Issue # 2 of Vol. 1

From the most virtuous of days are the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah (the 12th month in the lunar calendar, one of the sacred months and the month of Hajj). A group of those from the People of Knowledge say: �Verily they are the best days of the year just as the last ten nights of Ramadaan are the best nights of the year.� Some of the various types of righteous actions which are done in these first ten days are mentioned below:

REMEMBRANCE OF ALLAAH

The first of the righteous actions is the remembrance of Allaah �� . Allaah �� said: {�and the men and the women who remember Allaah much with their hearts and tongues - Allaah has prepared for them forgiveness and a great reward (i.e. Paradise).} [al-Ahzaab 33:35]

It is affirmed in a number of texts the encouragement of mentioning the takbeer. Allaah �� said: {�and mention the Name of Allaah on appointed days (i.e. 10th, 11th, 12th, and 13th day of Dhul-Hijjah)} [al-Hajj 22:28]

It has been affirmed from the Sahaabah (Companions) of the Prophet �� and from him �� , that they increased in the takbeer (saying �Allaahu Akbar�Allaah is the Greatest) in the first ten days of the month of Dhul Hijjah and they raised their voice with it, each one of them saying the takbeer on his own. They raised their voices until the mountains shook from their takbeer but they did not say the takbeer in unison (in Jamaa�ah). Each of them said the takbeer on his own.

VOLUNTARY ACTS OF WORSHIP

One should implement the voluntary acts of worship - whether prayer, fasting or charity. It is reported in hadeeth that the Prophet�� encouraged fasting the ten days and it is reported that he �� said: �Whoever fasts the Day of Arafah will have his sins expiated for two years (the past year and the coming year).� [Ibn Maajah]

DO NOT CUT HAIR OR NAILS FOR THE ONE DOING THE SACRIFICE

From what is considered as righteous actions on these ten days is that the one who wants to do the Udhiyyah (sacrificial slaughter) should not cut his hair or nails during these ten days. As such it is desired that he commits himself before these ten days by cutting his hair and nails. The Prophet �� said: �When any one of you intending to sacrifice the animal enters in the month (of Dhul-Hijjah) he should not get his hair or nails touched (cut)�. [Muslim]

SUPPLICATE FOR THE HUJJAAJ

One should make du`aa (supplication) for the hujjaaj (pilgrims who have embarked upon the Hajj) that Allaah �� keeps them safe from all evil and that He returns them to their countries. This is because the hujjaaj are the guests of Ar-Rahmaan so they have a right upon us that we supplicate for them for ease in their affairs and their safe return.

UDHIYYAH - SACRIFICIAL SLAUGHTER

One should prepare to do the Udhiyyah (sacrificial slaughtering of an animal) and arranging distribution of the meat amongst family, friends, the needy etc. This is from the pious and righteous deeds. Abu Haneefah �� was of the opinion that it was from the obligatory acts but most of others say that it is desirable. The Prophet �� said �Who does not slaughter should not come to the salaah�. [Ibn Maajah]

ATTEND THE `EED SALAAH

From amongst the righteous actions is attending the salaatul `Eed, greeting one another, and leaving off fasting on the day of `Eed and on the days of Tashreeq (i.e. the 11th, 12th and 13th of Dhul Hijjah).

Based on a lectured by Shaykh Sa`d ash-Shitree (may Allaah preserve him).

The Ruling on Celebrating a non-Muslim Holiday ('Eed ) like, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter and so on.

[1] Greeting the Kuffaar on Christmas and other similar holidays of theirs is haraam, by ittifaaq (consensus of the `Ulamaa'), as Ibn al-Qayyim said in Ahkaam Ahl adh-Dhimmah:

"Congratulating the Kuffaar on the rituals that belong to them is prohibited by consensus, as is congratulating them on their festivals by saying ‘A happy festival to you’ or ‘May you enjoy your festival,’ and so on..."

[End Quote]

[2] It is prohibited for a Muslim to accept invitations on such occasions, because this is worse than congratulating them -- as it implies taking part in their celebrations.

[3] Similarly, Muslims are forbidden to imitate the Kuffaar by having parties on such occasions, or exchanging gifts, or giving out sweets or food, or taking time off work, etc. because the Prophet Muhammad (sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam) said:

مَنْ تَشَبَّهَ بِقَومٍ فَهُوَ مِنْهُمْ

"Whoever imitates a people is one of them."

This hadeeth was authenticated by Abu Daawood, Ibn Hibbaan, Ibn Hajar, Ibn Taymiyyah (with the wording: ليس منا من تشبه بغيرنا "He is not from us, the one who imitates others beside us."), Az-Zarqaani, Adh-Dhahabi, Al-Haythami, Al-`Iraaqi, As-Sakhaawi, As-San`aani, Muhammad Jaarullaah As-Sa'di, Ahmad Shaakir, Ibn Baaz, Al-Albaani (with the additional wording: ليس منا من تشبه بغيرنا، و لا تشبهوا باليهود و لا بالنصارى And do not imitate the Jews nor the Christians.), Ibn `Uthaymeen, and others.

Ibn Taymiyyah said in his beautiful, classic and monumental book Iqtidaa’ as-Siraat al-Mustaqeem, mukhaalifat Ashaab al-Jaheem (In Pursuit of the Straight Path by Contradicting the People of the Hellfire): "Imitating them in some of their festivals implies that one is pleased with their false beliefs and practices, and gives them the hope that they may have the opportunity to mislead the weak."

Conclusion:

Whoever does anything of this sort is a sinner, whether he does it out of politeness or to be friendly, or because he is too shy to refuse, or for whatever other reason, because this is hypocrisy in Islaam, and because it makes the Kuffaar feel proud of their ways & festivals.

Note: The hadeeth of `Aa'ishah in Saheeh al-Bukhari & Muslim, where she narrated that on the Day of `Eed , 2 young girls (Ansaari ) were doing a special performance for her (singing some songs). And then when Abu Bakr came to visit the Prophet, and found these girls with `Aa'ishah - he rebuked them harshly. So the Prophet (sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam)(who had been facing the wall), said:

يَا أَبَا بَكْر, إنَّ لِكُلِّ قَومٍ عِيدًا, وهَذَا عِيْدُنَا

"Abu Bakr, (know that) every nation (every group of people) has a `Eed (festival, annual day of celebration). And this is our `Eed."

`Eed is the name given to something which returns (ya’ood), and is used to describe gatherings which happen repeatedly, on a yearly, monthly or weekly basis, etc.

So the Prophet (sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam) clearly stated, that this was the `Eed of the People of Islaam.

`Eed (celebration) after Ramadaan. And `Eed at the end of the Hajj season.

And Friday is also considered a `Eed for the Muslims, because it is a weekly gathering, and is the best day of the week.

Note 2: The Prophet (sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam) also explicitly expressed his desire to contradict the ways, celebrations, festivals (etc) of the non-Muslims. Very important hadeeth.

In this hadeeth that has a jayyid isnaad (good chain), Umm Salamah Hind Bint Abi Umayyah said that,

أن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم كان يصوم السبت والأحد ، ويقول : هما عيدان للمشركين فأنا أحب أن أخالفهما

The Prophet (sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam) used to fast on Saturdays and on Sundays, and he would say: "These are `Eedaan (two days of `Eed) for the Mushrikoon. So I love to oppose them (contradict them, differ from them) in these two."

So... for the pagans, Saturday & Sunday - was a special holiday for them. A 'Eed. On these days they would party, celebrate, relax, enjoy, dance, sing. Merry Christmas... And in and of itself, there's nothing wrong with relaxing on Saturday/Sunday... but the fact that the Mushrikoon took these 2 days, as Holidays (Festive occasions), was enough reason for the Prophet (sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam) to want to ... not imitate them & fast on these days (to show his indifference, his disregard for their `Eed ).

So, JUST TO DIFFER FROM THEM, to show that we're different, to indicate that he - in no way - is taking part in their `Eed... he would fast on Saturdays/Sundays. As if to send a clear message: "I'm not partaking in the `Eed of non-Muslims. I want to differ from them." أريد أن أخالفهما I want to differ from their practice (of relaxing, enjoying, partying) on these 2 days. So - even though it's permissible to relax on Saturdays/Sundays - he decided to exert himself & fast on these 2 days, just for this particular purpose.

* So you can just imagine what the Prophet (sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam) would've said -- if he were alive today -- about Christmas or Thanksgiving!!!

What would he say - upon seeing MUSLIMS (His "followers") greeting, and warmly congratulating the Kuffaar on their `Eeds ?

What if he saw his Ummah actually having Christamas trees & lights, imitating the Kuffaar & making these `Eeds of the disbelievers a part of their lives?

FULLY INDULGING -- Forget contradicting, and trying to differ from them ~ the Muslims are not even shunning their practices -- Complete participation in their Traditions. "Followers" of Muhammad - as they claim - exchanging Christmas cards/presents with the Kuffaar, making Thanksgiving turkeys... and on top of this, allowing their children to go & partake with the Kuffaar in trick-or-treating & Halloween related events. لا حول ولا قوة إلا بالله

مَنْ تَشَبَّهَ بِقَومٍ فَهُوَ مِنْهُمْ

"Whoever imitates a people is one of them."

So the above Prophetic Words do not apply -- as some ignorant people misunderstand -- to normal common things, like wearing a T-shirt, or sneakers, or driving a car... no! It refers to things that are specific for non-Muslims & are well-known to be widely practiced by Kuffaar. Halloween, Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter, -- there is no doubt whatsoever that such `Eeds fall into this meaning.

(Hence, based on the above Hadeeth) If you strive to imitate the Prophet Muhammad (sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam) and his Companions, then you're from them.

Note 3: Just came across something else Ibn al-Qayyim said in his book, Ahkaam Ahl adh-Dhimmah (1/723-724). He said:

It is not permissible for the Muslims to attend the festivals of the disbelievers, according to the consensus of the scholars whose words carry weight.

The Fuqahaa’ who follow the 4 schools of thought have stated this clearly in their books… Al-Bayhaqi narrated with a saheeh isnaad from ‘Umar ibn al-Khattaab that he said: “Do not enter upon the disbelievers on the day of their festival, for divine wrath is descending upon them.” And ‘Umar also said: “Avoid the enemies of Allah on their festivals.”

Al-Bayhaqi narrated with a jayyid isnaad from ‘Abdullaah ibn ‘Amr that he said: “Whoever settles in the land of the non-Arabs and celebrates their new year and festival and imitates them until he dies in that state, will be gathered with them on the Day of Resurrection.”

Shaykh Muhammad Ibn Saalih al-'Uthaymeen Clarifies that al-Jarh wat-Ta'deel Exists in Current Times - The noble Scholar, the Faqeeh, al-'Allaamah al-'Uthaymeen is asked a question about the science of al-Jarh wat-Ta'deel (disparagement and appraisal) being dead in our times and no longer being in existence. He clarifies that al-Jarh wat-Ta'deel is not sick, nor is it buried, nor is it dead. Rather, he explains that al-Jarh wat-Ta'deel still exists in the Sharee'ah courts, in the books of hadeeth and in warning against the people of innovation and misguidance.
BENEFIT: The noble Scholar is asked about al-Jarh wat-Ta'deel in modern times and he affirms that, not only is al-Jarh wat-Ta'deel recorded in the books of hadeeth, but it also exists today in the Sharee'ah courts and it exists today in refuting and warning against the callers to innovation and misguidance. So take note, O Sunnee, and do not be fooled by the doubts of al-Halabee, 'Ar'oor, Maghraawee, Huwaynee and Hassaan and their followers who say that al-Jarh wat-Ta'deel no longer exists!
Compare the speech of Imaam Ibnul-'Uthaymeen to that of 'Alee al-Halabee who says, "This has gone to the extent that the theme of al-Jarh wat-Ta?deel, all of it in modern times has no connection to the theme of the Jarh wat-Ta?deel of the past. The Jarh wat-Ta?deel of the past was established upon foundations for the preservation of the narrations. Nowadays, the narrations (i.e. collection of hadeeth) have come to a halt." Then he back-pedals from this with, "However, we do not say that the science of al-Jarh wat-Ta?deel has been discontinued, but we say that the science of al-Jarh wat-Ta?deel has changed its direction." Refer to the entirety of Notification to the Intelligent Part 1 for this statement of al-Halabee, along with the replies to it.
BENEFIT ? DEFENCE OF THE SUNNAH IS MORE VIRTUOUS THAN JIHAAD: Nasr Ibn Yahyaa said: I heard Muhammad Ibn Yahyaa adh-Dhuhalee (d.258H) - rahimahullaah - saying: I heard Yahyaa Ibn Yahyaa saying, ?Defending the Sunnah is more virtuous than Jihaad in the Path of Allaah.? Muhammad said: I said to Yahyaa, ?A man gives his wealth, burdens himself, and fights, but that is more virtuous than this?? So he said, ?Yes, much better!? Refer to Siyar A?laamun-Nubalaa? (10/518) of adh-Dhahabee.
Al-Jarh wat-Ta'deel will Remain until the Day of Judgement:
The muhaddith of Yemen, Imaam Muqbil Ibn Haadee al-Waadi?ee (d.1421H) was asked, ?And the one who says that it (i.e. al-Jarh wat-Ta?deel) ended along with the time of the narrators of hadeeth?? He answered, ?Those who say that it ended ? O brothers ? they know that they are majroohoon (disparaged). For this reason, they do not want anyone to speak about al-Jarh wat-Ta?deel.? Refer to the cassette, as-Seeratudh-Dhaatiyyah of Muqbil Ibn Haadee al-Waadi?ee.
And Shaykh Rabee? al-Madkhalee said, ?And the time of narrations ended in the third generation. So why did Ibn Taymiyyah raise the banner of criticism (an-naqd) and the banner of al-Jarh wat-Ta?deel?! Likewise, so did adh-Dhahabee, Ibnul-Qayyim, Ibn Katheer, Ibn Hajr and others and they will continue until the Day of Judgement! As long as there is this fight between the truth and falsehood and between the guidance and misguidance and between the people of the truth and falsehood and between the people of guidance and the misguidance, then it is inevitable that the swords of criticism and al-Jarh wat-Ta?deel be unsheathed against the people of falsehood.? Refer to As?ilah Abee Rawaahah al-Manhajiyyah (p. 26).
Shaykh Muhammad Ibn ?Umar Baazmool said, ?Shaykh al-Albaanee is a sign from the signs in these times with regards to hadeeth. He described Shaykh Rabee? as the flag-bearer of al-Jarh wat-Ta?deel in these times!! So if this description was inapplicable, Shaykh al-Albaanee would have been the foremost of the people in opposing it and not applying it to a man living in these times, because he (i.e. al-Albaanee) is from the specialists in this field.? Refer to the cassette, al-Ajwibatul-Manhajiyyah ?alal-As?ilatis-Salafiyyatil-Leebiyyah.

�In the name of Allaah, and all praise belongs to Allaah. May salutation and blessing be bestowed upon the Messenger of Allaah and those that follow him. To proceed:

We, tonight, are in the first night of Shawwaal, in the year 1430 after the Hijrah, which is in alignment with the 20^th of September, 2009, according to the Gregorian calendar.

[This is] a discussion concerning the seminar that the brothers here are intending, while coordinating and organizing with Ma�had-ul-Furqan in America, which is being supervised by the two noble Brothers, Brother Muhammad Nazeeh and Brother Mustafaa al-Amreekee, since they, may Allaah reward them with excellence, have desired and requested from us and from some of the brothers who are from the people of righteousness here in Kuwait, to hold an intensive academic seminar for them.

Many of the brothers from amongst the virtuous Mashaayikh have agreed to it. They are the elite from amongst our brothers, the Students of Knowledge and Mashaayikh who have graduated from the Islamic Universities of these lands. The foremost of them is Shaykh Saalim bin Sa�d at-Taweel, Doctor Hamad bin Ibraaheem al-�Uthmaan, Doctor Hamad bin Muhammad al-Haajiree, and Doctor Aboo Salaah Muhammad Hishaam. Furthermore, the one speaking with you now will also participate in this seminar, your brother, Falaah bin Ismaa�eel. We are participating in and overseeing this seminar.

And we hope from Allaah, the Blessed, the Exalted, to grant us success, to guide us to that which is correct, and that we give something to the brothers, who will come and attend from their lands to Kuwait.

I also ask Allaah, the Mighty, the Majestic, to grant them success, to benefit them, to bring about benefit through them, to record this journey of theirs as a journey in the quest for knowledge, and to bring about a revival through them and through this first group that is intending to attend this seminar. And it is the first seminar in cooperation with Ma�had-ul-Furqan in America.

It is the first seminar of this institute, and it is also the first seminar that the brothers here, as well as the Mashaayikh, will be holding in order to teach the beneficial and essential sciences from the perspective of the [Arabic] Language, from the perspective of the �Aqeedah (Creed), from the perspective of Tafseer, from the perspective of Hadeeth, and from the perspective of Fiqh so that they can return, by the permission of Allaah, Students of Knowledge and Du�aat (Callers) for their lands.

I also hope that this will open a door or open an incredible door of excellence in encouraging the youth and the brothers that have the ability to attend and those who their attendance and travel has been facilitated for them. I ask Allaah to bless these efforts, and to accept it from us and them.�

Official Decision and Announcement of the High Judiciary Council of Saudi Arabia...

Just a short time ago, Fatwa-Online was informed of the official decision and announcement of the High Judiciary Council of Saudi Arabia that since the moon of Shawwaal was sighted this evening, here in Saudi Arabia, we shall be completing twenty nine (29) days of Ramadhaan (1430 A.H.), in accordance with the hadeeth of the Messenger of Allaah (sal-Allaahu `alayhe wa sallam):

((Fast when you see the crescent. If it is obscured to you, then complete thirty days of Sha'baan. And break your fast when you see the crescent. If it is obscured to you then fast thirty days)), [transmitted by al-Bukhaaree and Muslim].

Subsequently, we shall be celebrating 'Eed al-Fitr on Sunday 20th September 2009, inshaa.-Allaah.

In the Name of Allaah, the Beneficent, the Bestower of Mercy

O Servants of Allaah! Which one of you does not long for Paradise?!

O Servants of Allaah! Which one of you does not desire the knowledge to aid you on your path to Paradise?!

O Servants of Allaah! Which one of you does not have a love for taking knowledge from the Scholars of Ahl-us-Sunnah wal-Jamaa�ah?!

Allaah, the Exalted, has stated: �Allaah raises in degrees those amongst you who believe and those amongst you who possess knowledge.� Soorah al-Mujaadilah [58: 11]

And He, the Exalted, has stated: �Certainly, those that truly fear Allaah from amongst His servants are the Scholars.� Soorah Faatir [35: 28]

The Prophet, may the Salaah and Salaam of Allaah be upon him, has stated: �Whoever traverses a path seeking knowledge therein, Allaah will make a path to Paradise easy for him.� Recorded by Muslim.

Ibn al-Qayyim, may Allaah bestow Mercy upon him, has stated: �If there was nothing in knowledge except nearness to the Lord of all in existence, being connected to the world of the angels, and being in the company of the high ranking elite (with Allaah), then that would be a sufficiency of nobility and virtue. How is it then when the might and valor of this life as well as the Hereafter is connected to it and is a condition of the one who acquires it?� Muftaahu Daar-is-Sa�aadah (1/108).

Our Dear Noble and Respected Brothers and Sisters! Your opportunity is here! This is your chance!

Ma�had-ul-Furqan has been established to connect you directly to the Scholars by bringing you directly to them and placing you directly at their feet! We have no doubt that each one of you desires this opportunity for yourself!

Recall the statement of �Alee bin Abee Taalib, may Allaah be Pleased with him: �The life of this world is constantly moving further away from you while the Hereafter is constantly moving closer towards you, and each one of them has children. So be children of the Hereafter and do not be children of the worldly life. For today there is action without being taken to account and tomorrow there is the account however there will be no more actions.� Fath-ul-Baaree (11/235).

Take advantage of this opportunity. Place these deeds upon your scales of good deeds. For any one of us who has the ability to perform a good deed today may not have that same ability tomorrow!
