What I am curious about is… do you feel, like I do, that the genealogy industry
(e.g., Ancestry.com, familysearch.org, etc.) would benefit from having more
reliable, accurate, and predictable data management practices? I have provided a
post with details of an industry initiative that might help... see:

For those wishing to gain access to photographic images of the actual
Heimatortskartei from the towns, cities & villages which were near what used to
be Danzig in West Prussia, they are available on FamilySearch. Here are the
particulars with a bit of background for those who may not be familiar with this
act of ethnic cleansing by the allies which followed World War 2.

Hello all,

I have placed a number of pointers to primarily West Prussian ( & some East
Prussian) Mennonite information from two posts on ManyRoads. I have also
provided a link to a major research site on Eastern German Mennonites there as
well. I hope the information is useful to someone besides me...

Presenting any family's genealogy on the web is something of a challenge. I
have been struggling with this problem for more than 5 years now. Perhaps you
are somewhat stymied by this problem also. Recently I built a new style
environment (for three of my family branches) to address the most critical
problems as I have experienced them.

I have all the particulars and example environments posted on ManyRoads at:

Searching for missing or lost family members from the former German Eastern
Provinces can be quite challenging. I have published a rather lengthy (for me)
post on this subject. Hopefully the ideas it presents will help those
attempting to get started or get re-started in this area.

The same concepts, discussed in my post, apply to searches pretty much anywhere
where information is hard to find and change has been massive.

Hello all.

After a forum message from a German friend, I decided to find and add pre-1945
Polska (Poland) maps to ManyRoads. As many of you may know I am a big fan of
using maps in genealogy work. You may view my entire collection (several
hundred) here:

My new, albeit small, pre-1945 Polska map collection is to be found at:

More will arrive as I find those that interest me... ;^)

As I mentioned in an earlier post
(http://www.many-roads.com/2012/01/29/data-gathering-tools-new-to-me/), recently
I came across a VERY promising research tool to assist in gathering, sorting,
and sharing research source materials. That tool is called Mendeley-
http://www.mendeley.com/features/. It enhances, compliments, and can even
replace tools like Zotero. It, also, links interactively with desktop word
processing tools like LibreOffice/OpenOffice and perhaps even M$Office (although
I don't own a copy of that to test). Mendeley, also, allows me to share its
content across multiple platforms including my Linux Laptops, my iPad and,
according to the provider, Mac and Windows. Finally, the tool itself tracks,
inventories and gathers information from within Firefox and similar web browsers
or directly from my Desktop, if I happen to have my information there.

Oh, and before I forget... did I mention the tool allows for socializing
selected information and publications (individually or through Groups of Common
Interest). Oh yes, and basic Mendeley usage is Free.

Two quick additional items:

1. If you are performing genealogy research and want to join in sharing
resources and source materials with me, please join Mendeley and my Genealogy
Researchers Group (Note: this group requires a Mendeley Account to View:
http://www.mendeley.com/groups/1807351/genealogy-researchers/papers/).
2. If you are interested in following some of my exploits in using the Mendeley
Toolsuite you can my publicly available 'research' (meaning you don't need to
use Mendeley to see these here:

Hi Kim

Mendeley has 2 major differences... it is for conducting academic
research (it automatically builds bibliographies and allows communities
to merge and share source materials) plus it runs on all major platforms
(Evernote is primarily a windows thing with nods to other environments).

I tried and did not like Evernote... for whatever that's worth. But
then it takes a lot of hacking to make it work on my platforms.

Hello all,

As a follow-up to my earlier complaints about FTM2012, I have found what might
be a solution. This solution may not necessarily be for the feint of heart.
But, it is worth consideration given the frustration involved in having
non-functional software which you 'really' want to work.

Hello everyone.

Because a lot of folks over the years have questioned the value of having
genealogy information on a website, I thought I'd take this opportunity to
report that ManyRoads (my website) recently received its 200,000th visitor.

You may read the posting/ announcement here:

Does any of this help? I don't know, but it does mean that some amount of my
website information is being scrutinized.

Hello all.

I apologize if this is not of huge interest. But for those of you who have been
following my meanderings and musings, I have written a posting on growing from
the past and into the future. I even included some photos to help illustrate
my points (I'm just living on the edge).

If you think there might be someone who would be interested in this, please feel
free to pass it along.

ps. Thank you to Joachim for prompting my writing with his "Deutsche Grabsteine
gefunden" message...

Hello all,

I might just have too much time on my hands. But if you are interested in a
list on why one of this list's readers does genealogy work, my ponderings on the
topic may be read here:

Please feel free to send this on to anyone you feel my be entertained.

Hello all,

For those of you who are iffy on the use of Ancestry hints, I, more often than
not, join you. However, recently I experienced an eye opening. As an old guy,
I am not really awfully keen on changing my nearly perfect opinions. ;^) But if
you are interested in hearing or reading another perspective, I have one to
share at:

Hello all,

If you are among those interested in getting help with 'your' German Genealogy
efforts, perhaps this posting and its pointers will be useful. If you know of
others who might be able to benefit, feel free to pass the information along to
them as well.
