Hello everyone, I am new to the group so any directions or help would be greatly
appreciated. I am located near Washington, D.C.

The reason I have joined is the fact we have no record of our Platzke family.
A grand father,
Hermann Platzke, Born 14 Aug 1880, Danzig, Prussia has no record of parents or
any family in the area that we can locate. There is a story that he was given as
a baby to an aunt by the name of Platzke to save his life. It is believed his
parents were jewish, and possibly had the name of Von Hohenfels.

Any suggestions on where to start?

   Regards,

   Tom

Did the Platzkes or Von Hohenfels come to the US? If they did census
records would be great. Go to a local Family History Center (altho
connected to the Mormon Church they are helpful to everyone) they
have records from all over the world.

What about religious records? If they were Jewish there is a great
Jewish website. I will have to look it up and get back to you.

My own g-grandparents were Theodore and Anna (Briese) Scholz from
Breslau, Silesia, Prussia now Wroclaw, Poland and I have lots of
questions too.

Thank you for your response,

Only the one Hermann Platzke came to the US. We have as much as we can locate
on his arrival in the State of Georgia about 1902 as well as here in Maryland.
Prior to that no information. The word of mouth story is he left the Platzkes in
Poland and went to sea, jumped ship in Florida and made his way to Darien,
Georgia, where he obtained citizenship and then married our grandmother.

We have checked the family history center, and found no useful information
yet. I would greatly appreciate the Jewish information website.

Like you, we have lots of questions, especially when word of mouth stories
paint an interesting history.

   Regards,

   Tom

Tom, hadn't checked yahoo for a while and saw your answer.
I found a site http://www.progenealogists.com/genealogysleuthb.htm that
has a lot of sites and in the middle of the lower page there are two or
three jewish sites. Lots of other sites, but not much for Maryland.

Sounds like you have already touched a lot of bases. Hope you can find
something. Do you speak German? I would imagine that would help a lot
researching overseas.

I will check the website. I use Google tranlator to read the foreign
websites. It works very good.

Thank you,

Hessen-Darmstadt or Prussia?

I have family helping me, thank god.
But it's still confusiing.
I've found things in Kansas that should fit- found the Fourier name
there in the area- but how to go after what else could be
there in Nebraksa and Illinois is something I'm still looking at.

But what's worrying me is Europe.

I knew it wouldn't be easy, even with help, but this is nuts.

I hope to find more beofre looking for a researcher- which is
something I may end up doing on parts of my tree.

So what would you suggest I do with informatiton pointing to two
different states and countires?

I can spread it out to family, but I want to contribute.

How does anyone go about something like this?

Hello, I can understand your problem. Try geneanet.org\
it is a foreign genealogy website somewhat like ancestry.com. You can
join at a basic level without cost. There are other websites you will
learn about and see at geneanet. You will need Google translate found
at the Goodle website.

I am trying to find a family members parents in Poland/Prussia by the
name of Platzke, but no luck yet - I just keep trying and hope
something turns up.

Good luck,

Tom

I have recently found out what Church my 3rd great grand father
belonged to, but have run into a snag in which I won't be able to get
around until I figure out where he's from.
The Evangelical Church in Berlin does not do name searches, one has
to know the name, place and year of the person they are looking for.
I know the year and name, but not the place.
But at least I know what denomination to look under here in the US,
if I can find any that still exist in the counties that I have my
great grand parents living in.
I have heard of one great grand father going to the Baptist Church,
but he never became a memeber, so if I find out there weren't any
Evangelical Churches in the ares that I'm looking at, that could be
the next best thing right?
Hopefully my search became a little easier after this, since church
rosters will have things written down on each family that is part of
the congregation. Or they should have such things.

I'll see from the numbers that I have if I can find a Church
congregation in the Kane County area in which John and his wife Mary
were members of if it still exists, some churches have the habit of
falling apart and making new ones from the ashes, so this should be
fun.

Wish me luck!!

We are trying to locate the parents of Hermann Platzke, born 1880 in
Prussia. He married a Mary Esther Wallace in Georgia, about 1902. He
died in 1967 in Maryland. Our records have located a Prussian or
Polish/German spelling of Platzke as Plotzkeu. This Platzke family may
have connections to the Von Hohenfels family of Poland.

Hi,
I'm new to this group. I am trying to find my ancestors in Prussia.
I'll tell you what I know so far.
Friederich Johan Herzog born c. 1862, came to US c 1881. His parents
Friederich Herzog born C. 1833 d 1910 in Chicago and Wilhelmina c.
1837 d 1900 in Chicago.
Fred J. married Susanna Weiss from Grethen,Bavaria. (I've traced her
family back a couple of generations.)
Fred and Susanna's 1st 3 children beginning in 1883 were born in TX,
the others, beginning in 1888 were born in Cook Co, IL.
I have a letter, translated by my grandfather from his mother which
says they were from "Twin hills", but a great aunt said it
is "Twincities". There is also a description of a coat of arms given
to an ancestor during the 30 years war of a group of women being
protected by a soldier/knight/duke.
One of the birth certificates of my great uncle, with info given by
his elder sibling in 1942, lists a place of birth for my great
grandfather as Matschulen or something like that. i haven't found a
city like that either.
I have some death certificates but none give me any info beyond pob
Germany. I have not been able to locate naturalization info or
immigration info.
This is long but I thought the more info I gave, the more possibility
someone could help me get beyond this brick wall. I've been stuck
here for about 5 years.
Thanks

I was born and raised in South Bend IN 1949-1987) and moved to South
Carolina in 1987. I started the family tree in 1995 when I sent
everybody that I could think of a letter asking for information.
Everybody sent me back info. I gave up on it for some years and now I
am back into it.

Surnames from Germany/Poland are:

Papczynski, Taberski or Taberska, Grochowalski, Starkweather, Paidle

I can go back to my Paternal great-grandfather Francis Papczynski
(but am unable to get DOD. His DOB 1869. He married Anna Taberski.

I can also go back to my 5th direct ancestor Michael Taberski but
don't know DOB or DOD he was marred to Catherine Varos.

On my mom's side I just stop at my great-grandmother (my mom's
grandmother) Jan Printz who moved to Chicago and died in Chicago) he
was married to Maryanne Lentych who died in Chicago ILL but no one
has any record of that.

My mom's great-grandfather was Martin Brajcki who married Agnieszak
Krusik no DOB or DOD for them. But stories goes that they died in
Wisconsin.

I am on Family Search and Ancestory.com (but only for the free
version) I don't know if paying for them is worth it or not, so I
hope someone can answer that question for me. Is it worth paying to

Hello, Lynn,
Can't help much right now, but might be able to direct you to some helpful
sites.
For Chicago/Illinois try IRAD, it is the Illinois Archives.
Also, they JUST opened a new site, CookCountyGenealogy.org.  You can search for
birth, death, and marriage and if you find what you want you can order and
download a copy of the certificate.  Each one costs $15, which is a drawback.
But if you find them in the marriages, you can use the record number to see who
they married.  That is free.
Another site for Chicago Poles, plus a few other places is PGSA.org.  They list
an index of deaths and marriages.  You can order obits, for a charge.  i usually
spend an afternoon there when I visit Chicago once a year.
I broke down and have a subscription to ancestry.  I will say that it has helped
me a lot.  I just re signed up, and took the full package.  It was only $40 more
ayear.  Not sure it will be haelpful, but I'll try it for a year anyway.
One other site for Poles, if they happen to be from the Posen/Poznan area is The
Poznan Project.easiest way to find it is just search for it.  It has a wierd
address.  It is free.  it has helped me immensely.
Gotta run.  Hope some of this helps.

Mary Diebel (1949 in Chicago), living in Nevada since 1987.  Similar to you.

Hi Lynn,
My name is Suzanne Richardson and I wanted to let you know that if you have a
library card, you might want to check with your library and see if they have
access to Ancestry.com.  My library does I just found out and am going to start
using their database search computers.  Also they told me that I can access
Heritage Quest on my on computer at home with my library card.  They have census
data from 1790-1930 and also have articles from magazines, papers and books that
might help.  I was amazed what I could find at Heritage Quest.  You might try
checking out those two options.  I have several Prussian ancestors that I have
not had time to research all the way back.  Seems like so many names and so
little time.  Good luck and will be glad to help if I can.

I found a relative in Germany and wrote to him about 8 years ago, he
wrote several letters to me all in Polish. My father had a very hard
time translating it. We have very few polish people in South Carolina
and the ones that I did contact said they had a hard time translating
it.

My husband took it to work and a person he knows that speaks German
could only translate a few words. He said that it was typed in
German/Polish language.

Does anyone know where I can get it translated or try to get it
translated?

Thanks

I suggest going to the Goggle translator at Goggle.com it is free,
but you will have to type in the letter. I have used it a number of
times with success. Also software translators are available at a cost.

Hi one and all. I'm looking for any information on how to look
up Prussian officers. My ggrandfather Rudolph Schneider came to the
US in 1883 from Prussia. Can't make out the town he came from it's
something like Luetzerdorf? Prussia. It could be spelt way different
from that. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Avis, I have had quite a time researching my Prussian ancestors
also as I have read some sites that tell you they will only research
if you live in that area but I still keep trying. If you know any
other info on you ggrandfather like who he was married to it might
help. I did find this on rootsweb about a Rudolph Schneider, don't
know if it will help but will send it to you. Look below my name

INDEX

[95] Rudolph Schneider was born in Dec 1863 in Prussia, Germany. He
emigrated to the United States prior to 1886 . He was naturalized as
an American citizen May 12, 1888 in Wayne County, Detroit, Michigan.
Two years late, on Jan 2, 1890 he married Augusta Rafinski in Detroit,
Michigan and proceeded to build a family. By the 1900 census, the
couple have 5 children, Rudolph is listed as a harness maker, and they
reside at 434 Lansing Ave, Detroit, Mi. By the 1910 census, Rudolph is
working as a laborer for the Standard Oil Company, and the count of
children is at 8. The 1920 census lists Rudolph Schneider as an auto
factory worker and apparently renting out an upstairs apartment to his
daughter Freida and her husband Martin Terrence Bertram and Martin's
mother, Catherine Laura Barbour.

[100] SCHNEIDER -- Feb. 14, at residence, 1250 Lansing, Rudolph A.,
beloved husband of Augusta, dear father of William
of Cissnapark (?), Ill., Rudolph JR., Otto, Arthur, Henry, Herbert,
Mrs Martin Bertram; dear brother of August
Schneider, of Port Huron, Mich.; grandfather of 15 (?) grandchildren;
member of L. B. M.. Funeral from above residence
Monday, 2 p. m., Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 2:30 p. m., interment at
Woodmere.

[104]Augusta Rafinski, daughter of Adam ( Micheal ? ) Rafinski, came
to the United States in 1887 aboard the ship "California" ,
accompanied by her sister Carolina Januschewski and neice Bertha
Januschewski. She landed in New York at age 25, by the ship's log. The
following year she was naturalized as a US citizen in Wayne County,
Michigan. On Jan 2, 1890, she married Rudolph A. Schneider, another
recent immigrant and began to raise a fine family. She worked as a
domestic during this time. Her sons and daughters were a closely knit
group throughout their lives. That stability added much to the lives
of their children as well. Augusta Rafinski Schneider passed away Dec
2, 1949 in Detroit, Mi.

[101] Arrived aboard ship "California" , with sister Caroline
Januschewski,

[105] Some after thoughts:
1. The story from Eleanor is that Augusta Rafinski had an older brother
(avoiding the army) who she accompanied (unwillingly) to the USA. She
was supposed to have been about 15 years old (that doesn't jibe with
your record of age 25 per ship's log). That maybe they stopped in
Pennsylvania (or close by) because they had sponsors there before moving
on to Detroit (by next year per your citizenship data. Got no name for
the brother. But well known Augusta had a sister Caroline Janusehewsfki
who was mentioned in August's obituary and was known to Eleanor and
Aline. Caroline lived in the neighborhood (528 Morrell St, Det). I
didn't find anyone with that surname in the current Switchboard.com for
Detroit or Port Huron.

2.Regarding Ruloph's family there are stories of a "uncle" who had a farm
on Grosse Isle and went broke (Art). And of relatives in Port Huron
involving an old man "uncle" and his daughter (Herb/Aline visited in
~1938), and maybe other "cousins" who like to fish a lot (Art). A "bunch"
of them showed up a funeral one day. Eleanor lists as Port Huron
relatives:
Mr and Mrs Linwood Schneider, Herman Schneider at 614 Division St., and
Lora Schneider. (Hey, are names mentioned in Rudolphs obit??). No
Schneiders by those names are currently in Switchboard.com, but they may
all be dead by now.

Art says that Rudolph built his own house at 1250 Lansing St. and wonders
where he got the money. Also says that Rudolph's brother was in on the
deal and had a butcher shop on the next lot to the North. That shop
became a candy store owned by someone else. Perhaps that could be traced
thru property records. Your census data indicates the 1900 residence at
434 Lansing. I'll have to ask the older cousins if the knew of another
homestead in the area.

3. You may not be aware that Rudolph and Augusta had years of disability
before their deaths. Rudolph was crippled with arthritis (and ?) and
Augusta has suffered a stroke or dementia. I remember she was "out of
it" and immobile for years before her death. Herbert (later with Aline)
bore the burden of caring for them for many years. Lastly, care fell to
the William Schneider's, the last family living in the house with
Augusta.

[106]SCHNEIDER-- Augusta wife of the late Rudolph Sr mother of William
Otto Mrs Frida Bertram, Arthur, Henry, Herbert and the late Rudolph Jr
and Mrs Alma Witt sister of Mrs Caroline Janusehewsfki also survived
by 17 grandchildrenand 9 great grandchildren At residence 1250 Lansing
until 10 a m Saturday In state Bethlehem Lutheran Church (McKinstry
near Porter) from 12 noon until time of service at 1 p m Saturday.

[109] Just had independent confirmation that we had the right August
Schneider
all along. Cousin Arthur Schneider in Lincoln Park found a guest book
for his father William's funeral from ~18 Aug 1964. Signing in for the
Port Huron attendees were "Mr and Mrs Linwood Schneider, Herman Schneider
(614 Division St), and Lora Schneider." Various Detroit cousins have
already affirmed from memory the names of Port Huron relatives included
Uncle August, Herman, Fred, Bertha, and Hattie.
This affirms the families:
August H. Schneider (1861-1941) X Edith Thrun (1866-1934),
with children William, Bertha, Herman, Lena, Albert (Fred?)
and children of Herman (1892-1974) X Hattie (1894-1957)
Laura, Norbert and Linwood.

Still a mystery is why the father of this August was listed in his death
record as Herman instead of Edward.; and what happened to William and
Fred?

[110]William Frederick Edward Schneider (October 16, 1890 - August 16,
1964) was the first of ten children born to Rudolph Schneider and
Augusta (Rafinski) Schneider. Like all of their children, he was
baptized at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Detroit, as an infant.

William became a Lutheran parochial school teacher, instructing in
both German and English at schools in mid Michigan, Illinois, and
Detroit. He received college training from Addison Normal School, in
Addison Illinois. He married Louise Minna Alvina Wickboldt (January
22, 1892 - June 20, 1958) on July 15, 1914 in Chicago.

The young couple accepted a call to Trinity Lutheran Church and School
in Bay County, Michigan and started a family. Their first child, a boy
they named Walter Otto, born April 2, 1916, died at the age of 6 weeks
during circumcision. Their first girl, Eleanor Martha Minnie Augusta
(June 16, 1917), was born there also.

Their next call was to St. Matthew Lutheran Church, back in Chicago.
Born there were Loretta Helen Alma (June 9, 1919) and Ruth Anna
(February 24, 1921 - September 26, 1922). While in Illinois, William
was on the Chicago Debating Team and was a part-time violinist with
the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

Due to poor health, the Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod sent William
to Saint John Lutheran School in the German farm community of Ash
Grove, about 100 miles south of Chicago. William was suffering from
pneumonia, arthritis, and a malaria-like problem that began while he
was student teacher in Missouri. (Eleanor developed pneumonia also but
the young girl quickly recovered). Sons Ralph William (June 7, 1926)
and Arthur Louis (March 11, 1928) were born in Ash Grove.

Eleanor recalls that they lived right in the country, surrounded by
corn fields. There was a teacherage, school, pastor's home, church,
cemetery, and sheds for the horses used by some of the children and
congregation members. There were lots of trees, bushes, flowers, and
lawn. One day, sister Ruth Anna developed a high fever with
convulsions and dad got on the telephone and cranked it like mad. It
was a party line, and that meant listen in for trouble. He said he
needed a doctor and a man said "I'll call Doctor Roberts for you."
First to arrive was a buggy with Mrs. Ekhoff-a church member and
widow. She left her children, hitched up the horse, lit lanterns, and
came across dark roads to be with mother. She was loved by all of us
and a bright spot in our life in Ash Grove. Shortly after, Doc.
Roberts arrived in his buggy. We girls were sent to bed. Next morning
ma and pa woke us to say Ruth had died.

The family moved to Detroit in the 1940s. Residences there included
the Rudolph family homestead on Lansing Street in SW Detroit (where he
help care for his mother) and, lastly, in Allen Park, Michigan. Louise
died in 1958 of natural causes. William died in a 1964 car accident
that also claimed the life of his grandson, Paul Rossow. William and
Louise are interred at Glen Eden Memorial Park.

I am a new member of this group. I am looking to connect with other researchers
who have ancestors in their family tree with the surnames Zastrow, Rosentreter,
and Steinagle. I'm not certain exactly WHERE in Prussia all of those surnames
came from. I know that it's difficult to narrow the search without a specific
area, that's why I'm hoping that someone might direct me to where their
ancestors with the same surnames came from, so I might be able to search in
those areas, too. I DO know that my Zastrow ancestors were from Stettin.

Another reason for my posting today is to share information I recently
received from another list. This is a website that has some historical elements
on Prussia. Anyone interested can go to http://www3.adnc.com/~lynnd/gfaqj.html
I've long wondered about the origins of the area and this site had an answer
that made sense to me along with a bunch of other questions I found interesting:

Q1: What and where was Prussia?
Q2: What about the kings in Germany?
Q3: Who were the Prussian kings?
Q4: Where does the name Prussia come from?
Q5: What were the administrative areas of Prussia in 1895?
Q6: Where do I write for birth certificate for someone born in Prussia?
Q7: How do I find locations and maps for Prussia?
Q8: When were civil registers introduced?
Q9: Where can I get more information on the Prussian provinces?
Q10: Are there emigration records available for Prussian emigrants?
Q11: Is there a listserv for Prussia?
Q12: What are the main genealogical sources for Prussia?
Q13: Where can I find military records?
Q14: Can you describe the Prussian school system before WWII?

I hope that someone might be able to steer me in the right direction, since I
am new to Prussian searches. Maybe someday I might be helpful to other Prussian
researchers.

   Geneologically yours,
   Annette

Annette,
I am fairly new to Prussia research also.  Here are some helpful tips on how to
write the German names that I found on clinton.ilgenweb.net.  You might also
check out the emslander.com site for some of the names you are looking for.
Will try to help you if I can, some of my names are Zeug/Zeng/Zieg, Lutzke,
Schiffman and a few others.

I am a new member of this group. I am looking to connect with other
researchers who have ancestors in their family tree with the surnames Zastrow,
Rosentreter, and Steinagle. I'm not certain exactly WHERE in Prussia all of
those surnames came from. I know that it's difficult to narrow the search
without a specific area, that's why I'm hoping that someone might direct me to
where their ancestors with the same surnames came from, so I might be able to
search in those areas, too. I DO know that my Zastrow ancestors were from
Stettin.

Another reason for my posting today is to share information I recently
received from another list. This is a website that has some historical elements
on Prussia. Anyone interested can go to http://www3. adnc.com/ ~lynnd/gfaqj.
html I've long wondered about the origins of the area and this site had an
answer that made sense to me along with a bunch of other questions I found
interesting:

   Annette

I'm both new to this group and the geneology adventure. I'm
researching my dad's side of the family tree. My dad was always told
that the Nikish's came from Poland. From different censuses I've
found, the country of origin is listed as either Prussia or Germany,
and German being their "mother-tongue".

Vincent Nikish was born around 1846 and came to the U.S.A from
Prussia in 1862. He married Mary (Nikish) in 1876 and they lived in
Minnesota. It's stated on the 1900 US Federal Census that he became
naturalized in 1890. He came to Saskatchewan, Canada in 1910 and
died there in 1932.

Nikish has also been spelled as Nickish.

I've tried searching Immigration lists and Naturalization records but
have come up empty. I don't know if the name Nikish was changed when
he landed in the states. He came when he was in his teens. I don't
know if he had siblings with him or parents.

I just don't know how to make the jump from the states to Prussia.
Please, help! :)

Debbie

Debbie, here are a couple of sites that you might try. I have had a
hard time finding my Zeug/Zeng/Zieg/Zeig and other Prussia ancestors.
I will try to find some other sites for you. Try these and see if
you find anything: http://www.deutsche-auswanderer-datenbank.de/ or
there are some helpful one's on emslanders.com. You can write me at
my e-mail if you wish.

Hi Debbie,

I have run into somewhat of the same problem with a grandfather who came from
Prussia.
Prussia is really Germany, and a part of Germany today. Obviously there is a lot
of history that will explain it, but we do not have the space here.

What I have learned is you will need to know not only the name and dates for
the person, but the exact town they came from or were born. Historical events (
a lot of wars for example) have created a situation where files and information
has been lost or destroyed. The towns and their churchs often kept records which
still exist from that period.

   Try http://www.progenealogists.com/genealogysleuthi.htm for sources, also
http://www.lib.byu.edu/fhc/, also http://www.lib.byu.edu/fhc/, also
http://my.geneanet.org/connexion.php?nologin=1. There are other sources, and
there are sources that require a payment. You have to be careful for those that
require payment. More often then not they 'talk a good line', but have no real
information that is useful especially for Prussia.

Regards,
Tom
