Ooltewah High students plead not guilty in disturbance
By Ryan Harris Staff Writer
LAFAYETTE, Ga. — Six Ooltewah students charged with starting a disturbance after a Georgia high school football game in September pleaded not guilty. Nathan Swafford and Justin Gladden were arraigned Saturday in Walker County State Court. Both declined to comment. The others — Brian Marshall, Jordan Michael Simmons, Justin McReynolds and Joshua Davis — were arraigned last week, a court clerk said. Attorney Dan Ripper, who is representing Mr. Marshall, said the Saturday court appearance was “almost entirely procedural.” “No trials are held on Saturday in Walker County, and there is no benefit or detriment to not appearing in person for the arraignment,” he wrote in an email before the hearing. The high school students are charged with failure to leave school campus and are free on bond. Mr. Marshall and Garrison Caldwell also were charged with inciting to riot. Mr. Caldwell has not surrendered and cannot be extradited for misdemeanors, officials said. Penalties are 12 months in jail and a $1,000 fine, records show. The teenagers will be tried as adults in Georgia. The students were charged after Walker County Sheriff Steve Wilson said they “verbally challenged” football players at Ridgeland High School in Rossville, following a Sept. 14 game between Ridgeland and Ringgold High School. The disturbance appeared to stem from students’ romantic relationship, the sheriff has said. Sheriff Wilson said the fracas led to a separate assault moments later but that the Ooltewah students were not directly involved. E-mail Ryan Harris at rharris@...
