Ezra and list (so there are people here after all),
The rule-bit was copied and pasted from a list of Freecycle rules (possibly the UK one, though I believe it applies everywhere), and "our" came with it, the Freecycle concept is definitely not "mine", and as far as I'm concerned, the person who has been trying (or succeeded?) to patent it is an idiot for doing so. The concept of sharing cannot, and shouldn't, be patented. The capitals came with it, too, so the "bitch" might be the person who typed the rules. Thus far regarding my bitchy attitude, and as for my feminist reservations about "bitch" and "bitchy", well.. maybe another time.
I won't suggest moderating the group myself since I'm leaving Prague in a couple of weeks (and hoping to get rid of my 5 items of "property" here...) and besides, I'm not very fond of batons. I do understand that moderating e-groups can be an ungrateful task, but it still requires the moderator to agree to the main ideas of the group, as well as making sure others are aware of them. I didn't even know you were the moderator, and frankly, it makes the whole situation a tad, well, funny. There's quite a way to go between selling, or swapping (which is slightly better, as it leaves the money out), and sending things to landfill. And would you really chuck things to landfill only because you couldn't sell or swap them?
Over the past eight months, I've given away the contents of an entire flat, accumulated over a period of five years, in one country. I've also managed to furnish an entire squat in another, thanks to Freecycle, and to people who left their old, unused furniture outside and were happy when we knocked on their doors and asked if we could take it away. When I got rid of my stuff, I didn't know about Freecycle, and I'm not sure there was a group where I lived at the time, and it took me months to find good homes to the stuff. In a sense, I swapped things - giving away in one country, receiving in another - but neither giving nor receiving was conditioned on getting anything "back", except for, maybe, a few points to my karma. This is the main thing that seperates Freecycle from free ads websites, I guess. I'd also like to think it can work, even in Prague. I'm sorry you don't feel the same.
