Last night a Portico resident was robbed of her purse by three men outside the
back door on 3rd Street. Her keys, including the key to our buildings and gate
were in the stolen purse. Please take extra care to secure your home and call
911 immediately if you see any strangers or suspicious people on the property.

Our cat has gone missing through our door onto the courtyard. He is
solid black almost long-haired (but not quite) with green eyes and a
gentle disposition (though he is easily frightened). He is missing
one front pointy tooth, and is on twice daily medication for a thyroid
condition.

He does not go outside, and therefore has no collar or shots.

If you have found him, or find him, please call us ASAP at
415-902-6740, or come by 303 4th Street, and I'll bring him home.

As the economy descends into inflation, I find myself wishing I could
shop at one of those big box stores like Costco.  Generally I avoid
them because I don't have anywhere to stash the 50 rolls of toilet
paper or the enormous bag of chicken breasts in my loft.  Every time I
spend extra just because space is at such a premium, however, I
think, "If only I had someone with whom I could split the order!"
Then it occurred to me - perhaps I do.  Would anyone else like to join
with me in a buying collective?  We can at least talk about logistics
and see if it could work.  I am available to do the shopping run
(depending on how often it would happen), if enough people were into it
to make it work both financially and geometrically.  Anyone interested
please e-mail me at skaplanolmsted@... before May 15, 2008.

The long awaited opening of our restaurant is finally right around
the corner! It nearly took an act of Congress but after months and
months of delays (ABC liquor license transfer, building permits,
construction delays and final Health Department approval), our stoves
will finally be fired up for dinner starting Wednesday, March 26th
(exclusively for friends and neighbors).

Our new Jack London Square eatery will offer a seasonally changing
menu that includes a raw crudo list, charcuterie and, artisanal
cheeses in a hip industrial space. Our seasonal menu is
highlighted by big, bold flavors and farm-fresh produce. Meyer
Lemon Risotto is elevated by just-picked Asparagus and Plump Garlic
Prawns; Kurobota Pork Loin is sweetened with Butternut Squash
Custard and Apple-Quince Compote. Our special crudo list also
includes raw inventions such as Day Boat Scallops with Tangerine Oil
and Shaved Fennel; or, Hamachi with Blood Orange, Fresno Pepper, Maui
Onions and Micro Cilantro. To round things off, palate pleasing
desserts from our consulting pastry chef (formerly of Gramercy Park,
NY; French Laundry & Bouchon; and most recently, Citizen Cake)
includes Spicy Ginger Bread with Citrus Cream and Sweet Walnut
Relish; and, for those with a "sweet tooth," a Serious Chocolate
Parfait with Brownie Bites and a Dash of Cocoa Nibs.

Our 100-bottle list is comprised of boutique wines that are both food-
friendly and comprehensive. The classics made a strong appearance
(Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon) as do some less
mainstream varietals (Manto Negro, Assyrtiko). A special focus is
given to half-bottles as well as artisanal sakes.

We're open for dinner from Wednesday to Sunday, starting at 5:30 pm
through 9:30pm on weekdays, through 10:30 pm on weekends.

Nothing would make us happier than to see some familiar and friendly
faces. Please join us soon!

Exciting News for Recyclers:

In response to owners' requests, we now have 4 LARGE RECYCLING BINS, and they
are ALL
MIXED. That means that we do not have to separate recyclables anymore.

Please remember to:
-break down all cardboard boxes to no larger than 3 ft X 3 ft;
- put all recyclables inside the bins, not on top or in front.

Thank You.

Hello Neighbors,
For the last two days, when I go to the dumpster, I see that someone
has kicked in the lid. It's difficult and quite filthy to fix (take it
from me). Has anyone seen someone jumping on the dumpster? It would be
hard to miss it seems. Any information about this would be much
appreciated. I'm at my wits end.

Also styrofoam packing pellets are not recyclable and do not belong in
the recycling containers. They must be put in the dumpster. Somehow I
thought this was common knowledge and/or common sense.

If you see anyone doing either of these things, please ask them to stop.

Hi All,

Two things:

1. Is anything being done to repair the front door at 311? The latch
is broken, therefore leaving the door open unless really slammed shut.
Definitely do not feel comfortable with that being left open.

2. Would anyone be interested in having a general list of repair
companies that service appliances, etc. to what most of us have in our
units? If so, I'm willing to compile the list. In the meantime, does
anyone know of a good company for heater repair? Our heater is not
putting out any heat. I've tested the wall unit which is fine, so the
problem is the electric furnace, I assume.

Thanks!

Dear Neighbors,

Today we received a "Non-Collection Notice" from California Waste Solutions, our
recycling
company. The following reason was given: "Cardboard must be no larger than 3
feet by 3
feet, flattened and tied or taped together."

A handwritten note on the notice said that all recyclables must fit in the bin.
Any overflow
will result in another "Non Collection Notice." In other words, anything that
won't fit into the
bins with the lids closed has to go into the dumpster. Usually, Tony DeJohn
graciously goes
out and throws the overflow into the dumpster before the pick-up. We appreciate
this but we
can't expect him to do this every week (He has a day job, too). Please do your
part.

StopWaste.org has a recycling wizard that will help you find place to drop off
recyclables,
some close by. http://www.stopwaste.org/home/index.asp?page=70

Thank you very much.

Ground broken for huge public retail market at Jack London Square
George Raine, Chronicle Staff Writer

Oakland moved a step closer to realizing a major public retail market
Monday when city officials, developers and others gathered for a
groundbreaking ceremony for the 170,000-square-foot building at Jack
London Square.
The centerpiece of the 1 million-square-foot Jack London Square
redevelopment will be a place of local produce, artisanal foods,
fishmongers and bakers and more - perhaps as many as 70 vendors in all.
The concept is more than a pretty artist's rendering that the developer of
the Jack London Square redevelopment, Ellis Partners LLC, first made in
2003 or 2004. (The dates start to run together in the minds of people
engaged in a seven-year planning and permit process.) Ellis Partners wants
the public market to be the largest of its kind on the West Coast.
Yes, it will be nod to the Bay Area's sustainable food movement and
cuisine culture, but the idea to create a sense of commerce and place, as
well.
"A lot of things in the real estate and development world appear to be
fads," said Hal Ellis, the managing principal of Ellis Partners. "Some of
them are. This is not. This is a well-established trend that we think has
a lot of legs. And this is an opportunity for a center of that activity to
have a place of expression. Oakland and the East Bay is known throughout
the country for its culinary arts and its emphasis on sustainable
agriculture, and this capitalizes on that."
Guideposts for the developers are the Pike Place Market in Seattle and the
Granville market in Vancouver, British Columbia.
"We're not competitive with the Ferry Plaza in San Francisco. We view
ourselves as being additive to it," said James Falaschi, the president of
Transbay Holdings Co., a partner in the project with Ellis Partners.
The groundbreaking was only ceremonial because the land is already being
prepared for the building that will house the market between Harrison and
Webster at Water Street in Jack London Square.
The building will be six stories, with the market, local produce,
artisanal foods with meat and fish halls on the first floor. It will house
ethnic bistros and fine dining on the second floor; culinary businesses on
the third floor; and class A office space above.
The developers expect the Jack London Market to be open for business in
early 2009.
It is included in the first phase of construction that will include four
mixed-use buildings totaling 250,000 square feet. The others are a
31,200-square-foot retail and office building adjacent to Oakland's ferry
terminus, a 1,086-car parking garage and a 10,000-square-foot retail shops
building adjacent to the Barnes & Noble store.
Future phases of construction total another 500,000 square feet and
include two additional midsize office and retail buildings. The project
also includes a joint venture with Joie de Vivre Hospitality to purchase,
remodel and operate the Waterfront Plaza Hotel on the square.
In addition, the developers are in talks with the Westin Hotels and
Resorts about a new 250-room hotel with conference facilities on the
eastern edge of the 11-block-long project, although there is no commitment
for it.
In all, the Jack London Square project is a $400 million endeavor, a
legacy development for Ellis Partners which, as a string of elected
officials noted, are risk-takers who are betting on Oakland and the East
Bay.
In the past five years, there has been a significant amount of capital
investment in downtown Oakland, including condominiums and other
residential projects, said Jim Ellis of Ellis Partners.
But the amount of retail square footage per capita in Oakland and the
inner East Bay is extremely low compared with other major metropolitan
areas, said Ellis.
"For people living in Oakland and surrounding communities, they have
limited options for dining, shopping and recreating," Ellis said.
"They venture through the tunnel to Walnut Creek or into San Francisco,
and we think we have an excellent opportunity to create a new urban infill
project that will give people an option of staying in town - including
coming to a major waterfront world-class public market."
Jim Ellis' father, Hal Ellis, was a co-founder of one of the nation's
largest diversified real estate firms, Grubb & Ellis Co. He served as its
chairman and chief executive until 1992. His projects have included
Oakland's City Center at 14th and Broadway and Emery Tech on Hollis Street
in Emeryville.
Other projects include office buildings in San Francisco, Hacienda Plaza
in Pleasanton and Town & Country Village in Palo Alto.
Falaschi, the co-developer, was a partner in a family-owned company that
built multiple locations for Safeway Stores, Prudential Life Insurance and
Pacific Telephone, among other clients, throughout Northern California.
A national pension fund, the National Electrical Benefit Fund, is
participating in the financing, with Ellis Partners, Falaschi and a CarVal
Investors' managed account.
The National Electrical Benefit Fund was created by the International
Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and the National Electrical Contractors
Association. The developers secured debt financing from Bank of America to
round out the project financing.

Firm snaps up boutique hotels - By George Avalos, BUSINESS WRITER

BOUTIQUE HOTELS in the East Bay have caught the eye of investors who are betting that the region's economy is robust enough to avoid a major downturn. The Waterfront Plaza Hotel, located in Oakland's Jack London Square, and the Hotel Durant, on the south side of the UC-Berkeley campus, have been snapped up by a Bay Area hotel company.  View Full Story

I've noticed too ...someone has been going through the trash.  I have an idea but I haven't been home to execute it.
The dumpster has a lock mode that supports a pad lock. I plan to get a pad lock that uses the common key. The only detail I have not resolved is how the garbage men can empty the dumpster.
I'll get the plan executed this weekend.
