Welcome to new and relatively new members,

Please tell us a little bit about yourself. What are your interests? What do you hope to learn from our member base? How can you contribute to make Pop-Pop the best group that it can be?

THANKS,

Pete

I am 32 and have a small landscaping business in central Texas. I am a
collector, but, while most collect things, I collect hobbies. I have a
substantial bonsai collection and enjoy building with wood, steel, and recently
soft metals. I find that I don't have the patience to build things as pretty as
a lot of what I see here but you all inspire me.

Have already learned a good bit from your database and enjoy the pics of
everyone's work, can't say i can contribute much at this time but hope to get
back to my hobbies soon. after building several boat engines i discovered
sterling engines and was in the middle of a build when I had to move myself an
my business and that has taken all my time.

Yes they are! Charles used a Proex Inc. casserole container #MW916-P from his local grocery store.

The Pop-Pop Tug is Charles Clark's design. He has offered to consult with anyone wanting to make a Tug. He would prefer that you either design & construct your own engine or buy one that is commercially available.

With Charles's approval I am in the process of creating a drawing package for the Tug in CAD. I plan to post a PDF copy when completed. If interested please contact me. If there is enough interest I will move the packet up on my "To Do" list.

I change the Group photo and added several of the CAD work on the Tug.

I live in SE Michigan and stumbled on pop-pop boats as I was stumbling around on the internet.

What a cool idea! I have not had much time to play with this stuff lately - building a brewing up in the Soo - but have put together a couple of boat that have kind-of sort-of worked.

I need to spend more time to figure out what I am doing wrong. I suspect that I will find the answers on this site - when I get a minute to look.

I hope to have a fleet of these thing floating around Higgons Lake this summer during a family gathering.

Yes, my local market uses the trays to sell crabcakes. They are polyethylene
plastic (recycle #5). They handle candle heat well, but glues do not stick very
well. If you ever use one for a boat hull, coat the inside with a layer of
automobile wax. It helps when cleaning up any dripped candle wax.

Daryl & Jean-Yves,

These preditors ride the coat tails of E-mail addresses as Jean-Yves said. It's been my experience that People who don't have active security software and those who are into the world of "forwarding" are generally the spammer's target. Even if you don't forward a lot of Email messages it's a good habit to delete ALL addresses from the original message and use "Bcc" option for listing the people you are E-mailing to. "Bcc" makes all addresses except yours blind on the receiving end.

There is no real way to stop spammers as they seem to be one step ahead of everyone else. It's a shame that they are wasting their talent! We can all minimize the Spam by being more diligent in how we use our E-mail accounts.

I checked the group settings, and apparently it was set so that "anybody" (not
just group members) can post messages. I have changed this now so that only
group members can post. I have also set it so that messages posted by new
members (anybody who joins the group after today) must be approved by one of the
moderators before they go live to the group. When a new members posts a
legitimate message, we'll change their individual settings so that they are no
longer moderated. Spammers of course will get the boot. This is how I do it on
a couple of my other Yahoo groups, and it has worked well so far.

Hi Wayne.
If you want to build a diaphragm engine you can look on this site at "Files",
then "pop-pop la page de Jean-Yves". In this folder the first file should help
you.
There are also many other sites on Internet where you can find instructions for
coil engines and diaphragm engines.

Hello all,

I live in the Asia-Pacific region and recently came across these amazingly
simple, yet wonderful variant of the pop-pop-steamboats, the ones that use the
copper coil engines. My friends and I have decided to compete with each other in
regards to these boats, with 2 rounds, based on speed and then the boat's
ability to carry weights, namely 20g ones before it sinks and I would like to
learn from the experts here on boat construction. I've seen some designs of the
put-put boats that are streamlined, allowing for greater speed, and would like
to learn a lot more.

I hope to adopt this as a life-long hobby after the competition as I happen to
live near a lake.

Thanks and regards,
Sajer

I should have gone in an done the same. I have no prior experience with "Yahoo

settings in the safe mode. Acouple of years ago one of the moderators deleted
the group. When it was brought back up all of the settings may have been set to
default. Anyway, THANKS>

Hi Sajer,

For some reason or other, both types have been called pop-pop boats. Go to the
links section for a link to Daryl's video channel to see boats with engines of
both types, those that pop, and those that just gurgle.

Hi Old Frank,

Thanks a lot for the pointing out that section to me, didn't really explore that area since most of my other groups do not utilize it. I've watched a few of Daryl's videos and they are indeed useful. I'm now reading Dr. Guus Flogel's instructions from Slater Harrison's site. Seems like I should be on the way to constructing my first  pop-pop boat!

Thanks again,

Also check out the Files section of the group, I posted a PDF in there of Len
Stevens' article "Pulse Projection" from Model Boats Magazine, where he explores
the use of square-section tube in his experiments with coiled-tube pop-pops. My
little wooden pop-pop "Popflea" (pics in the Photos section of the group) was
inspired by this article.

Been working on ways to make good quality candles for use in the commercial pop
pop boats. I've always used olive oil in my boats, but find that olive oil is a
bit messy and complex for those who I give the boats to. The mix of olive oil
and olive oil soot makes a high grade prison tattoo ink. The candles supplied
with the boats are usually poor quality, and when gone the boats are probably
abandoned. I figure if I supply some good working low mess candles with the
boats, the boats will provide more fun and entertainment.

Good for you.

When the original candles are gone I use birthday
cake candles. With a large family getting ever
older I have a never-ending supply of part-burned
ones. The ones that relight themselves are more
reliable.

It won't work with all boats, but what I have done
in small tinplate Indian boats is this.
- find a tea-lamp candle with a loose wick
tethered to a metal plate
- withdraw the loose wick and fix it in the bottom
of the hull in the best place for the flame
- break the wax from the candle into small pieces
- float the hull in simmering water
- add the wax pieces to the hull gradually until
the boat is floating comfortably with a pool of
molten wax in the hull
- turn off the heat to let the wax set.
- use the boat as normal with its new long-life
candle.
- remelt adding wax, and a new wick if necessary,
once the pool of wax stops working well

You can cut rudders out of thick aluminum foil (like disposible pie pan and
such) and attach them with a little drop of low temp hot glue. Soft enough to
adjust but not easily damaged. The hot glue can be easily peeled off of the boat
when needed.
