Subject: The Royal Navy plans to scrap HMS Endurance
jhyoule
Send Email Send Email

The Portsmouth News (England) carried a story on Wednesday 8th September 2010
stating that the Royal Navy plans to scrap the ice patrol vessel HMS Endurance
badly damaged in an incident in the Magellan Strait in December 2008 and replace
her by "an icebreaker" leased or bought from Norway. A decision is expected in
the coming weeks. The story was taken up the following day by the Daily Mirror
(England). The replacement ship is expected to leave Portsmouth, England, in
Spring 2011 for an 18 month tour.

Here are the links:

http://www.portsmouth.co.uk/newshome/HMS-Endurance-to-be-replaced.6519109.jp

http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/top-stories/2010/09/09/navy-scrap-ice-breaker-hms-e\
ndurance-115875-22547884/

The British Armed Forces are facing massive cuts in expenditure so any
replacement is to be welcomed.

The current HMS Endurance started life as the Polar Circle which was bought by
the Royal Navy in 1991/2 to replace the first HMS Endurance, ex. Anita Dan,
which played a prominent role before and during the Faklands Conflict (March to
June 1982).

The ships were named after the Endurance, Sir Ernest Shackleton's ship that sank
in the Weddell Sea in October 1915.

More news in due course.

Best wishes,

John Youle

Hi Gilles,

Where are you from? is it Québec City or the Province of Québec?

This week-end there is a national show Royale*2011*Royal in Dorval,
near Montréal. Are you going?

I am exhibiting 7 frames : "Territorial Claims in Antarctica" - "Les
revendications territoriales en Antarctique"
Unfortunetely, it is the only exhibit in polar philately.
If you decide to come, ask for me at the 'Welcoming Table'

Cordiales salutations,

Hi Klaus!
Looking for a special date? The envelopes of the base Corvette Uruguay are very
rare (and sought) and there are a few dates, in early 1981 sealed (and applied a
special cachet) a few of them that stood since 1978 and the rest returned to
Buenos Aires unsealed . But in 1980 brought some pieces were sealed by the
icebreaker ARA Almirante Irizar. Finally, the only time you could send mail
philatelists was in the 1981/82 season, all that campaign envelopes are dated
January 25, 1982. Then came the Falklands War and the destruction of the base
...
I have to offer some of the 1982 campaign, if you're interested I can send the
image of the other pieces if you're interested.
Best regards
Rodrigo

Hi guys,

I'm just wondering if or when the American Society of Polar Philatelists plans
to upgrade its website, www.polarphilatelists.org. The existing website hasn't
been upgraded in years. Frankly, it's not that easy to navigate or that pleasing
to the eye. I think you'd attract more members if it was upgraded. Thanks for

I didn't mean to cast aspersions on the quality of the content in the group. In
fact, I went back through the archives reading the older posts and learned a lot

I've also received several nice 'welcome messages' from group members and I

Some time over the Christmas holiday, I plan to dig into my B.A.T. stuff to make

I look forward to participating in the group

One major source is the auctions of the American Society of Polar Philatelists
(ASPP). These appear from time to time in the publication "Ice Cap News".. The
website is www.polarphilatelists.org.
This journal also has a CD of past issues to help for your search.
Of course items show up on eBay too.

Hope that helps.

Hey Murray, glad to see you're still here! I was wondering what had happened to
the list. I’ve been silent because I really haven't had anything much to say
polar-wize. But that doesn't mean I've totally lost interest!

The recent messages got me to thinking that one of the things I've missed the
past few Christmases has been Christmas Greetings from list members all over the
US, Canada, Europe, and Aus. & NZ, that would appear in inboxes Christmas Eve
and Christmas morning. It would be nice to revive that tradition and I, for one,
plan to send greetings to all on the list from here on the Carolina Coast in the
US Christmas morning.

Hope some of the other members who used to post regularly to the list up until a
few years back are still around!

Best to all,
Barbara Rhodes

Hello to Murray and Barbara, and to newcomer Kirk.

I think it bears a comment as to the group being quiet.  I don't disagree, but
will add that actually, I've had plenty to say, but haven't said anything for
years. You will see posts from me up until a few years ago. At that time, I had
a less than-pleasurable exchange with an unnamed person, and was disrespected,
but it had nothing to do with the moderator or list-owner.  I post my leads for
cover sendings, etc. on Twitter now.

I agree with Barbara in saying that I too, miss the contacts (of a friendly
nature) of polar philately.

Will send Season's Greetings to all, with the hope that perhaps we (the group)
can all start anew, and inject a dose of revitalization into the group. I'm
willing.  I would respectfully suggest that diversity of interests is actually
the key; meaning that if someone posts information on a certain topic that is
specifically or broadly related to polar philately, leave it alone.  If you are
not interested in French Antarctic Territories, for instance, someone else on
the list may be. Glance at it and go on.  Don't grouse and complain about there
being too many posts or that you already get that information elsewhere, move
along.  Just my opinion.

Happy Collecting!

Here's an excerpt from the latest USAP participant guide:

Philatelists may obtain a maximum of two covers (self-addressed stamped
envelopes) a year by writing to the postal clerks (addresses below) at the three
year-round U.S. Antarctic stations.

	 • ◗ No more than two covers per person per station per year.

	 • ◗ Covers will be processed for personal (that is, noncommercial) use of

individuals only.

	 • ◗ U.S. correspondents use domestic first-class postage for the APO
addresses (below) and international first-class or air mail postage for the
Palmer Station address.

	 • ◗ Non-U.S. correspondents use international first-class or airmail
postage.

Philatelic Mail Clerk
McMurdo Station, Antarctica PSC 469
APO AP 96599-1035

Philatelic Mail Clerk
Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station, Antarctica
PSC 468 Box 400
APO AP 96598

With the change in NSF support contractors from Raytheon to Lockheed-Martin,
Palmer Station has a new agent in Punta Arenas, the old address listed in the
participant guide is no longer valid, and I don't believe they receive mail of
any sort there at present. But I do know that the postal clerk at South Pole
this austral summer season (through the beginning of February) is once again
friend Scott Smith, whom many here may remember.

It would be wonderful to see the group revitalized. I don't know what
happened before - I got busy on other projects for a few years, and
philately was one of the hobbies that got shelved, the group being part of
that.

to Ontario this year in mid Sept. What part of the Territory are you living in?

Kevin

It would be wonderful to see the group revitalized. I don't know what
happened before - I got busy on other projects for a few years, and
philately was one of the hobbies that got shelved, the group being part of
that.

From the Yukon Territory where the temperature has moderated to only -27C,
Merry Christmas to those of you still here, and I wish you all the best for
2013.

Murray

Dear fellow Polar Enthusiasts, While this group has been extremely quiet for a
couple of years this does not mean that Polar Philately is not alive and well
throughout the world. I have just completed my 16th year as editor of Polar
Post, the newsletter of the Polar Postal History Society of GB and we are
currently celebrating our Diamond Jubilee. We have around 250 members. I am also
still a member of the ASPP (#2614) and will reach 30 years of membership in
2014. The ASPP have just over 200 members. Society auctions and Ebay are perhaps
the most economical way of buying modern stamps and covers. If stamps are still
on general sale by the post offices the various Philatelic Bureaux around the
world usually sell at face value PLUS a handling charge. The large auction
houses tend to put modern material (anything under 50 years old) into bulk lots
and thus you need to be willing to bid 100s of US$ for lots. As regards the
original email from Kevin which appears to have awoken us from our slumbers, I
now mainly collect only BAT (British Antarctic Territory) and South Georgia as
well as Antarctic base postmarks. Current BAT stamps are on sale at the
Philatelic Bureau in Stanley, Falkland Islands. Currently that is just the 2011
and 2012 issues (2012 issues appeared on 21st December). I do not have much in
the way of earlier BAT mint stamps because I use them each year for postage on
the covers I send down. If Kevin contacts me directly at jyoule@... I can
send some links. I believe the postings of this group are stripped of
attachments and links and I do not want to advertise by mentioning particular
dealers. I hope to be in Rockaway, New Jersey (not Queens, NY) again in 2013
visiting my brother. This year we all went off for a 4 week dream holiday in New
Zealand. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all of you. Here in Munich,
Germany, we are having a winter heat wave caused by a weather condition known as
the Föhn. It may hit around 65°F (18°C) today. John H. Youle,Munich,
