I am a Shirase collector
I have an old postcard from the Shirase expedition, a picture postcard of the
ship, sold at the time as a fundraiser for a missionary group.
The message on the back talks about the expedition.
That's all I have that's from the expedition itself.
I think I might have it on a powerpoint, and if I do, I will both of you a copy.

Always interested in anything about Shirase and his expeditions.

As I'm sure many of you have noticed, especially those who are participating in
Auction 92, you have yet to see invoices or lots, and it's now been 4 weeks
since the auction closed. I have made progress in pulling together the shipments
and generating the invoices. My progress has been slowed by a full time job (for
which I've had to travel lately), and a house full of three teenagers, two dogs,
a wife and a bird), not to mention a few other volunteer activities. It's been
difficult finding the uninterrupted blocks of time I need to accurately complete
filling all the winning shipments, tracking payments and finally dispersing
proceeds to our consignors.

I plan on making time this coming weekend for a lot of work on the auction, and
hope to have most work completed, and all invoices and many shipments out by the
end of this month. If you have any questions, or special requests (if you need
material won for an exhibit and you need it soon), please let me know.

As always, thanks for your patience and participation. Best Regards/

As always, thank you all for your patience and adherence to bidding
increments! The prices realized for ASPP Auction 92 are now available online at
http://www.chrisjen ner.org/ASPP/ asppauc92r. htm.

Please bear in mind the following when using prices realized to determine
whether you won a particular lot:

- Bids not complying to bidding increments are lowered to the next valid bidding
increment, e.g. $5.75 is lowered to $5.50, $16.50 is lowered to $16, $25 is
lowered to $24.

- Tie bids go to the earliest bidder.

- Lots are sold at a slight advance over the second highest bid.

We had our best turnout in a while in Auction 92, selling over 90% of the 256
lots offered. Thank you to all who participated.

Please note that I hope to begin sending electronic invoices out this week to
those with email addresses. However, due to business travel, I will not be able
to begin shipping lots out till approximately August 5th.

Thank you again for your participation and patience! Best Regards/

-- Chris

Dear all,

I very much regret to inform you that Geoffrey Barber has just telephoned me to
say that Margery Wharton died today 17th September after a long illness. Robert
McMillan had travelled south and managed to see her today before she died. I
understand from Geoffrey that Robert is still in Bexhill-on-Sea/Hastings.

For those not in the "know" this will come as a bit of a shock. Margery knew
that she only had several months left to live back in December 2007 and has
continued almost up to her passing away to write and produce articles for both
the FIPSG and the PPHSGB. It was her wish that the true nature of her illness
remain confidential and thus a few of us who knew her true condition have had to
avoid telling the full truth for the past 8 months.

Sadly her last article for the PPHSGB was never finished.

Margery's book on Antarctic Expedition Postcards with the recently published
update and her recent update of Heyburn's book on Postcards of the Falkland
Islands will ensure that her name lives on.

A fitting tribute to Margery will be published in the December issue of Polar
Post and I know that the FIPSG will also publish a fitting tribute to her in the
December issue of Upland Goose.

Margery specifically requested in an email to me sent in August this year that
no mention should be made of her illnesses in her Obituary. Therefore please
bear this in mind when sending in written tributes for publicatrion in either
Upland Goose or Polar Post.

John:

Thanks for the heads-up. You may recall that about a year ago I was trying
to find out what Margery's date of birth was so that I could induct her into
the OAEA as a Regular Life Member. I never did find out so inducting her is
still on my "things to do" list.

In her correspondence with me she declined to join the OAEA because she knew
that she had only about a year to live. That is when I decided to induct
her. Now I will only be able to bestow a Commemorative Membership in her name.

If you happen to see an obit that mentions her age and other details I would
appreciate it if you would send it to me.

Also if it is not too much trouble could you give me the name and address of
her NOK so that I can send Margery's OAEA Commemorative Membership
certificate and other items to that person.

I very much regret to inform you that Geoffrey Barber has just telephoned me
to say that Margery Wharton died today 17th September after a long illness.
Robert McMillan had travelled south and managed to see her today before she
died. I understand from Geoffrey that Robert is still in
Bexhill-on-Sea/Hastings.

For those not in the "know" this will come as a bit of a shock. Margery knew
that she only had several months left to live back in December 2007 and has
continued almost up to her passing away to write and produce articles for
both the FIPSG and the PPHSGB. It was her wish that the true nature of her
illness remain confidential and thus a few of us who knew her true condition
have
had to avoid telling the full truth for the past 8 months.

Sadly her last article for the PPHSGB was never finished.

Margery's book on Antarctic Expedition Postcards with the recently published
update and her recent update of Heyburn's book on Postcards of the Falkland
Islands will ensure that her name lives on.

A fitting tribute to Margery will be published in the December issue of
Polar Post and I know that the FIPSG will also publish a fitting tribute to her
in the December issue of Upland Goose.

Margery specifically requested in an email to me sent in August this year
that no mention should be made of her illnesses in her Obituary. Therefore
please bear this in mind when sending in written tributes for publicatrion in
either Upland Goose or Polar Post.

Greetings All

I was sorry to hear of the passing of Margery Wharton. While I did not know her
personally, I am sure she was a valuable contributor to Polar philately and
philately in general.

My sincere condolences go out to her family and friends.

My name is Tom Henderson. I am webmaster of The Antarctican Society,
www.antarctican.org. I thought you might like to know that I have
recently posted over 50 philatelic covers from the IGY in Antarctica
in our Philatelic Corner (link is currently on the home page). These
are from the collection of Dr. Paul C. Dalrymple, himself a veteran of
the IGY and subsequent years in the Antarctic. These are unique
covers, most of them signed by station leaders and science leaders.
The "crown jewel" is a cover from the 1957-58 British Commonwealth
Transantarctic Expedition signed by every member of the Expedition,
including Sir Edmund Hillary and Sir Vivian Fuchs. The Philatelic
Corner is accessible by the public.

Hi all,

It's been a while since I commented on this site. I just wanted to
say that this year I joined the American Society of Polar
Philatelists and the Polar Postal History Society of Great Britain
and whole-heartedly recommend both groups to anyone interested in the
polar philately. The journals from both societies have made for
interesting reading for me. Last month I had planned on attending the
APPS convention in King of Prussia, Pa. but unfortunately work got in
the way. I work as the managing editor of the Web site of a TV
station in Salisbury, Maryland. There were big concerns that Tropical
Hanna was going to hit us hard that weekend so I ended up having to
work. Come to find out, Hanna ended up being a non-event for the most
part. I'm glad it ended up that way but it's a real shame I had to
miss the convention. Nevertheless, I did get to read about the
convention in the latest edition of the Ice Cap News. It sounds like
it was a success. One particular item caught my attention: the
forthcoming publication of the "Essence of Polar Philately." I wonder
if orders are being taken for reserve copies. Also, I do hope the
book will address the topic of laying out a polar philately
collection. It's one of the big challenges I'm facing with mine. I'm
always trying to figure out unique ways to display my stamp and
postal history collection. But I can say the book will surely be a
vital part of any polar philatelist's library and its publication
will be none too soon. This really is a fascinating field that I
didn't get so interested in until about a couple years back. I guess
it took me long enough. I'm 36 now and have been a philatelist for
more than 25 years.

Dear List members, Can any of you help with the following query?
Father Edwards who produces postcards in a Pole and Tristan Da Cunha series
wants to know if the "R.V. Ob" ever visited The Falkland Islands, Tristan Da
Cunha, South Georgia or a British Antarctic Base. What we know is that the ship
was used for the 1st to 18th and 20th Soviet Antarctic Expeditions 1956-1976 and
at the end of the first expedition in 1956 visited Macquarie Island and
Wellington, New Zealand. So far no one has been able to come up with any
information about visits to other (non-Soviet) Antarctic Stations, The Falkland
Islands, Tristan Da Cunha, or South Georgia. Google has also let me down this
time! Do you any of you have any further information? My feeling is that a visit
to any of the British locations is unlikely given the "Cold War" period during
which the ship operated and the location of the Soviet Antarctic bases. Yours
sincerely, John H. Youle,Editor of Polar Post for the Polar Postal History
