Hello, I just joined the group..

You may know me from other groups but if not I will introduce myself
briefly. I am Michael Dodd.. otherwise know as cddstamps.

I started reading about Polar expedictions last year.. and reading
The Last Explorer all about Hubert Wilkins... ok nothing to do
with stamps, but I am also interested in flight and aviation and
there is the link to Wilkins. Also a year or so ago I started to
design and produce flight covers. I made four so far - limited
editions and not that frequent as you can tell. The most recent,
because of an opportunity I had, is associated with the only Qantas
flight to the Antartic for a this New Years eve just past. Longest
domestic flight in the world, as regarded by many depending on how
long they spend sightseeing down there. departed Melbourne 31 Dec
arrived back to Melbourne ( no stop of course!!!) on 1st Jan.

Anyway, if you are interested I produced 44 flight covers for the
flight - details are at http://www.cddstamps.com/antarctic.htm you
might at least enjoy looking at them. some signed by all four
pilots, some signed by all 18 cabin crew.. and those "unsigned" were
actually certified as flown by one of the Pilots.

I'll be posting pictures taken from the fliight soon as well.

Thank you.. I look forward to reading more from this board and
incresing my Polar knowledge, and polar philatelic knowledge.

Best wishes.. Michael http://www.cddstamps and

Kevin and all...

In case you haven't found it, there are many historical photos and MANY shots of
covers from various years on this page of the Russian "Antarctic Research and
Investigation Program":

http://www.aari.aq/default_en.html

Scroll down in the left sidebar to the "photos" heading and check out the "AARI
Photo
Gallery" and the "Antarctic Philately" link.

A couple of other links...here is my page on the Russian traverse to South Pole
in
1959-60: http://www.southpolestation.com/trivia/igy1/dralkin1.html

And more recently (like now!) the Norwegian-US Scientific Traverse visited the
Pole
of Inaccessibility (POI) which was first reached by the Russians during IGY.
Here is
their historical page (which I helped them with) on the Russian venture (which I
helped them with):

http://traverse.npolar.no/historical-traverses/pole-of-inaccessibility/

and a couple of links describing the current visit:
http://traverse.npolar.no/nor-usa-traverse-celebrates-new-year2019s-day-at-pole-\
of-inaccessibility/

Diary entry page (check out 31 December and later)

Hi,

I've been a philatelist for many years now and one of the topics that's
starting to intrigue me is that of polar philately in general. I
noticed there's a Society of Polar Philatelists. I think it costs about
$22 a year to be a member. Are there any members of this list who are
also members of the SPP? Is it worth joining? Also, are there any kinds
of checklists available for polar philatelists? For example, the
American Topical Association publishes checklists for a variety of
topics. I was just wondering how some of you lay out your collections
as polar philately can be a rather broad collecting topic.

By the way, I also collect trains on stamps as well as U.S.,
Philippines and Ukraine. And any and all items of postal history may
end up in my collection as well.

An organization dedicated to the collecting and history of the polar regions is
the American Society of Polar Philatelist (ASPP). The website is at:

http://www.polarphilatelists.org/

Membership information as well as polar history can be found at this site.

The British also have a similar organization.

Hi Kyle,

Yes, several ASPP members are on this email list. And
yes, ASPP is definitely worth joining. Of course, I'm
somewhat biased, I'm the current president of ASPP. We
put out an award winning journal called Ice Cap News
quarterly, and run 2 - 3 mail auctions of polar
philatelic material each year.

An application for membership is here:
http://www.polarphilatelists.org/join-1.htm and we
have categorized polar collecting interests here:
http://www.polarphilatelists.org/join-2.htm

Please consider joining is! Best Regards/

Thanks Chris,

I'll look into joining your group. If I'm not mistaken, I believe
your group will be holding a meeting at the Philadelphia National
Stamp Exhibition in September. I'd like to attend. I live on the
Eastern Shore of Maryland so it will take me about three hours
driving to get to King of Prussia. My wife won't mind going either
since the King of Prussia Mall is nearby!

Here's a text story I found about this as well:
http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2008/01/11/2136943.htm?
section=australia

The news story didn't make any mention on how this would impact
Antarctic postal operations but we would have to assume that it will
have some sort of effect. At the very least I'd imagine we'll see an
increase in Antarctic air mail.

What does the rest of the group think?

Dear LIST,
I hope not whole members in Polar Expeditions and perhaps somebody can help.
So I'm looking for envelopes from :

Last year in April when the Argentine icebreaker "Almirante IRIZAR" had an
accident and was destroyed by fire the Argentine governement rented the Russian
icebreaker "Vasily Golovnin" in order to take over the service of "IRIZAR". The
ship desserved some Argentine bases like : Orcadas, Esperamza, Marambio and
San-Martin and perhaps from Ushuaia. I'm interested one envelope from each
point. Of course if it's possible.
In exchange I can offer Russian Antarctic and Arctic materials include
drifting stations "North Pole"
   Kind regards from SPb.

Navy Post to commemorate International Polar Year (IPY) and to be used
by mentioned ship from campaign 2006-2007; until August 2007. No one
piece like this was found on any naval post office - ship was
approximately two months with legal and technical inspections after
return to Puerto Belgrano Naval Base. In April 2007 - towed by ARA
Olivieri and another tug. On board post office is the administrative
detail general office - mentioned office suffered very high heat and
smoke but never direct flames.  Fire burnt on deck below compartment;
and for this reason, all material was melted. Beneath a pile of
melted material a metallic-wooden box was found in August 2007 in the
general cleaning - enclosed was found present piece and others - many
few recovered. they run delayed to destination and for that "incendio"
"fire" is written on cover to explain the late date of delivery - some
navy post without scheduled time of elevation is delivered at the end
of campaign when ship returns to Buenos Aires - this is normal for
many ship campaigns - it still has some smoke smell - it is an unique
piece. Included is a photo of Irizar at Ushuaia Bay. US$125.00

All prices plus postage.

Sorry I took so long to respond to this one, but I've been off working. I've
always had a hard time finding a good list of all Antarctic topical issues
so I started putting together my own. It's slightly out of date since I
worked on it around 2001, and a lot of countries have been issuing Antarctic
themed stamps since then. Here's my list. It would great if anyone could add
to it.

Hello everyone

I am a long time cover collector(manned space program)but fairly new
to collecting polar philately. I have become very interested in polar
philately and am trying to learn as much about the subject as possible.

I have a question for the group.Does anyone have a cover in their
collection that has been carried and cancelled at both 90 degrees
north and 90 degrees south(North Pole and South Pole)? Are these types
of covers rare or are they easily obtainable from dealers? I would
appreciate any info on this question and look forward to learning more
about both polar regions and this hobby.
