WEBSITES ANNOUNCE NEW ALLIANCE - THE MEXICO NETWORK
>> http://www.mexiconetwork.info
MEXICO NETWORK [DECEMBER 25, 2001] -- Three of Mexico's most important
content providers -- Mexico Connect, Mexicanwave and Planeta.com --
announce a unique collaboration that spans the globe and focuses attention
squarely on Mexico.
The newly launched Mexico Network will provide an in-depth look at Mexico,
not only as a destination but as a nation which holds an important place in
world economy and culture. While retaining their own distinct identities,
the three member websites will work together to promote key themes of
Education, Journalism and Travel. The Mexico Network will support efforts
which "bridge the digital divide," thereby contributing to a better
understanding of Mexico.
The three founding websites of The Mexico Network are some of the most well
established and most popular English-language portals. Planeta.com debuted
in 1995 and has won numerous awards, including the first "Lente de Plata"
presented to a website by SECTUR, Mexico's tourism secretariat.
Award-winning Mexico Connect began in 1996 and is a favored hub for the
foreign expat community in Mexico. "Mexicanwave launched in 2000 and was
recently voted one of the "Top 10 Cool Travel Sites" by The Sunday Times
(London)."
All three websites will cross-reference each other's content, share future
plans, exchange skills and determine how best to build on their business
relationships for mutual benefit.
Steve Bridger, Director of UK-based Mexicanwave, describes the new venture
as a significant commitment: "We already share a deep passion for Mexico,so
it seems sensible to work together to see if we can deliver an even better
service to our readership. To our knowledge it is unique for websites to
collaborate in this way."
"There is a clear hunger for quality information about Mexico," notes David
McLaughlin, director of Mexico-based Mexico Connect. "Our combined monthly
readership is currently approaching 1,000,000. The numbers are going up!
People want to learn all they can about Mexico."
"The Web is definitely taking off in Mexico," states Ron Mader, Director of
Planeta.com operations in both Mexico and the United States. "One of the
goals of The Mexico Network is to support efforts which train professionals
in Mexico on how to use the Web more effectively."
The Mexico Network will also harness the Internet to consolidate online
information resources for education, and support the efforts of Mexican
teachers and students to communicate with their peers around the globe.
** STATE PROFILES **
A key target audience are Media and Travel Professionals who have made the
member websites popular. The first coordinated project of The Mexico Network
will be the distribution of State Profiles, beginning with Oaxaca, Veracruz
and Colima.
State and Regional Profiles include links to recommended online resources
and up-to-date contact information for tourism professionals. Oaxaca Profile
will be distributed on January 21st, 2002. Subsequent profiles will be
delivered monthly.
"We've been linking to each other's websites for several years, but never in
such a coordinated fashion," said Ron Mader. "Collaboration insures that
our information is more accurate and benefits everyone."

Greetings -
I would like to call your attention to the "Mexico: Adventures in Nature"
guidebook. I have some news to report.
A month ago Avalon/John Muir Publications announced that they are
discontinuing the entire "Adventures in Nature" guidebook series.
This announcement was unexpected but I'm not very sad. I now have full
copyright of the book and I am exploring various options.
Plus, this past month Planeta.com hosted the Media, the Environment and
Tourism Conference <http://www.planeta.com/ecotravel/period/metevent.html>.
The timing was fortuitous and shed some light on where to go from here.
Since Avalon is not publishing the second edition of the Mexico book which I
authored, I've asked the publisher to return copyright to me, which they
have agreed to do before the end of the year.
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? -- First, this means if you've wanted to buy a copy of
the first edition, this is your last chance! You can buy the book via
>> http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ISBN=1562613405/ecotravelsinlatiA/
[A sidenote... I've always found it interesting that I get more $ as a sales
commission from Amazon.com than author royalties!]
Second, it means I am exploring options and looking for a new publisher.
Probably, I'll be divvying up the book into regional sections and offering
them as e-books, starting with Oaxaca! Many thanks to everyone who has
supported this book. I look forward to moving ahead with the second edition!

Planeta.com

Want to know how ecotourism is developing in Mexico? The Web is a great
tool. Having hosted Planeta.com <http://www.planeta.com> since 1994, I know
that we are witnessing a revolution of how travelers are actively seeking
out information about nature-based travel and ecotourism.
Here are a few pointers on the Web. Consider this a snapshot -- November
2001 -- of what is and is not online. Things have improved. This time I did
not find a picture of a tourist sipping a margarita in resort pool with the
title "Ecotourism." Still, there is room for improvement -- even on
Planeta.com!
Comments and suggestions (in Spanish or English) should be sent to the
Mexico Ecotourism Network -- <red-mexicana-anuncios@yahoogroups.com>.
- Ron Mader, Webhost, Planeta.com
Amtave
http://www.amtave.com/
- Mexico's national association of ecotourism and adventure tourism. The
site has just been updated and lists its regional presidents. It also
includes links to its members based on the type of tour they offer or by
region.
Ecotourism brochure (PDF File)
http://www.iskyonline.com/mexico/http://www.iskyonline.com/mexico/vm/pdf/special/sec4_ecotourism.pdf
- The only companies that are listed are based in the US. Does this give the
impression that there are no Mexican companies that offer trips? Likewise,
if you are interested in adventure travel, you are advised to consult the
Adventure Travel Society (also based in the US). The Amtave website is
incorrectly listed.
Visit Mexico
http://www.visitmexico.comhttp://www.visitmexico.com/travelers/tour/activities/nature.html
- Provides an index of natural attractions though with no information on how
to visit these places. The press section -- http://www.visitmexicopress.com
-- does not work.
Ecoturismolatino.com
http://www.ecoturismolatino.com/
- Aimed at travelers - particularly students - this site guides visitors to
a myriad of natural destinations in Mexico.
SECTUR
http://mexico-travel.com
- The website begins with a slide show of birds in Mexico. The site is hard
to navigate. What do the icons mean? This summer the site included a pop-up
window with archives of the national ecotourism conference. But now that's
impossible to find. And using the "Buscar" tool to search through the site
yields "No se encontro información" when I entered ecoturismo.
Consejo de Promocion Turistica
http://www.cptm-administracion.com.mx/
- Very little information from or about the national tourism board
Planeta.com
http://www.planeta.com
- Ecotourism and nature travel are the strong points of Planeta.com --
hosted by yours truly since 1994. Planeta focuses on Environmental News and
Tourism, particularly in the Americas. Since our debut, there has been no
dispute that the most popular section of our site focuses on Mexico. We've
had the privilege of publishing articles by pioneers such as Hector
Ceballas, Jorge Chavez, Marlene Ehrenberg, Angel Nieva, Balam Consoltoria
and so many other leaders in this field. These resources include the
following:
1) Directory of Mexico Travel Providers
http://www.planeta.com/ecotravel/resources/mexdex.html
- Aimed at travelers and travel agents, this index provides a list of who is
doing what in Mexico as well as the international operators promoting nature
travel
2) Mexico Ecotourism Network (Red Mexicana de Ecoturismo)
http://www.planeta.com/ecotravel/mexico/red.html
- Aimed at professionals, this page documents our various Mexico-specific
forums. The "Planeta Mexico" group is Planeta.com's most popular country
forum with more than 300 members
3) Reimagining Mexico Ecotourism Conference
http://www.planeta.com/ecotravel/mexico/re-imagining/mexico2000.html
- Aimed at professionals, this conference was the first online venue to
focus specifically on ecotourism in Mexico. A summary document is available.
4) Mexico Ecotourism Index
http://www.planeta.com/ecotravel/mexico/mexlinks/mxecotour.html
- Aimed at professionals, this guide is a favorite of students and
consultants all over the world. Again, suggestions are invited, particularly
through participation in the Mexico Ecotourism Network

FYI -
A few updates. Planeta.com has just published a report (still being edited)
about last week's airplane crashes with some reflections on travel safety:
I'm a strong believer that if we want to see positive change, we must be
proactive and stay focused on making the world a better place -- poco a
poco...
Second -- we are still in the prep stage for next week's Reimagining
Ecotourism in the Americas Conference. The event resumes the week of
September 24-28. Participants will submit and discuss specific status
reports from individual countries and bioregions in the Americas. We have
about 300 people registered. It promises to be an interesting discussion!

How is Mexico developing rural mountain-based tourism which protects the

1. Inside Balam
Balam began eight years ago. This consulting group is headed by Juan Carlos
Ibarra and Antonio Suarez. We specialize in developing community-based
nature tourism with the goals of improving conservation and developing
community-level employment using ecotourism.
Balam teaches an average of 19 workshops a year in rural Mexico. The work
with ejidos and comunidades has taken us all over the country. We have seen
the great potential of the country and its people and the general need to
develop sustainable ways of life.
The Balam Boletin is our way to sharing news of our work with old friends
and new! It will appear on a regular basis and be posted to Red Mexicana
deEcoturismo and the Mountain Forum.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
2. Community training
Community training has taught us that there is no better money spent than
the one which enables communities to take make their own decisions -
regardless of whether "experts" consider them correct.
In the past two years we have specialized in the building of light
infrastructure; trail building, sanitation facilities, camp sites,
signage, recreational GIS, maps and others.
Now we teach campesinos how to build their own parks. Locals who organize
themselves and their own ecotourism operations are key to the success of
rural tourism. Each of our courses is different and developed to take
advantage of the particular site.
Recent Work:
Community /Hectares in tourism use
1. Axosco, D.F 3000
2. San Miguel San de mi Alma, Edo. Mex. 200
3. Reserva estatal Monte alto, Edo. Mex. 564
4. Vergel de Bernalejo, Guanajuato. 1000
5. Yavesia, Sierra Norte de Oaxaca 9000
In addition to this training we have taken community leaders to visit each
other's projects. This year we conducted several one-day workshops with our
friends at the San Nicolas Park (the project Balam started in 1994 with
financial assistance from the Fondo Mexicano para la Naturaleza or FMCN)
as well as Monte Alto and the Axosco park.
1. 40 people from "el Jabali, Edo. Mex." hoping to start an ecotourism
project visited San Nicolas.
2. 50 from "El Chico and El Guajolote" in the state of Hidalgo visited San
Nicolas and Monte Alto.
3. 15 comuneros from Zacapexco in Estado de Mexico visited San Nicolas
and Monte Alto.
4. 50 Comuneros from "La Magdalena Contreras visited Monte Alto and Axosco
park in D.F.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
3. Parks
a) CEPANAF (The State of Mexico's Park Commission) hired Balam to build
parks in the Monte Alto State Reserve at Valle de Bravo. This included the
construction of 20 miles of multiple use trails, two camp sites including
12 soil beds for camping, three fire places, one palapa, six dry
sanitations modules, six "Tent cabins" with four beds each, two information
modules, maps and more than 300 individual signs.
b) In coordination with Mexico City's Comuneros and Delegacion Magdalena
Contreras, Balam has been planning the development of a 3,000 hectare park.
Work in the field is scheduled to begin in November.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
4. Trips and exchanged organized
a) This summer Balam invited the International Mountain Bike Association
(IMBA) and Open Spaces from Colorado to work in Monte Alto for one week in
the development of multiple-use trails, Judd de Vall and Kim Fredrick
exchanged techniques and tips with campesinos and Balam.
http://www.imba.com/news/news_releases/03_01/03_29_mexico.html
b) Balam organized the "Tuercas y Tornillos para Axosco" on July 1st. This
one-day bicycle ride to gather bike parts in donation for the alpine patrol
of the recently created (December 2000) Axosco Park.
http://www.mountainbike.org.mx/axoscotuercas.html
c) Balam invited mountain bikers to visit Monte Alto in to a morning ride
to promote the park.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
5. The Colibri Award
Planeta.com with a donation from Emilio Kafuri of Columbus Travel
presented Balam the Colibri Ecotourism Award in recognition for our work.
This is one of the best things that has happened to us! The $1,000 US was
invested in the completion of the trails in Monte Alto and a CD burner for
our presentations.
http://www.planeta.com/planeta/01/0106award.html
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
6. Lessons Learned
In the beginning stage nature tourism development in Mexico was primarily
the business of writing papers. Expensive consultancy firms would work on
projects that never got off the ground. Now tourism operators, government
officials and communities are demanding to see real projects achieve their
potential.
Income from nature-based tourism can pay for conservation, local
surveillance and diminish the migration among young people in rural areas.
There is now more of a reason than ever to be proud of rural Mexico.
We have noticed that the biggest threat comes from the pressure to sell the
land -- privatization. This occurs mostly in coastal regions. Examples of
impacted areas include the Costa Maya and the Sea of Cortez -- targeted for
development by the Escalera Nautica project.
Sustainable tourism is not necessarily expensive. Balam works with minimal
budgets because the people we want to work with have very little money. The
fact is that in Mexico we have an opportunity to learn about our own
natural and cultural heritage. Tourism offers Mexican nationals and
foreigners alike the chance to see the deeper side of Mexico.
We encourage readers of the Balam Boletin to visit the parks where we've
worked. If you have any comments or suggestions, feel free to contact us

Subject: [red-mexicana-anuncios] reestructura Amtave
Julio 24, 2001
Atentamente

** URGENT € TIME SENSITIVE * Please Distribute Widely **
Planeta.com Presents Colibri Ecotourism Award
to Juan Carlos Ibarra and Antonio Suarez
>> http://www.planeta.com/planeta/01/0106award.html
To celebrate World Environment Day (June 5, 2001), Planeta.com proudly
presents its first-ever award for excellence in ecotourism -- the Colibri
Ecotourism Award -- to two Mexican nationals who stand at the vanguard of
responsible tourism.
The recipients of the first annual award are Juan Carlos Ibarra and Antonio
Suarez. The friends have worked for the past decade in promoting responsible
tourism in rural Mexico. Ibarra and Suarez first developed bicycle tours and
more recently have conducted community tourism workshops under the umbrella
of Consultoria Balam. This work, performed at the grassroots level, aims to
protect the environment and empower local communities.
The Colibri Ecotourism Award is accompanied by a $1,000 cash award from
Columbus Copper Canyon Travel. Approving of the award winners were Mexico
Ecotourism Network (Red Mexicana de Ecoturismo) founding members Marlene
Ehrenberg and Jorge Chavez de la Peña. The cash award was sent directly to
the winners.
Award Winners
Juan Carlos Ibarra and Antonio Suarez were selected by Planeta.com Webhost
Ron Mader because of their practical field work, conceptual framework and
commitment to communication.
Based their experiences in the field, these pioneers have delivered
presentations across Mexico, and many of their useful resource documents are
featured online the Web -- on Planeta.com, the Mountain Forum and the Mexico
Ecotourism Network Forum. In addition, Antonio Suarez writes a bi-weekly
column for the prestigious Mexico City newspaper Reforma.
"This award gives us great hope and no doubt, it will help us improve our
work," said award-winner Antonio Suarez. "Our goals have always been
three-fold: 1) generate employment in rural areas; 2) promote an
appreciation of the beauty of Mexico's landscapes and the people and 3)
convert tourism into a tool that provides for conservation."
"We are honored to sponsor this award with Planeta.com and we are also
honored to have Consultoria Balam as the first recipient of the award," said
Emilio Kifuri, director of Columbus Copper Canyon Travel.
"Their rural community ecotourism development focusing on nurturing the
inner strengths is a testament to our enterprising human spirit which
transcends cultures and unites us all. This insightful and sensitive
training may well become the model for all future rural community
development programs worldwide. Also to be commended is their innovative
development of other community endeavors like fish farms and greenhouses
simultaneously generating alternate benefits as well as support to
ecotourism."
Mexican Ecotourism
"Mexico is one of the world's mega diverse countries with one of the most
successful tourism industries," said Emilio Kifuri. "If ecotourism is ever
to overtake the senseless destruction of the world's natural areas, it
certainly has to develop at a much faster pace. Nowhere is it more important
and necessary to develop ecotourism than in Mexico. We feel fortunate to be
in a position to demonstrate to the tourism industry that ecotourism can be
more profitable than mainstream tourism. It is this potential for profit
that has the greatest ability to cause the most profound changes."
The Award
The Colibri Ecotourism Award is the first time Planeta.com has been able to
channel funding for innovative ecotourism work.
Said Planeta.com Webhost Ron Mader: "Planeta.com has created a special
online niche for discussion and review of practical ecotourism. In choosing
a recipient for the Colibri Ecotourism Award, we chose to recognize work
that stands at the vanguard of meaningful change. In this regard, Juan
Carlos Ibarra and Antonio Suarez's work is exemplary. They are teaching the
entire globe what it means to build the bridges among communities and
travelers."
Planeta.com is no stranger to awards. Webhost Ron Mader received the
prestigious "Ecotourism Excellence" recognition from Conservation
International in 2000 and numerous other alcolades (see
http://www.planeta.com/ecotravel/praise.html).

The demand for environmental travel is on the upswing around the globe. The
development of the industry requires a newfound respect for the environment
and for local communities. This forum is designed to tackle some of the
toughest issues head-on.
Panels will focus on the following topics:
1. Legislation, certification, insurance and ethics
2. Conservation and development of natural reserves
3. Integrating local communities
4. Project financing
5. Promotion and commercialization
6. Testimonials: what has been done right and what has been done wrong
The National Adventure and Ecotourism Forum takes place before the third
annual Expo Aventura, June 21st - 23rd, 2001, which will also be held at
the World Trade Center.

Greetings/Saludos -
This is to announce a few important changes within the Mexico Ecotourism
Network/Red Mexicana de Ecoturismo.
Starting immediately, the forum "Red Mexicana"
<http://www.egroups.com/group/red-mexicana> on Egroups will be put on hold.
Instead, the synthesis report will be sent to a new forum "Planeta Mexico"
This change does not affect our three discussion groups:
Ecotourism -- <http://www.egroups.com/group/red-mexicana-anuncios>
Adventure Tourism -- <http://www.egroups.com/group/red-mexicana-aventura>
Tourism -- <http://www.egroups.com/group/red-mexicana-turismo>
For those subscribers to the "Red" synthesis -- I will be updating your
email subscriptions this week.
Why the change? The big reason is that Planeta.com forums have become very
popular. People were expecting to find a "Planeta Mexico" forum, so the best
way of adding it was to rename the "Red Mexicana" group -- at least via the
Egroups website.
Below you will find the complete details about the Mexico forums.
Regards,
Ron Mader

Red Mexicana de Ecoturismo/Mexico Ecotourism Network
>> http://www.planeta.com/ecotravel/mexico/red.html
Red Mexicana de Ecoturismo (Mexican Ecotourism Network) is both a physical
and virtual network providing an open space for announcements, news and
other valuable information for professionals working toward improving
ecotourism in Mexico. The loosely-formed network (or "red" in Spanish) also
meets on a quarterly basis. Our last physical meeting was an internet
workshop held in December, 2000 in Mexico City's Centro Historico. We also
hosted the virtual ecotourism conference "Re-Imagining Mexico."
Details about the conference -- including a list of participants, references
and a summary document -- are online the Planeta.com website:
The network is sponsored by the award-winning Planeta.com website
(http://www.planeta.com), which focuses on environmental issues and travel
throughout the Americas. Planeta.com won the 1999 "Lente de Plata" award for
web coverage of tourism in Mexico.
There are several electronic mail lists associated with the Red Mexicana de

Writer's Guidelines for Planeta.com
>> http://www.planeta.com/ecotravel/search/guide.html
Write what you'd like to read.
Share your knowledge about environmental issues and/or eco travel in
the Americas. The popular and award-winning Planeta.com: Eco Travels in
Latin America website (http://www.planeta.com) accepts a variety of articles
from short practical guides to more detailed academic work focusing on
environmental issues and travel in the Americas. We strive to be both
reader- and author-friendly.
Please become familiar with the topics covered on this website. (Be sure to
subscribe to our Update Service --
http://www.planeta.com/ecotravel/search/list.html).
Examples of some of the best articles we've published online are listed
below. Submissions via email are the easiest to handle. We accept documents
in English or Spanish. (The webhost isn't fluent yet in Portuguese, French
or the other hundred languages native to the Americas, but if you have
something you'd like to submit, just ask!) If your documents are already
online, request a reciprocal link.
Along with your article, authors provide a means for readers to make contact
-- preferably with email -- and a one-line biography. If your submission is
accepted, you are responsible for letting Planeta.com know if and when your
contact information changes. You can also provide specific links to
documents already on the web. In exchange, I do ask for a reciprocal link
back to Planeta.com
Let's review. Here's what we are looking for:
1) Shorter articles are generally written in the first person, and usually
identify the advantages or problems of environmental tourism in the
Americas. These articles are geared to the general public and help introduce
Latin America to a wider audience. Most run from 500 - 1,000 words in
length.
Hints: Weave your experience with your knowledge of a specific issue. The
style can be informal, but it must be clear to the general reader. Introduce
yourself and explain why you're interested in the topic.
Examples:
Visiting El Cielo - Scott Walker
http://www.planeta.com/planeta/0897/0897cielo.html
Where to find the Birds in Celestun - David Bacab
http://www.planeta.com/planeta/1099/1299celestun.html
Visit to Venezuela - Greg Green
http://www.planeta.com/ecotravel/period/greg/ven.html
Renewal of Life in Guatemala - Susan Hoffman

Bahia de Caraquez, Ecuador Revisited - Peter Berg
http://www.planeta.com/planeta/0199/0299ecuador6.html 2) Longer
works are dissertations, theses, and materials of interest to specialists or
scholars. (What's the point of the Internet if we do not make space for
these kinds of materials? Academic works deserve to be more accessible -
this helps avoid duplication of research and makes the data available to
anyone interested in the topic.)
Examples:
NGO Landscapes:Conservation in the Maya Biosphere Reserve - Juanita Sundberg

Quinoa: Mother Grain of the Incas - Jordan Erdos

http://www.planeta.com/planeta/0799/0899campeche.html
Comunidades: Una Vision del Turismo en la Naturaleza - Antonio Suarez

Los Paramos de la Reserva Ecologica Cayambe Coca, Ecuador - Greta Roffler
http://www.planeta.com/planeta/1197/1197ecuador.html There is no
charge for posting materials online. Authors receive full credit for their
work as well as contact information (including an email hyperlink and/or a
link to another website) so that readers can contact them directly.
Technical Specifications: Try to cut and paste articles into email. I would
rather not receive attachments. If you do send the material via attachment,
let me know what format the document is in. Do not send photos unless you
have told me that you are sending them. I try to keep picture images compact
on this website to speed up downloading. Make sure image attachments are in
jpeg or gif format and smaller than 20K. Send one or two as a test.
Finally, please be patient! I'm often on the road. Every serious inquiry
receives a reply. So, if you don't hear from me in a reasonable amount of
time, please resend your quiery.
