Dear Professionals!

Jobs at all levels and in all fields will require you to manage your work effectively from day one. As you progress, you will need to develop and put into practice a range of management skills. Staff management and training, systems decisions, negotiation, all form part of the manager's brief. Library and information skills can provide the foundation on which to build a successful career in that field, or be equally valuable as transferable skills if you choose to make a complete career change. This is demonstrated in the report by the example of someone who moved out of business information, first into
stockbroking, then on to work for a statutory enforcement agency. In her current role she finds that her earlier information-seeking activities have been invaluable in pursuing a whole new area of knowledge, as well as in her day-to-day work. Management skills have
been added along the way and now involve her in such activities as managing strategic projects, as well as staff-related management.

That same approach, building on skills, and adding others, are equally important if you decide to work as an independent consultant. Here you will need not only to be highly motivated, but also very well organised, and able to think "outside the box". You will also need those practical skills that enable you to actually run the business, as well as keeping up-to-date in your chosen areas of operation.

Leadership skills, vision and management competence have contributed to Lynne Brindley's success, leading to her current post as Chief Executive of the British Library. Since her appointment in 2000, the British Library has undergone comprehensive management restructuring and completely transformed human resources management. In-house programmes have been developed in, for example, performance management
and leadership. Lynne provides an excellent example of the way in which skills, knowledge, experience and hard work can take you to the top of your profession.

The process of developing skills and acquiring knowledge is not quick or easy. They are gained through longer term experience, and require considerable thought and effort, but are well worth pursuing, resulting not only in personal growth and development, but also
promotion and a great deal of job satisfaction.

Cheers.

N.S. Khan

DEAR ALL.

Google Gets the Message, Launches Gmail

User Complaint About Existing Services Leads Google to Create Search-Based Webmail

Search is Number Two Online Activity – Email is Number One; "Heck, Yeah," Say Google Founders

As part of Google's mission to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful, google testing an email service called Gmail. Gmail is a free, search-based webmail service that includes 1,000 megabytes         (1 gigabyte) of storage capacity. The backbone of Gmail is a powerful Google search engine that quickly recalls any message an account owner has ever sent or received. That means there's no need to file messages in order to find them again. When Gmail displays an email, it automatically shows all the replies to that email as well, so users can view a message in the context of a conversation. There are no pop-ups or banner ads in Gmail, which places relevant text ads and links to related web pages adjacent to email messages.

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. - April 1, 2004 UTC - Amidst rampant media speculation, Google Inc. today announced it is testing a preview release of Gmail – a free search-based webmail service with a storage capacity of up to eight billion bits of information, the equivalent of 500,000 pages of email. Per user.

The inspiration for Gmail came from a Google user complaining about the poor quality of existing email services, recalled Larry Page, Google co-founder and president, Products. "She kvetched about spending all her time filing messages or trying to find them," Page said. "And when she's not doing that, she has to delete email like crazy to stay under the obligatory four megabyte limit. So she asked, 'Can't you people fix this?'"

The idea that there could be a better way to handle email caught the attention of a Google engineer who thought it might be a good "20 percent time" project. (Google requires engineers to spend a day a week on projects that interest them, unrelated to their day jobs). Millions of M&Ms later, Gmail was born.

"If a Google user has a problem with email, well, so do we," said Google co-founder and president of technology, Sergey Brin. "And while developing Gmail was a bit more complicated than we anticipated, we're pleased to be able to offer it to the user who asked for it."

Added Page, "Gmail solves all of my communication needs. It's fast and easy and has all the storage I need. And I can use it from anywhere. I love it!"

Today, a handful of users will begin testing the preview version of Gmail. Unlike other free webmail services, Gmail is built on the idea that users should never have to file or delete a message, or struggle to find an email they've sent or received. Key features of Gmail include:

  • Search: Built on Google search technology, Gmail enables people to quickly search every email they've ever sent or received. Using keywords or advanced search features, Gmail users can find what they need, when they need it.
  • Storage: Google believes people should be able to hold onto their mail forever. That's why Gmail comes with 1,000 megabytes (1 gigabyte) of free storage – more than 100 times what most other free webmail services offer.
  • Speed: Gmail makes using email faster and more efficient by eliminating the need to file messages into folders, and by automatically organizing individual emails into meaningful "conversations" that show messages in the context of all the replies sent in response to them. And it turns annoying spam e-mail messages into the equivalent of canned meat.

According to Page and Brin, Google will make the preview test version of Gmail available to a small number of email aficionados. With luck, Gmail will prove popular to them – and to the original user who sparked the idea.

Google's personalized search services:

Google Personalized Web Search and Google Web Alerts deliver customized search results based on preferences that users specify.

Google Personalized Web Search uses personal preferences to deliver custom search results based on interests selected by users. Users can control the degree of personalization in their results using a slider, and see the results change dynamically as the degree of personalization changes. For example, music enthusiasts will see different relevant sites for a search on [bass] than people who indicate an interest in the outdoors. More information about both services can be found at http://labs.google.com.

It builds the capacity of the citizen sector through training, networking and information dissemination. NGORC’s Intermediary NGOs directory shows more then 200 mid-level organizations working in different fields. From that directory NGORC-Information Centre contacted all mid-level organizations and has prepared a list of publications produced by Pakistan Civil Society Organizations on WOMEN which is available with us.

If wish to get someone, would love to serve you.

Dear Plag members

I am shocked to see the March/April issue of PAK-LIS News. The guest editorial which has been published in the name of Mr. Muhammad Shafiq Rana, actually belongs to Brian Hawkins (President, EDUCAUSE) who presented it in Australian Library and Information Science Association's annual conference "ALIA 2000: capitalizing on knowledge:the information professioanl in the 21st century". You can see the whole paper online on ALIA web site at: <http://conferences.alia.org.au/alia2000/proceedings/brian.hawkins.html>

Mr Rana has only changed the title of the paper, and have not added even a single word except the last paragraph to make its relevance with the pakistan's situation. This is a very criminal and shameful act and is the worst expample of information piracy I have ever seen. The editorial board of PAK-LIS NEWS is equally responsible for publishing it without reviewing.

I would request all the members to discourage such practices and help in promoting the original research.

Thanks and Regards

Dear PLAG Members

I am taking the opportunity to share my views about this shocking news made by Mr. Damin Martin.  In my point of view it is very irresponsible attitude of Mr. Rana.  It is no doubt dishonesty with our profession.  We being library professionals are custodian of knowledge property.  If we can not care about the copyright law, at least we may not involve in such ethical crime.  I condemn this attitude which is a bad spot to our profession.

I afraid, I can not agree with Mr. Damin Martin to blame PLAG for this deed.  PLAG is a forum where all its members can discuss their views; PLAG is working very honestly for the growth of this profession.

Dear colleagues,
I was myself pleasantly surprised by the quality of this writing
associated with a young author because material does not appear in
Plag-Pak. The editors should have noticed this and checked with the
writer. The problem is that when younger people see elders claiming
things that are not based on reality and professionals knowingly keeping
quiet then they think that it is ok to indulge in such things. Who will
notice and who will talk?

What Damin Martin has pointed out is more than shocking. This type of
practice brings shame not only to Plag itself but to the profession
also. However, this is nothing knew. Such literature (even books) does
exist in Pakistan.
It is the responsibility of the editors to ensure that the writing is
original.
Plag-Pak has over time deteriorated in quality - and now is plagued by
plagiarism!
It is unfortunate.
Sincerely,
Mumtaz Anwar

AOA,

sir plz forward this to all.

thanx

Dear All

METHOD TO BLOCK STOLEN MOBILES

Each Mobile Phone handset has a unique serial number. Check this number

by keying in the following digits on your phone: (  *#06#  ). A 15 digits

code

will appear on the screen. This number is unique to your handset.

Write it down and keep it somewhere safe. Should your phone get stolen,

you can phone your service provider and give them this code.

They will then be able to block your mobile phone, and render it useless,

even if the SIM card is changed. You probably won't get your phone back,

but at least you know that who ever stole it will be unable to use it but

perhaps as a paperweight. If everybody did this, there would be no point

in stealing a mobile phone. Please pass this message on to as many

people as possible.

thanx

Subject: WORST VIRUS EVER ---CNN ANNOUNCED

PLEASE SEND THIS TO EVERYONE ON YOUR CONTACT LIST !!

A new virus has just been discovered that has been classified by Microsoft

as the most destructive ever. This virus was discovered yesterday afternoon

by McAfee and no vaccine has yet ! been developed.
This virus simply destroys Sector Zero from the hard disk, where vital
information for its functioning are stored. This virus acts in the
following
  manner:

It sends itself automatically to all contacts on your list with the
title "A
Card for You". As soon as the supposed virtual card is opened the computer

freezes so that the user has to reboot. When the ctrl+alt+del keys or the
reset button are pressed, the virus destroys Sector Zero, thus permanently

destroying the hard disk. Yesterday in just a few hours this virus caused
panic in New York, according to news broadcast by CNN. This alert was
received by an employee of Microsoft itself. So don't open any mails with

subject: "A Virtual Card for You"

As soon as you get the mail, delete it!! Even if you know the sender !!!

Please remember me in your prayers
