Subject: Colon Classification System. an Introduction
dauzai
Send Email Send Email

Dear Professional:

An Introduction to Colon Classification;

Colon classification (CC) is a system of library classification developed by S. R. Ranganathan. It was the first ever faceted (or analytico-synthetic) classification. It is especially used in libraries in India.
Its name "Colon classification" comes from the use of colons to separate facets in class numbers. However, many other classification schemes, some of which are completely unrelated, also use colons and other punctuation in various functions. They should not be confused with Colon classification.
As an example, the subject "research in the cure of tuberculosis of lungs by x-ray conducted in India in 1950" results in a call number
L,45;421:6;253:f.44'N5
The components of this call number represent
Medicine, Lungs; Tuberculosis: Treatment; X-ray: Research.India’1950

Organization

The Colon Classification uses 42 main classes that are combined with other letters, numbers and marks in a manner reminiscent of the Library of Congress Classification to sort a publication.

Facets

CC uses five primary categories, or facets to further specify the sorting of a publication collectively called 'PMEST'.
, [[Personality]]
; [[Matter]] or property
: [[Energy]]
. [[Space]]
' [[Time]]

Classes

The following are the main classes of CC, with some subclasses, the main method used to sort the subclass using the PMEST scheme and examples showing application of PMEST.

Example

The most commonly cited example of the Colon Classification is the classification for:
  • "Research in the cure of the tuberculosis of lungs by x-ray conducted in India in 1950s":
  • Main classification is Medicine
    • (Medicine)
  • Within Medicine, the Lungs are the main concern
    • (Medicine, Lungs)
  • The property of the Lungs is that they are afflicted with Tuberculosis
    • (Medicine, Lungs; Tuberculosis)
  • The Tuberculosis is being performed (:) on, that is the intent is to cure (Treatment)
    • (Medicine, Lungs; Tuberculosis:Treatment)
  • The matter that we are treating the Tuberculosis with are X-Rays
    • (Medicine,Lungs;Tuberculosis:Treatment-ray)
  • And this discussion of treatment is regarding the Research phase
    • (Medicine, Lungs; Tuberculosis: Treatment; X-ray: Research)
  • This Research is performed within a geographical space (.) namely India
    • (Medicine, Lungs; Tuberculosis: Treatment; X-ray: Research.India)
  • During the time (') of 1950
    • (Medicine, Lungs; Tuberculosis: Treatment; X-ray: Research.India’1950)
  • And translating into the codes listed for each subject and facet the classification becomes
L, 45; 421:6; 253:f.44’N5

Dear Professionals,

I am grateful to all who responded my mail on the above subject. Special Thanks to:

Madam Azra Qureshi
Prof. Khurshid Ansari
Rana Zia Javed
Reiki Baloch
Muhammad Waqas
Waris Ali

I gone through the contents of code framed by PLA in its 12th All Pakistan Library Conference and Silver Jubilee Celebrations Nov.27-30,1982.The code is very comprehensive and framed by authoritative persons like:

Prof.Dr.Anis Khurshid
Dr.M.A.Qazi
Mr.Harold Jonathan
Sain Muhammad Malik
Mr.Abdul Hafeez Akhtar
Mr.Najaf Ali Khan
Malik Muhtaq Ahmed
Syed Irshad Ali
Mir Hassan Jamali
Mr.Ashraf Jalal
Mr.Mohammad Osman

However, I am of the opinion that this code was framed in 1982 and required modification in the changing scenario of Library Science. Rana Zia and Reiki Baloch proposed many new things which can be incorporated in new code. I am compiling new code any suggestion and proposal shall be wel comed. A draft of  code will be presented in PLA/PB and then for its final approval from Headquarters.

Thank you for your cooperation

My dear Rana zia javed!

You are a man of principles as I observed during short period of three days duration PLA conference.you have been speaking what u bore in ur mind irrespective of hypocratic diplomacy and now u have again raised the voice but plz. mind it u should react unbiasly.

No doubt, President/Secretary General of 'Defunct' PLA(HQ) are responsible for keeping PLA hostage for ten long years beating the record set by Mr. Sadiq Ali Khan of Karachi; but unfortunately, they have been getting warm welcome & appreciation from the flag bearers of PLA revival movement during three days conference. Perhaps both parties were satisfied with the DEAL struck between them for rescheduling the Election of Federal Branch.

I also observed that u never tried to appriciate/support President/Secretary General of PLA Head Quarter by clapping contrary to others.

My full support is with u, plz. do go to the Cout of Law to unearth and expose the misappropriations/misdeeds of Ex-Office bearers of PLA(HQ) as well as F.B. The story starts as follows.

1. After the announcement of PLA election results in 1997, Mr. Azeem Khan Marwat, the then Treasurer PLA (F.B), started distribution (Bandar Bant) of Funds of brancnh council.
  • The first recipient of Two lac rupees(200,000) was Peshawar Head Quarter who during it's tenure of ten years, neither published any single issue of News letter or PLA Journal nor held any Seminar, Training workshop etc. People must know where the funds are spent.
  • Second recipient of rupees 25,000/= was Self imposed general Secretary of Federal School Library Association Mr. Tanveer Ashraf. Azeem Khan marwat knows better, what is the progress of that school library Association.
  • Third recipient of Rs. 30,000/= was Elected Body of PLA(F.B) who must tell the members how it managed to exist alive during this period and how it has been conducting trainings, workshops, seminars & Eid Milan Parties with such a pity amount of funds handed over by the then Treasurer Mr. AZEEM KHAN MARWAT.
I hope u will go to the court without loss of any time.

E-LIS was formed in 2003 for the deposit of documents in the Library and Information Science (LIS) domain. It is the first international e-server in this subject area and resulted from the RCLIS (Research in Computing, Library and Information Science) project and the DoIS (Documents in Information Science), promoted by the Spanish Ministry of Culture and hosted by AEPIC team on machines of the Italian Consorzio Interuniversitario Lombardo per Elaborazione Automatica (CILEA). E-LIS relies on the voluntary work of individuals from a wide range of backgrounds and is non-commercial. There is neither funding nor interest in profiting from the initiative.
E-LIS aims to further the Open Access philosophy by making available papers in LIS and related fields. It is a free-access international archive, in line with the Free Online Scholarship (FOS) movement and the Eprints movement, based on the Open Archive Initiative (OAI) standards and protocols.

Backtalk: Books and their keepers, April 15, 2007

Flash Back:
Dr Syed Jalal Haider highlighted the situation of Library and information science and than Mr. M.Yousuf Ali painted rosy picture of it.

The moral of the story is:
Many times I may not agree with my teacher’s policies, or actions, but it is my responsibility to stand behind them and strive for better understanding as a student. I never openly criticize my teacher. I hold my doubt or criticisms to my self because possibly my view will change later on the matter. Actually, criticising back to teacher says I am their equal in knowledge. I never consider myself knowledgeable that's why I rely on my teacher’s judgment.

Bottom Line:

Dear Professionals,

Pakistan Library Association was founded in 1957 and 1982 was its Silver Jubilee year. Now 2007 should be its Golden Jubilee year and should be celebrate it vigorously. But...

                       WHERE WE ACTULLY STAND ?

1. LITIGATION IN FEDERAL BRANCH
2. ZERO BUDGET OF BRANCH COUNCILS
3.PROBLEMS OF LIBRARIANS
4.COLD ATTITUTDE OF PROFESSIONALS TOWARDS PLA
5. WE ARE STILL IN 1957
6.HESITATION IN HANDING OVER THE RECORD
7.OUR ACCOUNTS ARE NOT NEAT & CLEAN

Sir, the world has entirly changed, we cannot imagine what professional bodies are contributing  towards thier Profession. We should come out from the caves.

I request all the newly elected bodies of PLA to come forward and celebrate the year 2007 as Golden Jubilee.

With regards,

(Abid Ali Gill)
Sr.Librarian, QAL,Lahore

AOA

I think, its the most valuable/demanding  file.
It could be possible, that you are already aware from it,
if not then it must be very useful to you.

There is always the issue, that how we can convert our Numbers into Word.
I am sure it will help you lot, in this regards.

Just follow these steps, and enjoy :

Step
  1. Save  file                       on your computer, at any folder.
  2. Start Microsoft  Excel.
  3. Click   " Tools / Add-ins / Browse "   ( from Toolbar ).
  4. Go on the desired destination, where you already saved " VanguardAddin.xla" ,  and keep Clicking OK until dialog disappears.

Now you are  on your Excel worksheet back. Use the function RUPEES  to convert figures to Words, For example,
you can type the following formula in any cell :
        =Rupees(200)   and press enter  or
=Rupees(cell address where, you already entered some Numbers).

Result will look like :        "Rupees Two Hundred Only"

I am sure you will enjoy with it, and also assist greatly in your routine work.

Attached screen shot for your reference.

Is there is any query, don't hesitate to contact me.

Just always remain in your DUA.

Thanks & Regards
