I'm a lazy Google searcher.  If I'm feeling energetic, I might put quote marks around my search terms, but that's the extent of my efforts.  Michael Miller has shown me the error of my ways, however, with his insightful article, Ten Tips for Smarter Google Searches.  Even if you know the Boolean basics, there might be a few Googletastic tricks that are new to you.

If you're a web developer, be sure to catch Kris Hadlock's article, How to Use Atlas for ASP.NET. He covers everything you need to know about how to use the new Atlas framework: where to get it and how to integrate it and create your own AJAX-enabled ASP.NET web site from the ground up with C#.

A two day National workshop on “Information & Communication Technology (ICT) Skills begins on Tuesday (5th Dec 2006) at 8:30am at Al-Mizan campus of Riphah International University, 274 Peshawar Road Rawalpindi. The First Ever National Workshop on “ICT Skills for Library Professionals” Concludes with a Call to Establish a Body to Regulate Libraries & Learning Resource Centres Countrywide

 

The first ever two day National workshop on “Information & Communication Technology (ICT) Skills Concluded Wednesday (6th Dec 2006) at Al-Mizan campus of Riphah International University, Islamabad. Organized by the Department of Library & Learning Resource Centres, Islamic International Medical College Trust, the workshop was participated by library professionals including Information Managers, Archivists, Documentation Officers and Researchers from all over the country.

 

The Vice Chancellor Riphah International University, Prof.Dr.Anis Ahmad presided over the concluding ceremony.

 

Speaking on the occasion the Vice Chancellor emphasized the importance of promoting research culture in the country. He said library professionals can play a vital role in boosting the culture of research strengthening libraries and resource centres. He said no doubt electronic communications have made things easy for us particularly for library professionals who can have significant information about libraries all over the world but the importance of print media cannot be ignored. Books have there own importance in dissemination knowledge and creating research atmosphere. Islam has taught us to learn and enquire knowledge.

Prof. Dr. Anis Ahmad congratulated the head of the department of libraries & learning resource centres, Islamic International Medical College Trust, Mian Muhammad Ramzan, Head Librarian and his staff for successfully organizing this 1st National workshop on ICT Skills for library Professionals. He welcomed the suggestions made by the participants and said the recommendations made at the workshop will be useful to chalk out the strategy for the promotion of library skills in the country. In this respect, he promised to bring the deliberations of the workshop to the notice of the Chairman Higher Education Commission Dr. Atta Ur Rehman and other higher authorities for implementing them. He said Riphah International University is among five top private sector universities declared eligible for Govt funding and support. As such we will be able to have financial support from HEC for developing the library and learning resource centres network of the university and its constituent colleges and institutions.

Earlier, Mr. Khurram Pervez from Karachi, Mr. Saleem Ahmad form Judicial Academy Islamabad & Miss Qurat-ul-Ain Amber from Health Services Academy Islamabad presented suggestions and recommendations finalized by the workshop as group leaders.

The Resource Person of the workshop Rana Muhammad Iqbal, Library Specialist Planning Commission of Pakistan, Islamabad, spoke on the aims and objectives of the workshop.

The workshop recommended that there should be an authority or a body to look after the affairs of libraries and learning resource centres at the national level to support the research activities in Higher Education institutions and to inculcate the culture of book reading. Such body should also protect the interests of library professionals and regulate their service structure.

Mian Muhammad Ramzan, Head Librarian, Islamic International Medical College Trust, thanked the Vice Chancellor Riphah International University for presiding over the concluding session and providing valuable guidance to the participants of the workshop. He also thanked the participants for taking active part in the deliberations of the workshop and making historic recommendations which may prove a landmark in promoting Information & Communication Technology (ICT) Skills in the country.

In all twenty four participants from Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar, Jamshoro Hyderabad, Faisalabad, Rawalpindi and Islamabad representing prestigious institutions of the country participated in the workshop.

The workshop was inaugurated on Tuesday (5th December 2006) by Prof. Dr. Khalid Mehmood, Chairman Department of Library & Information Sciences, University of Punjab Lahore. Besides Prof. Dr. Khalid Mehmood, Mian Muhammad Ramzan, Rana Muhammad Iqbal, Frasat Shaffi Ullah of Bahria University and Zahid Iqbal of IIMCT were the resource persons.

A two day International Seminar on the UDC will be held at the UDC Headquarters in The Hague, exploring latest developments and applications of the Universal Decimal  Classification. There will be an international panel of speakers and presentations by members of the UDC Consortium.

Due to great demand for participation we have decided to manage another workshop with the same contents on
