Hello Again Everyone-
Tonight 3/29, the brothers of Epsilon Lambda held a brotherhood auction. The
event was
VERY successful, we raised almost $650 tonight. A majority of this money will
go towards
philanthropic events. I am telling this so that other chapters can use this
idea and see profit
for their chapter.

I'm very pleased about my Brothers' concern for the family of Chris Morgan.
I'm sure his death was a terrible thing for them to bear. I find it very
courageous that they put the well-being of the Morgan family before their
own grief. These are the kinds of acts that people don't take into account
when they dismiss Greeks as being self-centered.

I wanted to share with all of you something very incredible that I heard
over the weekend about the Beta Epsilon chapter at Southern Mississippi.
I was invited to give the keynote speech at Nicholls State University in
Thibodaux, LA over the weekend. After my presentation, the Asst. Director
of Admissions came up to me and asked if she could share something about the
Phi Tau chapter at Souther Miss. This young woman, Brandi Morgan Toups
proceeded to tell me about her brother, Chris Morgan. Chris died very
tragically last summer after drowning in Europe. She said that the Phi Taus
from his chapter provided her family with the most incredible support during
the most terrible circumstances. Brandi said, "Our family always knew how
special Chris was. It was amazing to us that his fraternity brothers also
truly knew the kind of person he was."
Brandi explained the type of support the brothers provided to her family,
including showing up at the funeral and just being a rock of support. She
told me about the scrapbook of cards, letters and notes that the chapter put
together, collected from Phi Taus from all around the country. She said
they never would have gotten through this experience without the members of
Phi Kappa Tau. What's more, all of the staff at Nicholls State University
knew what Brandi had lived through and how terrible it was. Every single
person came up and mentioned that they knew about Phi Kappa Tau because of
the support the chapter had provided to their friend. It was incredible to
hear their stories.
Brandi asked me to share this with the staff at the national headquarters,
which I did. But, I also wanted to share it with all of you. This is what
being a fraternity man is all about. No doubt this was an excruciating
experience for the chapter to lose one of their own brothers. However, they
looked beyond themselves and reached out to a family in need. And they made
a major difference in this family's life. I was exceptionally proud to hear
this story despite the very sad circumstances. Special thanks to Beta
Epsilon for knowing what it means to be real brothers and supporting not
only one another, but Chris' family as well. We are all proud of you and
thank you for really showing a mark of distinction during a very sad time.
It was interesting to see that Phi Tau's reputation as a fraternity is a cut
above the rest. There are no other PKT chapters in Louisiana but because of
the actions of just a few, the fraternity is perceived (and rightly!) to
have members who care about others, treat people with dignity and respect,
and have tremendous pride in the organization. Never underestimate how your
actions will influence others.
Thanks for letting me share this with all of you.
Best regards,

In response to Frat Guy
I am a PKT Frat Guy
By Kevin Kunard
I drink
Am hated
Network with Alumni to increase my chances of having a great career
Am actively guided by my national fraternity staff
Go to parties
Sometimes I smoke
Can be obnoxiously intoxicated
Am stereotyped
Classified as a high class spoiled rich white kid
Pay for my fraternity to participate in activities
But others claim its to keep my friends
Am unrecognized for the good I do
Prosecuted for bad that others not associated with me do
Treated like a frat guy when I am a fraternity man
Act like I am a stud cause I spend most of my time with men
Have feelings too
Do community Service for the local community
Hated cause my secrets
Though my secrets help me to become a better man
Persecuted and ridiculed because I have the resources an independent doesn't
Take pride in my letters cause they mean something you could never
understand
Cherish my brothers and look out for them cause they are my family away from
my family
Try to hook up with women just like any other heterosexual man
Get blamed for every beer an underage person consumes
I live in a fraternity house
I fight independents that spread the rumors about my brothers and believe
every stereotype cause I am frustrated with their ignorance
I feel everyone should go Greek because of the great things I have received
from membership
There are independents that do as some of my brothers do, but my brother is
looked at as trouble making piece of trash
I am going to be one of the 16 Presidents of the United States that are
Greek and had a chance to be Greek
I sing with my brother's cause I have pride in myself and the organization I
belong to
I will probably be your boss
I like to party a lot cause I am busy all week working: on my schoolwork,
with my fraternity and sometimes hold a full/part time job, can you?
I do most of the same things now as I did before I became Greek
I go to class others just can't tell who I am cause I don't wear my letters
when classes start so teachers and others don't judge me before they see how
smart I really am and accuse me of cheating
I am expected to know the school song while Independents don't know
it
I can't expect you to understand why I learn the Greek Alphabet
I study you just don't see me study cause I do it behind closed doors and
have excellent time management, I have to, another thing I got from the
fraternity
Everyone claims they know my G.P.A. is 3.0 less than it really is
I am put under a whole other set of standards that are much higher than that
of your parents
My brothers and I keep each other in school with constant encouragement
I do stupid things time to time, but am put on the front page cause I am
seen as representing a group of people constantly on trial 24-7
I like Road Trips they keep my mind off all the stress I am under, they
allow me to bond with my brothers
I don't always buy books cause my housemates may be in the same class and we
share and split the cost
Believe it or not I pay for stuff, sometimes everything
I have never had a keg party, my chapter and my fraternity nationally
prohibits that
If and when I may have sex I am sexually responsible if I make that choice
My Greek brothers and I will be and are 15% of the CEO's for fortune 500
companies
Never played beer pong
Don't own a beer bong
Danced with your grandma at a Senior Citizens Home on Valentines Day
I sometimes take advantage of situations cause I am in a fraternity
I helped build a house in habitat for humanity
I helped raise money for terminally ill children to go to summer camp at
Paul Newman's Hole in the Wall Gang Camp
When I give my lavaliere to the woman I love she is ridiculed for dating me
cause I am in a "frat"
When I go out I hear your whispers and giggles, I ignore them I am stronger
than that, I will not stoop to your level,
Believe it or not, I go to Church
I listen when my brothers have problems, I stay up with them until I am have
comforted them
I talk about my feelings with my brothers
I am not always muscular
I cry sometimes, and have in front of every man in my fraternity
I sometimes dress the same cause I share the same likes and dislikes as my
brothers
Sometimes I am a computer geek
I have a laid back way of looking at life, I call it down to earth
The first question I am asked is if we haze
Then the next 45 minutes I must explain that we don't
I am active politically
I enjoy music cause it takes away my problems temporarily
I know from my experiences that living under stereotypes is terrible
Some women think I am fun, mostly cause I have confidence and am not a
wallflower
Independents can't stand that
Girls spend the night in my bed, 9 times out of 10 I am sleeping on the
couch or the floor in the next room
When I respond to vague accusations of how terrible I and my brothers are,
they say "awe that’s too, bad you poor thing." But I'm not looking for
sympathy, I am looking for respect, for I am not like those you make fun of
I am not like those who helped some drink themselves to death.
And like 85% of all men I LEAVE THE TOILET SEAT UP SOMETIMES
AND THAT IS SAD, BUT TRUE
Oh Wait I'm a Phi - Tau and Damn Proud!!!! Step aside son . . . . .Here
comes the Total Man, not because of my looks and the amount of money I may
have or don't have, because of my morals and beliefs and my love for an
organization that bases its primary goal around helping a boy become a man
that will help hid community not live off it…..
Ponder that Independent
Remember I wasn't born Greek, you just like to think so
Brothers I am not done, just a few thoughts, if you would like to add any
let me know, I know that I have not included everything, tell me what you
think.

I wanted to comment on the "Frat Guy" monologue.
Unfortunately, I believe there are two kinds of fraternity members. You
have "frat guys" that could more appropriately be described as gang
members. These are the dregs of the Greek system, these are the kind of
people that are giving the Greek system a bad name and need to be weeded
out before they destroy what we believe in.
But then you have Fraternity Brothers...these are the people that truly
take pride in the organization they belong to. They have an understanding
of the history, the ideals and meaning behind the fraternity. They know
what it is like to make sacrifices for their fraternity and their brothers.
And most importantly to look out for each other and make sure that no one
gets hurt or into trouble. They are also the same people that you continue
to have contact with long after you leave school.
I would continue to go on about what the differences are between a "frat
guy" and a fraternity brother, but I think you all get the idea.
Yours in Phi,
Tom Skena

"Sad but so true" is the quote that heads the "frat guy" forward I
received earlier(below). The thing that may be sad but true is that the
person who originally sent this has to hide behind his right of free
speech to stereotype other people or organizations just to hide the
(more than likely extremely obvious) incompetencies, inefficiencies, and
shortcomings he can't come to realize his life revolves around.
Being in a fraternity I pride myself on not trying to stereotype
anyone else due to the stereotypes I'm usually hit with. One thing I'm
not afraid to do is use my knowledge about Phi Kappa Tau, fraternities,
and life in general, to shoot down those stereotypes. The major thing
wrong with the forward I recieved is that the majority of the "I's" I
saw could be directed back to the person who sent it, or many of the
college students today (and sadly probably goes for many fraternity
men).
That is the problem with stereotypes, there seems to be one for every
person or occasion.
To justify the comment I made a few lines ago, life is what you make
of it. I am choosing to make my college and fraternity experience as
beneficial as I can, because that is my choice. In contrast, I could
have joined college and this fraternity and sat on my ass for the last
four years- if that had been my choice. Life is what you make of it.
Whatever road you go down, life is still what you make of it. I choose
not to waste my time worrying about what other people are doing with
there lives, I would much rather secure my own.
I guess where my point lies is first of all the fact that we should all
be proud of this fraternity and what we are doing with our time in it,
because that was our choice. That also goes for the pride we should all
show when someone confronts us about this choice we've made. But that
also means that we should use that pride carefully, and only when
needed, as not to be misconstrued as cockiness or arrogance. We should,
except in instances like this, try to show our pride in our actions
instead of words. I feel that this mail is warranted because I am
choosing to back something that I and all my brothers are extremely
proud about, as opposed to blatantly wasting my time attacking something
I have no right to and have no knowledge of. I'll end it there.
Proud To Be, Phi K T-

I'd just like to thank the Beta Beta chapter at
the University of Louisville for all of their work and
hospitality this weekend at their Phi Tau 3-on-3
tournament. It was alot of fun for all of those
involved. Even though this was our first time being
there, I hope we'll always send at least one team from
here on out as long as they host it.
I would encourage all chapters, if within distance
to put an effort forward to send some people, whether
they can play ball or not; I know we couldn't, but we
still had a lot of fun. It was a real positive
experience to play and party with brothers from so
many different chapters, from Michigan to Georgia and
everywhere in between.
Thanks again Beta Beta and good luck with the rest
of the year. Hope to see you all again at Derby.

Welcome! The listserv is back! There are a few
changes. We had a lot of problems with the past list
with some changes at HQ in Oxford. The decision was
made to move the list over to the folks at Onelist.
They do a good job and have a lot of administrative
options.
We have mapped some e-mail addresses, though. You can
still send mail using the address:
listserv@...
If you have any questions on the listserv or are
having troubles, please e-mail me @
listserv-owner@.... Take care and take
advantage of this great communication tool.

Hey all, (I might have sent this twice, wasn't sure which address to use)
I was wondering if there was any Visual Basic programmers out there that
could help me out. I started a program called My Recipe Box which is used to
save recipes in. I plan to give it away to the viewers that come to my site
BusyCooks.com (http://www.busycooks.com)
I need some help with the print functions, and a possible import/export
feature.
If you know Visual Basic, can you download this version of the program and
take a look at it. Then let me know if you can help me out with it?
