Todd gives some excellent advice below, but one thing I need to correct him on - the show no longer takes place at the Expo Mart, but rather the Monroeville convention center, which is a short walk from the Expo Mart and host hotel.

In addition, I'd like to add that there are a few not-to-be missed events, in my opinion.  One is the daily, and wildly popular quick sketch panels, where you can win some really great art for as little as a dollar while your donations go to a very worthwhile charity.  Another is the Saturday evening charity auction which annually raises tens of thousands of dollars for the Make-A-Wish foundation - this takes place in the hotel across from the convention center from... 8 to 11 PM, I believe.

Well, Craig, be prepared to walk a lot, stand a lot, and see a lot.  The ExpoMart is a big place, and there is as much comic convention fun crammed into it as possible.  There are a lot of Dealers, many obviously selling the same things, so remember not to necessarily jump on the first 'good deal' you see.  There are ton of artists, many of which you may not have heard of, but trust me, their talent is every bit as good, and sometimes even better, then the 'stars'.  But, having said that, where else can you meet people like Stan Lee, J. Scott Campbell, Khoi Pham, George Perez, Ron Frenz, Brett Breeding, and the other guests.  If there is a 'bad' thing, it is that everyone else is there to meet them too, so expect long lines.  Other than that, stay hydrated and just enjoy the show.

Hi everyone,
This will be my first time visiting the Pittsburgh Comicon and I just wanted to see if anyone had some tips.
I'll only be able to make it up on Saturday and want to try and fit in as much as possible.

Everything is great advice! I would just like add a couple of things. First off,
I don't know if this your first convention or your first Pittsburgh convention.

Pittsburgh is a great show. It's a medium sized show which, in my opinion, makes
it great. It's big enough that it's on the radar of a lot of industry people,
but small enough that you have a great chance of meeting artists, guests and
other comic people. Staying hydrated is a great idea, but also, you may want to
bring some snacks like granola bars or something like that. The food can get
expensive right at the Convention Center. If you are only going for the
Saturday, I would advise you get there early. Saturday is the busiest day and if
you are looking for a particular comic or meeting a particular guest, you want
to get there early and get cracking.

If this is your first convention ever, just a few things to remember:

Bring a camera. It's fun to document the whole day
Bring cash. Cash is king. If you have cash money in your hand, dealers are far
less likely to accept your offer for things, as opposed to taking credit.
If you are getting sketches, look for your favorite artist first. They can get
booked up quick so you want to get your name on the list right away. The
Pittsburgh convention is a great place to get great art for less money because a
lot of unknown emerging artists will be there so don't over look them just
because you don't know their name... yet.
The auction is a lot of fun, if you have the time for it, and you can get some
great items for little cost. AND it all goes towards charity.

Overall have fun!
Hope this helps!
Chris

Thanks for the advice everyone.
This will be my first comic convention. I went to a few smaller-scale sci-fi
shows in college, but haven't been to any other events in years. I heard about
the Pittsburgh Con last year and figured I would check it out.
I actually found out yesterday a couple of my coworkers are going to be there
too.
Definitely getting excited.

Thanks again.

Patrick,
I just bought a Stan Lee VIP ticket from the website. I was wondering if you could give me a few more details.
How will I get this? I assume I will pick this up at the show, but since it lets you in early each day I just wanted to know for sure Plus how early on Friday (and Saturday & Sunday) can I get it and where?
I will bring my photo ID and a copy of the e-mail with the confirmation number.
What does the "Froggy Photo Op" entail? I see that it will be a 8X10 taken with Stan, and there is a part that said that it is not guaranteed it will be signed which I understand,
but will there be a special time for the VIP's to do this before or after everyone else that might give the photo a better chance for ours to be signed? Just curious.
When I first read about the VIP ticket it made it seem like you would get a little extra time with Stan other than just buying the regular autograph tickets and now it seems like it gives you early access to the autograph line.
Is that right?
Any other details that you can give me that I didn't ask would be great as well.
This is always a highlight of my year and you've done an amazing job.
Thanks for your time and have a great weekend!
Chuck Gilbert

Hey Chuck, I'll answer as best I can....

Pick up is at the VIP Entrance of the Comicon. Which is the entrance in the
South Hall. Either your printed confirmation for your purchase or a Photo ID is
all you need to pick up.

As VIP's you get in 30 mins early each day.
That would be 12:30 on Friday, 9:30 on Saturday and Sunday.

Originally we had planned on having the VIP signings take place in a seperate
room, but Stan's people don't like running Stan from place to place too much,
that is why we replaced the original photo op and signing in the green room with
a Froggy Photo - Photo Op and the VIP Signing Tickets.

Your VIP Ticket bumps you to the front of both the signing line and the photo
line, but the photo developing process is what precludes us from being able to
get the Photos signed because we don't know what the time frame for the pictures
to be finished. They will be finished before the end of the day each day, but
Stan may have finished signing by that time.

Now because you will have two VIP signature tickets as part of your package, one
thing you could do if you are going to be there both Saturday and Sunday is if
you wanted to get one thing signed on Saturday, get your photo with Stan on
Saturday and then get your photo signed on Sunday with your second autograph
ticket, you could do that. Because again, your VIP Ticket bumps you to the front
of the line.

Then beyond the signings and photos, there will be VIP seating for the Stan Lee
Q & A for VIP ticket holders, plus... you get the Stan Lee Litho by Jim Balent
(this will only be going to VIPS), and other goodies bags, exclusive lanyards,
badges, etc.

Hopefully that answers your questions. If not, let me know and I'll get back to
you.

Patrick

hopefully get something up for 2013.  For those of you that do not know about
Guidebook, it is an app that basically serves as an electronic Program Guide for
an event.  It can list the schedule of events, exhibitors, a map of the venue,
allow for Twitter feeds, feedback, etc.  It is a pretty cool app and I think it
is a free download.  In fact, if I remember right, it is available for iOS,

Welcome first timer...

As a veteran of 15+ Pittsburgh Comicon's, Thongor72 and Todd offer some very
sage advise.

Would also like to suggest the following...

Get a good nights sleep the night before, and start with a good
breakfast...could be a long day. Comfortable shoes are a must.

preparation- having any "autograph requests" organized can save you and everyone
in the line time. Having the books removed from bags and boards also will save
you some time in lines as well. Go to your absolute favorites early, sometimes
often is the key, as line(s) will vary through out the day(s)(especially
Saturday!) Check the cancellation board at the con as well, it may save you some
time when looking for that guest that is never at their table...

patience- realizing that everyone is trying to do the same things you are goes a
long way in the understanding that you may miss something...don't get
discouraged. Also remember the guests are human too...they need breaks every now
and them as well. for heavens sake let EBas help his fiance with the new baby if
he asks...If you see a sign at at guests table saying "will return in XX
minutes" don't get discouraged if it takes double that, they may have run into a
friend they have not seen in some time. It can be a social time for them as
well.

prioritization- trying to "do it all" is not possible...make a list of
guests/events/panels that YOU enjoy, and plan your day accordingly. Cross off as
many as possible, but enjoy every one of them!(that's what is really important)

appreciation- hate sounding like my parents, but "thank you" goes a long way!
Many guests may charge for autographs/sketches, but thanks are always
encouraged. Thank the promoters if you see them. Thank the volunteers as well.
Remember they are there for all of us, they come back for the same reasons we
do!

and last but not least...bathe and deoderant(surprising how many people take
this for granted)....nothing worse than being "that guy" at the show....the show
can get crowded, thinking you can blend in with the crowd.....not gonna happen.
You will see at least one during your visit...don't be the one..lol

hope to see you at many more

ps...make sure you stop by the Auction Saturday night..loads of fun for Charity.

Patrick,
Thanks for the info!
That about answered all my questions.
Also thanks for the suggesting that I could get the photo with Stan on Saturday and then use the second autograph on Sunday for that.
Great thinking!
I was wondering if the Jim Balant lithograph would be able to be viewed either on the website or Facebook before the show?
I have some things I'm leaning on getting signed but I'd like to see what that looks like and maybe get it signed.
Thanks again!

Because again, your VIP Ticket bumps you to the front of the line.

Then beyond the signings and photos, there will be VIP seating for the Stan Lee Q & A for VIP ticket holders, plus... you get the Stan Lee Litho by Jim Balent (this will only be going to VIPS), and other goodies bags, exclusive lanyards, badges, etc.

Hopefully that answers your questions. If not, let me know and I'll get back to you.

Not sure if I can reply all or not to this but here goes.
Bring a BACKPACK!!!
Being a father of 2 kids I learned a long time ago going anywhere like this to take one.You get all kinds of free stuff as well as all the things you are having signed and buying and yes bring the snacks in it.I also use a dress shirt box to protect my comics.
This is my 3rd comic con and my sons 2nd.We have our VIP Stan Lee tickets and arent counting down the days.
Hope to see you all there.

Not a themed group, but I'm probably going to bring two different costumes, one
for Saturday and one for Sunday. I'll probably wear my Pearl Forrester(from
MST3k) on Saturday, because I've never worn it to Pittsburgh before. I think
Sunday I'll wear my Ma Hunkel costume, because my sister-in-law will be there as
the Golden Age Catwoman.

I know that one of our members was planning to be a Green Lantern and was
looking for other GL Corps members for photos.

Hey all!

First of all, I am extremely excited about coming once again to the Pittsburgh
comicon. This has to be close to my 10th trip and its getting better and better
all the time.

However interestingly enough, I have never taken the time to explore the
restaurants in the area (or even within a 20 min drive). So although I know
there is a TGIFridays, and Olive Garden (I think) in the area. I was wondering
if anyone can recomend a great place to eat in the area. Like are there any
restaurants seen on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives or anything cool like that? Last
year we went to Bella Luna and had some great pizza. Any other great family
owned businesses?

Thanks for all your help!

Chris,

I think that all depends on what you enjoy to eat.  I live just 5 minutes from the convention center and I'm still finding new places to eat.  Some I've enjoyed, and some I've found to be interesting, but ultimately not my thing.  What I've done when I go to a new location is I just see what places my GPS can find as far as food in the general vicinity and then see what sounds good to try.

My favorite 'local' pizza place is Vince's Pizza Park in Forest Hills.  It's probably about a 20-25 minute drive depending on traffic.  Handfulls of fresh toppings on the pizzas, not sparsely dealt out.  They can be expensive, but to me, they're worth it.  Though its one of those places where people either love it or hate it, not much middle ground.

They've added a Patron Mexican restaurant just up the street from the convention center as well, across from the Olive Garden.  The food there is pretty good if you enjoy Mexican.

Being in Pittsburgh, there is a Primanti's not that far from the convention center as well to get Pittsburgh's official sandwich.

Again it comes down to what type of food you like.  My advice is bring a GPS and use it if you can.

-Joe

Hey Joe!
Thanks for the quick reply. I don't know if I really know what I am looking for.
Maybe a diner type of restaurant? I don't really want any Mexican or Chinese
food. I like the idea of the pizza place.

When you say people love it or hate it, what do they hate about it? It sounds
pretty good so far!

I guess I am thinking about something sort of local and maybe a diner type
place.

Thank you so much for the reply!
And if anyone else wants to add anything, that would be fantastic!

It's easier to explain in pictures what a Vincent's Pie is.  They can be greasy, but very filling.  Here's a few videos I found on Youtube.

I love them, but my stomach can only handle them once or twice a year. lol

Some I've enjoyed, and some I've found to be interesting, but ultimately not my
thing.  What I've done when I go to a new location is I just see what places
my GPS can find as far as food in the general vicinity and then see what sounds
good to try.

Handfulls of fresh toppings on the pizzas, not sparsely dealt out.  They can
be expensive, but to me, they're worth it.  Though its one of those places
where people either love it or hate it, not much middle ground.

restaurants seen on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives or anything cool like that? Last
year we went to Bella Luna and had some great pizza. Any other great family
owned businesses?

Hey Donnie,

We don't have many of note right now, X-Men Noir's, Dennis Calero, Gene
Gonzales and Ed Beard Jr. are 3 that I know of off the top of my head, but let
me check with Renee today and get back to you. Then I'll make it a point of
getting the cancellations up on the site. With the change to the website for
2012 it completely skipped my mind, so thanks for reminding me.

any way to post any cancellations for those who already cancelled?
