Twas the Night Before the Super Bowl

`Twas the night before the Super Bowl, when along the gulf shore,
Steelers fans were praying for "just one more;"

The players were nestled all snug in the sack,
With visions of the first NFL Six-Pack;

Coach Tomlin was young, but wise for his years,
So I drifted off to sleep without any fears;

When at the stadium there arose some strange chatter,
The Cardinals feared, what was the matter;

We heard "Okel Dokel", we heard "Double Yoi,"
We jumped from our beds, our hearts jumped for joy;

He stood at the fifty with a grin ear to ear,
Steelers fans everywhere started to cheer;

Then in an instant to our surprise,
This little old man had tears in his eyes;

He went to the booth and there took his chair,
While Terrible Towels waved in the air;

Then over the airwaves came his shrill voice,
The Steelers Nation began to rejoice;

He said, "I am back, but you know I can't stay,
I just had to see my Steelers play;

From my home up above, I have a great view,
But I wanted to celebrate here with you;

So bring on the Birds, we'll send them a flyin',
On the way back to Phoenix , they will be cryin';

Ben, Hines, Troy , Jeff and all of the rest,
No matter the outcome, to me you're the best;"

The airwaves went silent, the stadium still,
Was this just a dream, it seemed so real;

In our team we have faith, in our team we have hope,
But the game's not the same without Myron Cope;

Further communication with Eric Basaluda. My reply to his question as to why I was asking about his attendance and his response follows.

===
Well first, I simply love your work here on DA and I saw your name on the artist list from last year. And second, they changed their dates in April to Sept 11-13th and I wasn't sure if you knew. I'm trying to get the word out as soon as possible in case there might be any confusion.

Is it typical for you to be booked like that? I'm not sure how the whole invite/booking thing works between top artists and cons; I'm just a fan :)

Regards,

Andrew

Eric's reply.

crap...well..i'll try and figure this out...thanks for the heads up

E
===

So again, to all you Con goers, make sure to spread the word to as many folks as you can just in case they're expecting an April show. I'm certainly not looking to step on the Con's official coordinators. I'm trying to help.

Andrew

On Wed Jan 28 8:31 , Andrew Harmon sent:

I noted Eric Basaldua  on Deviant Art to see if he'd be attending the Pittsburgh Con (and to make sure he knew of the date change) and this was his reply.

===
i think im the guest list again....last yr they didnt even tech invite me...they just booked it...

so prob why?

E
===

I wasn't sure how to read this given the lack of voice but I didn't know if he was upset by not getting an invite, whether it's standard for him to be auto-booked, or what. I just wanted to make sure that we try to get this cat :)

Regards,

Andrew

Let me preface this with I don't work for Pittsburgh Comicon, but I
think Patrick and Renee would agree with me.

Please stop sending invites to or asking artists to come to the con.
You're acting as though you are staff with the con and extending an
official invite. I understand that you're fan of Mr. Basaldua's work,
but you may be doing more harm than good.

Even when I preface that I'm not extending an official invite as staff with the Con and simply a fan hoping to see them there or wondering whether they'd thought about attending?

Is a fan not supposed to talk to an artist about seeing them at the only venue that fan attends?

I do understand that, But I'm sure you understand my point too. I'm looking forward to the September version of the Pittsburgh Comicon, I think there is great potential for "NEW" guests. Also if anyone is looking for a hotel, Red Roof is up the street probably 2 miles (if that) I booked my rooms already $63 a night, pretty sweet deal.

I may be going on Saturday, March 7th, but my friends haven't decided for sure
when.
You don't have to worry about the Torchwood conflict. It looks like it will be
airing in
either June or July. It's not a full season. It will be a five episode
mini-series called
"Torchwood: Children Of Earth" and will be aired in England and America around
the same
time. Then it will be released on DVD in July.

there's a group of us planning to go see it on Sunday, March 8,
probably the early evening show. Haven't been to the IMAX at the
waterfront yet, does anybody know if they have the VIP seating for the
IMAX theater? I imagine that they would. Anyway there is going to be
somewhere between 5 and 11 of us,. If anybody else wants to join in,
maybe we can get together for some dinner before the movie. Just let
me know

Seriously. If you're gonna make us wait till Septemeber, at least get
some good guests. To hell with the Dawn of the Dead people and people
who played a character that was in one of the Star Wars movies for 5
seconds. Seeing as how it's the 25h anniversary of Ghostbusters, why
not get Ernie Hudson again. Maybe a replica of the Ecto-1. Or if you
wanna go a completely different route, what about Bruce Campbell or
Robert Englund, or, hell, Kevin Smith.

While I can agree that it would be nice to see some higher profile personalities, there will always be a trade off.  The more popular a person is, the more their fees to appear, which in turn would lead to less funds being available to get more personalities to attend.  The last 2 years the Star Wars actors that have appeared have been Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca) and last year David Prowse (Darth Vader), hardly actors that had a few seconds of screen time and people that played probably two of the absolute favorite characters in the entire film series.

First and foremost, the comicon is just that, a comic convention. It's not exactly a pop culture convention, which is more like what Steel City is closer to. The main purpose is for the artists to get a chance to meet the fans, or for new artists to showcase their wares.  The last few years they've had some good names from that genre, George Perez, John Romita Jr., etc..

I agree with you that it would be neat to occasionally see someone of a higher profile, but that would then mean less money to get a wider variety in.  Regardless who shows up, I've always had an enjoyable time and met some interesting people.

Maybe the powers that be can try to work on getting an actor or two from 'Watchmen' for the con.  If they get scheduled before the movie is released it may be possible to get them cheaper then when it comes out if it turns out to be a big hit.

Maybe I'm wrong, but as I understood it, when they brought in Ernie
Hudson before, rates were raised for the vendors. Regardless though of
whether or not they had to charge more money to pay for the guy, there
were significantly less booths the year they had Hudson.

Just my two cents here. Having bigger names pop culture stars is nice
and all, but -if- they have to come at the expense of everyone else,
I'd rather have everyone else.

Yeah it would be great to see some newer guests this time and not some
that were in Star Wars for less than 5 minutes..how about some of the
guys from Mystery Science Theater 3000 ? That would be a good draw

Ive been watching this thread, and while some people say the con better do this or better do that, we are lucky we even have a comicon to go to
as for FFT's suggestion of someone from MST3K.... "FREAKIN' BRILLIANT" suggestion man. that would be toally awesome. just my 2 cents.

I agree Dugger, at least we do have a con we can go to. Even though
it's two hours away from me!
I would LOVE to see someone from MST3K be a guest, or how about
someone else from the Friday The 13th movies? Like Adrianne King,
Betsy Palmer, or something like that?

Arrrgh,

The email about our most recent update went out before I could post it
here, breaking all my promises about always letting you guys know
about stuff first, but anyway for those of you that don't get the
email updates, the info is contained below.

Talk to all again soon,

P.A.T.

----------------------------------

Greetings PittConners,

Although the show has moved to September and is now 7 months away, we
are going to stay ahead of the game and begin making early guest
announcements for the 2009 show. (Actually, I just don't know what to
do with myself in February with no show coming up in April)
Hopefully, this will keep you all excited through the downtime from
April until September. (For those of you who are just now finding out
about the Comicon date change, where have you been!?? You can check
out all the new date, time, contract, map and other info at
www.pittsburghcomicon.com.)

We have various small press guests that have already signed up for
September, but I haven't had the opportunity to go through that entire
list yet, I'll be adding them in the coming weeks, I do, however, have
the following guests to announce as they prepare to make their 1st
visit to the Pittsburgh Comicon:

- Artist John Totleben of Swamp Thing / Miracle Man fame with be
making his first appearance at the Pittsburgh Comicon.

- Likewise making his first appearance is Ghost Rider co-creator and
writer of Sgt. Fury and the Howling Commandos, Gary Friedrich.
Gary tried to make it last year but ran into a scheduling snag, so
we're happy he can join us this year.

-Lastly making her first appearance in Pittsburgh, courtesy of our
great friends at Catskill Comics, is Comic Book Hall of Famer,
Ramona Fradon - Artist of Aquaman, Metamorpho, Plastic Man,
Superfriends, Brenda Starr and others.
It will be an honor to welcome Ramona to the Burgh.

- Our Catskill Comics friends aren't just bringing Ramona however,
they will also have a full stable of their artists in attendance
including,
-Mike Grell, Hot off his new Warlord series from DC
-Current Ms. Marvel artist, Pat Olliffe
-Amazing Spider-Girl artist, Ron Frenz
-and CCG Card artist and artist of 2 recent issues of Starship
Troopers, Scott James

To check out the artwork of all these Catskill Artists and more visit:
www.catskillcomics.com

We also added our first Make-A-Wish Auction item to the website, A
beautiful Watchmen piece from FOC (friend of comicon) Jay Fife.

To check it out visit our site at www.pittsburghcomicon.com

We know that it's a long wait until September, but we hope to keep the
momentum going over the coming months to bring you a great Pittsburgh
Comicon,
  in the meantime, however, our pals at New Dimension Comics are easing
the pain a bit, with the

Pittsburgh Comics and Collectibles Show
May 31st from 11-5 inside Pittsburgh's Century III Mall
For details, please visit www.ndcomics.com

and I'll do my best to keep you informed in the months ahead on News
of Pittsburgh Comicon 2009.

Talk to you again soon,

One minor correction regarding the update - this will not be John
Totleben's first PCC appearance. He was at the show in 1999. Glad to
hear he is coming back!

Thanks for the update Pat, it's always nice to see first timers join
the Pittsburgh Comicon family.

Also, here's another link for May's New Dimension comicon at Century
III.
The mall is about 40 minutes from Monroeville, across town (but right
in my back yard - yeah!).
