I had to choose between doing one or the other cons. I just did Steel
City and I have been doing Pittsburgh alot longer so I will be a guest
at the Pittsburgh Comicon. All of the promoters are extremely nice and
very thoughtful of their guests it was a hard decision. Maybe Dominic
and Renee could think up a neat idea of maybe having some short of
shuttle bus between the two shows?

As always and God willing I will be their for my fans and the Make-A-
Wish foundation however, this is the most unintelligent business move
I have ever heard of. It's not going to take any of the guests away
from Comicon but it will split both shows attendance thus hurting
both shows in the specific cross over of fans that both share. I
can't believe that Steel City was not offered an alternative date.
It's my understanding that Pitt Con's dates have been set in stone
since April.

What on earth was Steel City thinking? The economy sucks as it is, in
PA. Neither show can flourish without the max attendance allocated
for one show at a time.

Bad business decision.

not to mention steel city wasn't the big blow out people had hoped for. i know a few people who had booths out there and said biznez was way down compared to the last one in monroeville. i know pisa is expanding their parking lot so that will help some but from what i was told steel city has booked pisa for the next 2-3 yrs and in the contract no other con of the same type is allowed to set up there.
so with sales down for vendors and artists why would they want to set something up on the same day as its biggest rival? only thing i can think of is due to pisa being a sports arena that's the only time they can be fit in and still be with in their contracts.

I'm in Monroeville all 3 days for Comicon. I know I could still
drive over to Steel City but I look forward ALL YEAR for this show.
So unless they book some artist or guest so monumental I'll wait for
the other two shows they put on. Ed's right the economey is bad and
this is not good for either show.... --- In

I dont like it anymore than any of you, but the shuttle idea is
actually really good. But, instead of complaining, has anyone else
asked the fine folks from Steel City Con why it had to be this way? Im
sure there is no spite involved.
I for one hope it works out well for everyone, and Id like to be able
to go to both shows, to be honest after one full day at the PCC youve
pretty much seen it all, an yeah its fun anyway, but the chance to go
to something that is slightly different and covers even more hobby
like areas and meet some cool guests an crazy stuff.
I give the SCC some credit, they get some different people each time
every 4 or 5 months.
Im not trying to stir the pot, But Id like to see a shuttle or bus
available to give all of us another option.

not to sound like a downer but i dont think a shuttle would work. who would fund this? the vendors at the scc didnt make a good profit so for scc to fund a shuttle means higher prices at the door and for vendor tables. for pcc to fund it might be ok bc they know they are going to be the real draw that weekend anyway, but given that why should they have a shuttle if they know they are the bigger draw? in turn that would also mean higher ticket prices, and i think theirs are high enough.

im sure a shuttle bus or 3, heck even a school bus or 3 wouldnt be cheap with the way gas is and traffic from monroville to harmerville has to suck no matter which route the bus takes its going to me a 30+ min drive due to alot of construction in a few spots. i know i for one dont want to be crammed on a packed bus for 30 minutes. im 6'6", me and bus seats dont equal fun. not to mention carrying bags of things i bought or having to sit on a bus in costume just isnt going to work at all the way mine is.

30 min to scc from pcc, then 30 min back or more plus waiting for the probly 2 bus's they have running just dont sound like fun to me. lucky for me i live between the two. it takes me just about the same time to get to either place from my house if i wanted to do both. just did the scc so ill be doing the pcc this time. missed the last one so i have to make up for it this time  lol

Dugger, no pot to stir I'm sure they had their reasons and would
rather
not be in direct competion. But on some level people are going to
make
a hard choice and neither show is going to offer a shuttle to the
others show and risk your patrons staying and spending all their cash
at
someone elses show. It's just unfortunate and I hope both shows do
well
but I will not do both. Thats not a knock on SCC I've lost count how
many of their shows I've been to, but just a couple weeks ago I had
to
decide do I go to Mid Ohio con or Screaming Tiki con and they were a
week apart and I still could only hit one. By all means do both if
you
can, I just think not everyone can or will.--- In

First off, I want to announce that I'll be doing art for another Star
Wars set coming soon, first got to finish Indy.

Second, it takes 15 minutes from the old showcase theatre off of
Kingston Dr, which is across the street from Sears, (down 3 miles
from the expo mart ), to get to the PISA.

I made the trip 3 days in a row as my first time being a guest for
Dominic. But!, since I am only doing the PCC. I will however, do the
next show for Dom if he asks after Pitt.

With a little more signage, and by April most of the construction
near the toll exit 48 should be done, the next few shows shouldn't be
bad at all.

I want to make the inaugeral show at the new Expo Mart something
special.

Third, and this is me pimping my own stuff again, I have copies of a
new print for sale. go to http://norvandell.deviantart.com and look
at Princess Leia Redux. Its an 18x12 on a felt style paper, only
20.00 and I pay for shipping.

I'll also have one pre done Secret Wars sketch cover and a blank
cover for Pitt available. I'll have a more complete list of new stuff
for the show, but the Leia print is ready now for any takers, 15 left.

Folks,

Just wanted to spread the word that the Michigan State Court of
Appeals upheld Judge Biernat's decision to grant Michael a new trial.
If anyone is interested, the court transcript of that hearing is

Just for clarification, the transcript referred to below is the
transcript of the September 12, 2008 hearing before Judge Biernat, not
the transcript before the State Court of Appeals. I read through the
entire transcript and feel embarrassed that I didn't make the
connection sooner. I work as a court stenographer and have done so
for the better part of five years now, and noted that pages one and
two were missing, so it took a little longer for everything to click.

Anywho, thank you for this transcript. I think it proves that Judge
Biernat still has a firm grasp over his courtroom and intends to be
fair in the upcoming new trial.

Yeah, sorry axxin. I should have made that a bit clearer. It is the
transcript of the hearing before Judge Biernat, where the Judge
originally granted Michael a new trial. It is not the decision of the
Appellate Court. I did not include the first two or the last page of
the transcript due to my discomfort of posting the addresses of the
parties involved and the signatures of the Court Reporter and Court Clerk.

Very True, I was aware of this as well for at least a year. I believe he has bigger fish to fry. Lets just hope that someone does take it over that has the ability to run such a cool show. I for one wish Dominic the best of luck either way.

Awhile back there was a request for who would you like to see at
Pittsburgh. After a little thought, it occurred to me that the
Avengers/Invaders limited "should" be ending around the time of
the '09 Con!

So.....why not celebrate with a guest list of creators that have left
their mark on this team up and the Invaders series of the 70's, 90's
and earlier this century.

From the Frankly "most" Fabulous run:
Roy Thomas
John Romita Sr.
Frank Springer
Alan Kupperberg
Dick Ayers
Rich Buckler
Don Glut
Ernie Chan
Joe Sinnott
Rick Hoberg
Allen Milgrom

Current Limited Series:
Jim Kreuger
Alex Ross (one can dream)
Steven Sadowski

The 2000's version:
Chuck Austen
Allan Jacobsen
C.P. Smith
Scott Kolins
Jorge Lucas

90's series and regular Con attendee:
Dave Hoover

Imagine the panels, the lines, the memories!

I don't know about anyone else, but the Invaders have always been a
favorite of mine. This would certainly be a Fan-MAN's dream lineup!

I certainly hope I have not missed anyone, I did a little
preliminary "wiki" searches....and I believe that all those listed
are thankfully still with us.

So how about it.....? Let's show them some 'Burgh hospitality and
thank them for the memories they have already provided!!!!

Let the call go out "Okay Pittsburgh, Here We Come"!!!

Steel City Con promoter to sell pop culture show
By Ron DaParma
TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Thursday, November 20, 2008

It's not for lack of success that Dominic Alessandria has decided to
sell his popular Steel City Con toy and pop culture convention business.

In fact, a relocation this year from the ExpoMart in Monroeville to a
larger space at the Pittsburgh Indoor Sports Arena in Harmar helped to
make the most recent event in late October one of the largest in the
show's 19-year history, he said Wednesday.

The three-day show had more than 200 exhibitors displaying items at
more than 500 tables -- about 100 more than recent shows at the
smaller Monroeville site -- said Alessandria, who is seeking buyers.

He is the sole owner and promoter of the convention, which he runs two
to three times each year through his company Orangestone Promotions
Inc., based in Ross. He said the shows have attracted between 3,000
and 4,500 people each.

At the Harmar site, it has more than 90,000 square feet of space to
display such items as new and vintage toys, comic books, sci-fi/horror
toys, and television, movie and sports memorabilia. That's about three
times the space it had at the ExpoMart.

"The show next year will celebrate its 20-year anniversary and is the
largest of its kind in Pennsylvania and one of the top five shows in
the country. But for personal reasons, I think it's time to move on,"
he said.

Alessandria, who once served as general manager for a major retail
department store, said he has decided to pursue another opportunity in
retailing that he declined to disclose.

Steel City Con is a profitable business, drawing revenue from gate
receipts and fees charged to vendors for table space, he said, without
disclosing specifics.

"The show is priced to sell quickly," Alessandria said. "Typically
when a company sells a business the asking price is usually four to
five times the annual revenue, but I'm only seeking a price equal to
less than one year's revenue."

He declined to disclose an asking price. But more than 30 parties have
already contacted him, Alessandria said.

"I think people will be interested," said Kelly Simon of Kelly Simon
Promotions in Westmoreland County.

Simon produces a number of home, law enforcement and other trade shows
at the Laurel Highlands Event Center at the Westmoreland Mall Annex at
Westmoreland Mall.

I just called the Radisson in Monroeville because I noticed that their
online booking was offline.

I got a recorded message stating that the Radisson is undergoing
renovation and will be closed until early 2009. They are still
accepting space bookings until November 30th.

Hope that helps anyone trying to make early reservations for Comicon.

Problem with the Rad, is that they will be a high class hoity toity
joint, one of those several hundred dollar a night places.

This is from my wifes cousin who lives just blocks away. And as of the
Steel City show when I drove by the Rad, it may be awhile before
anything is going on with them, longer than they say possibly.
