I'm currently an 'aromatic'-type smoker, at least my tobacco is, but
I -do- shower every day too! ;)

I'd like to expand my enjoyment.

I've tried some Latakia mixes in the past, but found it was like
smoking an old, used gym sock from my high school days...

Can anyone suggest some specific brands that I can try out as
introductions to each of the 'big 3': Latakia, Perique, and oriental
mixutes?

Thanks!

for me, my favorite of the three are Mcclelland's mixture number one,
which is an oriental/virginia i think. very good intro. mix,
illsted's own mixture no. 88 which is a great light english-also try
dunhill's early morning pipe. as far as perique, i'd have to say
haddo's delight. i personally don't like it, but everybody else
seems to, and i don't really know any tobaccos off hand with
perique. you could try solani 369 which is a good one. it's kind of
an aromatic, with virginia and perique, check it out, it's one of my
favorites.

I'm not much for latakia blends, but will try the other two:

For a nice perique blend:

GLPease's Haddo's Delight
C&D Bayou Morning
McClelland's 2015

A good oriental:

McClelland's 2020

Some nice Virginias:

McClelland's Dark Star (this is what all other stoved Virginias
aspire to be)
GLPease Cumberland (actually driven by Kentucky)
Rattray's Brown Clunee
Rattray's Hal O'The Wynd (strong!)
McClelland's 2035
McClelland's 5115
C&D/YPSC's Back Porch
McCranie's Owner's Choice

For an introduction to perique, I would suggest McClelland's bulk 2015, for an
introduction to latakia, try Ilsted's #88. Oriental blends can have a wide
range, but I like to think of them as blends with Turkish tobaccos. A good
blend to experience the Turkish tobaccos, IMO, is McClelland's Arcadia. HTH

Gino,

I'm in the process of "coming over" from mostly aromatics also, and I
have found Astley's #2, a Va/Perique blend to be very satisfying.
Check out http://tobaccoreviews.com for reviews of it. I'm actually
leaning towards it as an all-day smoke, at least until something else
comes along.

Try Astleyıs 109. I smoke mostly aromatics (gasp), and found 109 to be an

For Latakia Blends, I'd suggest McClelland's Frog Morton On The Town and GL
Pease Renaissance. For Perique Blends, I suggest Dan Tobacco's Limerick, Solani
633 and Escudo, all excellent in their own right. I personally Do not like
Oriental dominated blends, so I cannot make any suggestions, sorry! JohnnyFlake

I've had a Peterson for about 27 year's,(Still going strong)

That even went overboard in sea water from my boat.I dried it out &
polished it,it was as good as new. Before that I had a Dunhill that
wore out & fell apart after only 14 month's!

Gino,

I'll second Ed on Astley's #2. It is a very light, sweet, fruity-tasting (like
apricots and figs) tobacco.

The other end of the perique spectrum is tangy and "spicy". For this, McC 2015.

Haddo's Delight falls somewhere between the two for me. All three are Yummy

Also: Peter Heinrichs Special Selektion Curly Coins, Three Nuns, and A&C
Petersen Caledonian No. 499

For VA/Orientals: McClelland Arcadia, GLP Cairo

For VA/Latakia: Torben Dansk #3 (CAO/Dan Tobacco), Frog Morton on the Town are
both light in Latakia. Also, try Rattray's Red Rapparree and perhaps A&C
Petersen Caledonian No. 466. If you like any of these, you'll be ready for
latakia in larger doses.

As to the "Big 3" idea, it leaves out Burley blends, straight Virginias (flakes,
ribbons). I think you might find Rattray's Hal O' The Wynd, Old Gowrie, Marlin
Flake and Black Virginia, DAN's Hamborger Veermaster and Malthouse Founder's
Reserve, McClelland 5100 and 5115, and GL Pease's Barbary Coast all very
enjoyable, as well.

Best,

During the Wednesday I commented that I though I was the only pipe
smoker in Astoria, or at least the only public one. The reason for
this feeling is that I've never seen another pipe smoker in the time
I've been here, about about a year. However, today all that changed.
I actually saw someone else smoking a pipe. Unfortunately he was in
another pickup and I didn't get the chance to meet him. I will be on
the outlook for him, or another one, if such a person exists. I was
just reading a thread on ASP about the lack of public pipe smoker
sightings.
It does seem that it was much more obvious when I started in the 60's.
Are we really invisible in the world? Should we make our presence
known or prepare to enter the underworld to avoid the eyes of the
smoke police? I'm trying to amass enough tobacco for the latter
while hoping
for the best.

Hi Gino,

I'm not a big latakia freak either (and am I the only one who finds Latakia
unsatisfying as far as nicotine content goes?) but one worth a try if you can
get it is W O Larsen's Selected Blend No. 20 Broad Blend. It's largely fairly
sweet and mild VA with just a delicious smokey hint of Latakia.

Lowman, Ilsted's #88 has been one of my favorites for a long time, and is good
when I don't want a blend with so much latakia that it overpowers the rest of
the tobaccos in a blend. That's why I think it is such a good one to recommend
to introduce a smoker to the character that latakia can add to a blend.

Dear Howard
I thought I was the only person who ever wondered about the fact that
you never see, or rarely anyway, another pipe smoker in public. I
only rarely see another guy smoke his pipe in public. I think this
is true because these days so many are worried about, to use our
words, "the smoke police." When I was a young man in the 50's and
60's you saw pipe smokers in public every day, sometimes several
times a day. You always saw business men and other of course sit at
lunch puffing on their pipes, even in their offices and work places.
It is rare today that you see a pipe smoker in public anymore. As I
view the news when it comes to we pipe smokers, and smokers in
general, I believe you will see less and less of people smoking in
public. Just my thougts.
Sincerely
Mike

I picked up a nice pouch from a local place called "Pipes and
Pleaures" (http://www.pipesandpleasures.com/pipes/). It holds two
pipes, has a snap-out tobacco pouch, a sleeve for a tamper, and two
small side pockets for lighter, etc (can't quit fit in a cleaner
without bending it first).

They have several pouched on thier site, but I didn't see the one I
got. If you call them they might be able to help you out (1-800-828-
2535). It's black with a green strip (not an obnoxious green - kind
of a hunter green), and if I remember right it cost about $25. They
also give discounts to NASPC members.

My only "complaint" with it is that a couple of my favorite pipes are
on the larger side and it's tough to fit two of them in.

I personally don't give a rat's behind about the smoke police. When I
feel like smoking a pipe, so long as I'm not in a "NO SMOKING" area,
I light up. I'm not going to blow smoke in anyone's face, but neither
am I going to crawl into a hiding hole.
