Is anyone planning to watch Avatar this weekend? I have been watching the
trailers and I wonder if finally we have the technology to make a Xanth movie a
reality?

I will be watching it hopefully this weekend and let you know what I think but
if other of you are going, I will love to hear your opinion too.

My big worry with Avatar that it cost a lot of money to make so I don't know any
study will risk that kind of money for Xanth, but a girl can dream :-)

I will plant a tree in her memory. I feel so bad for the family. I hope they are
holding up okay. It is the hardest thing in the world to lose a child. I will
pray for her daughter.

     Hi folks,

I found this really sad news at Piers' Hi Piers website,

   SapTimber 2009
   HI-

Our elder daughter, Penelope Carolyn Jacob, died of apparent respiratory
paralysis on September 3, 2009. She is survived by her husband John, eight year
old daughter Logan, her sister Cheryl, and us, her parents. We are somewhat in
shock, and our attendance to other matters, such as correspondence, may suffer
for a while. Penny lived in Oregon, and was in rehabilitation following brain
surgery for melanoma that had metastasized there, pressing on nerves that
controlled her right side, paralyzing it. She had trouble breathing, then was
abruptly gone. We are helping her family in whatever ways we can, and Cheryl is
there for the month to help also. I will have a more complete discussion in my
OctOgre 2009 HiPiers column.

There will be no funeral or service, per her preference. Those who would like
to contribute may do so by planting a tree in their neighborhood, as Penny loved
trees, or a contribution in her name to the Eugene Waldorf School, 1350 McLean
Blvd., Eugene, OR 97405. There is no obligation.
   ---------------------------------

I am shocked to say the least with this news. I feel that I grow up with Penny
(Penelope) while I read Piers' Xanth and it sadden me that she is gone. I really
don't have much words to describe how I feel.

   That is all,
   Marisol

Hi Beth,

that is a lovely idea too and with a lot of merit. I think the important thing
is that people do what they feel right to do to memorialize Penny.

Whatever people decide to do this year would be great. I just ask that people
send me images of whatever you did so I can compile something to send to Piers.

Thanks again for your ideas and support!
Cordially,
Marisol

My Religious tradition has a special ceremony on the year anniversary of a

I think I know just the spot for a "Penny" tree. I think I may have to put a
bench by it to have a place to read as well. I live in Washington, and the
ground gets a little wet. Thanks, Shawndra

Hi Daniel,

That is a better idea than just sending a card I think. But, I still will like
to send a collage of pictures of people planting a tree in Penny's honor at some
point in time, if people are interested in doing that. Just email your pick of
when and where you plant it.

Thanks Daniel! I am glad that your publishing business is doing so well!

I talked to Piers the day he got the news. While she was still sick, she
was recovering from the surgery fine it seemed.

Life's fragile, handle it with care.

I'll be visiting Piers and his wife in October and will send along the
condolences of PATH.

On another note, we just acquired another publishing company, Hard Shell
Word Factory, so we have four now.

Mundania Press (http://www.mundania.com)

Phaze Books (http://www.phaze.com)

Awe-Struck Publishing (http://www.awe-struck.net)

Hard Shell Word Factory (http://www.hardshell.com)

We're designing a new website for Hard Shell. We have a new webmaster who
lives in Norway now. He's designed the Awe-Struck site, and completely
redid the Mundania site with a new look and new programming. He's working
on replacing the Phaze site (going all PHP), and making the new Hard Shell
site. We keep him busy!

Remember that PATH members get a 25% discount all the time. Enter PATH25 as
a coupon code. (Not to be a sales pitch here, but a reminder.)

I like both suggestions.

Actually, my husband and I recently had a house built on 3.8 acres of
mostly trees, and we are in fact thinking of planting a few more. So we
could pick one for Penny when we manage to plant one next.

I wonder if she'll turn up in one of Piers' next Xanth books, meeting her

Princess Ivy. I'm so sad to hear she's died. Hope Piers and the rest
of the family are holding up as well as possible.

I wonder what will happen to that character. Will a tragic death happen in
the Xanth Royal Family? I forgot, was Penny the model for Tandy or Ivy? I read
that the reason Humfrey disapeared for a while was because he was based on
Piers' editor and when he got a new editor he had a hard time managing writing
about the gnome. I hope that Ivy won't have to disapear to the realm of dreams
because of this.

Those who would like to
contribute may do so by planting a tree in their neighborhood, as Penny loved
trees, or a contribution in her name to the Eugene Waldorf School, 1350 McLean
Blvd., Eugene, OR 97405. There is no obligation.
------------ --------- --------- ---

I am shocked to say the least with this news. I feel that I grow up with Penny
(Penelope) while I read Piers' Xanth and it sadden me that she is gone. I really
don't have much words to describe how I feel.

That is all,
Marisol

I'm glad you like the series, it's been one of my favourites. I do have to say
I prefer the first three books to the rest of the series, but they're still a
great read.

If you haven't read the Incarnations of Immortality series yet (starting with
"On a Pale Horse"), try that next, you'll love it.

Greetings from Belgium,

Hans

I have been gone a little longer than I thought. I got into the Apprentice Adept
series, and now that I have read four of the seven books, I am waiting for the
library to catch up. I think Piers Anthony has done it again. I was worried that
I wouldn't have the mundane/xanth opposite univers feel, but this series is just
that. I love the total technology vs magic. I can't wait for book five.

Also, never take reverse wood for granted; it doesn't always reverse what you
think it will reverse. If Bink picks up reverse wood, it may give him
protection from non-magical things (which could be just what he needs).

I believe it was King Trent that pointed out that bink's talent is what
made the Demon Xanth return to a place he was familier with after the rules
that the other demons had changed. His talent was still working in a way
when he was battling down in the cavern against his allies. It also was
working when he wounded Tandy ( i think that is her name) so she would no longer
be in love with him so he could go home to his wife and child. In a sense
Bink talent is one of the most powerful and also one of the weakest in
xanth. Once someone knows the nature of his talent it is worthless. but as
long as it is unknown he has inmense protection.

In a sense his talent is sentient in the fact that it works to keep it self
concealed and Bink alive and happy. It provides means to which bink can
survive so it can survive. In Nightmare he was put into the gourd because
his talent felt it would cause him any lasting harm.

Since Bink's talent works without him really knowing (or later,
regardless of him knowing or wanting it to) it would depend on the
situation. I think it would overrule Reverse Wood because it could be
harmful though, but if for some reason his talent found it beneficial to
