“Dialog Antar Agama”*
“The role of religions in maintaining peace in
Indonesia”
Indonesia is a diverse nation. There are hundreds of
ethnic groups and races, dozens of ethnic languages,
and many different religions that have been existed in
the archipelagic country. This diversity, however,
has become a significant source of conflict. Religion,
for example, is the reason behind many regional and
local conflicts, such as in Maluku and Central
Sulawesi. After Suharto’s repressive regime
collapsed, many restrictions on religious-based
criticisms have been lifted. Many organizations
including political parties adopt religion as its
basic ideology and abandon the secular basis Pancasila
that has been promoted by Suharto regime as the new
way of life for a diverse Indonesia. Despite the fact
that the reform movement advances political freedom,
it also gives rise to the radical religious movements.
In fact, religion should not be blamed for the
regional conflicts because no religion encourages the
acts of violence. All religions expect its believers
to respect humanity, and therefore hurting or killing
others is prohibited. Consequently, religion can be
applied as a mean for peaceful resolutions in those
conflicts. Indonesians of all religions must see the
similarities and tolerate the differences among them.
Through tireless effort for dialogues, formal and
informal leaders including intellectuals can help
strengthening the social cohesion and inter-faith
trust while reducing the paranoid among the small band
of radicals who use religion as its source of hate and
suspicion.
