This is a discussion group for individuals or organisations interested to know about and/or contribute
to the conservation and development of Perlis State Park, Perlis, Malaysia.

The Park lies along the western border of Perlis, where Peninsular Malaysia meets Thailand. It covers an area of about 5000 ha
consisting mainly of forests on limestone with distinctive Thai-Burmese influence. The Nakawan limestone range in the park area is of the Setul Formation
and has characteristically steep cliffs separated by enclosed valleys called wangs. This
limestone range contains many caves of various sizes.

The ecosystem of the Nakawan range is very diverse,
with habitats ranging from subterranean streams to freshwater lake and
from forests of tall dipterocarp trees to scrubland.

There is also a great diversity of fauna and flora including
more than 100 species of birds, the rare
serow or mountain goat and the stump-tailed macaque.
There are also many plant species found only on
limestone hills, some of which are endemic to Perlis i.e.
not found anywhere else in the world.

The Perlis State Park Project is a 3-year project
commencing 1st January 2000. The Implementing Agency
the State of Perlis, Malaysia. The Perlis State Park Project is a 3-year project commencing 2000. The Implementation Agency is the Perlis State Forestry
Department while the Funding Agency is the Danish Cooperation for Environment and Development. Technical assistance for the project is provided by World Wide Fund for Nature Malaysia (WWF Malaysia).

The Overall Development Objective of the project is to contribute to the conservation of biodiversity in Malaysia, specifically conservation of the biodiversity of the Nakawan Range.
The Immediate Objective of the project is that the
Perlis State Forestry Department is adequately equipped
to fully protect and successfully manage
and operate the Perlis State Park.
