Site News: Expect more visitors this month
http://www.pepysdiary.com/about/archive/2012/05/01/13642.php

As we approach the end of the diary there's a chance this site will attract some publicity. I'm not going out of my way to get lots of coverage, but then I didn't when the site started and there was quite a bit! I mention this because if there is publicity then we will have many more visitors to our friendly part of the web.

If this happens there might be more annotations, more often-answered questions asked, more off-topic chatter... After all this time it *might* feel like our little home is suddenly swamped with strangers. I'm sure you'll all be helpful where appropriate -- this is more a warning that we might feel a bit overwhelmed by interlopers.

Hopefully, it'll all be fine and there'll be nothing to worry about, but I didn't want any regulars -- whether frequent annotators or long-time lurkers -- to be surprised and annoyed by a rush of people who haven't been following Sam's journey for months or years. Be patient, and remember it's their loss that they've only just arrived!

Also don't forget the Pepys' Diary group on Yahoo <http://groups.yahoo.com/group/pepysdiary/> should you need to discuss anything slightly more off-topic or away from the crowds. I hope you all enjoy the final stretch.

Celebrate Pepys' 378th birthday in Upperville, VA

Andrew Hamilton writes about a meeting in March…

Thanks to Michael Robinson, we have arranged March 13 at 5 PM at the Hunter’s Head [Tavern] in Upperville, Va., as a time and place to celebrate Sam’s 378th birthday. So far Todd Bernhardt and wife and Rex Gordon have accepted, along with several of my family, Michael and myself. We cordially invite other Pepysians to join us in a venison pasty and a toast to Sam. RSVP to Andrew Hamilton at jahamiltonjr@... before Feb. 23 so we can be sure of adequate provender.

So, if you’re able to get there, drop Andrew a line!

-------------

In the event, Michael, Andrew and I were there, along with a hearty handful of non-posting Pepysians and friends.

The plan was for Andrew to Skype Phil in the UK so Phil could join us electronically.  Turned out the WiFi signal where we were was insufficient for that, but Andrew and Phil did exchange several emails.

It was, in any case, about the meal together and the fellowship afterwards.

Here are pics of the Hunter's Head Tavern and the meal, courtesy of Merry Bruns–Bray, the photographer.

Site News: Roll Call. Say hello!

Some time ago Laura K suggested we have a roll call for readers of the diary to say hello. This seems like a good time.

Whether you're a regular annotator, or have been quietly reading along since the beginning, or have only recently joined us, please do post a comment below and say hello to your fellow readers around the world!

You don't need to write much. As Laura suggested, just let us know where you're from, how long you've been reading, and anything else you'd like to share.

If you haven't posted anything before, don't overlook the "What is Samuel's surname?" question in the form that helps filter out the spammers. And note that the first time you submit the form you'll see a preview of your comment, and then you'll need to click the "Post" button to finally submit it.

Hello!

I'm going through tidying up some of the earliest diary entries, as they have
lots of links missing. He often refers to "my office" but I assume at this
point, while he was living on Axe Yard, it wasn't the Navy Office on Seething
Lane - it sounds like he's still around Westminster.

So does anyone have any idea where "my office" might be in those days?

Thanks,
Phil

Hi Phil,

Sam worked as a personal employee (a clerk) for George Downing, an official (Teller of the Receipt 1656-84) at the Exchequer, which occupied a series of buildings within the palace of Westminster, on the east side of New Palace Yard.

From the L&M Companion, good info in the Exchequer entry.

He also worked personally for Edward Montagu (later Lord Sandwich).

Best,
Pauline

I don't know the answer, but just another coincidence of Sam's life was that Axe Yard was sited where Downing St is today, named after that same George Downing.

Dear Phil,

Could we also have a space to all come with moments we remember most in the diary or in our reading together (annotating)?

Maybe called My Favorite Moment or This I'll Most Remember of This Time Together or Favorite Things in There Diary Years Together.

Meanwhile I am trying to search one of mine, but Movable Type just incurs errors:  "an error occurred."  Search instructions welcome!

Phil, deep thanks,

Hi,

Good idea Pauline - that occurred to me a while ago but I'd forgotten all about it. I'll post something at the weekend, so get your thinking (or remembering) caps on!

Sorry about the Movable Type search errors... it's never been that super and I fear it's groaning under the amount of content these days.

An alternative is to search on Google, and restrict the search to the Pepys site. eg, search for:

site:pepysdiary.com "Axe Yard"

Hope that helps,
Phil

Ahh, brilliant, thanks Pauline. After all these years I still get confused by the details of Sam's long-ago life!  I'll go through and correct early references to the Navy Office as his place of work.

Pepys Commemoration Service, 25 May

This coming Friday, 25 May, there's a commemoration service at noon at St Olave's church <(http://www.sanctuaryinthecity.net/Pepys-and-Faith-%E2%80%93-Annual-Pepys-Commemoration-%E2%80%93-25-May-2012-at-12-noon-News.htm>:

----
"Since 1927 (allowing for some years' interruption following the catastrophic bombing of April 1941) St Olave's has held an annual service to commemorate its most illustrious former parishioner, Samuel Pepys. The service is organised in association with The Samuel Pepys Club.

The service traditionally features an address on aspects of Pepys, his life and times and the church has been honoured to welcome a number of extremely fine speakers over the years.

This year we will be pleased to have with us Prof. Peter McCullough of Oxford University, who will speaking on the subject “Pepys and Faith”. This is a subject which we have wanted to address for a number of years and are very glad that Prof. McCullough has been able to accept our invitation on this occasion."
----

It is apparently open to anyone who wishes to go, so do pop along if you're in town and nearby!

Thanks to Glyn Thomas and Peter Easton for this.

A collection of maritime inscriptions dating back to the early 1600s have been found on the coast of Madagascar by Flinders University researchers.

Discovery of long forgotten messages

Dr Wendy van Duivenvoorde, a lecturer in maritime archaeology, returned from the world’s fourth largest island last month with evidence of more than 40 inscriptions from Dutch sailing ships that once traversed the region en-route to South East Asia.

The team of researchers, including Flinders archaeology research associate Mark Polzer and Jane Fyfe, a PhD candidate and rock art specialist from the University of Western Australia, discovered the messages carved into rock outcrops and boulders on an island in the Bay of Antongil, on the northeast corner of Madagascar.

While some of the inscriptions were originally found in the 1920s, researchers have always believed there were no more than a dozen “postal stones”.

Dr van Duivenvoorde said the inscriptions, which were carved into the rocks between 1601 and 1657, offered important insights into early Dutch seafaring to the Indies, and were a unique example of Dutch cultural heritage overseas.

A means of communicating across the oceans

They started using the beach as a communications area by inscribing messages on the rock faces and frequently leaving letters for other ships to pick up

“In the 1500s, the Portuguese were the only Europeans who knew the route to South East Asia so they supplied all the spices and exotica to the Netherlands,” Dr van Duivenvoorde said.

“The Dutch made their way to Batavia, which is modern day Jakarta, for the first time in 1595 but they didn’t have any systems in place to communicate via other Dutch ships to send messages back home and relay their last port of call,” she said.

“From the first voyage on, they went to a small beach in the Antongil Bay because they knew from the Portuguese that they could get fresh water there and that it was the only place in the bay where they could anchor safely to ride out a storm or repair a ship.

“They started using the beach as a communications area by inscribing messages on the rock faces and frequently leaving letters for other ships to pick up.

“Basically it was like an early postal system.”

Protecting remarkable stories

Dr van Duivenvoorde said the messages – left by at least 13 different ships – included official communications that recorded the names of ships and the times and dates of their arrivals, as well as unofficial messages left by higher-ranked seamen, who chiselled their names into the stone.

“One inscription reveals that the ship Middelburg reached the bay after a cyclone in 1625, without masts, and was anchored there for a good seven months while it was being repaired,” she said.

“It’s quite amazing to think that they managed to ‘sail’ into the bay without masts and sails.”

While the team is still in the process of transcribing and studying the inscriptions, Dr van Duivenvoorde said she hoped to return to Madagascar in 2013 to create a 3D rendering and to lobby relevant authorities for cultural heritage protection.

It’s definitely under threat from sea erosion, cyclones and rain, as well as from jungle vegetation and moss growing on the rocks which have faded the inscriptions over time.

“I’m also hoping our discovery will reinvigorate interest in the stones and lead to better education for local tourist guides – these inscriptions have been forgotten for decades and even specialists who study postal stones from this period do not mention them in their books.”

Rippin' the Rainbow a New One

We tear into this show with a dark scene from 1665.

A young Isaac Newton, hoping to ride out the plague by heading to the country to puzzle over the deep mysteries of the universe, finds himself wondering about light. And vision. He wants to get to the bottom of where color comes from--is it a physical property in the outside world, or something created back inside your eyeball somewhere? James Gleick explains how Newton unlocked the mystery of the rainbow. And, as Victoria Finlay tells us, sucked the poetry out of the heavens.

Jonah Lehrer restores some of the lost magic by way of Goethe--who turned a simple observation into a deep thought: even though color starts in the physical world, it is finished in our minds.

Which, thanks to Mark Changizi, brings us to a very serious question: what do dogs see when they look at the rainbow? We humans see seven colors: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet (ROYGBiV!). But as Thomas Cronin and Jay Neitz--two guys who study vision--explain, that's just a sliver of the spectrum. Along the way, we get some help imagining the rainbow from a choir, and we meet this little sea creature, who with 16 color receptors, blows the rest of us earthlings out of the water:

"Mr Isaacke Houblon - that handsome man - prettily dressed and dirty at his door in Dowgate..." (2.9.66)  A nice alliteration on a desperate day. I've often wandered down Dowgate and tried to imagine the scene. But there are so many: from 1665 good Dr Burnett; the coachman at Holborn who can go no further; Proctor the Islington vintner who put on great entertainments, the poor ale-seller at Westminster Hall who lost all his family. Where to stop?

Hi everyone,

By this stage I'm assuming it's not too much of a SPOILER to mention that
Thursday's diary entry is, er, special.

I have a question for you though... I had planned to post the entry (and the
final @samuelpepys tweets) at (and leading up to) the usual time of 11pm UK
time. I like the consistency of this.

However, I know it means that some people in the UK will miss the tweets because
it's late. So I was wondering about shifting the posting of the entry, and the
final tweets, forward to maybe 9pm UK time.

What do you think? Any preferences or thoughts?

Phil

Hi everyone,

By this stage I'm assuming it's not too much of a SPOILER to mention that Thursday's diary entry is, er, special.

I have a question for you though... I had planned to post the entry (and the final @samuelpepys tweets) at (and leading up to) the usual time of 11pm UK time. I like the consistency of this.

However, I know it means that some people in the UK will miss the tweets because it's late. So I was wondering about shifting the posting of the entry, and the final tweets, forward to maybe 9pm UK time.

What do you think? Any preferences or thoughts?

Belated improvements
http://www.pepysdiary.com/about/archive/2012/05/29/13835.php

Over the past couple of weeks I’ve been going through my neglected list of things on the site I’ve been meaning to fix or add. Better (very) late than never! Here’s what I’ve been doing:

Added overlays to maps

In any of the maps on the site (like this one: http://www.pepysdiary.com/background/maps/?c=28 ) there is now 'Pepys overlays...' button at the top-right. Clicking this lets you switch on three overlays to give a better idea of aspects of Pepys' London: the route of the City wall; the area that was damaged by the Great Fire; and the area that London's buildings covered. I've tried to be accurate but it's not like accurate historical research! The extent of buildings is particularly rough, but hopefully gives an idea of scale.

Added Annotations to the exported data

When I originally created <http://www.pepysdiary.com/about/archive/2011/01/22/12085.php> a computer-readable export of lots of the data behind the site, some people hoped I would add annotations, because they're such an important part of the whole experience. I've now included these (increasing the size of the zip file from 8MB to 20MB!). <http://www.pepysdiary.com/export/json/README.html>

Improvents to first three months of the Diary

When this site started I wasn't as rigorous as I am today about adding links from Diary entries to Encyclopedia topics. But I've now been through the first three months' worth of entries and brought them up to the standard of recent entries.

Fixed the pop-up tips on iPad etc

The little panels that appear in Diary entries when you move your cursor over a link have always been a problem on devices like iPads -- they would never disappear. They should now work better: Touch a link to make the panel appear, then touch elsewhere for it to disappear. Or touch the link again to go to that page.

Added references to letters

Although Encyclopedia topics show when that topic was referenced in Diary entries, there was never a similar feature for when a topic was referenced in Pepys' letters <http://www.pepysdiary.com/letters/>. Now there is, for example on the page for Erith in Kent <http://www.pepysdiary.com/p/2697.php#references>, which was mentioned in three of the letters from John Evelyn we have on the site.

Added diary references to Pepys' wealth

While we've had a page that graphs Pepys' wealth over time, it didn't have references to specific Diary entries. Now it does: <http://www.pepysdiary.com/p/9548.php#references>

Added a Whitehall Palace map

I've added a category to the large maps that groups all the individual places Pepys has mentioned in Whitehall Palace: <http://www.pepysdiary.com/background/maps/?c=180>

Tidied up the list of London taverns

The Encyclopedia page that lists taverns in London <http://www.pepysdiary.com/background/places/london/taverns.php> had got rather confused, with many taverns from elsewhere in the country. Now it only includes London locations, with the others now on the Rest of Britain <http://www.pepysdiary.com/background/places/britain.php> page (which could probably do with some reorganisation itself).

And that's all! I wish I'd done some of these a lot sooner, but you can't do everything at once. Hopefully they'll be a benefit in the future.

Thursday's entry will appear two hours earlier

Usually diary entries appear at 11pm UK time, sort of simulating the idea that Pepys wrote it at the end of his day. I'm loath to break with this near decade-long tradition, but Thursday's entry will appear two hours early, at 9pm UK time. This is so that readers in the UK are more likely to be able to read it "live", should they wish to do so. I hope this doesn't spoil the routine of anyone too much!

Phil,

You have been busy!  These are helpful: e.g. one can readily see how much of London-within-the-walls was destroyed by the fire and how fortunate the area around the Tower, incl Seething Lane was to escape the burn -- thanks to the blown-up-houses firebreak!

May we also expect to have at some point  a final Google-enabled data summary of the site stats (numbers and locations of views and viewers' global locations, etc.)?

Thanks for all you've done, and congratulations on this unprecedented -- perhaps singular -- accomplishment!

Terry

Yes, I'll put something together, either this weekend or in a couple of weeks, depending on time allowing!

Thank you, thank you, Phil! Enhancing our Diary experience as ever! If anyone does this with someone else's diaries (Boswell??), she/he now has a model of How To Do It - you have now set the Gold Standard, I think. Much appreciated.
