I am going to take a shot at doing a craft show in September. I would like to know from some of you that have done church shows, about how many pens should I have with me and what type sells best at these shows,(I'm thinking wasp-waist type slim line).

This is a really hard question, because all shows will be different. You could do this show this year, and just sell a ton of stuff, and there be one style that just does very well,, and the following year, just be a flop in general, and be lucky to break even. So, it really is a mystical thing. Just go with an open mind, and a Varity of styles and product..

Good luck.

Patrick, I've only done one Church craft show. If it hadn't been for the $10 seam rippers I wouldn't have made my entry fee. All shows are different, I'd bring a several styles and price ranges and not worry too much on quantity. Set up a nice display and be friendly. Be sure to have good writing paper and put pens in the their hands. I usually have a few pens loaded with Private Reserve refills and let the customers feel and see the difference. Those refills sell pens. Good luck and let us know how you faired. dennis

I have sold everything from basic slimlines to Emperors at church craft shows. I have some that I do year after year because I make decent bucks at them.  I take my full inventory. You never can tell what will sell. I do go to some upper income area church shows so your mileage may vary.

Here is what I use for horizontal drilling and squaring on the Shopsmith. I got the idea from a commercial version I had seen for squaring only. I use one side for drilling, then turn the entire miter bar around and slide in backwards for squaring/sanding.

I just added the toggle clamps and haven't used it since. It bit my fingers a couple of times before. The small toggle clamp is for holding the replaceable scrap wood block.

I just used some scrap 1/4 thick aluminum angle iron, the scrap piece of wood, a bolt with the head cut off, and some hanger bolts and Rockler overcenter clamps to attach to the miter gauge.

Thanks,
Cory

Just getting caught up and thought I would and some more info. Looking for coloring to tint epoxies and resins. The real stuff comes in kits and assorted colors both in transparent and opaque. That being said a little does go a long way, and the depth of color is adjusted by the amount of color you add.
Traditional whiting agent is gypsum powder same stuff that makes Gesso.  You can used marble powder also. Aniline dyes or intense mixing colors. Like these at http://www.leevalley.com/US/wood/page.aspx?p=20082&cat=1,190,42942 Or a lot of other wood working suppliers.

Online big box art suppliers like Dick Blick's will have a host of other materials that can be added to resins and epoxies. From bronzing powders a generic names for metal powders of all types. a word of caution on the metal powders they are like most other extreme fine dusts flammable.

They also have powdered stone and of course an assortment of resins. The other nice thing about their site they are a great source of information and technical.

just an fyi to using Aniline dyes, you mix them in alcohol to dye woods not
water. and oh my god when they say permanent dye it is an understatement. I live
5 minutes from comar a company who makes a corian material. I get pieces for
pens and also make pot pads to give away at Christmas. well i got some of the
Aniline dye on one of my pot pads and it still will not come off. I use it in
the shop to mix stuff on since it can be cleaned so easily, but the only way I
am gonna get the dye off it is to sand it.

alcohol is to keep the wood from deforming or something like that. it says why

I have been turning pens for many years now and I am still amazed that a pen kit
that weighs next to nothing e.g. cigar pen and the blanks that go with it
(anything from acrylic to wood) also seem to weigh very little yet when they are
finished they seem to get very heavy. Has anyone ever done a chart or anything
else that goes to the weight of finished pens? Thanks folks for answering. Joe

No chart, but I have been paying attention to pen weight for a long time.  And I think you are wrong when you say a cigar pen kit weighs next to nothing...  most of the weight comes indeed from the hardware!  You can influence the weight to a small effect by not creating extra bulges but keeping the profile relatively slim.  You can even calculate the weight of a pen, using the specific weight of wood or whatever material you use, and get VERY close.

I just weighed a few cigar pens.  A cigar pen kit weighs about 46g (including plastic baggies and refill :-).  A finished cigar pen made out of non-stabilized wood weighs 49g.  Stabilized wood 41g.  Deer antler, turned a little fuller profile, 57g.  The lightest stock fountain pen is the original El Grande.  Variations on the El Grande all weigh a little more as more plastic parts are replace by metal.

Rich,
You say a finished cigar made with stabilized wood weighed 41g. How can it weigh
less that the parts you said weigh 46g?

Just wanted to remind anyone planning to attend the DC Pen Show, that my Summer
Sale is still on, and I will be sharing a booth with Bertram's Inkwell, usually
sets up in the 2nd room, before the main room...usually. I will be bringing with
me Schmidt parts and refills, and my plastic blanks.

If you have never been to the DC Pen Show, it is the largest pen show of its
kind in the world, with usually over 200 vendors. There are a few pen kit
turners who usually attend including Alan Shaw and Barry Gross, but the show is
mainly geared for the new and vintage pen collector. It can be an experience
that can be overwhelming and tiring. There are only a few vendors that have any
kind of supplies, so I have restocked my show inventories from the Miami show,
where plastics were the big seller.

Please stop by and say "Hi" even if you don't need anything.

I attended Kurt's class last summer. I came home with lots of new skills that
I didn't think could be accomplished. We had beginners as well as many years

Was wondering if anyone had the instructions for the Euro Filigree Pen from
Craft Supplies. I have some kits that I would like to make but don't have the
instructions. I'm sure I would "wing" it but it would be nice to follow some
kind of instructions.

Hi Arvin,
you can find all the instructions for Crafts Supplies kits on their website.  Same goes for PSI, btw, and Woodcraft has instructions for some of the Berea kits.

Hello Mark,

I apologize for the mix up.  Your email probably ended up in the spam folder and was overlooked and deleted with the others.  This happens to me at times an yahoo is working on the issue.  Please if youre still interested in some blanks send your request email to;       sales@...  and I'll be sure to get it.  Please include quantity of blanks, grade #1, #2, or #3 and your shipping address and we can work it from there.  Sorry again, and I hope to hear from you real soon.

                                    Best Regards,

                             Jack Dickson   (Manzanita Burlwood)
