I turn my pens to 12000 grit and then use a homemade burnishing cream of butcher block oil, pummice powder and mineral spirits and then apply crystal coat.

For the hobbyist, I suggest Woodcraft or Rockler for one or two pieces at a time until you decide what kind of pen you want to make many of. Rocdkler's
