My son, Chris started hiking the Appalachian Trail at Springer Mountain, GA on May 2nd and hiked north to Waynesboro VA before taking a couple of weeks off.  He then flew to Maine to hike south from Mt. Kathadin , ME to complete what is referred to as a flip flop hike of the whole trail.  He is currently in Unionville , NY with about 500 miles to go.  His best friend is getting married in early December and since Chris is the best man he needs to finish as soon as possible.  He expects to complete this journey sometime in early November.  He picked up some winter gear from another friend from College who now lives in Flushing , NY last week and seems more determined than ever to finish.  I have attached some photos taken along the way and I hope you enjoy.

For a couple of weeks up in Maine & New Hampshire he was hiking with the CEO of Whole Foods, a national organic grocery store chain.  He was dealing with a lot of angry people on Facebook at the time because he was outspoken against some of the President's Health Care proposals.  It seems his stores are popular with a more liberal crowd but he is a Libertarian and does not like the President messing with his freedom.  Chris' first hiking companion only lasted a week and barely made it out of Georgia .  He hiked with Andy from Raleigh NC for about 700 miles until he got to Rusty's but then Andy had to return to work.  Now that cold weather is setting in up North his hiking partners are few and he is spending lots of time alone.  Tonight he called to tell me how beautiful it was sitting on a cliff overlooking the Hudson River with a sunset at his back and a view of New York City and the Empire State Building in the distance.  I can't wait to see those photos.

We all dream of adventure and Chris is experiencing the best the United States has to offer.  To date he has sent us over 700 photos.  A few are attached and I hope you enjoy them.  The wildlife has been interesting but the scenery has been breathtaking.  Seeing the photos has been the next best thing to hiking the trail myself.  The photo at Rust's Hard Time Hollow is of Chris and Rusty.  Rusty lives on the Blue Ridge Parkway near Waynesboro , VA and has been giving shelter, food and water to hikers for a small fee for many years.  He is now looking for someone to take over for him.  Apparently the property is quite valuable but he just loves to live very naturally and interact with those whose adventure brings them to his door.

We all need a little adventure now and then but few of us really step up and do something like what Chris has done this year.  He will never forget this adventure and it will almost certainly provide stories for his children and grandchildren for decades to come.

WHO AM I?

     *     I was born in one country, raised in another. My father was born in another country.  I was not his only child.  He fathered several children with numerous women.

     *     I became very close to my mother, as my father showed no interest in me. My mother died at an early age from cancer.

     *     Later in life, questions arose over my real name.

     *     My birth records were sketchy and no one was able to produce a legitimate, reliable birth certificate.

     *     I grew up practicing one faith but converted to Christianity, as it was widely accepted in my country, but I practiced non-traditional beliefs & didn't follow Christianity, except in the public eye under scrutiny.

     *     I worked and lived among lower-class people as a young adult, disguising myself as someone who really cared about them.

     *     That was before I decided it was time to get serious about my life and I embarked on a new career.

     *     I wrote a book about my struggles growing up.  It was clear to those who read my memoirs that I had difficulties accepting that my father abandoned me as a child.

     *     I became active in local politics in my 30's then with help behind the scenes, I literally burst onto the scene as a candidate for national office in my 40s.  They said I had a golden tongue and could talk anyone into anything.  That reinforced my conceit.

     *     I had a virtually non-existent resume, little work history, and no experience in leading a single organization. Yet I was a powerful speaker and citizens were drawn to me as though I were a magnet and they were small roofing tacks.

     *     I drew incredibly large crowds during my public appearances. This bolstered my ego.

     *     At first, my political campaign focused on my country's foreign policy.   I was very critical of my country in the last war and seized every opportunity to bash my country.

     *     But what launched my rise to national prominence were my views on the country's economy. I pretended to have a really good plan on how we could do better and every poor person would be fed and housed for free.

     *     I knew which group was responsible for getting us into this mess.  It was the free market, banks and corporations.   I decided to start making citizens hate them and if they were envious of others who did well, the plan was clinched tight.

     *     I called mine "A People's Campaign" and that sounded good to all people.

     *     I was the surprise candidate because I emerged from outside the traditional path of politics and was able to gain widespread popular support.

     *     I knew that, if I merely offered the people 'hope', together we could change our country and the world.

     *     So, I started to make my speeches sound like they were on behalf of the downtrodden, poor, ignorant to include "persecuted minorities" like the Jews.   My true views were not widely known & I needed to keep them unknown, until after I became my nation's leader.

     *     I had to carefully guard reality, as anybody could have easily found out what I really believed, if they had simply read my writings and examined those people I associated with.

     *     I'm glad they didn't.  Then I became the most powerful man in the world. And the world learned the truth.

*Who am I? *

After more than eight years, the City of Rossville restored its city-run
athletic department in January.

It is an honor to be the athletic director of a city with such a storied past in
athletics and recreation.

Rossville is my hometown and I'm proud to say that.

Working together, Rossville athletics can return to the glory and pride it once
gave to the area. Many of us would not be successful today had it not been for
the direction that Walt Lauter and his athletics department offered.

However, to return the program to the level to provide the services needed by
the youth in our area we need your help.

Many of the families who want their children to participate in sports in our
area cannot afford the fees.

In fact, I know there are children in our area who want to play football or be a
cheerleader that can't because the parents don't have the funds to pay $65 to
play, plus the cost of a helmet, shoulder pads and shoes that are not provided.

During the baseball/softball season, more than 50 parents/guardians of children
could not afford to pay the fees.

This is sad but true.

I do not want any child left out. In more than 35 years coaching youth sports, I
have never had to tell a child they cannot play.

I know what a difference sports can make in the life of a child.

Rossville Athletics is creating a scholarship plan for those who need it. Any
business, church, civic organization, or individual may become a part of this
scholarship team.

Let me know how you would like to help.

Please make your donations to the Rossville Recreation Department and it will go
directly/and only to the scholarship fund.

Thanks

Dear Friends,

This past weekend, Republicans from all over the great state of Georgia came together in Savannah for an extremely successful Georgia Republican Party State Convention.  Leaders from Georgia and all of over the country spoke to a energetic and enthusiastic crowd of 2,000 hard working Republicans who are committed to working towards a common purpose:  Victory in 2010.

Thank you very much for your support in re-electing me State Chairman.

Thank you to our great home-grown speakers, including Herman Cain and our top elected officials.

I would also like to thank our out-of-state guest speakers, RNC Chairman Michael Steele and the Honorable J.C. Watts, for taking the time to address our State Convention.  We were also honored to host Florida National Committeeman Paul Senft and Arkansas National Committeewoman Rita Hamilton in Savannah .  We thank them for their support to the Georgia Republican Party.

This State Convention was an exciting time and great opportunity to prepare for a winning 2010 election cycle for Republicans.  We put in place the grassroots leadership that will be responsible for leading us to victory in 2010 and ensured that we are united and committed to that goal.

With such a crucial election year coming up, we must renew our commitment to common sense conservative values and keep the momentum going to re-elect US Senator Johnny Isakson, continue to build on our Republican majorities in the Georgia General Assembly and Congressional Delegation, add more Republicans to our Constitutional Offices and make sure the next Governor of Georgia is proudly representing the GOP.

But make no mistake, the Democrats are going to give us a fight.  They do not share our vision for Georgia or America 's future.  They want to raise taxes, enact a government takeover of our healthcare system and other private enterprises, and retreat from the War on Terror.  They are voting against our troops and for growing government bureaucracy, funded by higher taxes on you and me.

This is not the leadership that Georgia and America needs.

That's why we must work harder than ever this year.  I am blessed to be Chairman of the Georgia Republican Party because I have the honor to work with the best grassroots team in the nation.  The grassroots of Georgia are the most devoted team of volunteers who tirelessly work across the state to send great Republican leaders to represent us under the Gold Dome and in Washington . These leaders fight every day for us.  They stand up against the liberal agenda and make sure our Conservative voices are heard.

We took our time in Savannah to celebrate the hard work and accomplishments of our Party, but we also looked to the future.  With your support, I have no doubt that the Georgia Republican Party will continue to see our past successes grow.  Georgia has continued to be a bright spot against a difficult national climate for Republicans and the grassroots of Georgia are definitely proud to lead the charge.

I would like to thank the city of Savannah , the Chatham County GOP, and everyone involved for making this year's Convention such a success.

Thank you for all you have done, everything you have sacrificed and all the future work you will do on behalf of this Party for which we care so deeply.

Thank you for the honor and trust you have given me to serve as your Chairman for a second term and I look forward to working with all of you in what I know will be a winning year in 2010 for the Georgia Republican Party.

Sincerely,

Sue P. Everhart

You're sound asleep when you hear a thump outside your bedroom door.
Half-awake, and nearly paralyzed with fear, you hear muffled whispers.
At least two people have broken into your house and are moving your way.
With your heart pumping, you reach down beside your bed and pick up your
shotgun. You rack a shell into the chamber, then inch toward the door
and open it. In the darkness, you make out two shadows.

One holds something that looks like a crowbar. When the intruder
brandishes it as if to strike, you raise the shotgun and fire. The blast
knocks both thugs to the floor. One writhes and screams while the second
man crawls to the front door and lurches outside. As you pick up the
telephone to call police, you know you're in trouble.

In your country, most guns were outlawed years before, and the few That
are privately owned are so stringently regulated as to make them
useless. Yours was never registered. Police arrive and inform you that
the second burglar has died. They arrest you for First Degree Murder and
Illegal Possession of a Firearm. When you talk to your attorney, he
tells you not to worry: authorities will probably plea the case down to
manslaughter.

"What kind of sentence will I get?" you ask.

"Only ten-to-twelve years," he replies, as if that's nothing. "Behave
yourself, and you'll be out in seven."

The next day, the shooting is the lead story in the local newspaper.
Somehow, you're portrayed as an eccentric vigilante while the two men
you shot are represented as choirboys. Their friends and relatives can't
find an unkind word to say about them. Buried deep down in the article,
authorities acknowledge that both "victims" have been arrested numerous
times. But the next day's headline says it all: "Lovable Rogue Son
Didn't Deserve to Die." The thieves have been transformed from career
criminals into Robin Hood-type pranksters. As the days wear on, the
story takes wings. The national media picks it up, then the
international media. The surviving burglar has become a folk hero.

Your attorney says the thief is preparing to sue you, and he'll probably
win. The media publishes reports that your home has been burglarized
several times in the past and that you've been critical of local police
for their lack of effort in apprehending the suspects. After the last
break-in, you told your neighbor that you would be prepared next time.
The District Attorney uses this to allege that you were lying in wait
for the burglars.

A few months later, you go to trial. The charges haven't been reduced,
as your lawyer had so confidently predicted. When you take the stand,
your anger at the injustice of it all works against you. Prosecutors
paint a picture of you as a mean, vengeful man. It doesn't take long for
the jury to convict you of all charges.

The judge sentences you to life in prison.

This case really happened.

On August 22, 1999 , Tony Martin of Emneth, Norfolk , England , killed
one burglar and wounded a second. In April, 2000, he was convicted and
is now serving a life term.

How did it become a crime to defend one's own life in the once great
British Empire ?

It started with the Pistols Act of 1903... This seemingly reasonable law
forbade selling pistols to minors or felons and established that handgun
sales were to be made only to those who had a license. The Firearms Act
of 1920 expanded licensing to include not only handguns but all firearms
except shotguns.

Later laws passed in 1953 and 1967 outlawed the carrying of any weapon
by private citizens and mandated the registration of all shotguns.

Momentum for total handgun confiscation began in earnest after the
Hungerford mass shooting in 1987... Michael Ryan, a mentally disturbed Man
with a Kalashnikov rifle, walked down the streets shooting everyone he
saw. When the smoke cleared, 17 people were dead.

The British public, already de-sensitized by eighty years of "gun
control", demanded even tougher restrictions. (The seizure of all
privately owned handguns was the objective even though Ryan used a
rifle.)

Nine years later, at Dunblane , Scotland , Thomas Hamilton used a
semi-automatic weapon to murder 16 children and a teacher at a public
school.

For many years, the media had portrayed all gun owners as mentally
unstable, or worse, criminals. Now the press had a real kook with which
to beat up law-abiding gun owners. Day after day, week after week, the
media gave up all pretense of objectivity and demanded a total ban on
all handguns... The Dunblane Inquiry, a few months later, Sealed the fate
of the few sidearm still owned by private citizens.

During the years in which the British government incrementally took Away
most gun rights, the notion that a citizen had the right to armed
self-defense came to be seen as vigilantism. Authorities refused to
grant gun licenses to people who were threatened, claiming that
self-defense was no longer considered a reason to own a gun Citizens who
shot burglars or robbers or rapists were charged while the real
criminals were released.

Indeed, after the Martin shooting, a police spokesman was quoted as
saying, "We cannot have people take the law into their own hands."

All of Martin's neighbors had been robbed numerous times, and several
elderly people were severely injured in beatings by young thugs who had
no fear of the consequences. Martin himself, a collector of antiques,
had seen most of his collection trashed or stolen by burglars.

When the Dunblane Inquiry ended, citizens who owned handguns were given
three months to turn them over to local authorities. Being good British
subjects, most people obeyed the law. The few who didn't were visited by
police and threatened with ten-year prison sentences if they didn't
comply. Police later bragged that they'd taken nearly 200,000 handguns
from private citizens.

How did the authorities know who had handguns? The guns had been
registered and licensed. Kinda like cars.

Sound familiar?

WAKE UP AMERICA , THIS IS WHY OUR FOUNDING FATHERS PUT THE SECOND
AMENDMENT IN OUR CONSTITUTION.

tireless minority keen to set brush fires in people's minds.." --Samuel

Chickamauga Man Shot And Killed In Flintstone
posted December 19, 2008

Walker County Sheriff's Office detectives are investigating a
homicide that occurred around 6 a.m. Friday at Premier Pattern and
Machine located on Pipe Shop Road in Flintstone.

Walker County Sheriff Steve Wilson stated that Mike Mullens, 44, of
Chickamauga was found shot to death inside his pickup truck at 6:30
a.m. Friday.

Mullens was a co-owner of Premier Pattern and Machine in Flintstone.

Mullens had been shot one time which proved to be fatal.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is assisting the Walker County
Sheriff's Office with this homicide investigation. Anyone with any
knowledge of this crime is asked to call Det. Sgt. Walt Hensley at
706-638-1909.

WALKER COUNTY (WRCB)- Friday morning at Premier Patten and Machine
Inc.-- employees hug after learning the horrifying news the co owner,
Mike Mullens, was shot to death in the parking lot still sitting
inside his truck.

Eyewitness News cameras were the only ones rolling as the white Ford
F-150, the key piece of evidence, was sent to the GBI crime lab in
Decatur. Investigators tells us two shots were fired-- one into a
light fixture and the other bullet hitting the 44 year old victim in
the left side of his head. Doug Wolf lives nearby and heard the gun
shots.

"I knew it was close and I knew it was a pistol but I just really
didn't think that much about it" said Doug Wolf.

Sheriff Steve Wilson says no weapons were found-- and there was no
surveillance video-- or eyewitnesses-- making this homicide tough to
solve.

"We're trying to unravel exactly what took place and trying to find
any clues that may lead us to the shooter," said Wilson.

Friday investigators continued to search the area, looking for any
clues as to who may have been the shooter-- but came up with nothing.
Now neighbors like Doug Wolf are left haunted by the terrifying
homicide that happened right next door.

"I never thought for a minute that anybody got shot," said Wolf.

The GBI is also assisting in this investigation. Investigators are
asking for your help-- if you have any information on the murder of
Mike Mullens call the Walker County Sheriff's Office. That number 706-
638-1909.

Walker County investigators are looking for your help to finding a
calculated killer. Investigators say around 6 or 6:15 this morning,
someone fired a shot into the head of 44 year old Mike Mullins.

The shooting happened while he was in his personal truck. Sheriff
Steve Wilson says he had pulled in front of a bay door at the machine
shop he owned, Premier Pattern and Machine Incorporated.

Neighbors heard two shots. Sheriff Wilson says the overhead light
was also shot out. Cori Hudson lives across the street from the shop
and says only a few seconds passed between the two shots.

Hudson described what she heard as she was making cookies, "It
was very loud, it didn't sound like a regular gunshot to me. It was
just like a loud, then it was kind of an echo. There was two."

Sheriff Steve Wilson said, "Just initially it did not appear to be
robbery as motive. Quite frankly right now we do not have a motive.
We're still looking at all different angles."

Sheriff Wilson urges residents of Woodburn Station subdivision to
call if they saw anything unusual early this morning.

Frank Fabris Memorial Service

ROSSVILLE, Ga. -- A memorial service is scheduled for former
Rossville High School head football coach Frank Fabris on Sunday,
Nov. 16 at 2 p.m. at Hutcheson Memorial Field in Rossville. The
Fabris family plans to attend the service and all of those who played
for Coach Fabris and those who know what it is to "Be Rossville" are
invited.

Fabris passed away on Oct. 31 in Watkinsville at the age of 77.

He had stints at Vidalia and Cartersville High Schools , where we
amassed a 30-5 record between 1954-1956. His final Vidalia team lost
to Morgan County in the state finals.

Rossville had a 2-6-2 record during Fabris' first season with the
Bulldogs in 1957, but quickly returned to form.

The Bulldogs were 64-16-3 in seven seasons under Fabris and had a
stretch of five consecutive region championships.

Rossville lost in the state semifinals in 1958 and 1960 while his
1959 and 1961 teams fell in the state finals.

Then in 1962, the Bulldogs finished with a perfect 13-0 record,
pitching seven shutouts while only allowing 40 points for the entire
season.

Rossville rolled past North Clayton to win the school's third and
final state football crown.

Fabris went 9-1 in his final season at Rossville in 1963 and moved on
to the college ranks, enjoying stints at Brigham Young , Vanderbilt
and Mississippi State . "He was like a father to me," said former
player Floyd Shadrick . "He changed my life and put it in a different
direction. Coach Fabris was bigger than life. We were all scared of
him."

"He commanded respect," said Jessie Goodman , a member of the 1962
state championship team. "You may not have liked him much when you
played for him, but you learned to love him after you left. He was a
very good football coach and a great motivator, but more than
anything, he instilled things in us that helped us in life.

His former players honored Fabris three years ago by having a
scholarship fund established in his name at Ridgeland High School .

"He's the most extraordinary man I've ever met," former Rossville
quarterback Paul Painter said the night of the ceremony at
Ridgeland. "Like everyone else here tonight, I just love him as much
as I can. He's a special man and he has a special family."

Fabris later said that the feeling was mutual between himself and his
former players.

"There was a great deal of respect up and down the line and that pays
off when you put the cleats on to take the field," Fabris said. "I
don't want to get too mushy, but I have a tremendous regard for all
of them. I love those boys and I believe they loved me and the other
coaches too."

His wife Betty and his two sons, Robert and Jon , survive Fabris. In
case of rain, the service will be held in the old Rossville High
School gym.

Teacher's influence a lifelong gift

Concerning your article about Dale Shaffner (Aug. 17). I'm glad he
is receiving some of the credit he deserves. I've not had the
opportunity to let those who've made a difference in my life know
what they've meant. One of those individuals is Mr. Shaffner.
When I was a sophomore at Rossville in 1983/1984, ironically Mr.
Shaffner's last year, my father passed away leaving my sister,
brother and me orphans. On my father's death bed, he made me promise
I would graduate high school. Even though I was the weakest link
in "The Marching Bulldogs," my desire to not disappoint Mr. Shaffner
kept me in the band and in school.
The desire to make Mr. Shaffner proud made keeping my promise to
my father easier. The pride and discipline instilled in me by a great
mentor like Mr. Shaffner carried me through some tough times, and for
this I will forever be indebted. My love and respect for Mr. Shaffner
will be with me the rest of my days.
I'm a midlife career changer who is in his first year as a
teacher, and I can only hope to impact my students' lives with a
fraction of how Mr. Shaffner affected his students.

Hello fellow Rossville classmates,

I wanted to send an email to each of you in hopes that you could get
the word out to anyone you know in the Class of '85 regarding my
cousin passing away this weekend. I know some of you may know Susan
Duckett, or possibly know someone that graduated with her that could
be notified. She was in the band and was very smart. She lost her
battle to cancer at the early age of 41, and I wanted to ask for your
prayers for our family at this time. (Her older brother Dale Duckett
was in the Class of '82 or '83.)

Susan will be at Heritage Funeral Home on Battlefield Parkway with
visitation on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm, and then Thursday
from noon until 2 pm with the funeral service at 2:00 pm.

I appreciate any help you can provide with communicating this to
others that may have known her.
