We usually train hitting the stick with rattan, because it's hard to run a
commercial school in the USA if you "beat on people". But, there are some
good padded sticks we sometimes use in sparring, and I like to also use
these with our standard drills & counters, but hit a padded hand instead of
the stick. Everyone can do this & get the "correct" feel. Those with more
gusto can use gloves with rattan, or the padded sticks with no gloves if
they wish.
These padded sticks have a pliable solid core. You could also use padded
rattan. But I don't like those cheap padded PVC ones at all.

Hello Gino,
There are a number of ways to compensate on what one might assume is
lacking. In your sinawali or solo
baston exercises with a partner you could use what some call distance sparring.
Distance sparring like the sinawali is also timing and distance. That way
you can focus on your target without injuring your partner.
Another drill is give and take. I got this drill from a modern arnis
instructor and a doce pares instructor. One person starts with a strike, and
the partner counters with a check and/or footwork and follows with a counter
strike. From the counter strike, the process reverses. The partners
counterstrike should be countered by the person who initiated the first
response. You start out slow, and speed up. You don't have to speed up right
away, it is a gradual application.
You can also use protective gear. Just protect the area yu want to focus
your strikes. One person is wearing the gear and the other is not. The person
wearing the gear initiates attack and the other person not wearing gear counters
and focuses on the protectve area. To practice multiple strikes, then more gear
to wear.
Another focus exercise is what I call due to lack of a better name is leaf
hitting. Tie a string on a leaf or small piece of paper and practice your basic
strikes on the leaf. After awhile you'll find yourself more accurate in your
strikes. Again you start slow and build up speed. I hope this helps more than
confuse.

Greetings.
I would like to ask the membership their thoughts about training approaches.
In modern arnis, students are taught to hit stick to stick, for obvious
reasons. However, some old masters derisively call this bangga-bangga
because, they say, and rightly, that this is not the old way as you are
supposed to train to hit the hand or some other worthwhile target.
So how do you reconcile the two?
My instructors say that at the advanced stages of training, when one's
stick control is high, striking the hand/arm/head instead of the stick
should be just as easy? Seeing how they do it, I see no reason to doubt them.
Yet, because I find myself instinctively countering a strike with a
counterstrike to a stick, I would like to get some suggestions on how one
can unlearn this tendency even at this early stage. Or is it just me?

Why do you think that is the case? Someone said (I don't recall who or where)
that it seems the Filipino Martial Arts are more popular outside their areas of
origin. (!) Is it because it is more "exotic" to practice another of those
arts? Is it the attractiveness of belt ranks (although it's my understanding
that some FMA styles have incorporated this)?
Living in the US near a sizable Filipino populaton, I've often wondered the same
thing about the lack of Eskrima schools in the area. Many Filpino-American kids
and teens don't even know these warrior arts exist. Many adults I know say
they've seen it some time, but never made it a point to promote it or even
suggest it to me as a possible hobby (this from family members I've known all my
life).

Having these numerous styles is one of the things that makes FMA so interesting.
Standardizing ONE "national" version of Eskrima would be a daunting task. How
do we NOT lose special aspects of a given art for the sake of conformity? How
many styles would actually be represented? There are bound to be many that will
fall through the cracks in the effort to unify schools. Standardizing would
further compound the danger of diluting the arts--would you let another school
tell you what to put in your curriculum? It would be difficult for me to do so.

Find an unsuspecting person, preferrably someone you don't like, then take
a good swing at the back of his head.
Just kidding. :)
Seriously...
Take the blade and lightly run it down the hair at the back of your head.
If it's a good live blade, you should feel the blade slightly tugging at your
hair. Dapat kumakagat sa buhok. If the blade effortlessly slides down the back
of your head, then it has a bad edge.
Personally, I've never been able to get this test to work. All the blades I
tried slide down smoothly (either that or I've got a really crappy blade
collection).

Speaking of cheap swords and bolos, this happened to a cousin of mine
not too long ago:
One of those street vendors (the ones with a lot of cheap "samurai"
swords and bolos) offered him one...I can't remember how much, but
anyways, my cousin really wasn't interested. So he asked the guy to
sell it for a ridiculous price...which the guy did.
My cousin ended up buying it. :)
(Later he kept telling me that at the original price, the guy must be
making a small fortune.)

Great to have you on board! I hope you won't find this list too boring. :)
So far we have 28 members on the list, and based on the domain names of the
e-mail addresses, I assume a lot of people are curious too.
Here in the Philippines, it's sad to say that Taekwondo and Karate are the
more popular martial arts. It's not surprising to find that an instructor in
Arnis (the more widely used term here) started out in Karate or Taekwondo.
It's also sad to say that the art is in danger of being "diluted". There
are many stories of instructors who are quick to to develop their own "styles"
in order to claim the title of "Master". Others claim to teach the style of
their teachers, but because they haven't completed their training, they
attempt to fill in the holes in their knowledge with techniques from other
martial arts.
Mind you, I'm not against people combining different martial arts in order
to form a fluid fighting system, but there is a need to preserve the art, or
else the art will die. Who knows how much of the art was lost when the great
masters died.
The existence of numerous styles means that there is no national
coordinating body to promote the art. Many masters have fueds with other
masters, so it seems unlikely that there will ever be an open forum where
people can exchange ideas.
That's why the list is here; to be an open forum for the next generation of
eskrimadors who are tasked to carry the legacy of the Filipino people.

Greetings all:
I saw the announcement on the Eskrima Digest and even though I am from the US
signed up with the goal of getting a better sense of what the art is about in
its homeland-- so mostly I will be lurking.

Hahn Manila used to make good japanese style blades, but I haven't seen any
lately.
I asked a nephew of mine in Batangas to look around. I'll write back as
soon as I receive word.
I think we should bring up this topic again when we have more list members.

Just curious, how much did you pay to have one made?

I still have to work on some of the pages (FAQ, Directory). I'll probably
make the announcement at E-D later today. Hopefully we'll get more members and
more traffic.

I tried a little Lightning Scientific Arnis for a month but I couldn't sync my
sked with theirs then a friend of mine taught me a little PTK but he left for
the States. Right now, I'm just trying to practice the little I've learned and
am on the lookout for instructors.

Although to be fair, the sword that I had them made is a bit unusual - a
ginunting (I traced the shape from someone I met who studies Pekiti-Tirsia, it's
apparently their favorite sword).

Hello,
My apologies to the people on this list if most of my posts turn out to be
questions - I'm just a beginner.
Does anyone know of a blacksmith/panday who can make good swords? I've tried
several and they either have problems with their blade craft or handle craft.
Although to be fair, the sword that I had them made is a bit unusual - a
ginunting (I traced the shape from someone I met who studies Pekiti-Tirsia, it's
apparently their favorite sword).
Thank you, tenrec about the Kalasag tip - I'll check it out.
Thanks,
Jomyo

Hi,
Does everyone know of any arnis schools in Quezon City? There's the
LESKAS group (Lightning Scientific Arnis) at UP and the Arnis Cruzada
people over at
Ateneo but their schedules are a bit incovenient for me.
Thanks,
Jomyo
There's a school at E Roddriguez (in front of Christ the King Church)
called Kalasag...I haven't been there but I think they might teach
Arnis...

Hello Everyone,
It looks like all 4 of us are here, although there's one e-mail I don't
recognize (hey Ian, is that you?).
First of all, I'd like to ask you about the policy settings for the list.
The relevant ones are:
1. Directory of list members - Currently, this option is turned off so
nobody can get a list of members except for the list manager (yours truly). I
turned it off for the privacy of list members. If I activate this, members can
see who's on the list. Should I leave it as is?
2. Public Access to Postings - Currently, only members of the list can view
postings via eGroups web based interface. It is possible to remove the
restriction so that anybody, even those not on the list, can view the list
postings. Again, should I leave this as is?
Second, there are things to do before I annonce the list on eskrima-digest:
1. Set up a Home Page - I'll probably have a preliminary one up by Sunday.
Features include Introduction, FAQ, Teacher's Directory. Any ideas what else
to put up?
2. Test the List - So far it looks like it's working. By replying to this
message, we can run this list through it's paces, change policies if
necessary, etc.
I hope to here from you soon.
