I can't comment on the change in costs from $2000 to $3000 that Chuck experienced, however, I do know that you can exchange Cedis back to US $ at any Forex. There are several in Osu. You, of course as in any monetary exchange, will loose some money in the transaction but it can be done. It rarely can be done at a bank, however, unless you have an account but any Forex will do it if they have US $. I never had trouble exchanging it when I was returning to the US. Jusst ask you host to take you to a Forex Buereau/Exchange.
Also you shold feel free to try to push the host for an accurate cost accounting before going letting them know that you will expect that amount to hold true. If it is changed while you are there you should strongly but patiently and politely push for an accounting of all monies involved being sure to ask why the cost has changed. Receipts and written bills should always be given in any such monetary exchange.
One of the major difficulties in short term trips is the "politeness" we feel we need to provide at the expense of the host groups' honesty and accountability. We do have a tendency to help in the development of a "lack of transparency" in these exchanges when we don't push for a full accounting.

On the issue of transportation the Presbyterian Church of Ghana (I think this is what Chuck is referring to when he says the Ghana Presbytery) has a couple of buses they will allow to be used. They provide a driver and the group is expected to pay for fuel and driver expenses as well as to make a small gift (hopefully) to the PCG for the use of the bus. The busses were purchased with mission money gifts from the partner church in Germany. You will need to contact Sam Ayete-Nyampong. Sorry I don't have his email on this computer but if you contact Lacey Gilliam lacey.gilliam@... she can certainly get it for you. One caveat, these busses are often booked months in advance and priority is always given a partner that has taken the time to work through the Head Office. Another reason for making sure we make contact with our partners when we do this work.
Feel free to drop my name and please pass my greetings to those in the Head Office as you have the opportunity.
Let me know if I can be of any other help.

Bill,
When we went over last year we were housed by the Ghana Presbytery at the a Girl's School where we were working. The traveling expenses for the whole 2 weeks while we were there (through the presbytery) which included room and board were supposed to be around $2000.00. However, when we arrived this was not the case. We needed an extra $1000.00!
I would suggest that you take some extra money with you to cover (extra) expenses.
It may be helpful to visit the Ghana presbytery and ask the presbytery if they have any transporation they are willing to give you free or at a discounted rate.
We took cash and exchanged it for CDs. Don't exchange all of your money if you only take cash, because you can't change it back...
Don't know if any of this has been helpful, but I hope it has and wish you well on your trip. I know it will be a blessing.
