I am a supervisor for a community center in Northeast Phila. I have
been looking for information on a community garden for a small group
of people from my community center, thus I stumbled onto your group.
I have already checked the database, and saw nothing in the
northeast.... Anyone have any advice for finding or knowledge of a
community garden here in the greater northeast area.

Thank you...

Mary J.

Sorry to all who were frustrated by not finding an active meeting on
3rd Thursdays - Thanks to Adam for taking the reminder off for now.

The Garden Database is excellent - this is just the resource that
folks were looking for. I added our garden on Sloan Street.

If anyone is looking for a community garden in University City to
join - email me! We may still have space.

Sloan Street Gardeners enjoyed the shared workdays here and at Lots
of Love and Summer/Winter gardens this last summer and want to do
them again! Here is our planned date for a Work-day. Please share
this with folks in your garden and let us know yours if you want to
do this again also.

You are invited to:

Garden Work-Day and Potluck
Saturday, April 17, 2004, 10AM

at Sloan Street Community Garden
326 N Sloan Street

Sloan is located between 39th and 40th Streets and the garden is
between Baring and Powelton

We will be doing the following projects on this day:
1) Cleaning out the tool shed for spring
2) Disassembling and reassembling the toolshed on the flat surface
(it's too uneven where it is now and it needs this)
3) Cleaning out and re-locating the storage shelves
4) Raking and clearing sticks and debris from the composting area
5) Weeding and shoveling the compost/topsoil heap
6) Move boards for discard to front for City Trash pickup (they will
make a special trip on this day)
7) General sweeping and picking up where needed

Bring your own work gloves if you have them and your appetite!

As you may be aware we host a database of community gardens in the
philadelphia area. If you know of any in the area that are not in the
database. Would you please take a few moments and submit them.

Many Thanks,
Adam Fels

hi,

my husband and I are "almost" vegetarians, and would like to utilize our
vegetable
refuse more progressively. Since we live in a small row house in Fishtown and
are
ignorant about how to start our compost, is it possible for us to just bring it
to a
community garden and have the able take care of the rest??

if so, can the Seedy Acres in Northern Liberties accommodate this request? It is
most
close to our house.

many thanks,
hsiaoning

We open the compost bins in our community garden to anyone on the street
who wishes to use it. I don't know about seedy acres though.

Bye!

I will try to find someone at Seedy Acres who can reply to you!
Sounds like a great idea if they can use the compost.

Hi Tracy - sorry I don't know why that question went to you - I know where your
garden is! I was emailing new folks whose names were up on the site. (p.s.
looked at the Peeps webpage :) very fun). Happy Gardening! Carolyn Smith

Check with the people at:

Volunteer Center of United Way
501 Washington Street, PO Box 302
Reading, PA 19603
Phone: 610-371-4571

I know they have been doing some community garden work in Southeast
Philadelphia. So perhaps they might be doing some in your area as
well.

you could also check with:

PA Heartland Herb Society
2001 Lorraine Road
Reading, PA 19604
Phone: 610-375-8061

and:

Reading Beautification, Inc.
815 Washington Street
Reading, PA 19601
Phone: 610-655-6277

and:
Berks county Master Gardeners
http://berks.extension.psu.edu/mg/

I couldn't find any contact information for Berks County
Horticultural Society but I did find that they did some work for:

MID ATLANTIC AIR MUSEUM
11 MUSEUM DRIVE
READING, PA 19605
610-372-7333

look under the part about landscaping project completed on this page
if your intrested in what they did:

http://www.maam.org/newsletters/aug03/aug03news.html

so perhaps you could talk to someone from the museum and get the
number from them if you can't find it else where.

Thats the best I could do at the moment hope it helps.

Hello all,
I'm new to the group and happy to help in any way I can. I've called
around to join the garden nearest me ( 47xx Chester Ave ) but no luck
so far. I do have a small space that could be a shade garden one day.
However, I helped friends of mine with their plot in a community
garden in the Fairmount area for a couple of years. It'd be nice to
have a sunny plot of my own this year.
I look forward to seeing what this group is about and sharing my
experiences.
Cheers!

Hello All,

I'm interested in learning more about the history & lore of trees in Philadelphia and southeastern Pennsylvania. I've already heard about the Osage orange trees from the Lewis & Clark expedition planted at St Peter's Church. What else can you tell me about? I'm interested in recent stories too. Next year, I'll be at the Philadelphia Flower Show. If you don't know an interesting tree story….who else should I talk to about this subject?

Thanks, Robert Smith

Hi, my name is Andrew Ling, and I am a senior at Drexel University
majoring in Digital Media. My group and I are currently working on a
project and we are researching community gardens in the Philadelphia
area. We are looking to get in contact with some representatives who
wouldn't mind to share some information about revitalization projects
in Philadelphia, and anyone who has or is working in any community
gardens who would be willing to share some of their time and
experiences with us. I look forward to any replies, and I thank you
for your time.

Hi Andrew - sorry for the delay in responding to your email.
Have you found the correspondants that you were looking for?
Have you hooked up with Philadelphia Green?
If you are still looking, I can either talk to you or connect you with some
other possiblities. Let me know...

No I haven't yet connected with Philadelphia Green. I have gotten in
contact with the NGA. Is there someone in particular whom I should
contact at Philadelphia Green?

Hello Philly urban gardeners!

This June the Biotechnology Industry Organization will be holding its
annual conference in Philadelphia to promote its development of
genetically-engineered frankenfoods, bioweapons, dangerous designer
pharmaceuticals and other such commodities. As part of the responding
protest mobilization, a collective of Philly-based d.i.y. social and
ecological justice activists are calling for a gathering to focus on
ecological movements in an urban setting, demonstrating practical
alternatives to the systems and technologies we oppose, and also
working to bridge the gap between ecological movements and poor
people's movements in an urban context.

Not surprisingly we expect urban organic gardening to be a key theme.
And since we don't want to have people just talk about things, but
make a real impact on the city and take home real skills they can use,
we thought it would be great if part of our gathering involved a work
day at an existing garden, or even planting a new one somewhere.
Unfortunately no one involved in the collective so far is very
involved in gardening in Philly... so that's where you come in! What
do you think about this? Get in touch with us at
underthepavement@.... We should also have a website soon at
gbug.org. The website for the anti-biotech mobilization is at biodev.org.

Solidarity,
Maus

I can share some of ours if you email me back directly.
Also, Philadelphia Green undoubtedly has some in their archives.

Hi everyone, my name is Andrew Ling, and I am a senior at Drexel
University. I think I've also said that about two or three other times
besfore, but I'll just tick with what works. I was wondering what
everyone feels is the best part about community gardening and the
reasons why everyone here takes part in this activity. Thanks for your
responses.

Hi, folks,

This is Paco from Philadelphia Green/PHS.

I've signed back on to this group, looking for communication among
Philly's community gardeners.

I'm pleased to see there's 38 members here, and it looks like I don't
know most of you.

I'm curious to know how many of you intend to plant garlic and / or
winter cover crops this October.

Happy gardening!

Can anyone point me to a garden in the west philadelphia area? I tried to join
the one on
Warrington but they've got a 2 year wait list. Are there any gardens out there
where I might
be able to get my hands in the ground this sping?
Thanks for you help
Zenobia
