Dear Readers,

From 22 to 25 October, an exhibition entirely devoted to women will be held for
the first time in Paris...Nowadays, women are expected to live several lives at
once, juggling children, family, work and career, leisure activities and
culture, to name but a few, so the 'Femmes' exhibition has been designed to meet
every need for expression and give women every opportunity to experience their
femininity in a harmonious way as possible.

With the aim of fulfilling a maximum of expectations, "Femmes" presents five
different worlds: Culture, work and play; Leisure and lifestyle; Deco and
design; Beauty and well-being and Fashion and trends. Gentlemen are welcome!

PARIS EXPO Porte de Versailles
1, place de la Porte de Versailles 75015 PARIS

Other upcoming events and exhibitions:

1) CULTURAL HERITAGE FAIR (Theme: Heritage & Music)
From 3 to 6 November. For all those who appreciate cultural heritage and are
interested in its restoration, the Salon du Patrimoine Culturel awaits you this
autumn at the Carrousel du Louvre to reveal all about the different facets of
this fascinating activity...

The fair welcomes more than 250 exhibitors: restorers, craftsmen, companies,
institutions, local authorities, associations and museums who present their
techniques and know-how. For its 11th year, the fair will be honouring the
crafts and sites connected to the theme Heritage and Music: heritage sites
dedicated to music, with opera and concert venues, instrument restorers, antique
dealers and foundations taking centre stage at this year's fair.
At the same time, lectures, workshops and other exhibits will be featured.

CARROUSEL DU LOUVRE
99, rue de Rivoli 75001 PARIS
Metro: Palais Royal Musee du Louvre
Entry: 11 euros

2) PARIS PEN SHOW
On 5 and 6 November. When the magazine "Le Stylographe" had the idea last year
to set up a fair entirely devoted to pens, the idea was received with enthusiasm
by all those involved. Adopting the name Paris Pen Show, the fair was a frank
success...

For its second edition, men and women who appreciate beautiful pens, collectors
and experts from all over Europe will join representatives of the main
international brands for two days, during which they can exchange knowledge,
have pens valued, sell or exchange their collector's items and admire the latest
designs by famous names such as Cartier, Chopard, Parker, Pelikan or Waterman.
The event is peppered with a variety of activities (Stylographe trophy, silent
auction, etc.).
A unique opportunity to admire one of the finest collections of writing
instruments presented in the appropriately-named Hotel Scribe.
MUSES (LES) HOTEL SCRIBE
1, rue Scribe 75009 PARIS
Metro: Opera

3) KARA, JEWELERY DESIGN
From 19 to 22 November. Fans of sumptuous jewels and gorgeous gems, this autumn
check out the cream of international contemporary jewellery beneath the rotunda
of the Bourse du Commerce. 80 independent jewellers will present a prestigious
display of their latest creations and unique designs...

Let these exceptional pieces from all horizons take your breath away and admire
the savoir faire of this new generation of designers.

BOURSE DU COMMERCE DE PARIS
2, rue de Viarmes 75001 PARIS
Metro: Louvre Rivoli

4) SALON DES VINS
From 24 to 28 November. A whistle-stop wine tour of France, does that appeal? No
need to pull on your boots to tramp through the vineyards in this harvesting
season, though...

The "Salon des vins des vignerons indépendants" as it's known here gives you the
opportunity to meet the winemakers right here in Paris, each one with their own
vision of the profession and their own story to tell, so putting "a face to each
wine". Photo exhibitions on the theme of "Art et la Vigne", tastings and a range
of other activities are on offer around the wine stands, everything you need to
tickle your taste buds. Remember though, alcohol can be dangerous for the
health, so only in moderation!

PARIS EXPO Porte de Versailles
1, place de la Porte de Versailles 75015 PARIS
Metro: Porte de Versailles
Entry: 6 euros, Hall 5
24,25,26,27 novembre: 10h-20h
28 novembre: 10h-18h

5) TEA EXPO
From 25 to 27 November. This event could very well be just your cup of tea! The
idea behind Tea Expo is to communicate as much information as possible on this
vast subject, so you can learn the difference between tea and tea extracts,
discover a range of tea rituals and ceremonies and sample the many varieties.

Tea Expo aims to introduce the public to the pleasures of tea, based on three
themes: Art, Culture and Health. At the Paris Expo Porte de Versailles for 3
days, all the professionals involved in the world of tea (traders, producers and
other experts), health and wellbeing (dieticians, nutritionists and doctors)
will answer your questions on the subject of tea, its history, varieties and
effects.
Tea Expo is the ideal pre-Christmas tea break - another cup?

Dear Readers,

The 71st WINE HARVEST FESTIVAL IN MONTMARTRE,

in a festive setting. The first parade will start from the Montmartre
vineyards around 11am, following the official Harvest ceremony.
The traditional procession will set off at 3pm from the town hall
in the 18th arrondissement and make its way to the gardens
of the Sacré Coeur. This event promotes a spirit of solidarity,

The exhibition centres on 3 periods: from 1839 to 1914,

It also focuses on 3 threads of the same theme: "history",

of photography; "stories", which explores familiar or
lesser-known regions and reveals new perspectives;
"from documentary to fiction", which introduces a contemporary
and interpretative vision, through poetry and fiction.
This year, some major museums open their doors to
photography: the Louvre, Pompidou Centre, Jeu de Paume,
Musée Zadkine, Maison Victor Hugo... and "Paris Photography Month"
joins with 2 other cities, Berlin and Vienna, to become the
"European Photography Month". From 29/10/2004 to 29/11/2004.

Young photographers have been given carte blanche to

and lead us to question our European identity.

A selection of 50 photographs will be presented on hoardings
between Concorde and Rond-Point Clémenceau. Other images
can also be found on municipal hoardings throughout Paris.

Dear Reader,

The American Club of Paris celebrates Centennial with Symposium
Featuring Distinguished French and American Experts from
Academia, the Arts, and Business

Event will take place on May 14 under the patronage of the Hon. Howard
Leach, US Ambassador to France, and the Hon. Jean-David Levitte, Ambassador
of France to the United States

PARIS-May 1, 2004- The American Club of Paris, the oldest non-diplomatic
American institution in France, will hold an important day-long symposium
and a black-tie gala on Friday, May 14. The theme of this celebration is
"France and the United States: Past, Present and Future."

The Symposium will feature distinguished speakers on the political,
historical, cultural, and economic aspects of this subject, and will take
place at the Maison du Barreau on the Ile de la Cité. Dr. Bernard Kouchner,
former UN administrator for Kosovo and former Minister of Health, will be
the keynote speaker at the gala dinner.

Symposium Overview

The Honorable François Bujon de l'Estang, the former French Ambassador to
the United States and current Chairman of Citigroup France, will moderate
the morning session on Historical Perspectives of French-American Relations.
This session will include Harvard University's Professor of French History
Patrice Higonnet; University of Caen and EHESS Professor Annie Cohen-Solal;
Princeton University's Professor Ezra Suleiman on the American View of
France; and Mr. Philippe Roger, Director of Studies at EHESS, whose book on
the roots of French anti-Americanism has recently been published in English.

The afternoon session, moderated by The Honorable Avis Bohlen, former U.S.
Ambassador and Assistant Secretary of State, will evaluate the Current and
Future Status of French-American Relations. Mr. Olivier Giscard d'Estaing of
INSEAD will discuss the role of the G8 in Franco-American relations; Mr.
Laurent Cohen-Tanugi, senior vice president and general counsel for
Sanofi-Synthélabo will speak on the effect of European integration on
French-American relations; and Mr. Charles Lambroschini, the Deputy Editor
of Le Figaro, will address the role of the media in helping to shape the
future of Franco-American relations.

The American Club of Paris: History and Background

The American Club of Paris has a dual purpose: to provide Americans living
in and around Paris with opportunities to meet, while at the same time, to
preserve the special ties the United States has with France. The Club traces
its roots back to Benjamin Franklin's meetings at the time of the American
Revolution.

A majority of the Club's 500 members are American citizens, many long time
residents and other professionals on short term assignments. The remainder
is European - mostly French - who seek to preserve business and social
contacts made in the American world.

This mixture of nationalities and personalities has created an ideal forum
for Franco-American dialogue as evidenced by prominent speakers at the
regular lunches: President Jacques Chirac, Ambassador Pamela Harriman,
Pierre Cardin, Ernest-Antoine Seilliere, Prince Albert de Monaco, Casper
Weinberger, Phil Condit, Maurice Levy, I.M. Pei, Peter Ustinov and Patrick
Dupont, among others.

Having a baby in Paris...parts 1-3
by Priscilla Lalisse
The Best of Both Worlds
How wonderful to have a baby who would be from
two different cultures and speak two different languages!
While I was still at the clinic, my husband took care of
registering the baby at the mairie as an official French
citizen, as this must be done three days after the baby
is born, and no later. When my lovely stay at the clinic
came to an end, it was my turn to handle the other
administrative task-making the baby an official American.
Even though we had until the child is 18 years old to
claim his nationality, I wanted to get it done as soon as possible.

Polite Parisians?
Parisians, one of the world's rudest breeds, are growing
politer by the day, turning off mobiles in restaurants, asking other diners
before lighting up at the table and picking up their dog droppings. Or so claims
the weekly French magazine, Le Nouvel Observateur. © AFP

Dear Readers,

CONFUCIUS 551-479 One of the most important figures of Chinese culture,
Confucius nonetheless remains an enigma for the Western public.
This was a time when the central government of the Zhou was in
decline and smaller emerging states were competing against each
other both in luxury and in war, so developing a courtly and chivalrous
artistic style combining jewels and weapons.

Then comes the man and his philosophy with collections kept at
Qufu in Shandong, his birthplace, and in particular in the temple
Kongzimiao which houses an amazing collection of bas-reliefs and
stone steles. The rare books of Lun Yu, drawn up by his disciples,
and his Conversations compiled in the 3rd century B.C., indicate
the role of his work in the battle of ideas between schools who
confronted each other in the bid for a maturity of language.

The religious aspect of Confucianism is the subject of the last
section: as in fact, from 478, the year after the master's death,
to the present day, Confucianism has wielded a real influence,
reflected in the extensive collection of illustrations as well as
in all the basic representations of the religion
(statues, liturgical vases, musical instruments, etc.).

Dear Readers,

A fleeting forest made up of more than 100 unique creations,
dreamed up by international fashion designers. The efforts of
"Les Sapins de Noël des créateurs" go in aid of the
Fondation Les Orphelins Apprentis d'Auteuil, with the sale
of postcards depicting sketches of the trees and a special
tree auction to raise money for a specific project, essential
to the foundation's work. This year's aim is to provide
them with a gymnasium.

WHAT'S NEW AT PWJ?
========================

What's new in Paris this month
Once a month we will be sending you news of
what has just opened, just closed, what's hot and what's not.
You will discover new restaurants, new boutiques, new chefs,
and new trends. If it's happening in Paris you will know about it. Enjoy!
Brought to you by AT YOUR SERVICE Paris

  Ah! The chic 7th arrondissement.
It's true that the 7th is considered one of Paris'
most elegant residential areas. Luxurious townhouses,
government ministries and embassies abound.
And it is also one of the richest neighborhoods in terms
of art and antiques. It is home to the Carré Rive Gauche,
a clearly delineated section of Saint Germain des Prés
born in the 1970's out of the neighbor's love of Paris and antiques.
WE WILL TAKE YOU AROUND ITS FAMOUS SHOPS AND RESTAURANTS.

MOVIE REVIEW: American Splendor
It won the big prize at the 2003 Sundance Film Festival,
another award at Cannes, and raves from the critics.
It mixes animation with live action and its actors with the
real people they play, but is never self-conscious in its cinematic
inventions. It brings us Harvey Pekar, a self-described
"scholarly guy" who never finished college and works as
a file clerk in the Veteran's Administration in Cleveland, Ohio.

"HAVE A SANE SUMMER"
Summer is such a wonderful time of year. It brings back fond
memories of hot, lazy days spent at the pool or on the beach.
It felt so good to be young, out of school and responsibility free.
The sun never seemed to set and the warm smell of the barbecue
permanently filled the air. What a time it was!
by Jacqueline McLaughlin Hale

GUIDELINES FOR WEARING WHITES
There's something cool and refreshing about white clothing
that makes it chic on even the hottest days. Since it reflects
light and absorbs perspiration, making it less noticeable
than on other colors, the wearer looks cool and collected,
even when the temperature soars. Small wonder then that
white has been a long-time favorite of residents of hot,
tropical climates.
by Diana Pemberton-Sikes

LINDA EDER: BROADWAY, MY WAY
When a female singer is blessed with a big voice, she is automatically
cursed with comparisons to Judy Garland and Barbra Streisand.
Whether the performer is flattered or annoyed to be measured against
these icons often depends on how close she comes to equaling them.
Linda Eder has confronted such comparisons head-on by daring to record
songs that are closely linked to those legendary divas of song.
by Brian W. Fairbanks

WHERE TO DINE LATE, LATE IN PARIS
The French capital is full of restaurants, but they mostly close with
the last curtain call. Carol Brick-Stock selects a few of her favourite
nests for hungry night owls.

PICNIC PARADISE IN PARIS
Summer is peering through, it's warm enough to wear shorts and
the flowers are blooming lovely. Anyone for a picnic? Carol Brick-Stock

MOVIE REVIEW: THE BOAT TRIP
The latest mediocrity to which Gooding Jr is attached
is Boat Trip, a waterlogged comedy that might have
sailed smoothly if they had patched up the holes in
the script with some genuine laughs. The plot is right out of a
TV sitcom. Jerry (Gooding Jr) and best buddy Nick (Horatio Sanz),
depressed about the sorry course their love lives have taken,
sign up for a singles cruise, hoping to meet the loves
of their lives, or at least partake of some
meaningless sex. When booking the cruise, they offend
the gay travel agent (Will Farrell) who - get ready
for some big laughs - sends them off on an all male
GAY cruise! Just imagine the hilarity that could
result from that scenario. Unfortunately, you'll have
to imagine it because there is nary a chuckle to be
had from the stale script, so hoary it might have been
salvaged from the garbage pail in which producers
tossed story ideas deemed too juvenile for The Love Boat.

PARIS STREET MARKETS
Among the special delights of Paris are its richly coloured
street markets. The atmosphere is timeless, and the beauty
of the stall displays will make your knees tremble. In Paris alone,
there are upwards of 70 markets, and more than 60 percent of
Parisians shop there. There are basically two market types: the rues
commerçantes, permanent indoor/outdoor street markets open
six days a week, and the marchés volants, roving markets
open in particular neighbourhoods on pre-ordained mornings.

VINOTHERAPY: WINE'S LAS SECRET?
The world's only wine spa is found in the Bordeaux region.
That's right, a wine spa. This being France, it has nothing in

usually associated with the idea of a "cure". It's not cheap,
but it's definitely "something else". Carol Brick-Stock at
expatica.com went to try it out.

From the Editor
             © 2003 Paris Woman Journal

               Dear Readers,

As the Editor and Publisher of Paris Woman Journal, I get a lot of
questions about living in Paris. Recently the subject has turned to France's
role in the debate over the threatened war between the United States and Iraq.
Most expressively, the questions come at the curiosity of my being an American
in Paris during this time. How are we expatriates holding up over here? Are the
French mistreating us, now that they officially hate us? What about all the
French Muslims, do they give us dirty looks and hurl anti-American slogans at
us? In other words, are we OKAY?

Mind you, I wouldn't have given much personal thought to the
subject had I not just returned from my first visit to Tunisia, a Muslim
country. I traveled there with my young son, Kenny, and the experience has had
such a profound affect on me that I now feel obligated to share my own unique
perspective on Americans, Muslims and the French.

It was hard, at first, to begin writing about my thoughts of the
Tunisian people. As stated, this was my first visit to a Muslim nation and I did
not know what to expect. One thing I can say is that I most certainly did not
anticipate the treatment we received. It's not what you think, as the warmth and
smiles of the people remain with me still. To say I was deeply touched by the
people is an understatement, as during our trip we were welcomed and appreciated
without hesitating. It didn't matter where we are from, who we knew or our
profession, the people just smiled and stared.

At first we were put off by this reaction, as staring can be such
an antagonizing act. But staring can also be the act of true admiration, which
we eventually understood was the case as, with each encounter, when people
learned we were Americans, instead of registering anger and suspicion, they
enthusiastically asked, "Which state...Texas?" When we said that we were in fact
from California, they gave us even bigger, lovelier smiles and said, "California
is great!"

After about the one hundredth time of this (and on the first day,
mind you), I felt overwhelmed by the two basic ingredients that define human
relationships - communication and acceptance. Nowhere was this more evident to
me than while watching my son, Kenny, play with children from all over the
world. Children just inherently know the one thing that we Westernized adults
often forget: how to interact with others honestly and without expectations.
Perhaps that is why it's so easy to make the Muslim people appear childlike and
helpless on your local American nightly news broadcast. Because their ancient
beliefs dictate a far different kind of leadership than ours, when compared to
our modern dogmas, they regularly appear uninformed and in need of saving.

But they are not uninformed and do not need saving, nor do they
hate Americans. In fact, I felt more welcomed and accepted in Tunisia than on
any of my regular visits back to my own adopted country of the United States.
Landing there after escaping the war in my native country of, I lost my identity
at a very young age. I risked my life in the rough ocean to find freedom and the
chance for a better life and thankfully I found those opportunities in America.
But I was not always welcomed and the sense of having given up my birthplace and
become a nomad of sorts, has never truly faded. This is evident each time I
return home to Orange Country, and while in a grocery store or mall I am asked
by fellow Americans, "Where are you from"? When I say I am an American, too, I
am treated to a healthy dose of suspicion and doubt.

This used to bother me, but not anymore. Having lived in Paris for
the past 6 years, I've come to recognize how incredibly young a country America
truly is. And so when asked, "How do the French see us?" I have to say that our
at worst, the French see America as I do: as a young country that does not want
to learn from the mistakes of our older cousins, but instead insist our cousins
adopt our modern ideals. They see America as a young society that thinks older
societies are outdated and in need of change; as young society that views the
poverty as a sign of weakness and political mismanagement. They see America as a
young nation that thinks because it is better, faster and stronger it is always
right and always in charge.

And in many ways we Americans are faster and stronger and do make
good leaders; but like a bull-headed teenager we are not always right and not
always informed. As we mature, it is my hope that we Americans will come to
understand what history has to teach and that we will use those lessons wisely.
Perhaps then we will stop associating one man's political actions with the
religious beliefs of an entire population.

I also hope that as we mature, America will come to understand
that while poorer nations may lack our external wealth, internally they can
prove far richer because they've found fulfillment in their traditional values
and beliefs. Perhaps then we'll cease resenting other nations for depending on
us as much as we regularly insist they do, or better yet, cease expecting
everyone to speak English whenever we travel and to serve us McDonalds and Coke
alongside their indigenous couscous and maize.

I guess what I most want to convey to everyone reading this is
that the French and the Muslim people as a whole do not hate 'we Americans'.
Paris is not burning and we are not paying for the sins of our fathers. But if
pressed, any Frenchman will tell you that what they do dislike is the arrogance
and intolerance we regularly display for those who disagree with us. And when
looked at from that point-of-view, I have to agree.

Dear Readers,

The place Vendôme is the most famous square in Paris;
partly due to its turbulent history. The exhibition recalls the
different aspects of its history: the splendour of the time of
the monarchy, powerful bankers, superb mansion houses,
elegant fashion and jewelry houses...as well as historical
events including the liberation of Paris, from Jan 24 to Mar. 02
at 11am to 5pm. Closed Saturday and Sunday .
LA PLACE VENDOME, ART POWER AND FORTUNE.
Visits-talks daily at 3.30pm.

Did you know that you could also find weekly listing of Paris
restaurants of all ethnic and price range at our website? We are
partnering with PagesRestos.com to bring you reviews of
restaurants in both French and English.

I visited the Polish mountains for the first time with some

Happy New Year to everyone!

Twelve years after it was created, Présences is one of the
major music festivals in France and shows a cross-section of
contemporary compositions. It's a celebration of music and
musical creativity. There will be 44 composers from 16 countries,
77 works, 30 of which were commissioned by Radio France,
17 concerts, all of which are free. This year's challenge is to
perform all ten symphonies by Hans Werner Henze.

LIVING IN PARIS: ON A BUDGET (part 2 of 5)
When you are visiting Paris for, say a week or two, it's most
likely your days may be spent gazing at the Mona Lisa and
your nights wallowing leisurely along the Seine. That's a great
fantasy that, unfortunately ends the minute you become a resident.
But no one's complaining. For many reasons, the experience of
Paris improves once you are living here, but it takes time to get acclimated.
Suddenly, issues like laundry and which shampoo to use become all
consuming and if your French language skills aren't up to snuff,
it can be a trial figuring things out.

SOCIALIZE AND STAY SLIM
"Why is it that some women are able to waltz into any restaurant,
five nights a week, wolf down a huge meal and still look great?
These women rise to any occasion involving dining out -

And, of course men love these women: we all know how much
men hate it when their dates order only a salad (even though
they love the body that comes with ordering only the salad). "

In grade four, my friend Jacquie stood up in class and announced

EAT LIKE THE FRENCH AND STAY SLIM
How did French girls get so damn lucky? It's not enough that they speak in sexy
accents, have spent their lives in the most romantic cities, and have all the
yummiest designers at their doorsteps. No, they also get to enjoy some of the
richest cuisine on earth, wash it down with champagne, finish with a cigarette
or ten - and still stay slim and lead long lives?

WHO NEEDS PLASTIC SURGERY? FIX FLAWS WITH MAKEUP
Admit it. At some stage in your life you've stood in front of the bathroom
mirror, lifted the corners of your eyes with your fingers and thought, "Wow,
this is what I'd look like if I had a face lift." (Shame on you.) Or perhaps
you're guilty of pulling your ponytail that little bit too tightly so as to give
you those almond eyes you wish nature had provided. (That was just the way my
mother did my hair when I was growing up.)

EMERGENCY! FIRST AID FOR HAIR
Maybe you had a broken heart, perhaps you needed a pick-me-up, or possibly you
just became over-enthusiastic when you saw a fabulous style on a model in a
magazine. (Damn Cindy Crawford and her
Just-One-Flick-Makes-Me-Look-Like-A-Supermodel tresses.)

MOMENTS OF TIME
If you're a busy mom, chances are you'd like nothing more than to
carve out a block of time to spend your way! Can you imagine
having a whole afternoon to organize the linen closets, clean out
the attic, meet a friend for lunch or do some shopping? You probably
can't because you realize that a block of time like that will never
magically appear, that is unless you stop sleeping for a day or two.

FOCUS YOUR LIGHT
Remember when you were a kid how you could make paper
catch fire by focusing the sun's rays with a magnifying glass?
You'd look over your shoulder at the sun, get the angle of the
rays just right, and move the magnifying glass until you could see
a small circle of bright light on the piece of paper in front of you.
Gradually, that circle began to turn brown and the paper began to
smolders until its edges began to curl under as the flame took hold.

FRANCE AND ANTI-AMERICANISM
"Anyone from the US living in France will have encountered
anti-Americanism. Of course, it's not peculiar to France but it runs
deep here, and cuts across politics and social standing. What irks
most, I believe, is that the misunderstanding, not to mention ignorance,
behind it clouds the things most Americans are very proud of,
and which have nothing to do with smart bombs, fast food or Friends."

LEONARD COHEN: SINGER OF MERCY
On October 31, 1988, a brooding figure dressed in black and
resembling a handsomer Dustin Hoffman stopped in Texas to tape
an hour long segment of Austin City Limits, a popular public television
concert series showcasing country music. In a sense, the producers
were playing trick or treat with the audience on this Halloween night.
The music to be played that evening wasn't country, even though the
guest artist recorded an album or two in Nashville. Instead of twangy
guitars and ten gallon hats, the audience witnessed a musical marriage
of Bob Dylan and Charles Aznavour (or maybe Paul Simon and Jacques Brel).

GET THE BEAUTY TREATMENT, WITHOUT PAYING AN ARM AND A LEG
"Fancy a four-hand massage, being anointed with oils, covered
in clay, rubbed all over with a sandpapery mitt, waxed, caressed
and cleaned to within an inch of your life - and all for the price of
a meal for two?"

DECODING DIAGNOSTIC LABELS

Mental health is a continuum As we deal with personal loneliness,

demanding bosses, shaky finances, or just an intense bout of the blues-

whatever the personal hurdle of the day-we maintain an illusion that

somewhere someone else is having a perfect life. If only we could be

like them or even change one thing, like losing weight or earning more

money, life would be perfect for us, too. This is simply not true.

Everyone has problems. Remember a poem many of us read in

high school, Richard Cory, about a man who seemed to have

everything but, to everyone's surprise, killed himself.

BUSYNESS VS. PRODUCTIVITY
Busyness has you moving, all the time, without stopping.
You go from one activity to another or one chore to another or one
commitment to another without taking the time to think about what
you're doing. Every moment is filled with movement. Something else
has to be done. Someone else needs you. Your day is spent reacting
to the next demand or the next crisis. You often feel like a hamster
on a wheel, always running and never getting anywhere.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT BUSINESS FOR YOU
Pay any attention at all to your email inbox and you'd be forgiven for
thinking that the only way to run a business from home is on the
Internet. Sure, many people are running spectacularly successful
Internet-based home businesses. Many, many more are doing so
even more spectacularly unsuccessfully. But what if you're not interested
in running an Internet business? What if you want to start and run a home

Nope. In fact, he frequently poses the following question to his mother:

his father's successful footsteps, but when he receives word of an inheritance

WRITERS IN PARIS
Paris is divided into twenty districts, or arrondissements, that spiral
out from the heart of the city. Most of the writers who lived and
wrote in Paris stayed in only a few of these districts, so they make
an easy way to organize your visit to the city. As you walk from
one home to the next, you'll get a chance to trainer or flaner the
streets of Paris and absorb some of its atmosphere. The walks
may involve a little backtracking here and there, but none of them
is very long or very strenuous--and there are always
cafes, restaurants, and patisseries to pause in if the pleasure
of literary sleuthing needs a little restoration.

A PHOTOGRAPHER'S GUIDE TO PARIS
Paris is one of the birthplaces of photography and a city whose casual
beauty makes for rich material to anyone willing to walk around slowly
and observe carefully. It could be that your eyes will settle on a bit of

WHY THIS DAY IS REMARKABLE?
July 20th, 2002. Wroclaw, Poland. Cool, overcast, generally
unremarkable day. And yet, so remarkable. On this day, four
families received keys to a wonderful new home where they
will raise their children. Four families welcomed the assorted
guests in for coffee, tea and snacks. Four families, each having
worked more than their required 500 hours of sweat equity work
to build their home and the homes of their neighbors, marveled
at the homes they had built together.

QUICK CONNECTIONS AND PET PEEVES
Every so often, I experience an event that renews my faith in the
ability of people to connect. The other day I was dashing to the
dentist to be in time for an appointment for some minor but
detested surgery, when I whipped into a parking space. Upon
getting out of my car, I realized that I had truly whipped and zipped
and that my car was not perfectly between the lines and was
instead parked at quite an angle. In a hurry, I stood looking at my
car, wondering whether or not to take the time to park properly
and align it with all the others.

"BEING POSITIVE AMID A NEGATIVE WORLD"
Sometimes it's hard to be positive when everything around you is going wrong.
It doesn't have to be the big things either. You may wake up in the morning
just feeling plain ole grumpy. Or maybe your spouse woke up on the wrong
side of the bed. Or maybe your coworker or friend is having a bad day.
Whatever the situation, people you deal with everyday can affect how
you look at life in that moment.

So, you have a great idea for a business and, more importantly, the
know-how to bring it into creation. The only thing you're missing is the
cold hard cash to get started. What are your options? Assuming you
don't have a ready line of credit, an expansive bank manager, wealthy
relatives or a substantial stash of retirement savings you're willing to
risk, you're going to have to do some serious homework and legwork.
Fortunately, there are a number of sources of finance for the fledgling
small business entrepreneur, at least one of which may be right for you.

ROAD TO PERDITION
Road to Perdition is one of the most anticipated films of the year.
In addition to giving Tom Hanks an uncharacteristically dark role,
it is director Sam Mendes's follow-up to 1999's Oscar winning
American Beauty. Based on a 'graphic novel' (a fancy term for a
comic book) by Dick Tracy writer Max Allan Collins and illustrator
Richard Piers Rayner, it takes us to Chicago in the winter of 1931
where Michael Sullivan (Hanks) plies his trade as a hit man for
crime-boss John Rooney, played by Paul Newman.

PASSIONATE CONNECTIONS
Strong feelings are often frightening and the more insecure we may feel
the more frightening they may be. Many pop a Paxil, Prozac, Effexor or
other pill in the hope of living life more smoothly. Some exercise madly,
others withdraw, obsess, act out sexually, or attempt in myriad ways of ways
to hold passion at bay. Too few have the courage to sustain deep emotion.
And, few receive support or encouragement to do so. I find this aspect of our
societal stance sad, for when we lose passion, we also lose part of our soul.

PARIS SURVIVAL TIPS
Traveling alone in Paris can be daunting, but pleasant. However, trying to
enjoy the City of Light, in all its richness and glory, while on a budget,
can be downright discouraging. Every place of quality comes with a
price tag to match. However, with a bit of an inventive spirit and a desire
to just have fun, it is possible to experience all the sumptuousness
that is Paris, and still have a few Euros left at the end of the day.

CENTER DE YOGA DU MARAIS
Stepping inside the studio, you take one look at the large, immaculate floor,
the ancient beams and the beautiful fabrics flowing in the walkways and you
might think -- too small for a tap studio, and too big for a ballet class,
but just right for.oh yeah, must be a Yoga center.

A LETTER FROM POLAND
What's going on? It is so hard to explain. It is this overwhelming sense
that I am where I am meant to be. But the statement "where I am"
somehow includes both where I have been and where I am going.
Two plus years in Poland and counting. Countless trips around Poland
and several trips to other countries around Europe. Meeting Habitat folks
- staff and volunteers - from around the world - people so incredible
that they touch your heart and leave a permanent mark. Seeing programs
grow and develop. Feeling connected to a movement so much greater
than the sum of its parts. What did I do to deserve this?

BIKINI FASHION
Optical illusion has been in style for years in the ready-to-wear

SIMPLE GUIDELINES FOR WEARING SANDALS
Summer's almost here and it's time to get ready for the season.
If your lazy days' wardrobe includes barely-there sandals,
take some time to ensure that you're casting your tootsies
in their best light. Because when the toes are exposed, people look.
Make sure you give them a pleasant eye full.

MOVIE REVIEW BY BRIAN W. FAIRBANKS
Tom Clancy's CIA hero Jack Ryan is back in The Sum of All Fears.
At least I think he's back. The last time we saw him, eight years
ago in Clear and Present Danger, he was a seasoned vet of the
clandestine agency, married, and as old and weathered as Harrison Ford.
Now he's a mere researcher, just getting his feet wet in the CIA,
single, and as fresh faced and callow as Ben Affleck.

BOOK REVIEW BY BRIAN W. FAIRBANKS
That's Amore: A Son Remembers Dean Martin is the fourth book about the
laid-back crooner to reach the bookshelves in the past decade. The first,
and best, Dino: Living High in the Dirty Business of Dreams by Nick Tosches,
pleased the critics but was too "literary" for those, like Martin himself, who
wince at pretension. William Schoell's Martini Man was more reader friendly,
but devoted too many paragraphs to Martin's movies, few of which lend
themselves to analysis deeper than their plot summaries in TV Guide.

5TH BIRTHDAY PARTY
Can anyone help me with ideas for my son's 5th birthday party
which is coming up in August. This will be his first birthday with
friends - he is inviting 3 boys and 3 girls. In the past we have only
done the family type of parties with cake, ice cream and gifts and
basically all the adults sit around and chat. What type of games or
grab bag items would be good for the 4 and 5 year old age group?

PARTY FOR 11 YEAR OLD
I told her she could have it here and invite a large amount of
friends since this will be last big BD party for a while...til she
hits 16? It gets harder to do the party stuff as they get older.
After this maybe a movie and pizza with close freinds. Anyway,
I am looking for a few games to keep them busy. Pizza is on
the menu. Any ideas?

Dear Readers,

Our print journal is 99% completed but it has to be postponed
due to lack of funding and sponsorships. We are hoping to find
more sponsors in the next few weeks to help covering the printing
costs. The journal really looks good and has excellent content for

artwork in the journal are unique, chic and different. We know that
everyone is going to approve of it. It will be a great addition to the
English-speaking community in Paris. We will keep you posted.

MOVIE REVIEW BY BRIAN W. FAIRBANKS
In the tiny coastal village of Nightmute, Alaska, the sun never
sets but bursts through the clouds and the blinds of Los Angeles
detective Will Dormer's room twenty-three-and-a-half hours a day.
But is it the sun that is keeping him awake or his conscience?

INSOMNIA, a remake of a 1997 Norwegian film, lets its troubled 'hero'
face his dark night of the soul in constant daylight as if to taunt him
with the knowledge that every secret, every dirty deed, will be brought
to light, sooner or later. Read more at http://www.pariswoman.com/news.htm
BOOK REVIEW BY BRIAN W. FAIRBANKS
Kenneth Tynan came to prominence as drama critic for
England's The Observer where he championed the New Wave
in theatre, passionately praising John Osborne's Look Back
in Anger as "the best young play of its decade." Possessing
a stinging, often wicked, wit, his influence was great and even
frightening. To prevent Tynan from pillaging him in print,
Laurence Olivier invited the critic to serve as a consultant
for the National Theatre from 1962-1971 where Tynan felt frustrated
that, as a critic, he observed rather than created art, becoming "everybody's
advisor...and nobody's boss, not even my own."

Dear Readers,
My son and I had just been back from the South West of France
visiting the Quercy/Perigord region surrounding the Dordogne and
the Lot rivers. This region is famous for its cuisine--the fois gras
and duck specialties. The Perigord nord has been nicknamed the
Valley of a thousand and one castles.

We had taken the 7-day bus tour with the local Parisians. It's a
great way to learn and improve your speaking French. We stayed
at a hotel in Rocamadour--which is the second fortified city of France.
From Rocamadour, we started our tour with guided visits by a local
historian to many Middle Ages cities including Sarlat--the capital
of merchants in the Middle Ages constructed in between the 12th
and the 18th centuries, Martel, Collonges la Rouge, La Roque Gageac--
one of the most beautiful cities of France, Saint cirg Lapopie, Cahors--
famous for its wine, Figeac--one of the most historic and richest
cities in the Middle Ages that should not be missed.

We had visited many caves and a subterranean river called
le Gouffre de Padirac--this natural underground river is about 100m
from the center of the earth with spectacular galleries of stalagmite.
WOW! was my 9 year-old son's reaction when he started to descend
from the first of the 500 stairs that continue after a long elevator ride to
reach the river. We were really impressed and at awe! We also enjoyed a
visit to a duck farm to see how the fois gras is made. You can buy fois
gras direct from here.

I highly recommend everyone to visit the Quercy/Perigord
region to taste its cuisine specialties and to admire the architecture,
lifestyles and history of the Middle Ages.

SNATCHING DEFEAT FROM THE JAWS OF VICTORY
You may find the lure of an online business seductive indeed.
And why not? After all, it holds the promise of true independence -
time and money freedom - from the comfort and sanctuary of your

actor is paired with a younger woman, the age
difference isn't even mentioned. Buy when the woman
is older, well, then it's a "statement," and the point
of the whole movie.
