Description

As parents of children who experience disabilities we fight for our kids to try to find a place in the world that works for him or her. Often it feels like no one understands.

In their mission statement Parents Let's Unite for Kids (www.pluk.org)says "It seemed foolish for each new parent to try to learn all over again what other parents already know and would willingly share." That is exactly what I hope this list, my websites and blog can work towards. Those of with older children can be helpful to parents of young children.

Parenting a complex special needs child is the biggest challenge you could have. While your child is unique, sometimes hearing what other parents or professionals try will give you ideas and jumpstart adapting what works for your own child. You know your child best but it is difficult to communicate his or her needs, strengths and weaknesses to others in a position to help.

My son, Billy Ray is 23 years old and experiences multiple diagnoses (Down Syndrome, Autism, Bipolar, ADHD - just to name a few of his labels). There were no existing systems that seemed to work for him. Out of the struggle to adapt life for Billy Ray came methods for tracking behavior, adapting schedules and environment and advocacy methods that communicate him as he is to those in a position to help him most.

When things began turning around for Billy Ray I was encouraged to share with others. Parenting Your Complex Child (AMACOM Books April 2006) was written to do that. The blog and the book are sort of talking to you. It is my hope that this list will be more two way communication not only with me but with other parents experiencing similar situations.

If there are questions about the book or blog this will be a place you can ask them. I don't have all the answers but as a group we can accomplish more.
