This forum will be used for discussion of The Panhandle Trail, an interstate rails-to-trails project that runs 29 miles between Walker's Mill, Pennsylvania (Near Pittsburgh) to Weirton, West Virginia.

UPDATED: As of August 2008, the trail surface is now complete for the entire trail but keep in mind there are a few rough sections on the trail, mainly the section from Dinsmore to the West Virginia State Line.

The name "Panhandle" comes from the former railroad division that ran through this corridor. It was originally the P.C.C.& St.L.R.R. which stands for Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis. Afterwards it was taken over by the Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR), and then became Penn Central/Conrail. The railroad abandoned the track in the 1980s, and in 1999, conversion began, making the railroad right-of-way into "The Panhandle Trail" for the enjoyment of the public.
