Thanks for joining. I'm hoping this site will help with the
promotion and upkeep of the center's activities.

A huge "Thank-you" to all the parents and children who have just
started participating in the classes, and a special thank-you to
Connie and Julie who have made their time available to teach.

For Second session classes:

The classes we available for second session are the same as the
first= drumming, spanish, and art. The
classes are being held in 6 week sessions starting April 16th and
running through May 21st. May 28th will be a make-up day if any of
the teachers have to cancel classes for a day due to illness or other
unaviodable circumstances. We hope, of course, not to have to use
it, but it's good to have a back-up plan.

New to this session: There is a five dollar holding fee per child,
per class that will be applied to the class fees or materials when
you attend, but is non-refundable. (Any non-refunded money will go
towards special events catering.) If you wish to take classes
starting in April please e-mail with your child's FULL NAME, the
CLASS they wish to attend, and their AGE. I will pencil you in, but
you will not be permanantly on the rolster until I receive the
holding fee which can be mailed by check or money order to Brandy
Bergenstock 305 boyd circle, newport news, 23608. If you wish to pay
for the entire class, please send two separate payments, one with the
holding fee amount ($10 if you want two class for one child, or $5
for just one child in one class), and the other for the remaining
amount. OR you can pay in cash, check or m.o in person by coming to
the Game Days Fridays after some classes. Please see the bottom of
this posting for scheduled game days. I will e-mail you a reciet
when I receive payment.

The class schedules goes like this:
      Art
9:30 older
11:00 younger
Spanish
9:30 younger
11:00 older
Drumming
11:00 all ages
*Connie would like to invite the mothers and fathers to take
advantage of this class while they wait for their children to get
done with their classes. Make the most of that free time.

Drumming has almost an unlimited amount of availablity, but we
need at least 6 students per class to have two separate classes or
the classes will roll into one drumming class starting at 11
o'clock. The drumming classes are being lead by Connie Ralston-
Roberts,a long time homeschooler and member of the drumming comminuty
forover 15 years. She regularly performs and faciliates group
participant for women's shelter's, children's services, commmunity
awareness programs, staff trainings, schools, churches, librearies,
and civic groups. Employing a vast collection of drums and
precussion instruments from around the world, Connie gently
faciliatates participatory workshops with a program designed for
individual group needs. She says, "It is my fervent hope to
conintinue to use world rhythms to teach unity through diviersity,
helping folks discover and expand their abilities to communicate and
express joy togther. Her drum circles:
*encourage self-discovery
*develop creativity
*build confidence
*Stimulate circulation
*Develope awareness of others
*encourage listening skills
AND *excite children young and old!
Connie teaches drumming all over eastern Virginia. If this class
schedule does not fit yours, please contact her to find what other
classes she has available. Connie Ralston-Roberts can be reached at
sagenterprises@c..., or called at 599-0829. Drumming classes are $60
for the seesion and include the use of percussion instrumetns in
class.

The art classes are being lead by Brandy Bergenstock, an artist
and homeschooling mother to two young children. Brandy has been
teaching art to children since 1995, most recently with a group of
local homeschoolers ranging from 5-12 yrs old. The art classes are
divided into two sections; one teaching awareness of drawing and
drawing techniques, and the other section exploring cultures through
their art. She says, "So much of what we know about past, and even
present, cultures is told through their art. It's more like
experiencing history than learning art." All supplies will be
furnished for class, including a large newsprint sketch pad and
drawing pencils. There is limit of ten children per class, so please
sign up if you are interested to reserve your place in class. Art
classes are $30 with a $10 material fee, and offer a $5 discount for
additional family members.

The Spanish class is lead by Julie Edwards, who holds a master
in linguistical education with a focus on French. Julie learned
fluent spanish when she lived in southern Spain for two years. She is
donating her time to bring a bit of Spain to our children and we
appreciate her offer greatly. (French classes may be in the future!
We would like to see if there is enough interest in this class.
Please pipe in if you'd like to see French offered as a language
course.) Spanish is currently only offered at the beginning level.
There is limit of ten children per class, so please sign up if you
are interested to reserve your seat. (This class goes VERY quickly by
the way.) Spanish classes for the session are free with a $10
material fee, which includes a VHS tape and cd-roms games for home re-
enforcement.

Building set up and afterwards:
The UU hall, located at 415 Young Mill Rd in Newport News (23609
for those using Mapquest), is a medium sized building with a nursery
for parents to play with the youngest members of our commmunity in,
another room set off from class activites that can be used for
quiet reading or work, and a fenced in backyard for engergetic
children with supervision.
After classes, we will have Game day fridays there from 1-3
every week in March and every other week in April. There is no
schedule for when that might happen in May. I will post dates when I
know. Please come and check us out after lunch.
if you have any questions you can post them here or e-mail me.

I just sent out another invitation because I didn't think the first
one had gone through because I failed to hit the second "invite

sorry if you got that twice.

Hello,
My name is Sheila.  I am planning on using American School starting next year for my daughter Samantha.  She will be in 10th grade.  We live in Virginia Beach and have homeschooled since middle school.  I am happy to find a group of people using American School.  I hope you will be able to help me when I have questions about the program.  TIA Sheila

ummm... I'm sorry, but I personally do not know what
American School is. We have many members, perhaps one
of them is familiar with that type of schooling, or
cirriculum.
Perhaps you can help me though, this is the second
time in two days I have seen people write, "tia".
What is that?
If you have any questions about the classes or,
perhaps, more questions about the American school, you
can post on the PAHS yahoo group and get answers from
everyone involved. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful,
Brandy

This session we are going over traditiontal female arts and great
female artists in honor of women's history month. The second session
art class, running from April 16th to May 21st, will go over great
modern artists, from the mid 1800 to present, working in order to see
how they influenced each other and later notable artists. We will
explore the type/style of work they did.
The first half of the class will remain the same; working on
drawing and drawing techniques.
If anyone has a particularly interesting object that they like,
please bring it in and we will add to the drawing compositions.

I want to see what the interest is in having a simple potluck and
clothing swap for after classes on April 9th, the last day of first
session classes.
I don't know about everyone else, but I'm looking at what my
children will definitely not be wearing not fall or winter. It would
be wonderful if we could all use this necessary purging to benefit
each other, and perhaps ourselves. The sawping would be totally up
to the person with the clothes, of course, whether you wanted to do
even trades or leave the clothes out for whom ever could use it. The
more people we have the more successful this will be, but even a few
people could benefit if they were the right match-up.
Well, pipe in if you'd be interested.

You can do a couple of things. You can sign-up and pay during class
times. You can come to one of the Game day fridays, March 19 &26, and
April 9th and sign-up in person and pay the holding fee with cash or
check. Or you can write me at Bergiemoore@... and tell me what
classes you would like to be added to. I will pencil your name in and
then premanently add the name of the children to the list of classes
after I receive the holding fee check (no cash please). That can be
mailed to, or dropped off if you live my way, at 305 boyd circle,
newport news,va 23608. The holding fee is just to reserve your place
on the rolster and will be applied toward the total cost of the
material fee or class fee when you come, but is non-refundable. There
is a $5 holding fee per child, per class. So if you have one child
in two classes, it's ten dollars, two kids in a total of four
classes, it's twenty dollars. I will e-mail you a reciept when I
recieve your payment.
You can choose to pay for the entire class ahead of time,
either in person or by mail, but please separate the amounts so that
if you are unable to come by the second week we can return the
remainder of the class or material fee to you. Most people will pay
the remander of the class fees and material when they show up for
classes the first day. Mrs. Edwards, the spanish teacher, prefers
cash payments if you're paying the first day of class. Connie and
myself will take any spendable U.S tender. :)

I spoke to the Downward Dog yoga studio today, and it looks
really, really promising that we may be able to offer yoga classes
before drumming!!! This is still in the pencil stages, but if you're
interested drop me a line and I can realte to her the possible
interest in that event.

Well, you bring up very good point. When i first spoke to Julie
about the class, she wanted to have hand outs that the students can
do at home or look at and re-enforce their learning. She said she is
having trouble making the copies she wants to create for the class
but that they are coming. The video tape and cd-rom game is not the
only supply. But needless to say, you will not need another tape if
you are taking the class again, so can count on at least a $2
reduction in supply fees for the next class. All the props such as
fruit, cards, and other items brought to class have gone towards this
fee. Any money not used for supplies is going to help pay for the use
of the building- heat/air conditioning, electricity, etc; a supply
that we certainly need, but can't take home. So we appreciate all
the partners we have helping to make it possible to use the building
on Fridays. Another reason we worded the payment the way that we did
was for legal reasons. You are all getting a copy right protected
version of Muzzy. You can make and give your friends any number of
copies of any movie or dvd you have purchased, but you can not sell
them. You gave me a dollar for the tape, not the tape's material.
Also, julie wasn't sure how many copies she would need, or what she
was going to going over, not having viewed the Muzzy tapes until
about a week before the class. I wanted to make sure she would feel
free get what ever she needed done.
I am also talking to Julie about getting Spanish/english books as
part of the supply fee, for next time even if we can't do it this
time. So the holding fee of $5 will still be necessary. Thanks-you
for bringing up a point that must certainly be crossing other
particpants minds. I'm going to post this reponse on the Center's
group page.

I'm going to have to re-write the second session's schedule and
pricing. I just talked to Julie and she said she can help all of us
out.... She is going to break the two classes 1 hour classes into
three 45 minute classes. This will make the classes start at 9:20,
10:05, and 11:00. This allows our children who have already taken
the class and show beginning proficentacy to advance to a more
challenging level, while allowing other the benfits of taking the
class until masterary or beginning students who were not with us for
the first session.
I'm reducing the art fees and class cost. Two parents mentioned
that they did not realize their children would taking so many
supplies home, and with limited space and already a number of art
supplies home thought that it would be more cost effective for the
class at large to share in class supplies that get used again and
agian. I'm striking at a balance with the parents who enjoy being
able to take home supplies that they did not have and continue with
the craft practice. SO- the class is being reduced to $25, with a
two dollar saving for additional family members, and a $8 supply
fee. That makes the total for the class $32, instead of $40.
I need to get off the computer right now (i'm not currently at
home) but will rewrite the schedule to reflect the extra spanish
class, and the art different art fees when i get the use of the
computer. My husband added a new softward program and it has totally
ruined the computer, which he is now pretty much rebuilding. *Urg.*
Anyway, regards,
Brandy B.

not need another video or cd-rom game. For more explaination about
the supply fee please go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/pahscenter/
and see posting number 10.
This session has been broken up into three classes, starting a
little earlier. There were so many repeating beginner students and
so many new students it became necessary to break them into three
classes. The younger beginning class works with the very basics of
Spanish. The intermediate Spanish works with using the language
more and working with what they have already learned. The older
Spainsh is very grammer based, and the students had already had some
Spanish and are working on furthering their langugage skills. The
intermediate class is open to both younger and older students, but if
you are an older student and have had some Spanish, it may be
challenging to be in the older class and caught up on what you don't
know. It is your decision.

New to this session: There is a five dollar holding fee per child,

This may seem formal because I'm writing this posting to be put on
the other boards too.

The Peninsula Arts Homeschool Center is having an open potluck and
clothing swap starting after classes on April 9th about 12:15. This
is a wonderful opportunity to exchange your children's outgrown
clothes for ones they can use.
I've had some people ask me how it will work. The owner of the
clothes, of course, is welcome to control how they would like to
exchange, but the draw back to doing a one for one swap is that you
won't have as easy a time seeing what's out there's to trade. I am
going to have open tables arranged by size for everyone to put there
old clothes at and exchange for new ones from. I can't think of a
size that wouldn't be useful to someone. This is the first year we've
done this (and if it goes well I hope to have one in late Novemeber
to trade old summer clothes-I thought late october at first but then
I remembered how we always get that Indian Summer in early to mid
November). :)
See you there!

I would like to announce the addition of a 4 week session that would
start June 4th and run through the 25th, the last Friday of that
month.
The classes offered would be Art and Drumming.
Drumming is $10 a session, with Connie teaching the first two
sessions, and Jo teaching the last two. Jo is also an experienced
drummer who taught Wee little drummers, a toddler and early childhood
music class, for many years. We thank her for helping make drumming
possible for the this summer session.
Art will be $16 with a $7 dollar supply fee. I realize many people
are planning vacations but would also like to have classes available
when they're still in town, so please speak with me about any fridays
you know will not be attending and we can rate the class fee
accordingly. I will be focusing this session on sculpture- so if
your children like to build, hammer, or construct, send 'em on
over. We will be going over artists Louis Nevelson, Alexander
Calder, Picasso, and Henry Moore.
Older class (9-teen) runs from 9:30-10:55 and younger class (5-8)
runs from 11:00-11:45. All supplies will be provided.
There will be not be a five dollar holding fee for this session, but
the teachers would like to assess interest so please notify me if you
plan on attending. Classes may be canceled due to lack of attendance.
Thanks,
Brandy B.

Subject: [pahscenter] June 4-25 Summer classes- art and drumming

I will be focusing this session on sculpture- so if
you're children like to build, hammer, or construct, send 'em on
over.  We will be going over artists Louis Nevelson, Alexander
Calder, Picasso, and Henry Moore.
Older class (9-teen) runs from 9:30-10:55 and younger class (5-8)
runs from 11:00-11:45.  All supplies will be provided.

Brandy,

Anna has a very mild case of chickenpox and while she feels just fine,
out of deference to those moms who may not want their children exposed,
she will not be at classes today.

As for June, she would like to take your art class.

Thanks, Joan

I'm posting this here for three reasons; to inform anyone who didn't
see it on the Vaeclectic group baord, so there will be an easy
referance here to refer to- since we don't get many messages, it
should be on the same page for a while- and three; to remind myself,
since I'm sure to forget between now and then. So here's the info-
the building is just up the road a ways (towards Hampton) form the
PAHS Center.

Brandy,

We need a confirmation on whether or not Julie was going to hold a
make up class this Friday, for the 10:10 spanish class. We voted on
it but it wasn't decided for sure. Could you please confirm her
plans with us, thanks.

advanced make-up spanish tomorrow. I'll also be giving a free-be art
class for anyone who wants to come and join it before or after their
spanish. We will be going over line quaility for the older kids and
making flower presses for the younger kids. Hope this makes it to

I got to the school this morning at 9:35. I hope I didn't miss
anyone. My son was having a bathroom moment that could not be
rushed. He decided he had visit the porclein throne as I asked him
to put his shoes on to leave!
I try my very best to arrive early, but every so often I can not
help being late. If I say we're having class, know that I WILL be
there and we will make up the time in another class or at the end of
that class. I'm sorry for any incovenice this caused anyone. See
you all next week.

The Peninsula Fine Arts Center is exhibiting Women artists and Loius
Nevelson, one of my favorite female sculpturers. I am planning on
arranging a group tour of this exhibit the first Tuesday in JULY.
(Tuesdays they have painting in the children's area.) I haven't
picked a time yet. I'm thinking about 11 or so. The museum is not
actually that huge, so an hour is plenty of time to look around and
soak in all the sites. We will be free to look around after the
guided tour is given. If I can arrange a tour of ten or more
intersted people, it would be $1 per child and $2 per adult, verses
the normal $4 a person charge, plus we get a tour with a guide which
I have always enjoyed. I'd like to know how many people are
interested. If the number is large enough, we may need two guides
and the museum needs to know that.
Thanks,
Brandy

I see we got a spammer on the list. Please do not un-scribe from the
list just because of their message. I am sure Brandy will "fix the
problem". Sometime you just get lumps in the gravy. sheila

Sorry about that. Hope it won't happen again. Maybe I'll have to
add something in the "home info" area about spamming. Really, it
reads like spam form a mile away. Does that stuff work on anyone?

Brandy,
Almost every list I am on that has open enrollment was spammed this year.  There must be people out there just looking for groups to attack.  At least this one wasn't pron.  One of my list got hit with some really nasty stuff.  (and some people on the list blamed the owner of the list!!!).  Just FYI sheila

If you child is taking art for the June session, I'd appreicate if
they could bring a pair of pliers to work with. I have several
pairs, but not enough for everyone of the younger students. Thanks
so much,

This will be the last classes of the summer for the center. We are
happy to have an end of the year POT LUCK with everyone who has ever
attended, or even considered attending classes ;). After the pot
luck, the children can join in Game day, bring your favorite game to
share and play with the others, while the parents can sell and buy
school supplies and educational related equipment and books. I know
there's a huge sale coming up on July 17th, but you don't have to
wait until then to free up some space on your bookshelves or the
corners of your rooms.
I look to seeing everyone on Friday,
             Brandy B.

So the site got spammed again..... Guess I'm going to have to make
it like the other homeschool group where the first post of each
member is pending until I see the new member is not a spammer. Sorry
about that.
