Just a quick post about the upcoming semester. It will start on January 8th and
run 12 weeks to March 26th.
In art class: We will be learning about contemporary artists and their use of
media in art. We'll get to do more sculpture, designing, painting, drawing, and
creating beautiful art pieces in general. :) Same hours and ages as this
semester- 1-2pm is art 1 for ages 6-10, and art II is from 2:30-3:30 for 11+.
In science: Mrs. Jenni will continue the study of the human body & run in 3, 4
week sessions. That class will be from 2:30-3:30 for new students, and from
1-2 pm for continuing students. The anatomy and physiology class is for 8-12 yr
olds. Weekly homework will be assigned.
I will post more details in a day or two. Thanks, as always, for your interest
in what we teach :)
Regards,
Brandy

I would love to see what everyone's design is. If you got your image off the
internet, send me a link so I can check it out. I've had two people tell me
what they are planning on using; One was great; the other needed to rethink
their idea. It would be better if you had another day to come up with an
alternative image if your idea will no work, so send me what you're working on
if you can. I will have a few generic ideas as back-ups just in case.
I hope everyone can make it to the potluck lunch tomorrow. We're making
goblin's thumbs and witch's teeth to eat :)

Brandy

You are invited to the 4th annual PAHS Halloween lunch potluck this Friday from
12-1pm at the UU church where classes are held. Bring a dish to share and wear
a costume if you are so moved :) We'll be hunting down skeletons and playing
lots of running games to wear off those sweet treats the kids will be eating.
Hope to see you there,
Brandy
This came across one of my art boards. I thought since we are homeschoolers, we
might have a unique perspective to what the day in life of our child looked like
compared to many other American children. This project would be easy (digital
photographs throughout your day ), free (but you do have to register with the
site), and receive a world wide audience (how cool is that?).
I hope you will join your child in recording their day,
Brandy
Hi everyone -
I'm helping coordinate an international K-12 student photography project, and I
need your help to spread the word.
On Tuesday November 10, students from around the world will document their
(probably ordinary) day with photography, videos, and writing. We have
commitments from schools in at least 24 countries to participate - from
Argentina to Yemen - and a lot more are becoming interested.
Students will document everything from morning chores to mealtimes to getting to
school to family life, in the style of those "A Day in the Life of
[America/Australia/Russia/etc.]" and "24/7" coffee table books that have become
popular since the late 1980s, only this will essentially be "A Day in the Life
of Students"!
The photos and writing will be posted on a forum hosted by the international
nonprofit iEARN ( iearn.org ) for discussion by students. iEARN does require a
membership to register, but membership is free in most countries other than the
United States (we pay - alas!)
If you know any K12 teachers who dabble in documentary photography - especially
those working outside the USA, please let them know about it.
We've started a (very basic and incomplete, but growing) website at
http://www.onedayinthelife.org on which we hope to publish some of the results
after the end of November.
It should be a lot of fun - and a very interesting cross-cultural study. Please
spread the word!
Best-

We will be covering the principle of emphasis this Friday. Our project will
include using Indian ink and bamboo brushes. I HIGHLY recommend bringing an art
shirt. The brushes can flick and leave tiny to quite noticeable sized
permanent, black dots on clothing.
(And in case your child, asks, no the clay pots are not fired yet. We will get
hose back in about 3 more weeks.)
See you on Friday,
Brandy
I will be living with my sister in Hampton for several months. I current;y
homeschool our 3 boys, ages 10, 7, and 5. I am interested in getting them
involved in outside activities.
I am a homeschool mom to 4 children Nicholas, Jacob, Payton and Shailyn we are
new to the group and wanted to say hello and thank you for allowing our family
to be part of your group. I look forward to everything the group has to offer.
Again I am new so you may have to bare with me until I get the hang of the group
and activities and such
Thank you for approving us to be part of your group we look forward to hearing
from you all soon

There will be a blood drive at the church where classes take place next Friday
from 11-8pm. Please consider giving blood while your child takes class if you
are able.
Science class will take place in the pink room off of the art room just this
week.
Regards,
Brandy
There were a few people missing from class on Friday when classes started. This
isn't a problem. You can come in early- 45-30 early and do the project you
missed last week. If you're in the second class, please only come 30 minutes
early, as I will be finishing with the 1st class if you come earlier than that.
The homework for those in class on Sept 4th was to finish making your timeline
and to finish adding pattern to the creature pieces you received. It's best to
leave them mostly in tack. I find punching out all the pieces is ok, bu does
add some level of difficulty to finding the piece you need later. We will
assemble the creatures in class and begin our Mayan stylized cartoon cells.
REgards,
Brandy
Hi everyone! September 4th is only 2 weeks away so this is just a reminder that
the class listed below is still available thru the PAHS center in Newport News.
Basic Anatomy and Physiology
Time: 1-2 pm (ages 8-12)
Basic science:
Class fee: $70.00
Materials fee: $15.00
Fall Semester subjects will include: Cellular, Circulatory, Respiratory, and
Digestive systems. Each will be broken up into 3 week sections:
#1 – Information dissemination (classroom time);
#2 – Craft/Project (lab time) ;
#3 – Games/Review.
Some of the fun labs we will be doing will include making model cells, learning
how to use a microscope, and learning first hand how blood and food travel
through our body.
If interested or if you want more info, please contact me at
jennij1967@...
or go to the PAHS yahoo group for more info.
Hope everyone has a peaceful semester!
Jennifer Hershman
Thank-you to everyone who is currently sign up in younger art.
The Wells, Zawisza, Bevin, Roe, Cunningham, Hudgin, Hershman and the Mabe
families will filling out this semester's younger art class.
I just finished writing up my supply list, and we'll be working on several
new processes and well as bringing back a few favorites. This semester's big
project will be learning to silk screen from the start. All of our projects in
compositional design (balance, unity, rhythm, etc.) will lead up to this one big
project.
There are 4 spots left in older art. Science has several openings, be sure to
sign up if that's a class you're looking forward to.
Thanks and see you all on Sept 4th!
Regards,
Brandy
I'm sorry but Mrs. Paul will not be able to teach the ASL class for our group.
ASL is not going to be offered for this coming semester. Since there did
seem like there was an interest, I will continue to look for an ASL teacher to
come to the church and give classes, but it won't be for this coming season.
Science and art will still be offered of course :)
Thank everyone for understanding,
Brandy
> Hey Brandy!
>
> Is this still on Fridays?
Yeah, still on Fridays here in NN at the PAHS co-op. If Friday's don't work
for, Mrs. Paul is also teaching this class in Williamsburg on Tuesdays at 10-11.
And I teach art at different times there as well.
Also what are the dates the SL class will run?
ASL will run Sept 4th through November 20th. The science class and the ASL will
run the full 12 weeks. My family has an opportunity to travel, so art is only
11 weeks this semester.
Hope this helps,
Brandy
Talk to you soon :)

Hey Brandy!
Is this still on Fridays? Also what are the dates the SL class will run?
Justin & I will more than likely sign up for this. I figure even if he has his
surgery before it ends I will be able to work it out with Melanie to come over
to my house to finish up whatever needs to be completed.
Hope your summer is going well! Have fun this coming week with the D & D camp.
Tell Ezra we've been thinking of him. Would love to get the boys together one
day before Aug. 20th. Let me know what would work for you. If you wanted to
drop Ezra off for the afternoon one day & go do something with Mayah that would
be cool. Or if you wanted to stay & catch up with each other that would be okay
too.
Talk to you later!
Peace!
Doreen :-)

So the schedule looks like this:
First period- 1-2
Art, younger (5-9)
Science anatomy and physiology (8-12)
Second period- 2:30-3:30
Art, Older (10+)
Sign Language (8+)
About Mrs. Melanie Paul:
I've been using American Sign Language for the past 30 years in conjunction with
my various job positions at the Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind at
Hampton. Additionally, I've developed and taught American Sign Language classes
for several years at Christopher Newport University for their Adult Continuing
Education Classes, I have also taught ASL at Langley Air Force Base and I am
presently teaching a Beginning ASL class there. In 2007, I had a
State-required sign-language evaluation at VSDBM-H using the "Sign Communication
Proficiency Evaluation" for which I received an Advanced-Level of signing
proficiency.
This course will teach basic American Sign Language (ASL) signs, numbers, and
the alphabet. Interacting with each other, students will learn and practice
signing simple sentences and finger-spelling to achieve moderate proficiency.
Students will be able to assimilate their sign language knowledge in real-world
situations and communicate expressively and receptively with deaf individuals.
Students will also learn/discuss about myths of deafness and the reality of deaf
culture.
This class is for students 2nd grade and older, no one under 8 please.
Cost: $60 (minimum of 5 students (max- 15), so please tell your friends!)
The only additional cost for this course is the purchase of the course textbook.
The textbook for this course is: A Basic Course in American Sign Language, by
Tom Humphries, 1994 { ISBN: 0932666434 }. The student can purchase either the
softcover, hardcover or spiral-bound edition of this book.
The least expensive copies (used) of this book can be found on-line, mostly at
Amazon.Com from $3.00 to $25.00. This book can also be special-ordered from
Barnes & Noble, but at the new, higher price- 47.50.
An opportunity has come up in November for my family to travel so I am
shortening this coming semester art lessons to 11 weeks. This seemed the best
solution to me.
The new price for art classes is $78, reflecting the shortage of one class.
So the art class dates are Sept 4th to November 13th. Science classes will
continue as planned from 9/4 to 11/20.
Thanks for understanding,
Brandy
Thanks for this! Anna and I got on and had fun making pics with all the
neat tools.

Dear Brandy,
As the school year winds to a close, we wanted to offer you a LIMITED-TIME
opportunity to download a remarkable new software program called "ArtRage". Now
you can paint and draw on your computer with tools you already know how to use!
ArtRage is packed with real world tools like oils, felt pens and pencils. Smear
colors together as you paint, construct perspective drawings with rulers, and
create subtle shading with airbrushes and stencils. Perfect for beginning
students to advanced artists!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
*FREE* DOWNLOAD -- 3 WEEKS ONLY!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The full version of ArtRage is normally $25 to purchase. For a limited-time,
Artsonia is allowing our teachers to download a fully-licensed version for FREE!
To take advantage of this special opportunity, visit the following link (or
click on the "ArtRage" banner in your teacher start page):
www.artsonia.com/teachers/artrage
You can also view online demos of how the program operates, before you decide to
download and install on your system.
Artsonia will also be hosting a contest in the fall with artwork created using
ArtRage. This download gives you the opportunity to try out the software this
summer, then teach your students how to use it in the fall.
As always, there is no obligation to download the software or participate in any
contest -- we wanted to offer this as a small thank-you for your participation
this year.
Best wishes,
Your Friends at Artsonia
We are having a end of the year potluck from 12:30 to 2pm. Please come join us
for some fellowship and to usher in the summer months!
If you participated in the ceramics class, you will able to retrieve the
rest of your projects. I already know some third quarter participants can't
make it- that's fine I will hold your material safely for you until you can pick
it up.
Doreen has signed up for a veggie tray. Mayah and myself are bring cookies and
banana bread. Feel free to bring what you are moved to make or buy on the way to
the potluck :)

"My goal in offering this class is to give students the information they need to
develop an educated appreciation for how wonderous and amazing the human body
really is. There will be only factual information and NO THEORIES presented in
this class; however, students and parents are encouraged to challenge any
information given."
Fall Semester subjects will include: Cellular, Circulatory, Respiratory, and
Digestive systems. Each will be broken up into 3 week sections:
#1 – Information dissemination (classroom time);
#2 – Craft/Project (lab time) ;
#3 – Games/Review.
There will be some research/homework on week #1 for each subject, in order to
encourage self exploration. The total amount of time involved will depend on how
in-depth each student wants to be. Some will naturally be more inquisitive than
others. The information each student gathers will be presented to the class. I
will encourage each student to present his/her own information, but it is not a
requirement. There will be no testing.
There are no books required. All materials will be provided.
ART:
Fee: $85 (no supply fee)
The art classes are lead by Brandy Bergenstock, an artist
and homeschooling mother to two children. Brandy strives to make
projects that the average person would not have the knowledge to do
(reverse casting) or projects that are just too messy to do at home
(oil paint lithographs). She has been teaching art to children since
1995. The art classes are divided into two sections; one teaching
awareness of drawing and drawing techniques, and the other section
exploring great masters from modern to contemporary art through
various materials and resources. All supplies will be furnished for
classes, including a large newsprint sketch pad and drawing pencils.
There is limit of ten children per class.
This 12 week art session, we will be working on all new projects for this
exciting semester. That line up of artists is still developing. I will post
that information on my website when I get it finalized. The students will
compile an art time line folder, and older students (9+) will be encouraged to
give a speech, or write a paper, on their favorite artist. On occasion, there
will be
outside class work for art.
If you would like to see art work from previous classes check
out our work on Artsonia.com, and add zip code look-up "23608".
Artsonia is a great way to share your child's work with relatives and
friends far away.
Registering: Parents will pay the supply fee, if any, or a ten dollar
holding fee, per child, per class, that will be applied to the class
fees when they attend, but is non-refundable. (Any non-refunded money
will go towards special events catering.) If you wish to take classes
starting in August please e-mail with your child's FULL NAME, the
CLASS they wish to attend, and their AGE. I will pencil you in, but
you will not be permanently on the roster until I receive the holding
fee which can be mailed by check or money order to
Brandy Bergenstock,
305 Boyd circle,
Newport news,Va 23608.
If you wish to pay for the entire class, please send two separate
payments, one with the holding fee amount (for example $10 if you want
two class for one child, or $5 for just one child in one class), and
the other for the remaining amount. OR you can pay in cash, check or
m.o in person to the UUFP. I will e-mail you a receipt when I receive
payment.
Building set up and afterwards:
The UU hall, located at 415 Young Mill Rd in Newport News (23609
for those using Googlemaps), is a medium sized building with a nursery
for parents to play with the youngest members of our community in,
another room set off from class activities that can be used for
quiet reading or work, and a fenced in backyard for energetic
children with supervision.
If you have any questions you can e-mail me or post them on

This 12 week art session, we will be working on all new projects for this
exciting semester. That line up of artists is still developing. I will post that
information on my website when I get it finalized. The students will compile an
art time line folder, and older students (9+) will be encouraged to give a
speech, or write a paper, on their favorite artist. On occasion, there will be
outside class work for art.
If you would like to see art work from previous classes check
out our work on Artsonia.com, and add zip code look-up "23608".
Artsonia is a great way to share your child's work with relatives and
friends far away.
Registering: Parents will pay the supply fee, if any, or a ten dollar
holding fee, per child, per class, that will be applied to the class

starting in August please e-mail with your child's FULL NAME, the

elementary students. Her background includes a BS in Biology from Frostburg
State University in Maryland and a BS in Medical Technology from Austin Peay
State University in Tennessee.
"My goal in offering this class is to give students the information they need to

this class; however, students and parents are encouraged to challenge any
information given."

Digestive systems. Each will be broken up into 3 week sections: #1 –
Information dissemination (classroom time); #2 – Craft/Project (lab time); #3 –

encourage self exploration. The total amount of time involved will depend on
how in-depth each student wants to be. Some will naturally be more inquisitive

class. I will encourage each student to present his/her own information, but it
is not a requirement. There will be no testing.
