The P48 Modeler is a forum dedicated to scale railroad models in 1:48. The group is intended to provide a place where serious modelers can discuss and exchange ideas on 1:48 scale railroad modeling with an emphasis on Proto48. We encourage photos and material related to 1:48 scale models.
Proto48 was created to accurately model AAR prototype wheel contours and track gauge. It is different than traditional O gauge. P48 uses 56.5" as the standard for track and wheel gauge unlike the NMRA standard of 60" between the rails. Proto48 modelers strive for realism in the total model with accurate details, paint and lettering on their equipment.
Proto 48 is a subset of O scale (1:48 scale). The scale has several names that are currently in use or have been used in the past:
