Wide Bay Volunteers (Qld)
The organisation is currently involved in pressing forward the concept of a
medal, to be awarded to all volunteers after a set number of years' service,
regardless of position or type of employment. Such a medal can be presented to
members of the Emergency Services of each state, also to voluntary instructors
of the army/navy/air force reserves or cadets, or to any person involved for the
requisite time in any voluntary work.
Mr Norm Freeman, with whom I had the pleasure of working during the first three
of my eight year's service with TS Bundaberg Naval Cadet Reserves, has designed
and created the medal, which can be seen on
www.widebayvolunteers.asn.au/volmedal, with the intention that it be awarded
after two years service. Of course, this is impracticable due to
administration difficulties, and the problems created if the medal were made
retrospective.
Wide Bay Volunteers has already emailed all Federal upper and lower-house
members, and all Queensland politicians, plus all local government
representatives pertinent to the Wide Bay, all member-organisations of WBVRA;
and received several encouraging responses in favour of such a concept.
We are now asking for letters of support for the concept from all members of
Andy's OzVPM, whether Australian or overseas, and would be most grateful for any
support offered in this fashion. Replies should be directected by email to my
home address or to wbvra@....
Personally, I am wholly in favour of such an idea, and will press forward with
the PR programme already in development stages regardless of support or lack of.
I sincerely request all members to seriously consider the notion of such an
award, ask themselves 'are our volunteers worthy of such acknowledgment?', and
then consider the possibility of their supporting Mr Freeman's work.
Sincerely,
Ian Foster
