Dear all

The Lindy newsletter suggests it might be worth going down to the Rocks
this Sat to listen (dance?) to some Swing music.

Anyone interested?

Sat 14 Dom Halpin and the Suspects, 11.45am-3.15pm,
The Rocks, Argyll Place, central Sydney

****

By the way my ballroom dance went down very well even though not many
people came. The barman was so happy with it he extended our closing
time to 12.30am free of charge.

We had seven couples doing the waltz at midnight after only two lessons
and dances.

I encourage you all to come along and enjoy the evening at the next dance.

Swing Jazz Concert

Fans of Big Band-era style jazz shouldn't go past this concert featuring some
of Australia's best and most-loved players of the form. Trumpeter James
Morrison's blustery showmanship has become a trademark in Australia, as well
known as Ken Done's pastel colourings. He's joined for this show by crooners
Kerrie Biddell and Emma Pask, who over the years have proven to be smooth
foils for Morrison. Swing City is led by Morrison's brother John, who's
assembled a host of fine young musicians for a full-blown recreation of 1930s
and 1940s jazz performances.

Hi all,
Does anybody have any tips on where to go in Melbourne to see some
good swing and/or rockabilly? Hell, at this point I'd even settle for bad
swing! :0)
I've just moved down here from Sydney and I'm at a loss.
Any help would be appreciated!
Cheers,

Subject: Royal Crown Revue. Interview with Daniel Glass by Rudy Lee
digbyr@...
Send Email Send Email

Royal Crown Revue - 25 July 2000

Daniel Glass, the drummer from Royal Crown Revue, logged in to the
Rolling Stone chat room and shared his views on french fries, Eminem
and life on the road. Read on...

Ruby Lee: Ok, so is RCR definitely coming back in October?
spunk: Are you playing livid fesival?
Daniel Glass: As of this moment, we are in the process of planning
the October trip, which should include an appearance at Livid,
although nothing is yet confirmed.

BlathMac: Where did you get your band name from?
Daniel Glass: The band name comes from a 1940's radio show of the
same name, sponsored by one of the many companies calling themselves
Royal Crown.

spunk: What is happening between Ms Velvet and Scotty?
Daniel Glass: No comment on the sex lives of my band mates! You'll
have to ask them yourself...

skahoy: What did you think of Fanny's at Newcastle?
Daniel Glass: Fanny's was, as we say in the states "a trip!" But what
a great crowd (especially the gals that wouldn't stay off the stage)!

spunk: Will that tour include more Melbourne/ Victoria shows?
Daniel Glass: We hope to do about 2-3 weeks is Australia next time.
We are going to TRY and actually record a live record, hopefully over
two nights at the corner, since you guys have been screaming the
loudest.

treenie: What do you guys think of Australia? And of its music scene?
Daniel Glass: We'll try to hit most of the places we hit last time,
but all the travelling and gigging was kinda rough on us (19 days in
a row), so we may take things a bit easier this time.

skahoy: How did you end up touring (or hearing of) the sluggers?
Daniel Glass: We dig the sluggers - had some drunken good times with
all o' them last time. I'm sure we'll do some more next time.
Michelle, their manager, her hubby and Velvet are all in the states
right now.
spunk: Oh... lucky Scott (grin).

spunk: What did you guys think of Offshore? Was your snot black for a
week afterwards?
Daniel Glass: We hardly had time to enjoy the Offshore. We got to
hang with our buddies in the Living End, but we had to rush out so we
could get on a plane the next morning. Great crowd though.

stephen: So are you planning to come to Canberra?
Daniel Glass: Please refresh my memory as to the location of
Canberra...
spunk: Canberra is the Australian capital!

Daniel Glass: I have a question. Is there still a buzz about the band
down there (any radio or video play, for example) and are folks
looking forward to our return?
stephen: Well I am, if you're coming to Canberra.
Miss Poetry: Looking forward with great anticipation!
Ruby Lee: Everyone is talking about the return of RCR.

skahoy: Does RCR get annoyed with people moshing rather than dancing?
Daniel Glass: We don't give a rat's ass what people do - they can
mosh, lindy, do the fuckin' french fry, as long as they enjoy
themselves. We don't need to have a bunch of swingers in the crowd.
spunk: You guys were the best band at Offshore... closely followed by
Primus - but the mosh for RCR was so much more comfortable...
Daniel Glass: On many of the Warped tour shows we did, people were
moshing and stage diving like mad. One night in Lake Tahoe, there was
practicaly a riot at one of the shows.

BlathMac: What's the best song to perform?
Daniel Glass: The best song, hmm... Hard to say - "Hey Pachuco" is
always a fave of mine, of course, but I like "Watcha Doin Tonight"
and "Bronx Hello" and "Beyond the Sea" because I can play brushes.

BlathMac: I like french fries, how do they cut the french fries so
thin?
Daniel Glass: In Australia, are they chips or french fries?
Ruby Lee: Chips!
skahoy: Depends on the thickness.

Daniel Glass: Okay, enough already with the chips. What do you guys
want to see and hear on the next RCR tour?
spunk: More beebop.
BlathMac: I want to see some drums smashed.

spunk: What drums do you use?
Daniel Glass: What drums? Well I use 1957 WFL's here at home. I think
on the next Australian tour I'll be using Sleishman's - they are a
great Aussie company!

Miss Poetry: BamBam is your playing "All your own to measure upon
your own and not anothers pattern" or is there a particular
inspiration?
Daniel Glass: Hmm. I try to allow the music to come through me. I
think that's the ticket - trying to just get to a place of 0 self-
consciousness. Poetic enough of an answer for ya?
Miss Poetry: Close!

skahoy: What do you all do after a show?
Daniel Glass: Again, I have no comment about what goes on after
shows. If you're there, you'll know about it!

Ruby Lee: Bam bam, Josh here, what's happening man? Where's my jacket?
Daniel Glass: Josh, ya bum. We've been trying to get the cool jackets
since we got back, but the evil corporate scums got wise and bought
them all up for "big" bands. Hopefully have more next time.

spunk: What did you think about Area 7 Danny?
Daniel Glass: Don't know enough about AREA 7, ska, right?
skahoy: AREA -7 = SKA.

BlathMac: When did your band form?
Daniel Glass: The band has been around for almost 12 years. Eddie,
James and Mando started it.

stephen: What would you guys reckon is RCRs best song?
Daniel Glass: Our best song is not for us to decide. What are your
favorite songs by RCR? What do want to hear from us on the next tour?
spunk: I like the last song on Walk on Fire. It is cool. What is the
title?
Daniel Glass: The last song on Walk on Fire is called "Mr Meschugge".
It's Yiddish for crazy person, kind of like the song. The style is
based on a 30's dude named Raymond Scott.

Miss Poetry: Where are you talking to us from and the time?
Daniel Glass: I'm at home in LA where it's now 2:47 AM. Later this
week we're going to Vegas, and then its back home for another show
before leaving for Japan on Saturday morning. Here's a crazy one for
you. We leave for Japan Sat AM, arrive Tokyo Sunday AM, play there
Sunday PM, Fly home Monday AM, arrive LA Monday AM 30 minutes after
we left!

skahoy: Was RCR left out of "swingers" because its on Universal and
you are on Warner?
Daniel Glass: The Swingers scene at the Derby was built around RCR,
but our label and mgmt thought it was too small peanuts and wouldn't
license the material. That's why neither of them work for us any
longer!

spunk: What other TV shows have you been on besides Buffy?
Daniel Glass: We've been on a variety of TV shows, I don't know if
you get 'em down under. Viva Variety, Roseanne, lots of Comedy
Central specials, the Today show etc.

Miss Poetry: What's your favourite album Dan?
Daniel Glass: Favorite RCR album, or other?
Miss Poetry: Other.
Daniel Glass: I don't really have any favorites - music is just
amazing and I like to constantly keep new varieties flowing into my
head constantly. Right now I've been listening to a lot of R&B from
the 50's.

spunk: I think Paul McD is in love with Scott. Not many special
guests talk back on air like he did.
Daniel Glass: Scott Steen as you may have noticed, talks back all the
time. He's what you call a smartass.

spunk: What do you think of Eminem?
Daniel Glass: Eminem, hmm... Well, you might think he is some kind of
rebel, but we toured with him on the US Warped and he was an ass -
had his bodyguards beating people up on stage - other bands, even. It
wasn't in keeping with the brotherhood-like spirit of the tour.

spunk: Did you design the web page? If so, it is excellent,
congratulations.
Daniel Glass: Yes, I didn't do the actual programming, but the
website is kinda my baby. Has been a six year ongoing project.

spunk: Is there a new album coming out in the next 3 months?
Daniel Glass: We are in the beginning stages of planning a new studio
record. It'll be something completely different, but I can 't say
when it'll be out. If we do a live one, that'll be out by the end of
the year. Hopefully!

treenie: Who writes your music?
Daniel Glass: We all write, but Eddie does the majority of lyrics and
Bill does lots of arranging. I wrote 5 songs on Contender, but only 1
for Walk on Fire.
spunk: Wow which one?
Daniel Glass: "The Stranger". It's quiet, but the words will
hopefully make ya think.

spunk: And geez you guys are talented... I play the cello at a really
high standard as well as guitar and piano and I know heaps of theory
but I'd never be able to produce anything as technical like the stuff
RCR does.
Daniel Glass: Give it time, you never know what you can be capable
of. Keep trying. We've done five records and still can't get it right!

spunk: "I bought a piece of mind instead of grace," what does it mean?
Daniel Glass: "I bought a bill of sale instead of grace" - it means
the character played into the stranger's hand instead of being true
to his own heart and sense of right and wrong.
spunk: Sorry (meek) I don't read lyrics while listening to albums.
Daniel Glass: I never read lyrics either, but when you try to write
some, they all of a sudden become real important!

Miss Poetry: You should do these chats or other more often.
Daniel Glass: We'll try to do more chats on the RCR site - it's just
that I'm the only one that puts these things together...

Daniel Glass: This has been my pleasure - stay in touch with us via
the site, and make sure you sign up for Club RCR, the email list, so
we can keep you updated. Ciao.

Dear all

Apologies to those of you who receive this email more than once.
Please extend this email to anyone else you know who may be interested.

As some of you know I am involved in Lindy Hop (a reborn dance style
from the 1920s). Many of us in Lindy are starting to go to venues
with live bands who often also play ballroom music such as Cha Cha,
Rumba, Waltz and progressive Barn dances.

I miss ballroom and see an opportunity for the Lindy people to
learn a little ballroom and my ballroom friends to learn some lindy.

At this point I am seeking an expression of interest and to bring out
all the ballroom dancers from the past. If you are interested in the
below proposal please reply to me. Also please forward this email to
your Lindy or Ballroom friends that I am unable to contact directly.

Begineers Social Ballroom Dance
*******************************
Five Dock RSL Bowling Club
Fri nights once per month (about 2 weeks apart from the Lindy dance)
Cost $10

I will teach Cha Cha, Rumba, Waltz and progressive Barn dances with
the help of some of my ballroom friends. I used to do this at Sydney
Uni when I was on the Exec of SUBDS (Sydney Uni Ballroom Dance Soc).
Perhaps more advanced dances later.

There will be an opportunity for Lindy daning also.

I would like to see dances again where we had 100+ people coming along.
Current dates proposed might be 1 Sept, 6 Oct, 3 Nov, 1 Dec.

Back in town for now...

I'm planning on going & would be up for dinner also.

I can't find any definitive confirmation of this, but isn't there supposed
to be a swing cruise this Saturday? I'm thinking about having a BBQ
beforehand since I'm right across the harbour.

Thanks for setting up the ozswing group. I had a look at the web page
today and the email archive - cool.

The Swingout Sydney site also has an email alert that we can all subscribe
to. Also Tia's web site - though it is a little inactive at present.

Dear Friends in Asia/Pacific region,

The Tokyo Swing Dance Society (of which I, Hiroyuki Yamada, am the
founder)
would like to announce a swing-dance event on 26-28 May 2000 to
celebrate
the 86th birthday of Frankie Manning.

As you may know, Frankie Manning is one of the creators of the Lindy
Hop, the original swing dance, and is regarded as a living "American
national treasure". The event, which will be held in the ballroom of
the
Tokyo American Club, has been endorsed by The American Center, Public
Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy in Japan.

Last year, birthday parties for Frankie Manning were held in three US
cities, New York, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. Those events
combined
attracted more than 4,500 dancers, with the New York and San Francisco
parties recognized or attended by the mayor of those cities.

We are having two days dance workshops too in the event inviting many
wonderful instructors from the U.S. including Chazz Young from Las
Vegas, Micky Davidson from New York, Ken Watanabe from San Francisco
and Jun Maruta from New York and more. Upps, Frankie Manning from
New York of course ;)

Please check out more detail info at
http://www.impetus.ne.jp/lindyhop/events/frankie/
and don't miss to join this exciting swing dance event in our
Asia/Pacific region. And please let this information know to your
students, friends of yours in other area. Thank you very much.

Swingin' is believing,
hiro
